The Dr. Phil show is kicking off its sixth season, so buckle up because Dr. Phil is coming at you with intensity! This year, he tackles the news stories that impact you – from celebrity meltdowns to school tragedies. He delivers the news to you as it breaks on a revolutionary, high-tech news platform that will change the way you stay informed! Today, he exposes a deadly trend that’s sweeping the nation: driving while sending text messages. Between Blackberrys and cell phones, Americans have a harder and harder time keeping their eyes on the road, but with teens, the problem is even worse. Seventeen-year-old Chelsea averages 5,000 text messages a month and insists that she can text while driving a stick shift. What will it take for her to put the brakes on her dangerous hobby? Plus, Patrick killed a man while texting and driving, and he’s still living with guilt. Will his tragic story be a wake-up call for Chelsea? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

AMEN!

Quote From: softcore

You must be very talented.  But if you really think you want to be in the same classfication of this girl, think again.

I have rarely seen anyone with so much arrogance, selfishness, and stupidity as today's young guest.  She missed the essential message of this show, as you seem to have.  She took a virtual reality drivers test and failed it because she was texting.  She met a young man who previously has killed someone due to texting whilst driving....but still won't give it up.  She thinks she is a good driver.

Why he only had to spend 10 days in jail for accidentally taking a life is beyond reason to me.  But I think he's doing a great job in spreading the message that texting whilst driving is a stupid, dangerous thing to do.  Such a shame that he won't get through to people like you.

You know, if I was this chick's mother I WOULDN'T TAKE AWAY HER PHONE.  I WOULD TAKE AWAY HER CAR!!  She is spoiled rotten and her mother is a coward for not disciplining her.

I just posted with the same message as you!  The mother should take away the car of this immature, spoiled child!

Trouble

I think that Chelsea needs psychological help. Especially if she thinks that the cell phone is THAT important. More important then the life of someone to put them in danger, and her mom needs to pull rank and do some parenting. If taking the phone away from her is that diffcult. Then how diffcult does she think it will be if her daughter kills herself in an accident. I hope that she does something before there is major trouble with this situation.

texting while driving

The mother you had on your show needs to step up. If this girl hits someone like the boy did she might not be as lucky . The next family might what to see her pay for what she done. And they could also sue the parents. Parents need to quite beening afraid of making their kids mad. Be a parent first , your kids friends second. By taking the phone away you could be saving your own daughter life.

The Car

I truly believe that Chelsea was not getting the message nor was her Mother. It is not the phone that will kill someone it will be the car, the phone will be the cause! So in my opinion the car should be taken away. Give her a bike if she needs to get somewhere. Let's see if she can ride and text at the same time!! At least others will be a little more safe with Chelsea on the road! We have always thought drunk drivers were the most dangerous drivers on the road well not any more, you may drive drunk occasionally but  most teen and 20 something drivers are texting all the time not just occasionally! Parents need to take responsibility, if they knowingly allow their child to drive and text, should something happen, then they should held liable!

I will be praying that Chelsea will stop texting before it's too late!

God Bless!

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

Dear Dr. Phil:   You absolutely blew it today on your show with the young girl  (note I do not call her a young lady) and her mother.  Take away her cell phone?  Please give all of us motorists a break.  Forget the cell phone, TAKE THE CAR AWAY FROM HER.  When she grows up, if ever, give it back.  However I think she is just a spoiled young lady like a second Paris Hilton.   Thanks       Florida Grandma

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

Quote From: lynn4wings

Anyone who thinks that they are not in danger every time they are on the road is sorely mistaken.  Teenage drivers with cell phones are everywhere and they are killing people, inoocent people.  My husband was on a motorcycle at a red light and a teenager on a cell phone failed to stop, killing him instantly and changing my life and his 2 daughters lives forever.  She was so distracted by her phone that she did not even apply her brakes, the drag of his motorcycle is what finally stopped her vehicle.  He was innocently having a good time on his motorcycle thinking that he was safe until he saw her in his rearview mirror coming at him like a missile. I don't care how "unfair" it may be to take a cell phone away from a teenager, how fair is it that I have to start my whole life over again without the love of my life?????   I applaud Dr. Phil for finally bringing this issue to the public.  I beg all of you to stop and think before you pick up your phone and please warn your teenagers that a disaster will happen.

I am so sorry...so so so sorry you lost your husband...I couldn't imagine.

I for one have always thought that our diving laws should match current science, and current science says that the teen brain is simply not mature enough for such a dangerous task.

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

Quote From: terpsrule1991

Dr. Phil was WAY off on his advise.  His advise for Chelsea should have been to take away her car, not her phone.  She seemed WAY to immature and irresponsible to be driving.  Furthermore, she has had 3 accidents within the first four months of driving.  Texting or not, she has terrible judgement and should not be on the road!  I think just taking the phone away is a poor solution to this problem.

You know, maybe Chelsea needs to go to defensive driving school to learn how to drive.  Only having her license for 4 months and already 3 accidents is not a getting off to a good start,  Better yet, Mom needs to tote her around if she can't take away her phone.  Hey, what about Mom's driving record? Can she text and drive at the same time?

09/10 Season 6 Premiere!

Quote From: tlmeis

Just because you haven't had an accident, doesn't mean that texting while driving is safe.  WAKE UP!  And please.....let all of us sane people know where you intend to text and drive so we can watch out for you.  I don't want you doing that on the same streets that I drive on .  Holy cow....how selfish can one person be to do something so immature while driving a 5,000 pound piece of machinery.  May God have mercy on you if something bad happens while you are so selfishly texting while driving.
I have to say, just by reading your message. You are just as immature and selfish as Chelsea. It does not matter how great of a texter you are. If you are texting, you are not completely focused on driving. If a child runs out in front of your car, you are to busy paying attention to your cell phone to stop the car. I mean none of this in a hateful way but it is time to grow up.  When you are driving, you should only be driving and not trying to multi-task.

text messaging while driving

I have a cell phone family plan.  I have blocked text messaging.  they cannot unblock this because I pay the phone bill.  That way they can talk and not text.  Funny they don't run over the minutes I allot them because I take away the phone if they get close to using their minutes til the next cycle.   California has a hands free law that takes effect 2008.  no cell , eating  drinking   both hands have to be free to drive.   Parents call your cell company and block text messaging.  you can do this.  in Dr. Phils words from one of his shows ii is a cash card.  Use it.  CArolrie

texting while driving

Theres more than one way to handle this. Take the car. Take the phone or ..... Block the text messageing.

I worker for a cell phone company and most have an option to block text messageing.
