(Original Air Date: 09/17/07) Secrets, aliases, disguises … Dr. Phil's guests are liars and cons who manipulate people to get what they want. Fred Brito is an ex-con and self-proclaimed "Benevolent Con Man," who spent years fabricating identities and falsifying resumes to obtain top-level, six-figure-salary positions with highly esteemed organizations. He's faked being everything from a symphony conductor to a psychiatrist! Fred even posed as a priest and married couples in the church. What happens when Maria and Gene, who were married by "Father Fred," confront him? Will he admit to his wrongdoing? Fred says he's no longer in the con game, but is "Honest Fred" just another scam? Then, "Linda" says she had everyone believing she was dying and needed a kidney transplant to save her life. She even lost 30 pounds and wore a dialysis tube to make her made-up illness seem more convincing. Is she serious about getting help and stopping the lies, or is she lying to get Dr. Phil's attention? What's at the root of Linda's deception? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Come on people

All these vicious attacks toward Linda are coming from none other than Freddie himself. Remember he was the Executive Director of the Kidney Foundation. He would know all the anecdotes.

WITHOUT CONSCIENCE - RECOGNIZING THE REMORSELESS

How do we recognize the remorseless? One of their chief characteristics is a kind of glow or charisma that makes sociopaths more charming or interesting than the other people around them.  They’re more spontaneous, more intense, more complex or even sexier than everyone else, making them tricky to identify and leaving us easily seduced.  Some of my favorite books that provide a great introduction and insight are:

Why is it Always About You?:  The Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism by Sandy Hotchkiss AND Emotional Blackmail:  When the People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation and Guilt to Manipulate You by Susan Forward

Without Conscience:  The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Robert Hare OR Treating Personality Disorders in Children and Adolescents:  A Relational Approach by Efrain Bleiberg

Fundamentally, sociopaths are different because they cannot love. Sociopaths learn early on to show fake emotion, but underneath they are indifferent to others’ suffering.  They live to dominate and thrive for the thrill to win.  We all almost certainly know at least one or more sociopaths already.

Hope it helps!

FIGHT BACK - HOW TO REPORT MISC FRAUD

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is very committed to investigating telephone, mail and internet fraud.  The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers report, spot, stop, and avoid them.

Education is a key tool to prevent consumer injury.  The following link to the FTC website, you'll find publications with advice on avoiding scams and rip-offs, as well as tips on other consumer topics and reporting consumer fraud.

www.ftc.gov/bcp/consumer.shtm

To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit www.ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.

The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Hope it helps!

I understand

Quote From: idajoan

That woman is faking.  My husband - for real has kidney failure from high dose chemo.  My husband - for real has been battling for his life with cancer these past 3 years.  The kidney failure happened when he thought he could lick the cancer once and for all with high dosage chemo in May of this year.  Instead it destroyed his kidneys landing him in ICU twice.  Why would you want to fake health problems when at any time you could get hit with the real thing?  Enjoy life - live in the moment.  We don't live in any "limelight" with his illness although he has wonderful friends and family that care a whole lot.  We may go for days without someone calling but we know they care but are busy with their own lives too.  If God blesses you with good health use it for helping others and caring about others not just yourself.

your position, I think, that we shouldn't take our health for granted because illness can strike and devastate us at any time.  Life is meant for loving others.

I am sorry for what you and your husband have to go through.

What I think everyone is not getting about this woman faking kidney failure is that she IS sick.  I think she is seriously mentally ill and for what she has, there isn't much hope.

Please, when you thank God for your physical health, don't forget your mental health.  Having suffered with mental illness for more than half my life, I know what agony is.  i wouldn't wish it upon anyone.  As for physical illness, I haven't had much.  So I am grateful for that.

Anyone could have a nervous breakdown, bi-polar disorder, or a bout of severe depression; young women (and sometimes men) come down with anorexia nervosa; millions of women suffer with post partum depression of varying severity; most know a friend or family member tormented by schizophrenia.  The late Princess Diana had a personality disorder, bulimia and episodes of depression and self-harm.   I suspect the lady on the show has Munchausen's, which is very rare but has a poor recovery rate.  Many people can and do die as a result of their mental illnesses.

Please don't reserve sympathy just for the physically ill - the mentally ill suffer torment all day, every day, for years.  Please remember them in your prayers.

By some miracle I have reached some level of recovery.  Many of my friends haven't recovered; many have died, due to suicide or accidents., and most of them were in their 20's and 30's.   Just as no one is in control of their early childhood experiences of trauma, such as sexual abuse, so no one is in control of whether they become mentally ill.  To make matters worse, you have to cope with the social stigma of being mentally ill, and endure former close friends and family members alienating you because they just don't understand.

I hope this woman gets all the help she needs and that she can find some happiness.  I hope she reads this, and knows that some people do care, and some even understand.

9/17 FAKING IT

Quote From: bananasmommy

I've seen Fred Brito on another show, too.  It seems to me that Fred Brito is a non-vilolent ex-convict who found that, because of his criminal record, it was going to be impossible for him to become employed in the type of work that he longed to do, mostly positions of service and caring for others.  And this same thing happens to non-viloent ex-convicts seeking employment in this country every single day.  And we wonder why so many ex-cons end up re-offending!

Look at Fred's record -- he didn't try to scheme innocent people out of their last dollars.  He conned his way into the preisthood and other positions of service.  Was it okay for him to do that?  Of course not.  Were there people who were hurt by his deception?  Certainly.  I don't argue that what he did was right, but if you listen ... neither does he.  He knows he did wrong, and is now trying to use his life and experience to be helpful to others.  In an honest way.

I hope that people will try to listen with an open mind on Monday.  I think Fred Brito has an important message to share, about the fate of ex-convicts in America.

There is 1 main point when it comes to the fate of ex-convicts in America. They are never an ex-convict. If they come out of jail or prison( and their is a difference in these 2 systems) if they are reformed they will get a job which is hard with a record, and become productive citizens. The main word is CON. Fred Brito is not the only man or woman that has lead this type of life, and the sad part is he actually believes that he is skilled in all the posistions he worked in.The sad part is that he will find another job and will CON others.Ex-convict does not exist. Very few people that knowlingly CON people are very good at what they do and they have no emotions or feel that what they are doing is wrong.

You know I took an income tax course ten years ago. We were asked to guess why many people who cheat on their taxes are caught. I said, er let me think, overstated expenses, understated income? NO. Double receipting? NO. Failure to return.? NO. The single reason they got and will continue to get caught is they just have to brag...brag about how much smarter they are than CAs, CMAs, auditors...brag about how much smarter they are than senior management...brag, brag, brag... Suddenly revenue services receives an anonymous tip;)

Now Fred, going on to his 48th second chance, may just be able to fool some unsuspecting little Board of Directors somewhere into hiring him again. Then, when they find out who he is because he won't be able to stop bragging, he will be fired and rightfully so, then he can fleece them for wrongful dismissal.

I say roll out the baby grand and let's have Fred play us a concerto by JS Bach. Any maestro would be able to do that;)

Fakin it

Quote From: pache253

I agree.  Pache isn't my real name but who wants to put their real name and other important info on the net......it's no longer safe.

I have a myspace page and recently found that a person I'd been speaking to for months who claimed to be in the military now for 17 years, in the Army 15 of it, been to Iraq twice, had actually only been in the Navy for less than 2 years and was dishonorably discharged for conduct unbecoming of an Navy person.  It was amazing to find out how many women he had conned into sending him money and presents. I do have to say I shouldn't have been so stupid but I did a background check and got his address and that's when I started thinking.......why send money and gifts to an apartment address and not a normal APO for the Army. lol.  Guess we need to check out everyone before we trust them.

What is your point Pache?

Seems like a bit of rambling to me.

In these times, to trust other's on the web is ludicrious. Period.

The point of it all is, why do people have a need to con others as Fred has done over and over again.

Obviously he is a chronic liar who can't stop his shananigens and in the process has hurt many people in doing so. Who needs attention.

To hide our true selves from others so that we do not get hurt is one thing but being an imposter is another.

I'm not sure that Fred can change and I'm not even sure he wants to!

He has no remorse, no feelings of shame which can put him into the category of being a psychopath.

Dr. Phil has his hands full!

Fear!

FEAR!  That is my motivation for manipulation!  I am SCARED TO DEATH OF PEOPLE!  with good reasons, and they are too difficult to post about...but suffice to say, not all "manipulation is to gain attention" FOR ME...I use it to scare people away from me!
