(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

I'm SURE You weren't talking to me as I think this world HAS to learn to appreciate kids.

If you don't like kids then DO NOT GO PLACES THAT WELCOME KIDS. It's really easy.

Totally agree with you! What the hell do they think happened when they were fussy, screaming babies and their parents had to put up with people telling them they couldn't do something cause their parents brought their ungrateful butts into the world. I mean noone was born an adult were they?

Noisy Eating Suggestion

Joan, maybe you could not purchase the offending foods that make such noise. And get nuts that are already shelled.  Of course healthy, raw veggies make noise when chewed, too.

No wonder airline ticket prices continue to rise.  People like Kyla who file outrageous lawsuits over STUPID things!  Shame on her, her mother, and her money hungry attorney who should have told her to walk away after receiving her apology.  Our society is so hungry for quick money, many look for inappropriate ways to become rich.  Someone looks at them wrong, or in this case, asks them to cover up (heaven forbid!!) and they think SUE, SUE, SUE.  There is a time and a place to file a lawsuit, believe me I know, my husband is an attorney, but this is just STUPID!  Grow up and get over it.  If Kyla does actually file the suit, her true colors will shine.  Green, green, green and black, black, black.

Please reconsider, walk away while you still come out smelling like a rose.  You are beautiful and articulate, go make an honest living like the rest of us!
Is this a joke? This is why airline tickets are expensive? Because they gave free tickets to someone they treated badly?

Kudos to Kyla

I love the Dr. Phil show, but I think Kyla should take this all the way. I stopped flying SWA when I started watching their show. They are down right rude to some of their customers and they don't have a website any longer. Did they not want to know what people thought as long as the money was coming in?

One particular episode sticks in my mind... A young man who had already cleared security could not find his ticket. The SWA employees kept suggesting maybe he dropped it, but he kept telling them he thought he had put it in the pocket of his suitcase. He had his ID and they eventually got him on the plane. However, before departure his ticket was found on the floor somewhere. This was a TV show that was being taped. Everyone watching that show knew the young man had dropped the ticket. Did the SWA supervisor let it go? Nooooooo....she actually boarded the plane to single him out and let him publicly know in front of the entire plane that he was to blame! WOW, is that valuing your customer?  I would have thought better of SWA had they acted professional, gotten him on the plane despite him misplacing his ticket, and not behaved in a grade school, pointing the finger manner.  Traveling can be stressful and this young man was obviously in a panic, which the SWA employees seemed to be enjoying!

They also tend to overboard their flights and can't understand why customers, trying to get to a destination are upset and angry when they get bumped from a long booked flight. I work hard to earn my vacation time! I would be upset if an airline I paid to provide a service determined that my time wasn't important just so they could make an extra buck!

You GO, Kyla, for all of us who pay good money and get treated like the airlines are doing us a favor! And come on, Dr. Phil, you think the airlines don't know who you are when you board their plane?

It's called baby bynedril!?!

What kind of a comment is that! I have mentioned using that kind of stuff for plane flights and such to my mother and she said she would've never used drugs on me as a baby, for any reason.

I disagree with Dr Phil

I have to disagree with Dr. Phil, Kyla has every right too sue SWA, simply because she was made a joke of. When her mother wrote the letter was there chance to apologize, now that she is going on every talk show, SWA is seeing what damage it can do to there business, and NOW they want to apologize...She can accept their apology but she can also teach them never to treat another customer like that EVER again, and to make a policy so this will not happen again...Dr. Phil surprised me at the end telling her he disagrees with her sueing them, kinda like he wanted to be the savior because they apologized on his talk show.......Not fair he should have supported her either way or for that fact no way, but he was sounded like he was supporting  SWA.....

I can not believe that Southwestern provided an apology on Dr. Phil that included "great legs." Regardless of whether you are male or female this should offend anyone who recieved such an unprofessional apology from a buisness executive that should know how to deliver a professional apology. You would think that Southwestern would want to resolve this case and provide the best and most appropriate apology. Also, it is very ironic that a Virgin Airlines representative was on the show handing out free tickets, yet Southwestern provided a written lack-luster apology and did not even have the dignity to have a representative from Southwestern on the show or even on video apologizing.

I thought I was the only one who noticed how inappropriate the "apology" was.   What a disgrace!

Kyla's Skirt

Dr. Phil,

When Kyla was interviewed by Matt Laur on the Today show, she was wearing the same skirt she was kicked off of Southwest Airlines for wearing.  When she sat down in the chair to be interviewed, her underware could be seen at her crouch before she crossed her legs. (Since that scene aired, the Today Show has cut that part out.  It embarrassed them because they were trying to make a big deal out of what Southwest did.)  I think a skirt that short is a very good reason for Southwest to ask her to change her clothes.  Young children fly on planes also.  When I fly, I don't want to see anyones underware.  Kyla needs to tell the truth and get over it.  Southwest gets many Kudos for standing up to this situation.

Baby Benadryl??

As the mother of 3 and grandmother of one, I would have been appalled had someone told me to drug my child and shut them up. That baby wasn't doing anything inappropriate. I would have been more than happy to get the hell off that plane and file complaints with everyone and anyone I could think of. And I would have contested the charge for the airline tickets on my credit card bill.

I know...people act as if flying is something really really intense and every moment must be perfect.

Yeah, it's cramped, yeah it's full, yeah it's easy to get a little edgy...but seriously, people need to take a deep breath and focus on SOMETHING ELSE, Get headphones if you hate children. Read a book if other people's bodies visually disturb you.  It's just a flight...pretty mundane activity really.
i totally agree with you!  i think it speaks volumes about the selfishness of our society that people have to have everything perfect for themselves whenever they go somewhere.  why do others have to push what they believe is acceptable on everyone else?  i really wish everyone would relax and just go with the flow!  we would all be alot happier if we could tune out what we find unpleasent and SUCK IT UP!
