(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

I wish I had a survay

I wish that anyone posting a comment on the dress code had to put a photo of themselves with it or answer a survey.

1. could you dress like that and turn heads, or do you turn stomachs?

2. are you old and therefor have an excuse for your narrow view?

3. are you "religious" and therefor self righteous out of need to seem righteous?

4.Are you a man she would not give the time of day to?

5. you get my point.

09/18 Etiquette

As a retired employee of a major airline with 28 years of service, I feel qualified to point out to Kyla and all others who disagree with the action taken by SWA that all carriers have a "Contract of Carriage" which addresses in detail their policies & procedures.  This information is readily available by searching the carriers website or contacting them by phone or letter.

This particular situation is covered under the "Refusal to Transport" guidelines.  Specific to this case is the information under "Comfort and Safety", which states

F.  "Carrier may refuse to transport or remove from the aircraft at any point any passenger in the following categories as may be necessary for the comfort or safety of such passenger or other passengers:

  (1)  Persons whose conduct is or has been known to be disorderly, abusive, offensive, threatening,

intimidating, or violent, or whose clothing is lewd, obscene, or patently offensive."

Even a single passenger complaint would mean it was offensive to at least one person, making Southwest completely within it's rights and obligations to address the problem.

So, let Kyla, her Mommy and their (sleazy) attorney file suit, they really have no basis on which to prevail over Southwest Airlines!!!

Wow...I have a flight planned to JFK in about 2 weeks. I think maybe I'll try complaining that some people are "offending" me.  I mean, really....if it offends little old me then they should have their plans completely ruined....right?

southwest flight attendant uniforms

has anyone noticed what southwest flight attendants wear on the plane?  how about shorts, reeboks, and polos.  the shorts the women wear are much shorter than the mini dress your guest wore.  what's up with that?  I work for Delta (41 year flight attendant) and we are definitely never allowed to comment on anyone's apparel.  We do have an estblished dress code (no topless and no bare feet) that's it.  In all my years as a flight attendant I have never heard of Delta ever defending any one of us even when we are 100% right and simply applying the rules that Delta and the FAA ask us to enforce.  I think it is nice of Southwest to defend its employees (they are known for that), but maybe they should look at what their own employees are allowed to wear to work before they start throwing people off their airline.  I think the young lady in question is beautiful and was dressed appropriately....I even admire the Southwest uniforms...I just don't think the pot should be calling the kettle names.  By the way, my own daughter was tossed off a southwest plane because she was accompanied by a seeing eye dog in harness and in training....she is a professional trainer and has never had a problem with any other airline....so much for friendly skies....Dona from Delta

Kayla

As Dr. Phil says "are you kidding me??"  I mean, she is a Hooter's girl, so what her idea of appropriate is, may not be what the rest of us sees as acceptable. From what I have heard on other shows, her belly area was showing, I do not know if this is true or not. Families fly the airlines and I would not want my young child to stare up her very short skirt and look at her exposed mid drift for an extended time on an airplane. This is why I choose not to go to Hooters.  She is at her job getting her tips and all the attention in the world with barely nothing on,but she is embarrassed because she is calling attention to herself, she can't have it both ways. Why doesn't she sue Hooters for making her dress less than acceptable???? .  Both parties acted bad ,but she is worse by wanting a lawsuit out of it. I can see both sides to the story, however, she is going just a tad overboard.

There is a victim but it isn't kyla!

VICTIM?????????????

Victim?

You've got to be kidding me!

Kyla , her mother and her attorney are vitimizing the airline and all of us who will pay more for tickets to defray the cost of the frivilous lawsuit that they want to file!

GIve me a break!!!

All she was interested in was her fifteen minutes of "fame" and as much as she can squeeze out of the airline. I don't think harassment was ever the issue here. DOLLAR SIGNS WERE!

Self centered ,selfish

Quote From: clarpa

Kyla , PLEASE..  After an apology, free tickets, not to mention all the attention brought to the problems with ariline dress codes, which kYLA insisted are the reason for her appearances, it is so obvious she is just after the MONEY. Talk about ettiquette!  She is tackier than the attendant who pulled her aside and told her to cover up!  I hope the judge throws her out of court  and makes Her apoligize for being disingenuous on your show.  Her intention was never to give it up - she was after the money - tacky, tacky, tacky behavior.
It is apparent that Kyla lives in LALA land and thinks about no one but herself,oh and of course the MONEY MONEY MONEY she thinks she can get from her stupid behavior. I don't like the way the airlines handled the situation , but Kyla and her Mother have been way worse,. Nothing will satisfy this selfish jerk but thousands or hundreds of thousands of airline money, which of course will increase fares for the rest of us!

Control your child

The mother on the Continental Airlines flight failed to mention that their were previous problems with her child besides "bye bye plane" and the flight attendant did not tell her "to shut her baby up." You failed to keep control of your child and they had every right to tell you to get off the plane.

Kyla and First-Class Passenger

IMO, Kyla is doing the right thing, though maybe for the wrong reasons. According to the pictures, she showed nothing. Her skirt was a little short, but all it showed were her legs. Look again at the pictures if you disagree. If Southwest had a problem with what Kyla was wearing, maybe they should create a dresscode. She has every reason to sue Southwest.
Personally, I would be encouraging Kyla to sue Southwest because they had no reason to embarass her when their standards are obviously unclear. Southwest should have to create a dresscode if they're going to have such uneven standards. They have nothing to fall back upon except personal discretion of the Flight Attendant, who by no means represents the company's views.

I am appalled at the way she was treated and I'll answer your survey and I'll post a pic.

1-I'd turn stomaches
2-I'm 29
3-I'm an atheist
4-I'm a female and happily married to a man
5-Yes, yes I do! LOL
