(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

The Bye-Bye Baby

Okay...this woman just admitted that her child was talking during the SAFETY BRIEFING, and she still can't understand why they told her to silence her child?  Please.  While I agree that the flight attendant did not have to suggest baby benadryl, she had every right for the safety of everyone on that plane to tell the lady that her child was being too loud.

She Just wants to sue

I'm glad Dr. Phil showed her sitting down in the outfit. While it looked long enough when she was standing, it was awfully short when she was sitting - the skirt almost completely disappeared. I guess it's her perogative if she wants to look like Sharon Stone, but I think it's tacky.
She did show her true stripes when, despite an apology before a national audience, she refused to say she wouldn't sue. When she tried to "give away" her tickets, she was doubtless following her lawyer's advice; if she had taken them, she might have been precluded from suing, since the tickets more than covered her damages (what damages! How could she have been more humiliated than appearing in that outfit!).

She's just a gold digger and we all pay in higher prices when people like her try to make a killing. It's pretty lame.

Frivolous lawsuits

I agree with Dr. Phil when he told Kyla to "get over it". If she was so embarrassed, she wouldn't have done countless talk shows and put herself out there. And let's just be honest. She wasn't looking for an apology. She was looking at the $$$$$$. For the sake of our legal system, I hope a judge throws this out as "frivolous" and a waste of the court's time and resources. And as for the employee who said "It's called baby benadryl", she should be fired for lack of tact. BUT, there shouldn't be a lawsuit involved there either.

9/18 show

Dr. Phil,

I've been offended flying Southwest airlines; the behavior was not directed at me, but towards a child. Before push-back there was a toddler crying, not atypical on an airplane. The Flight attendant said on the intercom, "please turn-off all electronic devices and children." This was appalling to me and am not sure what if any action was taken by the parents. That was publicly embarrassing for me, if not them. My point is, is that Southwest should be held accountable, apology or not, for embarrassing Tyla. I remember some six years ago that an unknown trial consultant gained fame and fortune through their appearance(s) on a talk show. Southwest should be held accountable for their actions!

Kayla

Good for you Kayla, to wear what you want! Here's the kicker.....you got the apology and 2 free round trip tickets, then it took you about 10 minutes to realize that wasn't good enough for you. You & your attorney will chase a lawsuit & I hope you get NOTHING!!!!! Just like Dr Phil said, I too have a hard time thinking or knowing that my tax dollars will be wasted in a court room while you & your ambulance chasing attorney try to get more than that from Southwest Airlines. SHAME on YOU!!!!
I have never posted a message on here until today, I have never seen such a gold-digger in action! I hope you don't benefit at ALL in the future from this situation. Go get a job instead of working the system!!!
Signed,
Happy to fly Southwest!!

09/18 Etiquette

Quote From: hotmomma79

i have to say, i only took issue with one thing you said.  i work in a coffee stand and sometimes i call people 'dear' or 'sweet-thing' but it is just me being me, do you think that is offensive?  i'm honestly just curious, no bad vibes on my side here, i would like to hear your opinion

chrissy

Chrissy, I don't personally find it offensive, but I wouldn't call anyone by those terms. That is just me. I am pretty accepting of other people's differences and unless I believe they mean it to be offensive, I am ok with "dear", "sweetie", "honey".

15 mins. of fame

Quote From: vanessa77

I believe the outfit was not as it was worn on the plane.  I am sure she was baring a lot more than what we saw on the Today show. This incident happened in August and she is just now coming out with it?  She wanted an apology but now may sue?  C'mon now, this is getting ridiculous.  She's on every talk show now talking about her horrible incident.

The outfit was too short, period.  That outfit is made more for a club or the beach, not for running errands or doing other things.  There is a time and place to dress that way and other ways.  Why can't people realize that?  The airline has every right to do what they want to do...it's a private company and just like a restaurant or any other business entity, they have the right to refuse service etc.  Thing is she still flew with them.  She also returned with them.  So how is she "scarred for life"?  That's so stupid!

Bottom line, the girl is an attention whore by every fit of the definition.  For a lawyer to actually take this case is too pathetic.  If it does go to court, I hope the judge laughs it right out of court.  What a waste of time and money to purse this.

I agree with vanessa 77

This has gone on too long.  The girl flashes America on the Today Show and thinks there is nothing wrong with the skirt.  Come on she's looking to get her face all over the media.  Please stop the show.  Her show.

Kyla story

WOW that  girl is something else. To me she is looking for free money. She said she wanted an appology so when she gets it, she like well thats nice be I really want the money instead. In my opinion her skirt was way to short, and a bit to trampy. But then again being asked to change or leave was wrong. BUT they said they were sorry.

Totally Agree

"There is a time and place to dress that way and other ways."

Who decides those times and places and dress? You?

When I originally heard about the story, I ignored it as it is ridiculous.  I still believe this but you captured my opinion perfectly.  It happened, she got noticed, they apologized, now get a life, and move on.  Pooh on the lawyer too - hope on principal Southwest sticks out if they do sue.  I appreciate that Southwest Airlines is looking out for the welfare of their passengers.

TO DO THINGS IN A REPECTABLE MANNER. THERE ARE KIDS OUT THERE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO TURN AROUND AND TELL THE PARENT, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TEACHING THOSE KIDS. SO DO WHAT EVER YOU HAVE TO DO, KIDS NOW DAYS DONT HAVE ENOUGH MANNERS AS IT IS. YOU GO MOM.
