(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: gprenn11

Quote from Kyla's attorney:

"I know Kyla wants to make certain this does not happen to anyone else in the future, and their people are not trained."

Yeah......sure!! Another one looking for an easy payday!!! I'm sure she's REAL concerned about everyone else. The only thing she's concerned about is how much of a settlement she can get.

There are people who can't do things due to  reasons they cannot chance. Color of skin, sex, whatever. She has a skirt that showed her "area" when she sat down (it is on the morning show, and youtube). We have the right to not have that exposed to children.

OK, SO I AM NOT MS. SOME WOULD THINK SO, BUT JUST LIKE THEY FEEL THEY CAN INVADE MY SPACE WITH THEIR NOSE, I CAN INVADE THEIRS WITH MY COMMENTS.

People don't need to have children as a pass to exsist in our society

I agree with that.  When I tell people I don't have children, they look at me like I just drowned a bag of kittens.  And they say, "You don't have children, so you wouldn't understand."

What's that?  Does that mean your kids are just allowed to infringe on my right to fly simply because I didn't have kids?  I know I can't control these kids, but it doesn't mean they can't be taught MANNERS, you know, those things that people used to know to show respect in society?

We live in a civilized society, and should act accordingly.  It's part of our evolution as a progressive society, not debasing ourselves to the level of chimps at the zoo (and some of them have better manners than the guests on the show).   However, there's a difference between being polite and being a doormat.  You can be assertive AND polite, it is possible.

I agree with you. I'm also glad to hear I'm not the only one sick of "You don't have children, so you wouldn't understand" remark.

Kyla has a point

I  recently had a problem with Southwest and am waiting for a response from Southwest. Seems the folks that make up the rules not quite explain to the persons dealing with the public. I am bipolar and was flying back to Mass. from Arkansas with a rescue dog that is assisting me with my treatment. Prior to leaving home I had contacted Southwest to ascertain I had all the correct documents and the right type of carrier. When it was time for me to leave Southwest refused to let me on the plane with the 4 lb. dog. Why? Because the person at the ticket counter did not recognize my disability, even though I was about to have an episode, and she did not like the letter from my therapist: in her words it should have come from a professional, like a doctor.

So if Southwest has highered legalites that can interpret and regulate their regulations on all levels it does not surprise me that they have also entered the fashion industry.

Kyla looked fine. She's not a fat, old woman nor did she look like a tramp. But Kyla, enough. Please move on.

Kyla's ettiquette

Dr. Phil was buffaloed by Kyla and her mother which surprised me.  She did not look "lovely"  in the outfit that got her this attention.  She looked like the Hooters girl that she is.  When I go to a restaurant, I do not go to Hooters because I am not interested in having dinner with a display of breasts and legs unless we're talking chicken.  Maybe there should be a Hooters airline, but for now we all have to fly together.  I expect  passengers clothed as though they were in public--not in an audition for an MTV music video.  Kyla and her mother were out to capitalize on the situation from the beginning. Dr. Phil what were you thinkin'?  If the airlines had contacted me about my daughter's attire such as it was, I would have thanked them and asked her to dress more appropriately.  If she chose not to, I think the next time she and I were out together, I may have curlers in my hair and my PJ's on--not pornographic, but certainly not apporpriate.

When I worked at Wal-Mart, in the fabric and crafts department, there was a co-worker I always hated to see coming for yard goods. Because I could hear this gal popping her gum by the time she got within 30 feet of me. Every chew was also a pop. I hated cutting fabric for her because she'd stand so close she was popping right in my ear. She also ran a register. But, I never let her check me out. I'd always go to the furthest open register, from which I could still hear the popping, no matter how long the line was. Even when she had no customers.

If she wasnt' wearing any undies, it's not very hygenic to then sit on an airplane seat and not considerate of the next person. What if she didn't wipe very well?  What if the girl had pubic lice ?  And other people have to sit on that!  Gross.

And, in a skirt like hers, not only extremely short, but also straight, it's bound to ride up enough that her bare bottom, whether she's wearing no underwear, or a thong, is going to come into direct contact with the seat where the next passenger will be sitting.

I saw this show the first time around. Did it make enough to justify a re-run?   The father was a total jerk! Its almost like Nader vs GM!   And then another air lines bribed the in the studio.  The bit about Continental also hit home.  Years ago my father died - I had tickets to visit and tried to exchange them for earlier ones.  This airlines would even have made money on the deal as the first tickets were for the Christmas rush. They made me drive about 50 miles to one of their offices to get the cheaper replacement tickets - could not have them at the gate for me!..  Never flew them again  -  a few months later their CEO got picked up for a DUI.  what goes around comes around -  BUT why do so many get this show as a publicity stut?

Kila wants - - -

Quote From: marldeep

Southwest Airline apologizes, and she wants to possibly sue? What is her argument now? She does not want what happened to her to happened to other girls?? There are people that aren't allowed to do things for reasons they cannot change. Think about that. That is way more serious.

Guess she is trying to make her money, though....

What gets me is why this segment ever aired in the first palce.  What was Phil's staff thinking?  Her father got it  put it in prospective with his closing comments.  Kids follow their parent's influance.  Just how much does a 60 second advertising spot cost for this show?  There were a bunch of Corporate names being show-cased with free-bees!

Is she serious?

I am outraged by people like Kyla.  She states that all she wants is an apology, and gets it!  Now, she is still considering a lawsuit.  Is she serious?  I get so pissed when I see people like her and their money-hungry attitudes wasting our tax dollars.  Someone should put her in her place; what if someone finds a reason to file a lawsuit against her someday.  Carma will get to her!!!
