(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

KYLA PLEASE!

Kyla please get over it.  You looked like a complete brat when you smiled and took the tickets not only from Virgin Airlines (talk about PR) but from South West too.  It wasn't until Dr. Phil painted you into a corner (that you should have been standing in), that you handed them back.  If you did enough talk shows I think that rised more than enough awareness to have everyone know you were embarassed.  To go to court over this says more about your character or lack there of, to make a buck over some bull.  If I sued everytime someone embarassed me, I would have been in court with all my teachers and my mom for correcting me in front of my friends.  PLEASE grow up.  You looked a fool.

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Personally I think Kyla's skirt was a bit short, but it looked nice on her.  I lost every once of respect for her when she said she still wanted to sue "So it does not happen to anyone else."  Why didn't she just get the person's name, and report them for being rude.  Why sue an entire company for one person's bad judgement?  Money is the root of all evil.  And so are lawyers.  I just want to also say this that is a private company.  I think they should be able to do what the heck they wanted to, if you don't like it, fly someone else.  I think she is just a whiney person that wants attention.

Manic Mom?

Seeing that Dr. Phil is licensed and knows that a person that has high levels of irrability could stem from having ADD. It is proven that people with ADD have this highened sense of irrability do to sound smell or taste. I just wondered why he just blew off this woman with out searching her background to see if there was a reason for such irrability. I personally been put on medication and given different psychological programs to help me with my need, yet it never even touched the problem. I have studied pschology in school and still have yet come up with a program that will help with this problem.

The old message boards on this topic were very helpful with regards to labelling the condition.  Misophonia is an aversion to certain sounds that surpasses mild annoyances.  It becomes as grating as finger nails on a chalk board.  I am currently looking for help for my teenage son who suffers from this.  Labelling it was the easy part.  Let me know if you find out more.

Joan Has Good Kids

Quote From: mrein3033

I really got frustrated listening to Dr. Phil   when he told the mother that she would have to try to ignore the noises of chewing ice cubes, etc.  What about the family toning it down out of respect to the mother?  They are aware of how it effects her, so why not do this small thing to please her??

I have missed very few shows and loved every one of them.  Dr. Phil rules!!

Joan wrote in on the original air date to say that her kids really do try to not annoy her with these sounds.  They are well mannered and were merely demonstrating the sounds that she hates.  It is a painful condition however when sounds become painful to you.

Silly...

You know...I have a body almost identical to this girl. The LAST thing I would do is dress like that. I save that for my husband...not for the entire world to see. I also don't blame the airline...they probably thought she was a prostitute trying to "drum up buisiness" on their plane, and I wouldn't want my patrons bothered either if I were them! They should retract their apology...she deserves a good swift kick in the a$$ and that's about it!

Yes this is true.  :)  My kids are good about leaving the room or  whatever if I ask them to leave. ;)

Thank you!

the mother who finds so many sounds annoying might pay attention to sleep habits and stimulant intake. i often get very, very sensitive to sounds, but i've found it's usually when i've had too much caffiene and/or not enough sleep.  see if that helps.
I will start paying more attn to this and see if it makes a difference.  I think you are right actually.  Thanks! :)

Joan Here

Quote From: cndrlla

What you're forgetting is that Joan raised  those messes! If they have horrible manners, who do you think fell down on the job of teaching them better?

Also, they deliberately act like little piglets because they CAN! They know it annoys their mother, which shows lack of respect....again, something she's allowing.

She shouldn't gripe about something she herself has created.

OK... my kids were simply demonstrating what sounds DO bother me. They are actually quite good about leaving my presence when I ask them to do so.   My husband is probably the worst offender in most situations and "I" certainly did not raise HIM.  Trust me when I say I do not "allow" sloppy eating (far from it) and I certainly don't tolerate disrespectful attitudes among any of my six children.  (Including my 3 steps who were not on the show). ;)  I can see why you may have thought that though.  Joan
