(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

There are so many....

How about this.....  My boyfriend and I were at the movies. I get distracted by what he is doing.  Thinking he is clicking something  I turn to look.  In disbelief he is not only biting his nails, he is EATING them.  What the heck is that?  I have never seen someone chew their nails and swallow them.  I have been sickened anytime I think about it.  Or whenever we are out,if there is popcorn or chips he devours them.  No, I mean devour.  I am afraid to even put my hand in there.  Then he looks up and says, "man I am full, want anymore"   Anymore?  I havent had any.  I am open to suggestions on this one.

There's one more available seat on Southwest Airlines.  Shame on Kyla for acting like a child.  Shame on her lawyer for trying to extort more from Southwest Airlines than what they offered which, by the way, was a gracious apology and a generous gift of airline tickets.   In this time of heightened airline security, I applaud our flight attendants for their dedication and don't expect them to have to "police" guests attire.

Kyla....

I think that this is absolutely ridiculous this girl is just feeding off of her attorney she says what she needs to say because that is what everyone expects her to say. She first said the only thing that she wanted was an apology to make her self look like a victim....absolutely ridiculous it's time America save the courts time for lawsuits and litigations that actually matter....this girl had $$$$ in her mind the minute her mother sent the first complaint into Southwest. Have some pride in yourself put some clothes on and give it up go to college get a job and earn your money that way. I agree what happened to her was wrong it should not have been that big of a deal with what she was wearing but she has escalated into a much bigger issue than it ever should have been in the first place and she should be ashamed if she actually brings this to court

etiquette on plane

I agree with the flight attendant about telling the lady to keep her baby quite.  I beleive there is a place and time for kids and planes or resturants is not the place.  You think its really cute but everybody doesn't appreciate it

09/18 Etiquette

 Hi everyone!

I would just like to say that it's sad when people don't know when to let things roll off their shoulders. The women that had the child on the Flt and the Flt Attended said something to her about her child... I feel the issue is more about how the women was treated....it was defiantly not in a helpful friendly manner !! The comment about Baby Benadryl isn't that big of a deal. As a mom of 3 I have heard of that from all kinds of people, from a neighbor, a family member and doctors, most of the time it is being said to the person in a helpful manner. I wish the attitude of the Flt Attended would had been the real focus. I fly a lot, at least 10 or more times a year with 3 kids, my youngest now just 5 yrs old, second youngest 20 yrs old and my oldest 22 yrs old, I have noticed a big change in how the customer is being spoken to from the Flt Crew. It is not as Friendly as it use to be and that is ashame. I think its all in how you say something and a nice friendly face wouldn't hurt either.

One other thing, I know for an absolute fact that United Airlines would NOT say anything to a First Class Customer for wearing shorts UNLESS they are an Employee or flying on an Employee Pass. So, I have to wonder about the man that was on the show today??

I wish Dr. Phil would have had the "Other~ Side" there to tell their thought of what took place. Remember their is always two sides to a story.

I hope everyone has a nice evening!

Etiquette

My question about the girl who wore the supposedly inappropriate outfit on the airplane is why she did not wear it on the Dr Phil show?  It was obvious that she covered not only more of her legs but also her "ample" chest.  I don't think it was a coincidence.  Personally, if she wants to put her privates that close to the seats used by hundreds of others, so be it.

Now, about the mother with the kids that make the impolite chewing noises and such - as their mother, it is her job to teach them "proper" etiquette and table manners.  She only has herself to blame for their open mouth chewing and smacking.  She may not be able to get her adult husband to comply with her requests but as the children's mother, she should be teaching them to stop the poor manners, not because it annoys her but because it is simply bad manners in general.

Where has common sense, decorum, and manners gone in this society?!

Babies/Plane Etiquette

Once after being on the DFW tarmack for over 1 1/2 hrs. in over 100 degree heat, I had a young mom, dad and infant sitting directly behind me.  I've gotten used to tuning out crying babies, however; this infant had a bm that needed changing.  The father told her to take the infant to the bathroom and change the baby; but the mom told him she could change the baby in the seat.  I was over the back of the seat in an instant and told her to consider the rest of us and to please take the baby to the bathroom to change it.  Several of the other passengers applauded and asked the stewardess for air freshener as we had no air circulating through the plane.  Needless to say, I understand babies have no control over their bodily functions but the mother should have been more considerate to the rest of the plane.

09/18 Etiquette

Chrissy, I don't personally find it offensive, but I wouldn't call anyone by those terms. That is just me. I am pretty accepting of other people's differences and unless I believe they mean it to be offensive, I am ok with "dear", "sweetie", "honey".

I do think it offensive for a waitress or waiter to call someone by an endearment such as "sweetie", "dear",

"darlin", etc.  These are terms that I would want someone close to me to say, not someone I don't know.

noises

Quote From: jbbatwot

Could Joan possibly have Adult Attention Deficite Disorder?  ADDers are frequently disturbed by noises that irritate them: like chewing & smacking, pencil clicking, gum popping, clock ticking, etc.  I know, I live with one who can be extremely irritated by things that I barely hear.  Medication has helped a whole lot in our situation!

a Question???

Quote From: ladygrace

My husband & I took a wonderful trip to Hawaii for my 50th birthday.  We flew United.  We went to the airport in blue jeans and non offensive t-shirts.  Nothing ragged or anything like that.  We had planned to fly first class.  The attendant told us that we could not go first class wearing jeans and tennis shoes.  She asked if we had any other clothes in our suitcase.  I told her yes, but the suitcases were on the plane!  We told her that our daughter worked for United.  She said that our daughter should have told us about the dress code.  This lady was very snotty as well.  Also, they switched our flight.  I asked whether our luggage got switched as well.  I was told that our luggage could not go on a plane that we were not on.  We flew to Hawaii (not in first class!)...........our luggage did not.  It came late the second day.  We enjoyed our vacation.  When we got ready to fly home, we dressed differntly so we could fly first class.  Guess what we saw in the first class section?!  There were people in jeans and tennis shoes!!  Go figure.
