(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

09/18 Etiquette

Quote From: ladygrace

My husband & I took a wonderful trip to Hawaii for my 50th birthday.  We flew United.  We went to the airport in blue jeans and non offensive t-shirts.  Nothing ragged or anything like that.  We had planned to fly first class.  The attendant told us that we could not go first class wearing jeans and tennis shoes.  She asked if we had any other clothes in our suitcase.  I told her yes, but the suitcases were on the plane!  We told her that our daughter worked for United.  She said that our daughter should have told us about the dress code.  This lady was very snotty as well.  Also, they switched our flight.  I asked whether our luggage got switched as well.  I was told that our luggage could not go on a plane that we were not on.  We flew to Hawaii (not in first class!)...........our luggage did not.  It came late the second day.  We enjoyed our vacation.  When we got ready to fly home, we dressed differntly so we could fly first class.  Guess what we saw in the first class section?!  There were people in jeans and tennis shoes!!  Go figure.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THE RULE OF THE AIRLINES, FOR EMPLOYEES AND FAMILY WE DO HAVE A DRESS CODE AND YOUR DAUGHTER SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU.

Dr. Phil missed it on this one.  I also saw the today show interview.  I too saw that when she sat down she was clearly wearing white underwear.  There was a CLEAR view of her crotch.  Also, when she tried to cross her legs, the "skirt" rode up so high as to expose half of her buttocks.  I would have been offended were I forced to fly with her.  I also saw a different photo of her "outfit" taken at the airline/airport.  Her tank top was pulled down to just above the nipple in that photo, and her skirt was pulled up to just below her crotch.  Just because she pulls her top up and skirt down to make it appear more decent on her interviews doesn't mean she was dressed appropriately at the time.  If I had a child, or husband even, on that flight, I would have complained.

I think it is a sad commentary on our society that people would defend this woman, and that she be able to sue an airline over dressing like a prostitute and offending other paying passengers.  Why doesn't she feel embarrassed or ashamed of her behavior?  If I had worn a skirt so small I inadvertently showed my panties (and possibly some of my butt cheeks as well) to a airplane full of people or a national audience on the Today show, I would be humiliated!  Not indignant!  And I don't feel you have a right to sue a company for asking you to stop showing your goods to the rest of their customers.  I mean go work at the Bunny Ranch, they'll love you there.

I am frequently disgusted by what passes for acceptable attire these days.  Not that I am a prude, but my husband and I have been to some very nice restaurants and they allow people in wearing sweat pants, athletic suits, ratty jean shorts and flip flops.  Everywhere I go I see some girl or woman in pajama pants in public.  Just today I saw a young girl getting off of a school bus wearing pajama pants.  Who lets their children go to school dressed like that? I think it is dispicable that people can not bother to throw on a decent pair of jeans or slacks to go out to a restaurant.  There doesn't seem to be any standards anymore.
I totally agree!  I thought I was the only one that noticed her flash on the Today Show.  Her dress is appropriate for her job at Hooters!  Shame on her mom for not teaching her there are appropriate times for certain types of dress.  Plus she had to have her mommy write a letter to the airline - she couldn't do it herself?!?  She was just waiting for an apology so she can go forth with her lawsuit - they admitted they were wrong so they owe me money.  She's not filing a lawsuit to get Southwest's policy changed she just wants to get rich quick!   I seriously doubt the airline employee announced over the loudspeaker so everyone could hear the conversation.  Why didn't Dr Phil present Southwest's side of the story?  She refused the tickets so she can say she didn't get anything from them.  Thanks a lot for screwing all the taxpayers so you can live the high life Kyla.  I'm on Southwest's side on this.

Smacking

Quote From: kereynol

I too have the problem Joan has.  Smacking noises, loud or crunchy chewing, gum popping or smacking, loud MP3 players (just to name a few).  My family knows it bothers me and usually will stop before it irritates me too much.  I dont know if she has ADD, but I have panic disorder, and maybe she could have that.

The sounds of people eating really bothers me, and I know it's not normal. I was very excited that Dr. Phil said he'd have resources available on this site...and the only thing I can find is the relaxation cds I can buy from Dr.Lawliss....is that the resource? Is that what he's setting her up with at home or is there something else on the page that I can look at and get help with this? The noises drive me nuts and that drives my family nuts!! So basically we're all going nuts. It's not workin' for me, Dr. Phil!

09/18 Etiquette

Quote From: jackeyld

First of all as a former Southwest Airlines employee I was really annoyed by the lawyersaying they may sue so this doensn't happen to anyone else, and that airline employees should be trained how to handle this.  First of all I think it is more important to train airline employees on how to handle terrorist threats and safety on a plane first and foremost and while the employee probably handled it wrong, I'm sure she wasn't sitting so demurely like she is in the only photo they show of her in this outfit. Also airplanes are cold.  Even if I am going somewhere warm I bring a sweater on a plane because it always so cold and she obviously dresses in a miniskirt on an airplane to draw some attention to herself.  If the flt att.  said she was hot and wanted her number I'm sure she would have been pleased.  Airline employees do not make very much money and it is a very stressful job.  Dealing with weather, safety measures, security which is constantly changing and pleasing people at 5:00am every day can take it's toll.  People love to hear bad airline stories.   Also maybe another passenger complained about her attire and the employee was trying to make them happy. Who knows?  I am sick of people bashing airline employees who have no clue what they go through every day and for the most part are very friendly.  Nice airline employees don't make for good TV.
I agree.  I've seen the documentary "Airline" about what Southwest Airlines employees go through on a daily basis.  I told my husband I don't know how these people remain so calm and deal with all the unreasonable people.  I haven't seen one episode where I thought Southwest was in the wrong.  About the Kyla issue I haven't even heard Southwest's version of the incident so we take her version as gospel?

Air Travel & Ear Pain

For those of you who suffer ear problems when flying, there are special earplugs made to help eliminate or at least minimize the pressure.  They are called EarPlanes, and are available in both adult and child sizes.  Hope they help!

Definition

Quote From: annieorwell

It was really a rhetorical question.

Taste is objective. Your definition isn't THE definition, it is only YOUR definition.

As for freedom...she hurt no one. She is free to do as she wants as long as she hurts no one.

Perhaps you mean "subjective," ie, "in the eye of the beholder" rather than "objective," ie, "there is one and ONLY one standard [for taste]."

As I've read through the posts concerning "Skirtgate," I can't help thinking -- how many times has she flown SWA before? Of those, how often did she wear the same, or a similar, outfit? As a previous poster mentioned, all it took would have been ONE complaint that the attire was "offensive" (yet ANOTHER subjective term!) for the airline to boot her (apparently barely clad) fanny off the flight. My guess is some busybody decided they had nothing better to do that day than to be the Fashion Police. Whether I would have been "offended," dunno. I wasn't on the flight. I doubt I would have noticed, or cared enough to make a stink to the airline.

BTW, for all of you who have invoked the "family" aspect and mentioned theme parks, it's worse than on an airline, not better. I've seen some attire in theme parks that made me wonder how they were allowed inside the gate.

bratty baby

As an airline captain I can accurately say that people are only removed from aircraft in the most extreme situations.  Someone being rude or a baby making noise is NOT enough justificatin to have them removed from the aircraft.  I have very accurate behind the scenes knowledge regarding the "bratty baby" situation in question and I can assure you that the mother is not being honest regarding the behavior of her child.  Notice that the child did not appear on this show.  That is probably because this mother and her child appeared on a nationally broadcast morning news show shortly after she was removed from the flight and on that show her child behaved so terribly that he had to be removed from the set.  Also, the only reason the captain who made the decision to back up his/her flight attendant in this situation has not issued a statement is because his/her company policy strictly prohibits flight crew members from issuing any form of media statement.  Otherwise I am sure we would all hear a very different side to this story...

Oh Please

I have four daughters, ages 19 - 24, and I hope they would have more common sense when choosing what to wear when traveling. I mean, come on, I saw Kyla's appearance on the Today show, and I could clearly see her underwear when she sat down. As far as bringing negative attention to herself, she did that, and thank god she will not be doing anymore talk shows about this. I am a paralegal and she has not suffered any permanent damage, unless the courts are now giving settlements for a bruised ego!

09/18 Etiquette

Quote From: irlyshdnt

Wow,  i am ssssooooo much like the woman who can't stand gum chewing, clinking of dishes, etc.  I actually made a colleague toss out her gum before we went into a class together. I doubt we'll be carpooling again!  I say that i have "sensory issues".  I do eat with my family and I DO ask my husband to stop sucking his teeth three hours after the meal is gone.  People opening candy wrappers in  movie theaters drive me nuts.  I want to run over there and open the box for them.  I better not be able to hear you chewing your food either.  I do not impose my beliefs on everyone....okay, depending where i am in my cycle, maybe i do "hint" a little.  But seriously, my friends and i joke about it and i do try to redirect my thoughts to something else, like maybe the girl across from me wearing too short a skirt and showing me her underwear(which i hope to hell she's wearing).....ha ha ha.  SERIOUSLY, i wish that it didn't bother me so much.  my idea of a nightmare would be someone cracking their gum while trying to open their red licorice box and calling my "honey".  Maybe i should up my meds...

So glad I'm not alone in my cringing when people do these things.  The one that gets me in theatres is the open-mouthed chomping on popcorn on all sides when I want to hear the movie :-)  I'm all for the whole movie-going experience before the film roles, but then I want to be able to enjoy what I paid for.  Thankfully the bags are generally empty or forgotten soon enough.  The constant silverware klinking on plates or bowls can drive me nuts, too

I have classmates who chomp their gum, one also smacks her lips with every bite when she eats in class.  Gum is supposedly forbidden in the program (and food in certain rooms) according to every syllabus we've received because the classes center around American Sign Language - the face and mouth are used to convey information.  Classes taught by Deaf instructors, with voices banned in the room, are particularly quiet.  So the noise is that much more noticeable.  Some days it's very hard to suck it up and not say anything because, basically, who the heck am I to complain?  I did ask one person, who I'm pretty good friends with, to not chomp during a final once.  Thankfully she was receptive to the request in that situation.

I'm not having any luck finding the tips for dealing with this stress response on the website.  Just saw the link to the CD set.  Anyone find that info, yet?
