(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

i am disgusted

hi dr.phil i really enjoy watching your show, when i seen about the airlines and how they treated people of the way they dressed, i was apauled, we see sex every where on t.v. and how people, especially stars the way they dress and that is socially acceptable, when when it comes to us regular "joes" we are centred out, the last time i checked, here in canada and the u.s., we are a free country, and if companies like the airlines, are going to start dictating how people are to dress, my question is , when did north america become under dictatorship, and who decided this?   thank you so much and keep up the good show, i especially love watching the dr.phil house.                      thank you  a confused watcher in canada

I find it interesting that so many posters have said if a dress code wasn't clearly posted then it shoudln't matter.

What about common sense and common decency? What about self respect and respect for others?

This past weekend hubby and I took the kids and grandbaby to a local amusment park. As we were waiting for my grandbaby and son-in-law to get off the ride they were on a couple of girls in the skylift going overhead spit down and just missed my husband and I and a young couple pushing their baby in a stroller.

The father of the baby looked up and yelled at them not to spit and one of the girls flipped him the bird.

There was no sign posted anywhere stating that spitting or giving the finger is prohibited. And no one was injured. However when I went to the ride attendents of the skylift and told them what happened they promptly called security to wait for the girls on the other side of the park and escort them off the premises.

People need to show some common sense and common courtesy for other people and and not think that everything is just a free-for-all unless it is posted in black and white in foot high letters for all to see.

How do you equate wearing a short skirt with nearly spitting on someone and then using an obsene gesture? Where's your common sense? These two situations are not even remotely the same.

A little over the top.

Dr Phil,

I'm astonished this is a very slippery slope, I wouldn't fly that airline for nothing!!! They should be ashamed and good for Kyla for making a fuss. Public humiliation is never going to be the answer. If they were so concerned about  her attire, how is it that she was able to board the plane before the issue of her attire was questioned?

How about this, was it age discrimination because she is young. If she were 35 and dressed similarly or more provactively would she have been treated the same way? I bet not! Was someone on a power trip or intimidated because she is young and attractive and confident.

I used to watch that television show about southwest and the more I watched the more insane their whole corporate concept / policies seemed to me.

I'm always going to be on the side individuality. If the "sight" of Kyla's outfit was offensive, what will be found to be offensive next ? obesity ?people have to see fat people too, or certain colors? Burkas? Afros? Southwest just lost my business til the end of time!!!

Come on...seriously? A woman being asked to leave a plane because of, in my opinion, an inapproriate outfit, degenerates to women in burkas? Really now. If you want to get all high and mighty about freedom and rights...what about the rest of the passengers that found the outfit offensive? Are they important? I know they aren't on a media campaign frenzy...but, there is a time and place for everything. I wouldn't want her exposed to my children, in a trapped space where they can't leave. That infringes on the rights of others too, so go fight for them now and say that short skirts have lost your business until the end of time.

What drives me through the wall is someone who chews their ice!!!  I almost have to leave the room.  Anybody else have this problem?

Me too!  Whats the etiquette on ice chewing?  Is it bad for the teeth?  I suggest that its bad for the person doing it but I have no proof of that.

Bad behavior? What "bad behavior" are you talking about? It's bad behavior to dress in a way you dislike?

How did her clothing disregard others? I don't feel disregarded.

yes, you don't. Others do & did.

The "bad behavior" is her apparent greed for the spot light & now cash from the airline for what amounts to her embarrassment. Also, the idea that dressing in a way that anyone with common sense would realize would offend most people is a "good idea".

Seriously, tailoring back your wants  a bit or at least saving them for more appropriate occasions & consideration for others is a "good thing".

What do people do the majority of the time they are on a plane? They sit. Is it really that hard to consider your attire? Are people just that self-centered anymore? I can't but think they are... and that makes me very sad.

That's right...(insert sarcasm) She should get to dress however she wants & it's everyone else's fault for noticing. Blinders should be worn by more than just horses!

Please!

Ever heard of accountability for your own actions? She chose to dress in a way that anyone with commonsense would recognize at "attention gathering" and then got embarrassed because the attention wasn't all "good"... and was actually asked to (at least) place a blanket in her lap. Heaven forbid the embarrassment she must have felt. (rolls eyes) Oh the agony!

You're so right! (insert sarcasm) Asking a woman to cover her exposed crotch or change her "skirt" is just one step away from taking away her right to drive, vote, leave her home alone... work!

Are you serious?

WHY FOR JOAN PILLS AND NOT PARENTING

Joan should take responsibility for their children chewing gum with their mouths open,  blowing bubbles  in an enclosed area and not outside.  The older son banging his spoon inside a bowl.  Then the little girl crunching ice.  These are all bad manners.   We have four children and seven grandchildren and they know not to make noice when eating  that is preventable,  and not upsetting to others around.   Joans husband making noise with the sunflower seed is his way of getting her undivided attention when he knows it drives her crazy.  Even though all of the above is upsetting to her,  they each have her attention and this is what matters to them.  In the end,  I don't feel the girls would smack their gum with a date or the son bang his spoon against the bowl with a girlfriend.
