(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Chewing Ice

Quote From: karen567

Me too!  Whats the etiquette on ice chewing?  Is it bad for the teeth?  I suggest that its bad for the person doing it but I have no proof of that.

I just joined the dr phil message boards yesterday,HOWEVER I must let you know that ice chewing truthfully makes me want to pull my hair out,I am not sure why,but it does!Of course crunching of chips, hard candy etc also drives me nuts,it really is nice to see I am not alone. When someone does crunch on ice or anything like that,if possible I leave the room.My poor husband trys to crunch silently, thank goodness I am blessed with such a awsome husband!

Take Care

Check out Youtube

Quote From: adrienne9660

Hi, I have the same problem. When my husband eats his chips he crunches woth his mouth wide open. (It's like he does it intentionally) even though he may not be). It is just so boisterous that I could just sew his lips together.(that is a little extreme but my reaction feels extreme) And you are soooooooo right about the auditory thing because I have the same thing going on.As soon as that cetain noise happens I can't even hear anything but that! I swear I though I was the only one like that . I am soooo relieved to knwo that I am not the only noise sensitive person.

Did anyone ever get with yo about that advice section because I can't seem to find it either.

..

Thanks!

Adrienne

While you try googling MISOPHONIA or HYPERACUSIS also check the "Hating Sounds" clip on youtube.  It was put out by a co-sufferer before this Dr. Phil episode came out to tell people that they were not crazy and that he had found the diagnosis for it.  I think his feelings are a bit extreme but it is my son, not me, who suffers with this.  He says it is a pretty accurate description.

This is not autism

Quote From: willium

I don't agree autistic ,its called excellent hearing I can hear threw brick walls and when people are GUM popping Gum Chewing , slurping on coffee , chewing on ICE these are real distractions that are toxic people Oh! and repetitive sniffling people that go to school with colds ,and don't blow there noses should be more curtious to these things cause it is gross to have to listen to everyone jumps up to the sink when the tap is dripping its the same thing .
While some people with hyperacusis are autistic many are not.  Misophonia is not the same thing as hyperacusis.  With Misophonia the sounds that bother suffers are usually only certain sounds.  Sounds like lip smacking, chewing, etc. cause a visceral reaction.  With hyperacusis sometimes even flourescent lights seem loud and distracting.

Kayla's back

Did anyone see that Kayla is BACK on TV complaining that Southwest Airlines used her name in one of it's advertisements?  Southwest apologized to her by name and asked her to keep flying on their airline.  She was on yet another show telling them to keep her name out of their ads.  She's not going to end this.  The only way this will end is for her to take the airline to court and for the judge to throw it out and yell at her for being such a greedy, inappropriate, vacuous baby.  Then hopefully the judge will yell at her mother for raising such a self-indulgent little girl who won't give this up, yet can't put together a cohesive argument for why she continues to do it.

Right ON!!!!!!

Quote From: anomalytc

 Dr. Phil,
You got it wrong this time.  Southwest was right to tell that young woman to put more clothes on.  I don't want to see anyone's underwear when I'm in public, male or female.

She had obviously pulled down her skirt and shirt to make it more chaste.  In a civil society we need to wear clothing.  What about social norms and standards?  You got it wrong.  People ned to wear clothes when they go out!

I agree. What about my right not to see someone's hiney exposed? I would have complained also. Dr. Phil, I had to applaud you when you chastized her regarding the law suit. Howe ridiculous. i also have a real problem with the fact that she originally took the airline tickets from southwest and then when you commented about the pending lawsuit, she gave them back, If she didn't want them or had decided not to fly Soutwest again, she should have NEVER taken the tickets from you in the first place.

I am so sick and tired of frivolous lawsuits because someone didn't like something someone did. what if everyone sued because of rights violation. Our courts system would be tied up forever!!!!! Society has gotten too loose with their acceptance of things. Like unwed mothers, abortion, and too short skirts. I'm not saying we should move back to the dark ages, just whatever happened to modesty????

I thought I was the only one!

Quote From: jbbatwot

Could Joan possibly have Adult Attention Deficite Disorder?  ADDers are frequently disturbed by noises that irritate them: like chewing & smacking, pencil clicking, gum popping, clock ticking, etc.  I know, I live with one who can be extremely irritated by things that I barely hear.  Medication has helped a whole lot in our situation!

jbbatwot

I have to say, it feels great for me to read all of this because I have been dealing with the same things as all of these people.  I just so happened to read a book about ADD (to diagnose someone else!) and then realized it sounded just like me instead!  It mentioned that people who are disturbed by continuous noises (chewing gum, ticking clocks, etc etc...) and can't seem to move past them as if nothing else is going on in the room, are people who have the signs of ADD.  We focus on that one noise, and can't cope with it - I was floored!  I was not diagnosed with this, however it was a relief to read that the problems I've been dealing with my whole life may actually have an explanation.  My friends and family cannot understand why these things bother me.

Something else I can't stand is the sound of muffled tv noise through the walls, and snoring.  What medication helps your friend?!

Dealing with Stress

Quote From: gungrabbergirl

I got a reply from the moderator and followed the  instructions....no help there. I hate to ask again, but I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble finding the help mentioned. Also relieved to know I'm not alone with this problem!!

Family section

Quote From: annieorwell

Seriously...kids get louder when they are together. That is a TERRIBLE idea.

If someone is kicking your seat just turn around and politely ask them to stop. How hard is that?

I disagree. If children act worse when they are together, how can they go to school? There they don't have all the mommies to help keep them quiet.

I have raised my children.  Who, by the way, behaved in public. I think EVERY public place should enforce "family sections" just like the old "smoking" sections. I am a non smoker, but I would rather be in a room full of smokers than a room full of noisy kids.

I have grandchildren of all ages from 20 years to 7 months. My grandchildren behave in public places.

No one has ever said to quiet them down or even glared in our direction. Maybe it's because my grandchildren go to church and behave in all public places the way they were TAUGHT to behave in church.

I hope some brat kicks your seat-back for 2 hours and the mother tells you to move if you don't like it.

And that it's not your place to boss her kids.

Are you serious?

Quote From: humpback

We're talking corporations here.  One airline apologized - months later - on the Dr. Phil show.  This is extreme!!!  A consumer shouldn't have to get to that point, on national TV, in order to be satisfied.  Corporate America is scamming us in every direction - i.e., phone companies, health insurance companies,  + 1000 etc.'s.  Customer service is getting worse by the year.  Corporate America is not only violating our rights and our pocketbooks...they are invading and violating the moral fiber of this nation and we're letting them!!!   We have to "clog up our judicial system"  in order to stand up for ourselves.  If we didn't, you'd currently be totally controlled by our government and by big business.  Both entities are carving away at our freedoms bit by bit, every day.  You're talking apples and oranges when you mentioned Wal Mart as a comparison.  This wasn't an "inconvenience" these women suffered.  This was an antrocity that violated human dignity and freedom.  This IS the big picture!!  And, if people like you think THIS situation is an "inconvenience", just wait until it's your turn.  I guarantee you will feel violated!!!

Corporations are not the problem in this country. If we don't buy from them they don't survive.

People who don't report unlawful events that they have knowledge of is our big problem. When did being am honest person and reporting wrongdoing become "being a rat" and stealing and other crimes become cool?

I have been a business owner and am certainly a customer of big corps. and small businesses.

Polls have been shown that 75% of customers in a retail store setting will steal. And, this is sick, 80% of EMPLOYEES steal from their employer. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. How many people do you know haw committed a crime and you have not reported them?????
