(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Kyla is right!

Kyla did absolutely the right thing to reject those tickets! And she should not let it go!  How are they otherwise going to be pressured to change their staff training? It is absolutely unacceptable to treat a paying client in this way!

And then having the gall to try and buy them off with two tickets!  It is not as though she was sitting in her underwear.  I think that attendant is a hypocrite. Next time you are on a flight, try to see under a girl's skirt, no matter how short it is. You would have to be lying upside down, on top of her, with your head between her legs  to do that, because of the rows being so close together!  And even if you could do that, you would see no more than you would see on a beach, looking at a girl who is wearing a bikini!

Since 911 US airlines, domestic or otherwise think they have a blanket right to treat customers any way they like.  A lot of abuse is going on as a continuation of the 911 events, and staff is not being trained away from that mentality, taught to make a distinction between a housekeeping issue and a security issue.

Also, it is WAY too easy for pilots and staff to get away with the "turn the plane around" idea.  The entire flight of passengers should sue such a airline for loss of time and income.  I would, especially if the reason for the turn-around is not a serious security or actual flight safety related issue.

I think the entry requirements for being a flight attendant is too low, causing a lot of airlines to become "white trash trailers", staffed by people who do not have the social or life skills to interact with paying customers.

Just my 2c worth

Thanks

09/18 Etiquette

The one thing that bothers me the most regarding people and ettiquette is people who swear a lot.  I don't mind an occasional word here and there, but some people, when they talk, make it every second word in their conversation and that really bothers me.  Especially some of my colleagues who that do that on their job (we're security guards), because I was taught that no matter what kind of job you do, you should always present yourself in a professional manner and not swear.

Call it what it is...

Dr Phil,

I heard you tell Tom “You brought drugs into the jail?” Tom tells you, “No, I never brought drugs into the jail”. You ask again, “You never brought drugs into the jail?” Tom says “Only alcohol”. Just alcohol.

Why, in this day and age, can’t we see that alcohol is a drug??? When there are people killed each and every day by drunk drivers. They are people who have no regard for the millions of people that they endanger.

In my opinion, the reason that this isn’t brought to terms is because it could be any one of them that gets caught driving drunk. Could be the wife of a Senator, the Police Chief’s brother in law, the Judge or the Judge’s Mom. It might happen to be someone’s cousin, sister or brother, one of the legislators, lobbyists, or a police officer.  It is just too much. We know they do it; it’s in the papers every day. 6th DUI, 17th DUI, assault on a police officer, any of the other many charges that the drunks account for.

It is time someone address the problem!! Not just brush it under the rug and say “Oh well, it was just alcohol”. Tell that to the families affected by drunk drivers. FYI, I live in New Mexico, and we have one of the highest rates of DUI. I have personally been involved in an accident that was caused by a drunk driver. My husband and son are recovering alcoholics. We don’t drink, but most of all:  WE DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!

Just don’t do it.

Linda

Where did all the CLASS & TACT go?

Both CLASS and TACT are severely lacking in this country and I am guilty of both infractions myself at times.

We have become a society that tells all our dirt and thinks it's cool. We show little respect to our bodies, have no clue what privacy means and devalue it. We think looking beautiful and looking trashy are synonomous. And we confuse being confident and assertive with being mean and aggressive. Instead of using well-chosen words, we often use profanity and hate-filled words.

We need self-control, self-respect and an ability to put others before ourselves. We have to grow up, act responsible and be the classy, tactful, decent Christian (or other spiritual) people we were meant to be.

Once I refused to live in chaos and anger and resentment, my life became so wonderful. My family couldn't be happier or healthier!

As for people's nasty little habits, those habits can be broken if they truly wish to break them. If they don't, others must just decide if they want to be around them.

Not the Full Story

I feel like the whole story with Kyla is not being told. In a previous interview with Kyla it was revealed that a pilot saw her boarding the plane and was offended by her outfit and that is why she was asked to leave.

I just think there is more to this story than what is being told. I think this pilot (sorry Kyla) might've mistaken her for a porn actress or something like that and I think he was letting his male hormones dictate his decision.

I feel Kyla's story is about chauvenism, not etiquette. It's about a man getting angry by what he thought was a provocation because he obviously watches too many "movies" or reads too many "magazines" and feels guilty about it.

That's not the problem

Quote From: kathie_kay

Ms. Ebbert's attire brings to mind two words:  'slut' and 'prostitute.'  How nauseating.  The first time I ever saw such a short skirt was in Hawaii in July of this year, 2007, as my family and I waited near a street corner for a lift to the airport at 5:00 am.  The lady of the night was wearing a short stretch skirt and she stretched it down several times to best hide what was or was not underneath.

I would puke if I thought I was about to sit in a seat where Ms. Ebbert sat.  How gross!!

On Dr. Phil, she was given an apology from SWA.  But that wasn't good enough.  She still might sue.  I don't know if that happened.

Thank goodness she wore a longer skirt for the show.  Too bad her mother tried to out-do her with attire that wasn't meant for such a worn-out figure.

Do they both crave attention?

You really think these "ladies of the night" are the problem, or is it really the men that seek them out? I mean, if she was trying to cover up, what do you care? And what do you care anyway? And how do you even know if she was what you thought she was? These women are not the problem, they are only a symptom of a greater issue and while chastizing them may make you feel better, it will not resolve the issue.

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: gingerw126

That is one thing that makes me crazy.  When I am putting food in my mouth and someone blows their nose.  It happened in a nice casino resturant once and I just don't understand why people don't realize what they are doing.  I do not want to think about nose fluid when I am eating.

A woman at work does it every day during lunch.

I leave the room when I need to blow my nose.

People with sinus problems don't have that option.  It comes on suddenly.  Once, I went to the doctor with an unusual complaint:  I have lost my sense of smell.  I drove the automobile over a dead skunk in the middle of the road.  The kids sang the traditional song that accompanies this occassion. "stinking to high heaven."  I didn't smell a thing.

It's a nice message, but bad on-line etiquette.

I think this was supposed to be on yesterday's program, not today's.

Calling flight attendants "trailer" trash does not indicate that you have the good manners or good taste to dictate how airlines should train their staff.
