(Original Air Date: 09/18/07) Does it annoy you to no end when someone uses a cell phone at the dinner table or chews with his or her mouth open? Along with author Peggy Post, Dr. Phil tackles the dos and don’ts of etiquette. One issue making recent headlines is appropriate in-flight attire. Kyla was flying to Phoenix on Southwest Airlines when an employee informed her that her outfit was too skimpy. Kyla saw nothing wrong with the way she was dressed and was appalled when she was asked to cover up. Did the airline go overboard, or was Kyla too tantalizing for take-off? Then, Kate took her 19-month-old son on his first flight, but she was removed from the plane when he became too talkative. Was the airline out of line for telling Kate to shut her baby up? Peggy Post weighs in on this polarizing problem. And, Joan says she doesn’t have any peace at home because of all the noise her family makes – from loud chewing to clinking dinnerware. Her husband, Bob, says he and their three children have to walk on eggshells around Joan just to eat dinner. Is Joan overly sensitive, or does her family need to be reined in? Plus, meet a woman who says her husband’s bad manners didn’t disturb her until she had a baby, and a guest who nominated herself as having the worst etiquette in the country! Share your own etiquette peeves and join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Noise Sensitivity

Quote From: cndrlla

I am amazed at the number of people posting on this board who are saying they have this sound sensitivity problem! I thought I was alone.

We live in such a horribly noisy world that it's no wonder we are all sick to death of it and want to run screaming to find a peaceful, quiet place.

How about those new TV shows where you can barely hear the dialogue because of the loud, annoying, truly no-talent, whiny, bleating crap that passes for singing that you have to suffer through the whole show? Now that REALLY makes me crazy! It's a shame, too, because a lot of these shows are really good...except for that.

We are also inundated with rude, obnoxious people who have the manners of a billy goat because parents are too lazy to teach their kids basic manners at all. I know if I had chewed with my mouth open when I was a kid I'd have been made to leave the table. I was taught consideration and I taught my kids the same....I could take them anywhere and be assured that they would behave themselves and use those manners!

I have an extremly serious noise sensitivity issue.  So severe, in fact, that when people I love, even my daughters are eating something crunchy, (which can be about anything) my brain envisions extremly violent thoughts ( that I would never, EVER act on, but they are scary, none-the-less) to the point where I envision ripping their jaws off their heads so they can never make that noise again.  Random people in a resturant crunching?  I'll break your plate and stab the shards in your throat to make you stop. (Again, not really, but that's where my mind turns immediatly)  My rage at crunching is scary to me at times.  I often avoid situations where I know I'm going to be in a "crunchy" enviroment.

I think someone said that a mental illness could be the problem with hearing things differently, I feel that may be the truth here.

Has anyone else smashed their TV set because of a cereal commercial??

Thank God there was dr. Phil to make Soutwest Airlines give in and apologize. What about other people who don't have him on their side. Of course that young woman should sue. And that the doctor made her feel uncomfortable about her right to do that makes me wonder about his relationship with Southwest Airlines.

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: shmigelz

What did you think people would say. especially professional people, who are professionally dressed, wearing proper clothing for a regular flight...

Kyla you dressed like a total.....Well what can I say on these forums thats acceptable...Like trash? is that ok?

Kyla your totally FAKE. Your tan is FAKE, your personality is FAKE, you say you want nothing more done about the situation BUT yet you come on the Dr. PHIL SHOW! where 10 million + people watch daily...

Come on Kyla anyone, any person and especially and guy with the smarts of a Grade 6 student can see right through you... The only reason your on the Dr. Phil show is so that people can see you infront of a large audience, you think somehow it will give you your 15 seconds of fame.... LOL how about this instead... 15 seconds of shame!

Kyla, its only an airplane, not some stripper bar so you can wear jeans, jogging pants and a sweater.. Its a plane ride, why dont you wear something comfortable to help deal with those economy room seats, you know they are tight for room....SO why wear a super short skirt and some 'by the way' to tight shirt to go along with your fake and bake tan that you got in some tanning bed cause you can't afford a trip to Mexico.

Kyla just please be yourself, you will get along farther ahead and not make a fool out of yourself... You may not get on The Dr. Phil show again but if you cry and complain enough you may make the Montel Williams show if hes still even on the air...

GOD knows if you went on someone important and respected like Nancy Grace that she would tear a strip out of you on a repeated occasion... Oh yea and the same goes for Judge Judy just incase your trying to get on that reality show too....

Soooo sad, sheesh some things people do to try and get noticed...

Next time I go on a passenger plane, Im gonna wear nothing but super short, cut off jeans, no underwear and some torn, stained wife beater shirt!!! LOL!!!

The things some people who thing they are attractive do for any action they can get... Sooo pathetic!!!

I notice you felt a need to mention Kyla's fake tan. We live in a day where getting a tan from the sun is harmful, it can cause UV damage and skin cancer. For all you know Kyla was using a tanning lotion, which is a non-harmful alternative to baking in the sun. I agree with everything else you said, but you shouldn't go off on women with fake tans. You'll be surprised, when they're older they'll be the ones with nice skin, cause they didn't cook themselves.

Quote From: super_sarah_j

I need to know are you a mom or a dad?  have you ever had a sick baby?? if not then you dont know what its like to fly with a small child. Its hard to have kids and fly. Trying to keep a small child confind to a seat and quite is the most hardest thing I have ever had to do. What are you going to do next time a overweight person sits next to you and their are is touching you ???

I would love to see you fly with a sick baby and we'll see who is a baby.

By the way, just so you know I didn't tell you wether I'm a mom or a dad in my previous post, is because parents feel they're justified in treating non-parents as lesser than them. Being a parent doesn't magically make you super human, you're just like everyone else. It therfore isn't of consequence wether or not I'm a parent. I don't need to have a child, in order to share the same society you do, or has that changed?

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: budabuda

Cause poor little Kyla never has felt embarressed in her life. "Boo-hoo, why isn't everyone treating me like a precious little princess. Don't people see how beautiful I am? Can't they see I deserve to be treated like a queen!"

Perhaps this is karmic revenge, for all the times she's treated less than beautiful women like dirt, cause she's felt she's better than them. Oh, and don't tell me I'm presuming that she has. Only someone so manipulative as to go on TV and demand an apology from an airline, and then sue on second thought. Must've have learned how to be that manipulative from being in one of those snobby cliques in high school.

No, but I have definitely wanted to over a great many commercials! I HATE commercials!! And any food commercial drives me nuts...they all eat like hogs!

You do have a serious problem, though....it must be terribly scary for you, and your life must be very unpleasant. Can you get some professional help? There are a lot of mental health resources available that charge on a sliding fee scale. Get some help so you can live a peaceful life.

Good luck.

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: jbbatwot

Could Joan possibly have Adult Attention Deficite Disorder?  ADDers are frequently disturbed by noises that irritate them: like chewing & smacking, pencil clicking, gum popping, clock ticking, etc.  I know, I live with one who can be extremely irritated by things that I barely hear.  Medication has helped a whole lot in our situation!

* Like many other viewers, I'm sure, having grown up among well-mannered people (not animals), I found the eating habits of Joan's family featured on Dr. Phil's March 6th show to be very unpleasant.
* Dr.PHIL:  What were you thinking by letting that slide? Your etiquette expert didn't seem to have anything to say about their unappealing lack of "manners" and consideration for their mother.
* Lack of consideration for their mother's position implies that they just don't give a hoot about her.
* Offering help for Joan to deal with annoyances did not seem to address their animal-like eating habits.
* I agree that we could all make efforts to deal with the unpleasant actions of others: however, with those annoying eating noises, I am VERY surprised that Dr. Phil did not seem to address the methods that her family members display in food consumption.
* Surely, Robin would not put up with that at her dinner table or TV.
***** JOAN:  Maybe you could do a video recording of each family member in those situations and ask how they would feel if their friends were to view them and their disgusting habits!
* Wishing you well mannered company at breakfast, lunch, dinner, TV time.         - Kathryn K. in Canada

03/06 Etiquette Dilemmas

Quote From: yoshiyoshi

It reminds me of an episode of Family Guy, where they parodied the Ghost Whisperer by having Jennifer Hewitt's breasts drawn excessively huge. She's talking to a ghost, and asking why he came back, and the ghost is saying "uh..". Like he's trying to come up with something other than, to see the chick with the huge boobs.

The funny thing is, I've been watching this show since it started and I don't think her boobs were that big in the beginning.

Can you say "silicone"?

What you're forgetting is that Joan raised  those messes! If they have horrible manners, who do you think fell down on the job of teaching them better?

Also, they deliberately act like little piglets because they CAN! They know it annoys their mother, which shows lack of respect....again, something she's allowing.

She shouldn't gripe about something she herself has created.

So you adimt that you are not a parent. So you have never had to help a crying child and not know what is wrong with them. I'm not saying that I'm super mom, but I would love to see you for one day with a young child on a plane and see how you handle it.
