(Original Air Date: 09/20/07) Most everyone has thought about removing imperfections -- a nip here, a tuck there. But some people want plastic surgery to erase their ethnic identity! First up is James. He says he doesn’t want to change anything about himself because Asians are intellectually superior, and women should obey men. His wife, Roseanna, says he’s a controlling racist who demeans women, and she says she needs help before he corrupts their 11-year-old son. James says he’s ready to serve Roseanna her walking papers if she doesn’t become more obedient. Is James a controlling bigot or simply misunderstood? Then, Dr. Phil explores the pros and cons of eyelid surgery -- one of the most common cosmetic procedures for Asian women … and one of the most controversial! He talks to a woman who had a fold added to her upper eyelid, a plastic surgeon who performs these procedures and two guests who believe the surgery erases Asian heritage. Plus, Brad says he hates his nose, and he wants plastic surgery to look less Italian. His mother, Debbie, says she loves the way he looks -- big schnoz and all! Brad’s surgery is only a month away. Can Debbie convince him he's perfect just the way he is before he goes under the knife? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

03/26 "Change My Face, Change My Race"

I think it is so sad that Hollywood has such an influence on society.  When I look at Hollywood, I see "white" people.  Before I go any further, let me state that I am white.  I completely proud of who I am however, so many are not.  Most white people do not have any heritage.  We simply say  I have "some German", or "some Indian", et cetera.  I wish I had ethnic background to speak of.  I do not understand why all of these beautiful cultures want to take away from their God-given beauty to become more like a race of people that are basically mutts.  I certainly do not mean to offend "white" people.  I am merely trying to make a point.  I would love to see more African-American women being wonderfully and beautifully themselves.  I would love to see Aisian women embrace their delicate features.  I would love to see more Latin women that are true to themselves (i.e., most women of Hispanic background are very curvacious).  These cultures are pure-breeds as to where I am the mutt at the pound that nobody want to adopt because I do not have papers!!  Be yourself.  You may try to change the way you look but remember, God does not make mistakes but, doctors do!!!!!!!

03/26 "Change My Face, Change My Race"

I thought Brad was REALLY cute!!!  I really hope he doesn't change anything about his face cause it's perfect.  I loved how his smile lit up the room and I think his nose made him different than the boring, normal person.  I think he looked great just the way he was.

I HOPE YOU DON'T DO THE SURGERY BRAD!

Keep That Nose

I Just finished watching the show with the young Italian man with the "ehnic" nose.  Its a shame he is going to get it done, I can see if its for reasons of health, but just because he feels thats all people see.  So what if he got teased as a kid, who didn't about something, I was teased about my premature grey hair called "skunk boy" and old man when I was in my teens, but I never dyed it, I thought, hey, this is me too bad.  Has he not seen pictures of Roberto Bernini (SP?) the film director, and all  of the other wonderful Italian people (Caesar for one?)  Its a beautiful thing to pass on to your kids, even though it may not seem so at the time, we are what we endure, and if we can't endure something as insignificant as that, what will he become?  He looks like a great kid, if he could develop his sense of himself, the nose would disappear in his eyes, just give it time, because once its done, theres no going back, ask Michael Jackson.  Great show Dr. Phil, I love watching your program.

Big Nose Brad

Brad: I love your nose.  I have been accused of having a big nose as well, but would never change it.  My face is what makes me who I am.  I would feel fake altering the way I look.  Please reconsider.

To Today's Guests:

BRAD - You are cute, don't change your nose. Save your money and change your view of yourself. Soon you will be dealing with more mature people and they will see that there's a lot more to a person than the shape of their nose. Instead, develop your career and hobbies that make you an interesting person.

EYELID SURGERY - This is soooo unnecessary!  Ladies save your money. Just wear your hair cute and pretty clothes.

OBEY YOUR HUSBAND - A smart man leads with kindness and tenderness, not demands, bad attitude, and bad temper.  Women want to please a loving husband, not a demanding, demeaning one.

I think it's sad

Quote From: sherrykam

Will someone please explain how INDIVIDUAL plastic surgery is perceived by someone of the same race as an attack on the entire ethnic group?  No matter the ethnicity, HUMAN BEINGS, even as infants, prefer to look at a face that is symmetrical--it isn't a conscious decision.

I believe when the person is getting plastic surgery solely to change the ethnicity of the way they look in order to appear more like another culture says to that culture that they think something is wrong with the way that culture looks. So I can see why another culture would be disturbed by this. Personally, I feel sorry for the person who gets plastic surgery solely for this purpose because they don't love and accept themselves as beautiful. Well personally, I don't care if a person's face is symmetrical or asymmetrical as I'm not that shallow to perceive beauty in a typical fashion. I find people who have something different about their physical features more interesting to look at, as well as more interesting to photograph, sketch and paint , than people who are considered beautiful by typical standards of beauty.

Thankful

Hi Dr. Phil,

i found your show very interesting today. i undestand it was originally aired in 2007. However, I work during the day and tivo you so i can keep up ;)

I really appreciate you addressing this issue towards other races, especially with Asian Americans. i am 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 German, growing up in the midwest, in a predominately white area was also challenging. I felt like i never fit in with any other group than the asians, and i also felt that i never looked asian enough. While most Asians are trying to look more Western, I was trying to figure out why i didnt look like either side of my family. One never really does fit in. At 28, i bought a house 6 minutes from my parents, and am grateful for the challenges or opportunities that were set before me. Racism, prejudice will always be there. The grass is always greener.

But thank you Dr Phil for showing the Asian aspect on things! It also showed my boyfriend a few things he didnt know that i was internally battling and brought great conversation between us!

Sincerely

Stefanie

This is the 21st Century!!!

Quote From: wings4vr

O.k...I'm seriously infuriated. James needs a "personality overhaul".  Culture is one thing, but he sounds like a complete control freak who could possible escalate into severe violence. I would bet at some point he has probably already hit her. Dr. Phil, if that lady is smart, she'll take the walking papers. This is the United States of America. Everyone has equal oppotunity. Why on earthh would that woman want to be a prisoner in her own environment?

Unbelievable!  this is the 21st century and we still have men like James that think they can control their spouse and children.  I had a sister who married an Asian man, too. He controlled their life, their finances, the way the eat, drink, talk, talked down to my sister and more.  He thought he was the king and my sister was the servant that cooked, cleaned and took care of the kids.  He did not physically abuse her but he certainly mentally abused her.  Finally after 13 years (which was too long), she finally made the right decision - my sister divorced the "jerk"!!!  Now my sister, has her dignity back, lives life to the fullest, works, has skills, makes her own decision and is happier than ever.  Roseanna - leave him, he will not change - control freak will always be a control freak - just like drugs.  YOU will survive without James and you will be a better person than you can imagine.  It will be hard work but it is worth it!!! You do not need anyone to CONTROL YOU! You are beautiful, wonderful and smart woman.  This is not about the race it is about treating people with respect and dignity.  James is not a leader - he is a "loser"!!!  Move on Roseanna!!

All the best and may your life blossom someday soon :)

Change my face

Hi Dr. Phil

I watched your show today and I am very much for the young man that wants to have his nose changed. Why should he be any different than say someone that wants to have larger breasts or a face lift. It is his body and he should be able to do what he wants to it especially when it effects him the way it does. I say you go for it young man. More power to you. You will still be Italian and a good one at that I say.
