(Original Air Date: 09/20/07) Most everyone has thought about removing imperfections -- a nip here, a tuck there. But some people want plastic surgery to erase their ethnic identity! First up is James. He says he doesn’t want to change anything about himself because Asians are intellectually superior, and women should obey men. His wife, Roseanna, says he’s a controlling racist who demeans women, and she says she needs help before he corrupts their 11-year-old son. James says he’s ready to serve Roseanna her walking papers if she doesn’t become more obedient. Is James a controlling bigot or simply misunderstood? Then, Dr. Phil explores the pros and cons of eyelid surgery -- one of the most common cosmetic procedures for Asian women … and one of the most controversial! He talks to a woman who had a fold added to her upper eyelid, a plastic surgeon who performs these procedures and two guests who believe the surgery erases Asian heritage. Plus, Brad says he hates his nose, and he wants plastic surgery to look less Italian. His mother, Debbie, says she loves the way he looks -- big schnoz and all! Brad’s surgery is only a month away. Can Debbie convince him he's perfect just the way he is before he goes under the knife? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

NO SURGERY!!!!!!

I definitely believe people are getting too carried away with surgeries these days.  I, too, found myself, when I was younger, obsessed with my looks and wanted to get breast augmentation.  I went so far as to meet with a surgeon.  I never did it and am SOOOOOOO glad I didn't.    After children, while I was breastfeeding, my breasts grew so large, I realized how uncomfortable I was.  I couldn't find a comfortable position to sleep in and couldn't find "cute" bras at the store, only the ugly and boring type.  I was so glad to get back to my normal size I have never looked back.

I have since realized my body, and no one else's is perfect and have learned to put all that "thought-energy" I was wasting on how I looked into other people and making a difference in the world.  That is how I choose now to use this time in my head.

Also, my current boyfriend had an "ethnic" nose when he was younger.  He was always told how he looked like Al Pacino (who has a great honker!!!!).  He did have a nose job done and immediately regretted it.  He had someone who was considered the best in the business and "screwed" it up.  He had two more surgeries to fix it, but never got his same nose back.  Now 20 years later, appreciates better the nose he had been born with and wishes he had never had it done.

The lesson here I think is that our children are buying into thoughts and ideas that are not realistic, nor even really important or pertinent to their lives and are making a lot more out of how they look than who they are.  The young man today stated he wants people to pay attention to him not his nose, then HE needs to stop putting so much energy into thinking about his nose and what others are thinking and start paying more attention to what he actually wants to DO with his life and how HE WANTS to be perceived.  He has control over that, no one apparently has taught him.

The one quote that gets me through so many of my days:  YOU DON"T HAVE TO BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU THINK.

We only get 1 life

 Hello all-
I think each person should decide for themselves-with one exception--age.  Our bodies and faces change a lot just between being fifteen and being 25.  Unless someone needs plastic surgery for health reasons or reconstruction reasons--everyone should wait till 21 or better 25.  Other than that, it should be a personal decision---no one walks in our shoes.  I had breast reconstruction after breast cancer.  Should I have not gotten it because I was now a cancer patient?  To each his own.

Bradley

Go for it.  My parents never had my teeth straightened when I was a child.  When I was 21, I had it done.  My parents told me that God would punish me for doing it.  They don't live inside your body and dont understand what it means to you.  If you feel better about yourself, go for it.  God will love you whether you do the surgery so not!

James 1/2 a person

Okay James we know you are smart, now see if you can loosen up and develop the emotional side and maybe a personality would surface.  OMG---he would then be human and a great guy.
James, on your death bed would you rather have people say "I'll miss him, always remember him and he was a great guy." or "Too bad about James he was really intelligent."? Good luck to all.

Whats the dirrerence in getting a boob job or a tummy tuck and changing your face?
There IS no difference...it's all irrelevant to who we are.  Our bodies are merely a vehicle, we carry our true selves within.  How shallow are we that we care so much about the outer and so little of the inner.  If you THINK you're ugly, then you're UGLY, if you THINK you're beautiful, then you're beautiful.  If we can create a society with our thoughts first, then by our actions-- then surely we can create an inner sense of self-worth, first by our thoughts, then how we choose to express our lives in the world.  This is evident when you travel to other countries where there is not so much emphasis on physical appearance and more on character and results.  We obviously have too much time on our hands to be placing so much thought on our looks, we need to spend more time being productive members of society and helping others.

Go ahead, get the surgery

As long as the surgery is not going to harm the individual psychologically in a negative way; go ahead get the surgery.  You will not be changing your ethnicity or race, just your looks and self confidence.  You are only changing what your outer shell looks like not what is inside your soul. If you are a good person before the surgery, you will continue being good afterwards.  We must admit there are cruel people out there who will make fun of people's looks.  Do what makes you happy, it is your life and if your family and friends really love you they will not hold it against you.

Brad's surgery

The vast majority of elective cosmetic surgery is changing what is genetically inherited and since genetics are our heritage, then any of it rejects one's heritage and it would all be "racially controversial."   I don't have a problem with any one type verses another.  Beauty will always be influenced by the culture of the day.  As far as Brad is concerned-  and I hope he reads this-  Go for it- but try to get it done for free!  With your deviated septum, insurance covers such thing since it can cause breathing trouble!  Good luck.

James & Roseanna

It would surprise me if James ever "get's it".  He probably won't have to give Roseanna her "walking papers", because she'll probably take them herself.  No woman deserves to be treated like a child in her marriage.  James does not understand what a "partnership" marriage is & probably never will.   I think with James, it's all about James.

Brad....I think you should ignore your relatives & especially the "friend" you call "Aunt".....it's simply none of her business, or anyone's actually.  If you want to have your nose fixed, go for it.  My niece wanted to have her nose fixed when she was about 12 yrs old.  Of course, she had to wait till she was in her 20's, working & had her own money to have it done.  Her parents were upset with her, but they got over it quickly, especially when they say how happy she was with her new nose.  It really should not be such a big deal to your family.  They will get over it.
