(Original Air Date: 09/20/07) Most everyone has thought about removing imperfections -- a nip here, a tuck there. But some people want plastic surgery to erase their ethnic identity! First up is James. He says he doesn’t want to change anything about himself because Asians are intellectually superior, and women should obey men. His wife, Roseanna, says he’s a controlling racist who demeans women, and she says she needs help before he corrupts their 11-year-old son. James says he’s ready to serve Roseanna her walking papers if she doesn’t become more obedient. Is James a controlling bigot or simply misunderstood? Then, Dr. Phil explores the pros and cons of eyelid surgery -- one of the most common cosmetic procedures for Asian women … and one of the most controversial! He talks to a woman who had a fold added to her upper eyelid, a plastic surgeon who performs these procedures and two guests who believe the surgery erases Asian heritage. Plus, Brad says he hates his nose, and he wants plastic surgery to look less Italian. His mother, Debbie, says she loves the way he looks -- big schnoz and all! Brad’s surgery is only a month away. Can Debbie convince him he's perfect just the way he is before he goes under the knife? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Educated fool

Quote From: sherrykam

He really isn't very smart.  He has a beautiful wife who has tolerated him this long and doesn't even realize what he has.  He's so insecure he has to step on her to make himself feel superior.  Maybe watching himself on national T.V. will shake him out of the 1800's.
You are so right! He is really lucky to have her. He seems more like an educated fool to me. LOL.

Asian eye augmentation

I think Asian women are beautiful! I am a young caucasian woman with many Korean and Phillipino friends.  I think that they all are beautiful and should not change their image at all.  I know plenty of guys from all races that love Asian women.   I can also tell you they could not care less nor tell the difference if an Asian woman has a crease in her eyes or not!  I believe that the people who are setting these "fashion, beauty" examples are white women who are just full of themselves.  I have plenty of imperfections about me and I will not get plastic surgery.  I believe that Asian women are just so beautiful the way that God has made them and should be happy just the way that they are.

Fear

I'm watching James, he reminds me of so many fearful people who feel it necessary to dominate all around them in order to feel brave.  I think that until this fear is dealt with, nothing will change in his attitude towards others.  Get some real courage, and love without conditions!!!

03/26 "Change My Face, Change My Race"

Quote From: myerslk21

To this young man with the large nose

I had a large bumped, crooked on my face nose until I was 25 and it was the first thing I saw when I looked in the mirrow or saw myself in photos.  It was both hereditary and a genetic abnormality.  The "beak" part was present on all other members of my family.  The crooked part was because of abnormal bone growth on one side of my nose that pushed it in the opposite direction, so it actually entered my visual field.  My brothers teased me mercilessly.  Kids at school were cruel.  When the opportunity arose for it to be corrected, I jumped at the chance.  I had never been so happy with anything in my life...including the birth of my children!  It is the best thing I ever did for myself.  GO FOR IT!  YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Oh and I can breathe much better, for what ever reason, when I get a cold!  Go figure...smaller nose...breathe better.  hmmm

I can see why you would want a nose job since you had an abnormal bump on your nose and it is good you are now happy you did it and like the way you look. I think there is something wrong with people who get plastic surgery  for the sole reason of changing the way they look ethnically. It's an indication that they don't truly love and accept who they are.

Nose job

My husband "gave" our son his Italian nose.  We never knew how unhappy he was until we discovered, quite by accident, that at almost 30 years old he had scheduled himself for a nose job. When we asked him about it, he admitted how unhappy it made him, that he always felt that his nose was the only thing people saw when they first met him.  (Being tall and thin made it seem more pronounced to him also.)  He didn't want to tell us as he was afraid we'd be "hurt" that he would think about changing his ethnic nose.  We were very supportive of him and his decision.  His doctor told me going into surgery that "no one would know" as the change would be enough to make my son feel better about himself, but not enough that anyone could figure out what was "different".  He no longer hides from cameras or wears ball caps pulled over his face.  In face, he wore it backwards when he still had his bandage on!  His nose "fits" his face now and looks very good.  The self esteem boost he got was well worth it.  I wish we could afford to have our daughter's "tweeked"--she's wanted it done since she broke hers 30 years ago making it even more prominent.  Tell Brad to go for it and enjoy life!!  A new nose is definitely better than a broken spirit.

NOT TRUE

Quote From: harbour909

Dr. Phil - I totally agree with James as to intelligence of Asians.  Statistics show that this is true - and when I play Bridge on computer the Asian bridge players prove it to be true.  One thing that puzzles me is why James married other than an Asian!!  Maybe he thought he would be outsmarted.

As to Brad having cosmetic surgery to change shape of nose.  I am totally in favor of this being done.  When I was 70 I had a tummy tuck and have never been sorry.  And when I look at women my age and see their fat tummy I really feel good about myself.  I had to buy blouses that were too large in the shoulders so that there would be space enough in the hip area.  Also, now I can tuck my blouse in my skirt or pants if I want to.  So I say to Brad - GO FOR IT!  A side note is that even housekeeping would come and peek around the curtain at me and say "Hi" - probably wondering what this 70-year old vain woman looked like.

That really isn't true. The truth is that many Asian parents put a huge emphasis on education, and therefore, their children spend much more hours learning and studying that most non-Asians.

"Scholars have theorized that cultural emphasis on education plays a major role in explaining Asian-American students’ achievement. Asian parents often view education as the main vehicle for upward social mobility, such that academic success can even overcome some of the structural obstacles of being a marginalized minority in American society." Brad's Big Nose

There is nothing unattractive about Brads nose.  Ethnic features as well as imperfections are what make people unique.

I spent my entire youth trying to lose what people told me was an unintelligent sounding Trinidadian/Barbados accent.  I wish for the love of god that I still had that accent as it is now one of the most desirable features.  Unfortunately it only comes out when I am angry.

Brad should learn to love his looks.  I think he's a very attractive young man.

Nose Job

Hi I just want to say that I know what Brad is going through.  I am Italian and after I was hit by a car my nose had a bump on it.  I was made fun of and just hated my nose.  I got an opportnity to have plastic surgery and have my nose fixed.  I was glad that I did it and still feel better about myself to this day.  I am very proud of my race, and doing this had nothing to do with changing my race.  I am a proud Italian who thinks that if this is going to make you feel better about yourself than do it.

I am a Srilankan and a South Asian

I was born in a small tropical island that is near India(south part) and I am so proud of bieng born as a Srilankan because that is who I am and there is nothing no body can do to change it. I love my culture and heritage and the way i am brought up  with strong values and morals. Yeah I think it depends on each individual when they say that they want to change something about themselves. I believe that you shouldn't and i will respect the other person when they say that they want to change or not. The guy said that Asians are smarter well i think..well i think any one can be smart. But you see we all are individuals who are different and unique. We all need to be proud of that  and because we have that divinity in our pride of who we are and where we come from, that will make that individual  different from other people. Personally I wouldn't change anything about myself because even if people judge me by me by the way I look then they are wrong. I always have a saying, always judge yourself before judging other people
