Friday's debate over the Jena 6 grew so heated, the Dr. Phil show needed to keep the cameras rolling! Now, see the show that happened after the show, when Dr. Phil returns to the stage and speaks with audience members on both sides of the issue. White supremacist Richard Barrett is the first to demand the spotlight, and you won't want to miss Dr. Phil's laser-sharp response. Then Dr. Phil has some hard questions for the attorney of Mychal Bell, one of the Jena 6 who spent 10 months in prison. What does she say to accusations that money donated for her client's defense was being spent inappropriately by the families? And, the conversation grows heated over speculation about how hurt Justin Barker really was after the attack. Was he as injured as he and his parents claimed? Find out which guest storms out of the studio, and why. Plus, Dr. Phil sends Bishop T.D. Jakes to Jena for exclusive interviews with members of the Jena 6 and their families. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

10/01 Jena 6 Continues

Quote From: raynedaze1

They were the only ones who was portrayed victims . These criminals need be in prison. most of them have violent  pasts  should be treated as such. If you want equal rights, then when you do the crime it should be equal punishment.  It was a racially motivated attack & that constitutes a hate crime. 6 boys on 1 IS ATTEMPTED MURDER. You can not expect to change the rules to suit  your own personell needs. You need to get our facts strait, before you preach!
You speak of equal punishment, but I noticed that you didn't say anything about charging the white people who beat up Mr. Bailey with attempted murder.  What happened to the equal punishment, or does that mean that you charge (or rather OVERcharge) all black people equally? I have not heard anyone say that it is right for six people to beat up one person.  Even if all of the Jena6 were to be released and all charges dropped, they each would have served more time than any of the people who beat up Mr. Bailey a few days before Mr. Barker was beaten. You mention that all of the six defendants have violent pasts.  Is this statement based on some concrete evidence, or are you repeating what Mrs. Barker said on the show.  Also, these previous "incidents", are they convictions or just charges?  One of the previous "violent incidents" from their past was when they were charged with theft of a firearm for taking away a shotgun from someone who pulled the shotgun on them.

Poor Guidance

I hope that people can see the obvious truth on why violence is occurring in Jena. It is because of the leaders in the community's lack of education and guidance. They are such a poor example to the children in their society. When those students hung nooses from the trees the educators should have stepped in and suspended the students responsible, so that all students would feel safe knowing that hateful actions would NOT BE TOLERATED at that school or anywhere else in their community. To call that occurence a "prank" is ignorant and irresponsible. It should have been treated as the serious issue that it was, because when our children feel like the adults in their own community are making them feel segregrated and that's just the way it is, then they will feel compelled to take matters into their own hands. Unfortunately, that is why these violent crimes will occur. That is why it is so important for the leaders and educators in this community  to step up and let those children know that they are safe and that everyone is to be accepted.

Jena 6 bottom line

I watched the show and frankly was a little disturbed by the reactions of the majority of the comments.  What I heard was "sorry I got caught" "not sorry it happened."  You can anlyze over and over but if a person doesn't speak with the heart instead of the mouth it will never change.  I didn't see any one have a heartfelt regret for what was happening.

I would have been nice to hear someone say, "This isn't who I am!"  Violence is NOT the answer.  I found it interesting that the mother of the young man who got beat up always made a statement that included a "but".  There is not excuse for violent behavior and yet people need to own who they are from the inside out.  Stop making excuses and change who you are.  As a parent every word that comes out of you mouth is being absorbed you your child.  Youth may be willing to change but are intimidated by the peer pressure of their own parents.

TAKE A DEEP LOOK AT WHO YOU ARE AT THE MOST SECRET PERSON AND THAT IS THE PERSON OF THE HEART!  Decide if that person is Good or Bad.

You cannot change others if  you cannot admit who you are and change what you don't like about you!

I agree with almost everything you have said but I do not understand why you say that a fight at school should not be a cause for criminal charges. I am sure any school system in the nation does not abide by such a rule. NO ONE should have the right to lay hands on someone else. I do believe criminal charges should occur but that these charges are excessive.

What is the saddest part of all is no adult stood up and put an end to this madness before it escalated to such a degree. I am sure everyone in this town could see what was happening if they would have bothered to open their eyes. Those kids who put up the nooses should be charged with a hate crime as well.

What people fail to recognize is that when things like this occur the whole country suffers, not just one little town. Haven't we been divided long enough?

Kids EVERYDAY are taunted. No matter the  skin color, Its how you deal w/it.  rather its for developmental diabilities, bieng gay or just diffrent. That still dosent give ANYONE the right to commit a vioent assault on ANYONE

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

I believe that everyone involved in the Jena 6 is missing an opportunity to teach their youth to be peaceful, of good character, forgiving and an all round decent human being.  They are more concerned with  getting even, punishing someone else, getting an eye for an eye and and downright revenge. I doubt that these kids learned any of these positive things so far from their parents or else they wouldn't have thought the right thing was to was to get together six young men to attack one young man. What is righteous about that? Does it make them some kind of  "macho" men?  I think it's pretty cowardly, actually.  It also goes for the whites who might do the same thing or who put up the nooses. That was a cowardly thing to do and was meant to hurt and antagonize. I doubt that you can throw someone in jail for that offense but they should have been  properly reprimanded and made to do community service or something else to serve the very people they meant to hurt.  Assault and battery, on the other had, is punishable by jail time.  Never lay your hands on another human being in anger. Learn that early in life and you've made a step in the right direction.  There is a program for small children called "Hands Are Not For Hurting".  I suggest everyone who has small impressionable children teach them this principle.  Apparently, these young men have never been subjected to that kind of upbringing.  I am somewhat shocked at the attitude of some of the pastors involved in this, also. They are supposed to be the spreaders of  The Golden Rule, The Commandments, peace and harmony  and God's love and yet I hear in their voices a wish for some kind of payback, too.  It's never too late to learn and I hope everyone learns from this experience.  I pray for peace between these young men and that they can be friends and see each other as they see themselves, human beings created by God who deserve love and respect.  It's not too late to hold the white kids accountable for what they did and so where are the people responsible for handling this situation?

Jena 6

In discussing the Jena 6 issue it is apparent that Racism exist in this country.  It is apparent that ignorants exist within all people - black, white, red, etc.  - - this fact exist imany of the messages posted on this board.

The problem with this whole situation started in a school system  - that when a question about whether black kids could sit under a tree designated for white students was asked -  the school principal and staff and support staff should have immediately  realized that a problem existed -  I grew up in a small community in Louisiana - the same size as Jena and although the student body had a tendency to separate along racial lines, gender, athletes, studious,  etc. -  however on any give day -students were free to hangout wherever - the question would have never came up - so it is clear that a problem existed in that school - one that needs to be addressed.

As for the hanging of the noose - this was clearly a warning to the black students and the school district should have realized that a problem existed on the lines of race relations.

As for the justice system within Jena - The young man with the gun should have been charged with carrying fire arm or with whatever crime he had committed.   If he was a juvenile it should have been placed with the juvenile court system.  As for the 6 young men fighting with Justin Baker if they were juveniles the charges should have also been placed with the juvenile court system.  This should have been the end of the story - however here we are know with the eyes of the nation and the world on this little town.

It is hard for many people to recognize that in many situations around this country we have two different justice systems.  We have one system for the rich and one for the poor, a system for elected officials and a system for john-q-public, a system for white, red, black, etc., the list can go on and on.   This is the issue that we as American Citizens should be addressing instead of sprewing hatred.

As I mentioned earlier I live in Louisiana - I was born here - and I love living here -  I am a black female currently residing in a community four hours away from Jena.  I have been employed by the same company for 24 years and I hold both an undergraduate's degree and a master's degree. Hence - I pay taxes and lead a very productive life - like so many  other Americans in this country.

It is a disgrace when other citizens 'lump" all people in one category - it is shameful and goes against everything our democracy stands for.  Take a step back and look at the whole picture instead of  passing on hate.

10/01 Jena 6 Continues

Quote From: tracysimpson

Yes, I just posted "Ashamed to be white".......I truly feel that way when other people who are of the same color skin as I am act in such a deplorable way! I have never and will never support any kind of discrimination of race, color, creed or religion. We are ALL created in God's image. I know, some of you donot believe in God; however, with every fiber of my being it makes me sick to think that the young man from Jena is getting the brunt of the prejidice and ignorance in the court system and the media is having a field day, aren't they? It literally makes me sick to my stomach to think that JUST because he (or anybody else for that matter) is of a different color, he is being treated so poorly! SICKENING! I will probably never see the day that people ARE treated with dignitiy, fairness, respect, regardless of their race, color, religion or socio economic status..........................well, until I get to Heaven! I sincerely pray for the ignorance that prejedice people spew out of their mouths and is shown in their toxic actions/behavior. Written by ME.......A human being that honestly despises being associated with anybody that is sooooooo ignorant.......REGARDLESS of what color they are!

I AM NOT ASHAMED OF BEING WHITE, NO MORE TAN A PERSON SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF BEING BLACK OR ASIAN. SHOULD AN ASIAN BORN TODAY BE ASHAMED OF BEING ASAIN BECAUSE JAPAN ATTACKED PEARL HARBOR. I TREAT PEOPLE WITH THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE NO MATTER WHAT COLOR. i SAY HELLO TO ANYONE I MEET AND WAS RASIED WITH MANNERS. bUT, BY THE SAME TOKEN I DON'T OWE YOU OR ANYONE OF ANY COLOR ANYTHING. WE CAN ALL GET ALONG BUT WHEN MY CHILD COMES HOME BEATTEN BY THREE YOUNG BLACK BOYS THAT IS OK BUT WHEN DEFENDS HIM SELF IT WAS BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK. YOU DON'T GET A FREE PASS IN LIFE FOR BEING OF COLOR. IF A WHITE PERSON DISLIKES A BLACK PERSON HE IS A RACIST. IF ABLACK PERSON DISLIKES AWHITE PERSON IT IS BECAUSE THE WHITE PERSON IS A RACIST.  nO WAY TO WIN, SO YOU GO AHEAD AND DISLIKE YOUR RACE WHETHER OR NOT I AM BLACK OR WHITE IT DOESN'T MAKE ME ANY LESS OF A PERSON AND I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF MY RACE. lIKE IN ANY RACE THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE IGNORANT BUT THEY ARE IN A CLASSS BY THEMSELVES(BLACK AND WHITE)

10/01 Jena 6 Continues

Quote From: catfish0229

Here is a link of what happens to whites on a regular basis. This just happened the end of september 2007 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n95QmGyI6wA This is why whites move away from blacks. How much money do blacks owe whites for the white flight out of the cities becauese of black crime. I live in a large city and see young white teens assualted all the time by gangs of black men or black teens that look like men all the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n95QmGyI6wA
I watched the video and personally, I wonder why the person was recording a video rather than trying to help the boy.  The newsman who is "reporting" the video claims there are sounds of people egging on the attackers, why isn't there a sound of the person taking the video calling on the people to stop?  Things like that continue to happen and whether it be black on white, white on back, black on black or white on white, people need to stop standing by and watching or recording it and put an end to it or at least make an attempt.

What was the punishment for the nooses

I'm just wondering what was the punishment for the nooses and why is it a secrect? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I'm a native Californian and if that disgusting noose thing happened in a school out where I'm from their punishment  would have been public and a public assembly to talk about it would have been held among other things. The whole idea of a secret punisment smacks of racisim.  That school is a mess if that's how it was handled and where are the parents in all of this.  If the school would have handled the situation better the beating might not have happened that being said I think the boys involved should be punished but  the charge needs to be  assalt and battery not murder. Why was this allowed to get so out of control in the school to begin with? I know schools have cliques but nooses that is racisim  not matter what way you slice the pie. I now live in VA and I notice a huge difference in race relations out this way  it is very different My oldest is dating a  amazing young man who is of Japanese and African decent the comments and looks people make when we go out to dinner are just  so ignorant it blows me away they come from both whites and blacks racism is  equal oportunity out here it is a very sad thing to see.
