Dr. Phil takes a look at the unthinkable: making your own child sick to fulfill a disturbing need to get medicine, sympathy and attention. The idea might sound unimaginable, but for people with a psychological disorder called Munchausen by Proxy, it’s irresistible. First, see disturbing footage of parents caught on tape actually causing harm to their children. Then, Dr. Phil looks into the mind of one woman, Tracy, convicted of trying to harm her youngest daughter by constantly keeping her sick. Hear from Tracy's oldest daughter, Heather, who survived years of her mother’s abuse. She says her mom forced her into a wheelchair unnecessarily, took her to almost 400 medical visits, and caused her to spend over 100 days of her life in hospital beds -- needlessly. Most disturbing of all is the secret Heather revealed to police about what her mother buried in their back yard. When Dr. Phil makes a phone call to Tracy in prison, will she acknowledge the problem with her parenting? And could she be preparing to have another child? Hear Dr. Phil’s strong words for this Munchausen mom. Plus, how are Tracy’s children doing now that she is out of their lives? Note: Viewer discretion is advised. Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

How did this sick disorder get its name?

Dr. Phil mentioned a documentary coming out called "Momma".  Does anyone have know when, where, what time???

As for this sick topic I would offer the following.  We now live in such a "SUIT Happy" sick society where the first thought that comes to mind, is LAWSUIT.  I can see where doctors or anyone for that matter would not be willing to make their suspicions of the alleged abuse known.  On the flip side, I am fighting to get an unknown medical condition under control.  I actually literally wondered, could I be Muncy.

As for poor little Heather, bingo, the child needs help right now.  It was obvious that she was very touched by the circumstances and well deserves free mental help immedeiately.  I am sure that she will never get over it, just learn to live with it.  Detective Rose said at the end of the show, this was the first time that Heather confided that the baby was born alive and she held her in her arms.  Oh my goodness what a nightmare for that child.

Does Momma deserve a hysterectomy???  Nope, give her the death penalty for the death of this child.  Statute of Limitations is forever on murder, but help Heather first and foremost.

I feel better now

What?

Quote From: tiffany_2007

I agree that she shouldn't have any more children but the courts cant step in like that, thats the same in saying court has the right to tell someone to have a abortion or forced to have a child.
I agree the courts should have no RIGHT in telling a mother to terminate her pregnancy but once that child is born who is going to protect that child? No mother has the RIGHT to harm her child intentially. Too many people are looking at the "human rights" well, the children have rights too and if their own mother is the most to danger to them,  than that woman should not be able to bear children any more!!!  Think of all of those babies out there that would be spared!

Concerned Teacher

I am a kindergarten teacher and I have a student in my class whose father has expressed to me that the mother has Munchhausen By Proxy.  Last year the student missed 3/4 of the year with mysterious illnesses and has already missed 15 days out of 39. I watched the show and cried today. I worried about this student everyday. He never complains of being sick at school, but then the mother keeps him home from school for days. I worry that legally there is nothing I can do without proof that he is being abused. Our Student Support Specialist has already done a home visit and we both worry about him. What can I do?

Ideas

Quote From: jdillner

I saw a program a while back on the man who supposedly "discovered" SIDS in a particular family.  He made a whole career out of his supposed discovery of SIDS.  Eventually it was proven that the mother in the family had killed all the children that supposedly died of SIDS.  Who knows how many SIDS deaths are actually Munchausen deaths undiscovered.

There was a network program on this topic a while back, and they had videotape of one of these women who brought clear saran wrap into a hospital room where her baby was, and she smothered the child with the saran wrap.  Totally undetectable, no trama to the child!

I hope you didn't give any sick person out there an idea on how to hurt their child with the mention of the saran wrap. I'm sure the show did too. To the dr.,  I'd  like to know if there is such a thing as munchausen dads.

Why did she say it on National TV

Quote From: shmigelz

I have a seriously hard time believing that Heather would come on National TV and say that after her mom dig the grave and placed the 'dead baby' in there and it was wrapped in plastic and a blanket and then covered with dirt, one can only assume that the baby or anyone for that matter would run out of oxygen and die almost immediately? So for Heather to say, after the fact that she then dug up the grave and the baby was alive still? but then as if by perfect timing died in her hands??? No offence but I dont buy that story for 1 second. Too many variables, unanswered questions, and not enough questions asked even by Dr. Phil.. Like how long after the baby was initally put in the grave, did Heather come and dig it up? How did Heather know the baby was alive and then how did she know it died in her arms? Time frames? and how does Heather know the intricate details of a babies breathing, etc???

Sorry but yes it is a very serious and sad story overall but this aspect I dont believe is true at all.

Who cares why she said it.  We all heard them say she was a young child.  Regression and for once in her young dominated and tomented life she is surrounded by people who care and most importantly she TRUSTS.  Hopefully in her own time she will say more!!!  Rock on Heather

Where are the fathers???

Quote From: mr_mrc

I am a father of a child that was abused by his mother with MSBP...In doing my research into MSBP the father is there but in most situations they let the mother take care of the childrens well being...as the father is involved in the day to day activities of work and home jobs.

My child is safe and with me now...MSBP is very hard to prove...when we were trying to prove the MSBP in my case everyone was siding with the mother right down to the Dr.'s until we confronted her in front of the doctors.  But finding a court that will do anything about it is a different story.  She was charged with 16 charges in total and it got pleaded down to two charges...she was supposed to do 6 months in the work house and 3 years probation.  Well once the child was removed from her she started having "Symptoms" couldn't do the 6 months.

My husband works nights, sleeps in the day. Sometimes he is only able to see us for four hours a day. So if the husband is not around alot when thats happening, they probably don't realize it. And I think it would be really hard to believe that your spouse is hurting your children. But I am kind of confused why they didn't say anything about this father. One of the things I find wierd, is her being pregnant.... and the husband not realizing it. Either they had the worst sex life.. or hes just an idiot. That poor little baby..that she buried. Ugh, I don't understand how these people can have these babies and hurt them.   Also I wanted to comment about when the girl had found the baby, and she buried it back. I think she was too young to realize what she was sopposed to do with it.

Missing 15 days out of 39 days. You should be able to report that, just the fact that kids are sopposed to be in school. You should keep a list of the "mysterious illnesses" and the days he misses, and how he looks at school, Like if he looks sick or whatever. And if it continues, call the abuse hotline. As a teacher you are are sopposed to report if you suspect anything.
