Dr. Phil takes a look at the unthinkable: making your own child sick to fulfill a disturbing need to get medicine, sympathy and attention. The idea might sound unimaginable, but for people with a psychological disorder called Munchausen by Proxy, it’s irresistible. First, see disturbing footage of parents caught on tape actually causing harm to their children. Then, Dr. Phil looks into the mind of one woman, Tracy, convicted of trying to harm her youngest daughter by constantly keeping her sick. Hear from Tracy's oldest daughter, Heather, who survived years of her mother’s abuse. She says her mom forced her into a wheelchair unnecessarily, took her to almost 400 medical visits, and caused her to spend over 100 days of her life in hospital beds -- needlessly. Most disturbing of all is the secret Heather revealed to police about what her mother buried in their back yard. When Dr. Phil makes a phone call to Tracy in prison, will she acknowledge the problem with her parenting? And could she be preparing to have another child? Hear Dr. Phil’s strong words for this Munchausen mom. Plus, how are Tracy’s children doing now that she is out of their lives? Note: Viewer discretion is advised. Join the discussion.

10/11 Munchausen Mom

I can personaly say I have never heard of this diease before this show.  Hows come it takes so long for a dr. to know that something is not right with the situation i mean 400 visits and noone suspected anything. This lady should not be aloud to have any more children EVER. I couldnt think about doing any of that stuff to my kids let alone barry them alive. This mother should have a stiffer punishment along with any one else whos doing this to their kids. Their are alot of good peolpe in the world who cant have children and for someone to have kids and do that is just awful. Not everyone is meant to be a parent. I have to friends who lost not one but two babies and it just makes me sick to know there are people in the world who would harm thier baby for attention. Its sick its wrong and someone should put a stop to the crazyness in the world. Dont drs. care enough about their patients to do anything. I hope Heather gets past what her mother did to her and all the trama she put her through. Heather is a very pretty young lady and hopefully she will go on to protect the innocent children in the world who have to go through their parents wierd ness

Pam and Heather

Dr. Phil, I was really glad to hear you offer Pam any assistance she needed in helping Heather. At first I thought you were going to make the statement Pam made about wondering if she was doing the same thing that Tracy did into a big accusatory thing. I'm wondering if maybe Pam just didn't phrase it correctly. Could it be that Pam is overwhelmed with Heather's needs and is questioning herself as to why she really took this on? I have no doubt that Pam has a huge loving heart and that's why she opened it  to Heather and took her away from that horror. She is to be commended and held in high regard for it. I would hate to think she is questioning her own motives because of  periodic  negative feelings in dealing with the difficulties of living with an adult teenager. I have been a provider with The Department Of Children and families and I had a client a lot like Heather. I witnessed first hand how difficult it can be and how overwhelming it can be to the families. She needs a lot of support and help from people that are trained to meet Heather's needs. Living in a household with any teenager is difficult at times. A lot of us have  shaken our heads and said to ourselves, ( Why did I choose to have children again!?) We reassure ourselves that this will pass , they will grow up. They will once again be selfless people that admit they don't know everything!. Can you imagine how it would feel to not be sure you can say that? What if you all you can see is you dealing with a teenager never fully being able to take care of themselves for the rest of your life? I can see where Pam could be asking herself why was she doing this. She needs to know there are people out there that are committed to helping people like Heather become a contributing member of her community. Their goal is to help Heather live a happy, independent, life.  Pam needs reassurance that her motives are from the heart and she deserves the praises she receives. She should not feel guilty for occasionally resenting the difficulties she deals with. I would even go one step further and say if she ever truly feels this is more than she can or is willing to handle, she should not feel bad about admitting it. She took a child out of a horribly abusive situation and showed her love and compassion. She did it because she is a loving person not because she wanted the attention. Heather is old enough to be able to live in an assisted living situation, group home, apartment with twenty four hour supports, etc. all the while continuing to receive the counseling and training she needs. Most  importantly she can continue to be a part of  Pam's family. Pam could continue to take pride while watching Heather develop into a wonderful adult!

Life isn't Fair

How can a mother do this?!?!? It's just so hard to believe. When the little girl came out at the end of the show and saw her dad and did a BIG smile, my heart dropped.  She is sooooooo beautiful. My husband and I are trying to have kids and are having a hard time but people who abuse kids can have them like nothing. I don't understand!!! This kind of stuff just makes my blood boil.

where are the dads?....

Quote From: coreeeen

My big question...where are the dad's?  I can understand if Tracy was a single mom, but she was able to get pregnant over and over again (must not be too single).  Where were they when the kids were being hurt?
You don't need to keep the man if you don't keep the baby. It only takes a few moments to make a baby, her illness is attention if being pregnant didn't do it for that man to give her what she wanted she got ride of it in one way or another then moved on to the next man. Heather lived I believe because she had family that was looking out for her and as pointed out by her aunt on this message board they tried to report the abuse but nobody would listen to them.

Thank you from the family members

Quote From: thelittles

To the family members who are posting here...

My most heartfelt prayers are with you all.  I bawled through the enitire show.  Heather will surely need psychological help getting through having found her baby sister buried alive, and holding her while she passed away.  She, through all this hatred, seems like a most loving person!  Hopefully, the others are young enough to be spared any horrible memories of this.  I think it is so wonderful that you guys have taken in the children as your own!  It takes an angel to do God's work!  Though you may tire, please remain vigilant to protect any children she may have in the future, including her current pregnancy and any to follow!

Please let Heather know that she has a friend out here in the great unknown who fell in love with her spirit instantly!  She has a long road ahead of her, but she is obviously strong, and she can do it!

My best to you all!

Yes Heather will need psychological help,  although Elizabeth was taken at 15 months she has suffered a lot and is still trying to survive the mental and physical damage done. I feel so bad that it was so long that Heather went through the most horrifying life expected. We still work every day with Elizabeth, no she might not remeber exactly what happened or her birth mother but she has mental delay, physical delay, and is emotional displaced because of what her birth mother did to her. Her brother is 12 months younger and has passed her milestones all over the charts. But she is 100% better then she was when we got her. It will take time, love, security, and she has all of that. Thank you for your kind words I hope that if this show helps anyone then it was worth it.

Ok so if the lady admitted to burying her baby in the backyard... why didn't the sicko get charged for it? This lady should not even be released from prison let alone have more children what is wrong with the world today i mean if people can go to prison for molesting children why not get released for killen em huh? this world is sick no wonder there is so much crime in this world people get away with too much once you molest, abuse, kill, a child or anyone else for that matter that should be life in prison they don't deserve anything but that!

im wondering if i missed something during thisbroadcast. the older daughter seems to have a learning or developmental difficulty. was that discussed? was it related to chemical ingestion or repeated oxygen deprivation? what a hard childhood shes been through.
You know I thought the same thing. But they didn't go into at all. I can believe that beating and making a child stop breathing, plus always vomitting would cause mental defects in someone so young. I know when I have bad asthma attack I cant for the life of me think striaght. I use to forget were I was when I was a child, my mom would wake me up and have like a list of questions to make sure I was okay and a few times I didn't answer them correctly thats usually when my mom would take me to the doctors or the ER. I was a sick child, I honestly don't understand how some mothers can be okay with forcing there child to be sick. I remember my mother praying and crying and always giving me the trial test drugs of asthma drugs some would make me vomit, weak, usually never helped with the asthma (lucky my mom only did this for 2 years and finally stopped) and just gave me caffine and lots of fresh air. Its not easy I fear everyday my son might have asthma and I don't want to go through what my mother went through and I don't want my son to know what real pain is. This makes me cry cause there is no reason for them. These parents should take joy in having healthy kids that they can run around with play sports with, and not be stuck in a hospital every day. Sorry I went on I think I have done this many times here I just get so emotional over this as I'm sure you all do, very sad.

The reason she isn't being charged is they cant prove that the baby was alive, she said it was still born which then isn't murder even if she never took it in (I know how messed up). I think all stillborns need to be taking to the hospital and looked over, and if they don't bring them in then charge them with murder.

I agree that she shouldn't have any more children but the courts cant step in like that, thats the same in saying court has the right to tell someone to have a abortion or forced to have a child.
As a mother of a toddler little girl, I cannot imagine how parents can do the slightest bit of harm to their children!!  It would have been reasonable if the courts ordered Tracy to have her tubes tied!!  Thank you to everyone for saving Elizabeth, she's a beautiful little angel!!!!!

10/11 Munchausen Mom

Seeing this show absolutely made me sick to my stomach, I cried for hours, and couldn't eat the rest of the day.  I have two beautiful little boys and couldn't ever imagine causing them harm.  It broke my heart to see how those disgustingly sick mothers could actually lay over their children, smoothing them, just to get attention, it is absolutely sick, and I feel so bad for those children who are so defenseless and can't get help!!!   My question is, Dr. Phil showed those videos but didn't expand to tell us if those women were ever convicted for what they were doing?  It was caught on tape so there for I would like to believe that the children were taken from the mothers and placed where they would be safe and the mothers would be put away!!!  After seeing this I wish there were video cameras in all hospital rooms to caught these sick mothers harming their children!!!  I am outraged, sickened, and hurt that this is going on and innocent children are being harmed or killed everyday at the hands of the women who are suppost to care, nuture and love them, it is truely heartbreaking, I wish I could just scoop those kids up in my arms and keep them safe.
