Celebrities like Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie are known for wearing skimpy clothes, but does that mean midriffs and micro-minis are right for your daughter? A new debate is brewing over whether women should go mild or wild. First up, Brenda Sharman, the national director of Pure Fashion, believes young ladies should dress modestly. She faces off with four women from the audience who say there’s nothing wrong with showing a little skin. What does Dr. Phil think? Then, Terri says her 8-year-old daughter has never had a Bratz doll and never will, but Melissa has no problem with her 6-year-old twins playing with the provocative pre-teens of plastic. Are Bratz just harmless toys or a negative influence? Plus, Lilly says her 19-year-old daughter, Cassie, dresses like a slut and a hooker, and even walks the dog in high heels! What can Lilly do to get Cassie to cover up, or should she? And, meet an 11-year-old who says her parents are too old-fashioned when it comes to her clothes, and they just need to get with the times. Share your thoughts here.

11/23 Mild vs. Wild

I work on the Las Vegas Strip on a nightly basis.  On any given night I see dozens of women, young and old, conventionally attractive and not, wearing less than our local prostitutes.  They complain about being cold in the casinos year round but refuse to bring a jacket to cover up.  The thing that kills me is how many of them act surprised or angry at the attention (usually obnoxious, often disrespectful) that they draw from the men around them.  Why pretend that you don't want to be noticed when it's clear that you do?  I just don't understand what's wrong with dressing in a way that's sexy without being sleazy?  How can you tell the difference?  If you're being propositioned to perform in sex videos or asked how much you'll take for an hour, you're sleazy.  It's not that difficult ladies.

Yes!!

Quote From: sloneii

I just watched this episode from last week, and I couldn't help but laugh. These Bratz dolls are no big deal. My daughter has gotten quite a few Bratz dolls over the years. She is now 10 1/2, and you know what happened to the dolls? They are in a plastic container collecting dust! The negative influences on my daughter's life are lying in containers with their hair all matted from hours of brushing and styling, half naked because something else caught her attention before she fully dressed it,  and amputated because she never had two shoes that matched. They look just like my Barbies did when I was her age. She doesn't dress like a Bratz doll, or wear makeup like a Bratz doll. She acutally could care less.
This is so true! They are just like all other toys, one day the kids love them the next day they forget they even have them.

Part of crowd?

Quote From: ramair

So, people are buying Bratz dolls like crazy? Why be part of the crowd? A time may come when you don't want your twins to be a part of the crowd. Kudos to those mothers who stand out from the crowd and don't buy Bratz dolls.
You obviously don't know me! I am far from doing things to be part of the crowd! I do what I feel is right and the bratz are awesome toys. Did you know that Hollywood endorses them? They have them backstage at the Grammys & emmys? They endorse toys for tots! They do alot more than any other toys to help others. Again as Dr Phil said "they send sound positive messages" I was there and heard every word you should of taped it and you could rewind to hear it again and again!

*blinking* Umm...how old are you? Seriously? Am I reading this correctly and understanding that you are using the fact that Hollywood of all places is your standard of measure for whether something is acceptable or not? Hollywood endorses whatever will make a buck..or a statement...Man...with that kind of logic, there isn't much that is off limits!

And am I mistaken here or wasn't what you quoted Dr. Phil as saying in direct reference to the cartoon show of Bratz and not of the dolls themselves? Ahem. I hardly think his reaction to their clothing (remember the doll to real life fashion show) could be mistaken for approval!

And didja know that lots of companies and organizations 'endorse' things ....and they sponsor them cuz it's a tax write off.

If the suit fits....

Quote From: invincible88

im nineteen years old and i can proudly say that i am a modest, yet very fashionable young person. i never show off huge amounts of clevage or midrift or leg. i can attest to the fact that you can look "sexy" without showing everything you have. everybody wants to harp about people being superficial and calling them "whores" or "sluts" if they dress in a manor reflecting so. they say people are just being judgemental and "jealous", but i couldnt disagree more. as human nature, we automatically judge each and every situation we are put in. if you pass a dark alley, you will use JUDGEMENT and say "hey, that dark alley is probably not safe". if one were to see a large, deep hole in the middle of the road, JUDGEMENT tells you that you better drive around it or else you could total your car and risk your life. but if we wanted to get more technical about it, if you see a person walking down the road with dark eyeliner, black clothing, tattoos and fifty piercings, one automatically JUDGES that the person is either gothinc or satanic. now whether that is true or not is impossible to know unless you got to know the person, but we JUDGE each and every day, and whether we like to admit it or not, we JUDGE people before we even know them based on how they dress or carry themselves.

it would be like having a man dressed in a cop uniform, walking down the street, and when a person approached him for help, he would scream "I AM NOT A COP, I JUST DRESS THIS WAY BECAUSE ITS COMFORTABLE AND FASHIONABLE!!! HOW DARE YOU JUDGE ME LIKE THAT AND ASSUME I AM A COP!!!" ridiculous, right? well its just the same as a girl dressing like a prostitute and when some guy (or catty girl) approaches them and makes the comment that they are a slut, the girl responds "I AM NOT A SLUT, I JUST DRESS THIS WAY BECUASE ITS COMFORTABLE AND FASHIONABLE!!! HOW DARE YOU JUDGE ME LIKE THAT AND ASSUME I AM A SLUT!!!

see the resemblence? the point is, we all judge whether we like it or not, and you and only you can decide how you will portray yourself and how people will judge/read you.

That's the thing: go on with your bad self and wear whatever you want but don't be shocked and offended when someone labels you.  You may not be a slut but you're wearing a slut suit!!!!

Hand in Hand

Quote From: minnieb

I believe blaming Bratz dolls for how parents let their children dress is asinine.  When I was a little one parents blamed Barbie for giving girls poor body images.  Despite all the evils of Barbie I turned into a respectful adult.  That's why I'm not too worried about my 7 year old playing with her Bratz dolls.  She, my daughter, does call the scantily clad dolls "hoochies" and in turn now she is running all over  telling other girls they need to put clothes on, or out and out calls them hoochies.  I just get looks, what would you say to a 7 year old telling you you're dressed like a hooch?  Why do I still buy my baby girl Bratz dolls?  They do spark creativity.  She can go online with one of them and gets to design clothes, hair and makeup.  Then you have the video game where she can make her own magazine.

IF we want to point fingers as a community about "who is responsible"...well besides the parents...look at Limited Too, they cross the line on outfits targeted at children as young as 6.  We really have to be picky with Gwyn there.  Then you have Juicy.   Seriously...I don't even want to turn my bottom into a billboard and I'm an adult in shape!  Instead of the focus being on toys, Dr Phil needs to focus on the fashion industry because that's who beating the parents at the game.

True...but they all go hand in hand.  If the kids don't SEE the crap they don't WANT the crap. No one thing is to blame...it's an inundation of things that start when they are very young with things LIKE the dolls.  The dolls spawn the clothing line, the movies and the following.....consumers spur the rate at which they are made.

I should have taped it?! FYI, I did! On DVD!  As well as watch it. "live" and close-captioned, on another TV. I'll be transeferring it, without commercials, onto VHS and dubbing it back onto DVD. So, I'll have plenty of time to reveiw what Dr Phil really said about Bratz dolls. Including the reseach he cited. And, his comment about the Bratz vidoes sending out positive messages. A comment I think he made to break the stalemate and move on to another subject.
And, you think I'd  that  a Hollywood endorsement would impress me? Bratz, and hundreds of other toys, promote Hollywood movies. At one time, the movie came first. And, the toys followed. Remember Buzz Lightyear? And, the three-headed sheep? Now, the toys  precede the movies. Even in fast food kids' meals. So, the movies will rake in more money.
Hollywood doesn't produce just kids' movies. How much of their other movies would you find fit  for your twins to watch? And, wouldn't you hate for your twins to live the Hollywood life-style?

Dr Phil was referring to the show, definitely not the dolls. But, apparently his guest only heard what she wanted to. I've got recorded this show on DVD. I can watch it, close captioned on another TV. And, write down everything that was said. I suggest that this viewer take her own advice. If, she recorded the show. And, watch it about five times herself.

Why don't you watch the end of the show closed caption and all, about 5 times and tell me what he has to say about me? How he and the producers "Extensively" talked with me about my parenting morals and how he knows I am teaching them right! How come you didn't write about that? If you are that interested in what I have to say or what he has to say then go for it.  I have way better things to do with my time then sit and watch the show over & over! I check the message board daily and like to correct incorrect information like yours. Is all I know is that I was there and know what he said, I said, how his tone was, etc.  He couldn't say enough about my kids cuteness and how I am raising them right but apparently you only heard what you wanted to!

Seriously you need to get a hobby or something! Sounds like you have way too much time on your hands if you have "plenty of time" to review what Dr Phil says! Who cares! Why in the world would you waste all that time reviewing it, recording it on VHS then dubbing it on to a DVD if you all ready watched it live? I am glad you enjoyed the show so much but gosh it wasn't that good to keep reviewing it! Put your energy and time elsewhere and help the unfortunate this holiday season instead of worrying about what Dr Phil has to say about Bratz!
