Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

As more students and teachers lives are put at risk.

I become very frustrated and upset with each new occurrance of shootings in schools, colleges, etc.  I am 54 and my husband is 61.  After this show we were discussing that we both grew up with a large number of guns/weapons available in our homes.  We were taught about the guns and knew what their purpose was and how to use them.  Neither one of us remember any type of behavior such as we witness today.  It is not because we did not have access to guns/weapons, or that there was not bullying or people being rejected by the opposite sex.  So we ask ourselves - what is different today?  We both agree that the amount of news coverage given each occurrance, the violence in movies and on television everyday, and also the video games that depict violence as fun, are three major contributors.  Being raised with guns, I disagree that placing more laws to restrict the guns in the hands of law abiding citizens is the answer. Our prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones due to this horrendous new 'fad'.

Homecoming Shooting

Dr. Phil,  You have been so helpful to me in my personal life and I usually tape your shows because I don't like to miss most of them.  I respect your authority in your chosen field and personally think you have helped Americans in their journey through this life we've all been given.  There are those isolated times when I don't see your point of view, and this program was one of them.  I know you are just as horrified as we all are about what is going on in our schools and I realize you want to use your platform to change things for the better.  I disagree with your attitude on this show however.  We all realize what a problem is going on with our youth in this country, but we are only treating the symptoms and not the cause.  The lady FBI profiler you had on the show was plainly speaking what the cause of our problems and you just kept hushing her up.  Until Americans realize that the violence our children are consuming each and every waking moment of their little lives, we can't ever begin to solve our problems.  We think a warning trailing across the screen to warn us of violence that is to be aired is the answer.  Don't seem to help far as I can tell.  We can install all the well intentioned programs we want to in our school, but until we can address the subliminal messages that are being injected directly into our society's brains constantly, there is no hope. I am so tired of the constant graphic images shown to us on main stream tv of criminal acts.  Hollywood takes artistic license to produce violence, sexual immorality, and rebellion to authority as their mainstays and with the human instict to gravitate to all of these things, we are held prisoner to an ever growing hunger to view and be witness to these acts.  Dr. Phil I know you are a student of world history and you are so very intelligent and you must know that America is sliding down that slippery slope that other civilizations have slid down on their way to total destruction.  A breakdown  in the home, infanticide (abortion), euthanasia, homosexuality, sexual perversion, and finally a total disregard for the  Word of God. Check the "Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" and see if their destruction was exactly that road map. Being a student of the Holy Bible, I realize God has a plan and that plan will be followed to the letter, it is being followed to the letter right here in the 21st century with us all as spectators.  But Hollywood and the media just pooh poohs it as some ancient belief system and don't feel it is relevant to our lives today.  There is nothing I can do about that, but with your position in the media you have the opportunity to make some difference in the way Americans think.  I beg you to spend much time in prayer and seek God's guidance to assist us in being in His Will and maybe, just maybe we can save some souls in these Last Days before our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ returns for His church.  I know that is not a common belief with most Americans, but I can't help that.  I have read it in the Bible countless times and I am one person that believes that the Bible is true down to the very last word.  I hope my message doesn't come across as some hate letter.  I love all God's creatures, but I know their actions are wrong based on His Laws. You have heard that it isn't the 10 Suggestions, those are Laws and they are still His. I beg each person reading this to examine themselves using the 10 Commandments as their yardstick and each of us have sinned and broken God's Laws.  Being a good person doesn't cut it, we have to take that step toward Christ, that is our only salvation.  We have all broken the Commandments and we are all judged guilty unless we have the Blood of Jesus covering us.  I know that's not a popular stance, but I didn't write the Bible.  We all need to spend more time in prayer for our country.  We are under attack right here in our homes and we don't even know it.

Under-reporting Violence in Schools

I have to admit that  every time a parent or child is blamed for the violence in schools, I do a slow burn.  It is my opinion that school districts and state education departments in general are working aggressively to keep closed the incidences of violence occurring in schools, consequently leading to these eruptions.  In New York State alone, under-reporting of violent incidents is as high as 60%, yet appears to remain unchecked.  Why? The focus therefore should be the under-reporting by school districts of violent incidents.
Until this root cause is addressed, violence in schools will continue, one more child will die, one more too many.

We worry about our troops coming home now we have to worry about our kids coming home?

When a police officer kisses his family before going to work, we always wonder: "Will this be the last time they walk out the door? A fifteen year old boy runs amuck in the supermarket shooting people at random because he's bored. All of his friends are in school. And he gets away with it because he's considered a juvenile delinquent and the only person to blame is the parents and society. Nobody teased him. He was just bored. Not only that, he gets away with it. We have made excuses for our kids since the beginning of time. Our laws are too lenient when it comes to our kids and we can't blame the parents nor society for the accessibility of weapons available on the market. We have to blame our laws. A child can buy a gun over the internet. A fork or a spoon can put an eye out. Weapons are available every day in every shape or form imaginable. We may not have control with regards to our children sneaking a steak knife in their back pack but we should make our laws clear in every school that child or not, you are not going to get away with it. These children are angry, frustrated and if we can't get them on time it will be too late for some of them. Everytime a shooter goes on a rampage, the first thing that everyone says about him is "He's a loner". Well of course he's a loner, he keeps killing his friends! The justice system is too lenient on juvies  and is unfair even for adults at times and that's the reason history is allowed to repeat  itself. They think its funny to see blood and guts and they will continue to do kill unless we stop them. A ten year old can get away with killing a child in the play ground,  and the excuse for his behaviour is, he did'nt know better. You're damn right, he knew better. His parents knew better and  If that's the case, how about a 70 year old man with alzeimers. He kills his wife after a Vietnam flash back and gets away with it. His excuse? He didn't know what he was doing either. So it's okay. If juvies can get away with murder then they should have an old geizer law for us. Let grandpa run amuck in a school or supermarket. He'll just get a slap on the hand like the other juvies would get. The laws have to change. We can't control what our kids watch on TV or the internet but we parents have to get involved in their lives. We are teachers, doctors, referees. We have to be psychiatrists, mentors and the best parents we can be. It's more easier to be a good parent than it is to be a bad one. I may not be mother of the year but I'm damn better than what I've seen. We need more shows like Dr. Phil. If our kids can't  talk to us at least  they can listen to a third party. I suggest a type of Dr. Phil for kids where kids (teens) run the show themselves. Who knows it may take off. In the meantime, this old geezer is going to pour Tide in the neighbor's pool.

dress on stage vs words used

 attempt 2

I am impressed with the fact that people on the program are dressed so nicely

but what happed to nice speech?

When I was learning to be a nice bi-polar person, I tried to use such and was

told that to do so only showed that I didn't think much of myself and to become the

person I wanted to be, nice, acceptable and respected I must use new words to

express myself.

Why are such words allowed on the show.  Learning to fight correctly does not

include words of those kind

God Bless Crandon

I  live in Crandon, and I am 39  years old,and I have been living here since I was 3 years old. I know all of the families involved in this tragedy, and I will tell you this,we have come together as a community.I was so worried that this great community would go after the shooters family for what HE did,but thank God, no has blamed his parents. We as a community, has come together as ONE,and I am so thankful for that. I can tell you that we had a candelight vigil on Wed. evening, and Tyler was included in the vigil, and I was so thankful. This community is mourning the loss of 7 of our young adults, and it is has been a very rough week to say the least. The lines for the viewings are unbeleivable, having to wait at least 2 and half hours to get to the families, and it takes at least 5 hours to get everyone through.I do have to say, I am very impressed with my community,as I was afraid we would have some of our members try to take advantage of the tv crews and try to get into the limelight, but so far, most have declined, and I am so proud of my community for not giving into the media. This community is suffering, and we don't need someone going on tv and adding "fuel to the fire". The only ones who know what really happened are sadly the victims. There have been a lot of speculations, and that is what they are speculations, and for someone to go in front of a tv reporter and say what they have "heard"would be very wrong on so many levels. I have seen many other communities go through similiar situations as we are,and you see alot of the citizens trying to tell you what happened, when you know deep down, that 99% of it is speculation, and that they are only doing it to get on tv,and I can proudly say that Crandon has basically "shut out" the media. Yes, I know a lot of you want to hear from the victims families, but you have to remember, this is a small town, and they just truly want to mourn "alone". I hope that doesn't offend anyone, but if you live in a small community, you will understand.

This shooting did not take place in our school,it was at the home of one of the victims, and yes it did include students, but it had nothing to do with what happened at the other shootings that Dr. Phil was talking about. This wasn't about a student who was upset because he was being bullied by other students or by his teachers. I feel like we are being included what happened in PA and OH,but it isn't even close. I am not going to go into details, but I don't think we should be included as a "school shooting". It is great that Dr. Phil did offer his help,as some will need it,but I feel the story shouldn't have been included in the description of "school shootings". Our school system is great, and I have never felt unsafe when I was student, nor do I feel my own two children are unsafe at our school. My children understand that this did not happen at the school, and that our school is safe for them to attend.

   Again, please remember the victims~

A proud Crandon citizen.

School Shootings

I am seriously frustrated with the educational system in our county. We are told that we have a bullying program but it is non-existent. My son has suffered from bullying since Kindergarten and he is now 17 years old. I have gone to the administration every year and tried to get help. This has never been taken seriously, in fact they seem to find blame with the victim rather than the aggressor. My son happens to be extremely tall and has repeatedly been mislabeled due to this. He has no contorl over his size and he has a kind manner about him. I believe that anything that makes you stand out as different cna cause certain kids to be aggressive to these other kids. Usually the bullies have a inferiority complex and act out to compensate for this. Since my son has been unable to get help for this situation from the adults in charge, he has built up distrust for adults. He has had to take up for himself and has been punished for his actions eventhough he was not the aggressor.I am in the process of contacting Dr. Phill about appearing on the show in hopes that we can help to change our system locally for the kids that come after us. I have had to take my son out of school and he has suffered deeply with depression the last year which has comprimised his forward movement on finishing his high school education.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: ashleekat

In reading some of these messages I see that so many are defending the right to own guns. I personally am against it however most if not all of these kids where under age and/or obtained the gun illegally. It's a joke to even bring up the right to bear arms. Last I read it was illegal to own a gun under the age of 18 and without a proper permit, much less carry them on school campus.
Do these kids get these guns strictly onthier own or is it a family owned gun? If they did get it on thier own then how do they get weapons of WAR not just a hunting gun? I do not understand your logic. If the gun is not readilly available when you are in a very upset mental state then it can't be used toget rid of the frustration.

Thankful for living in the United States

Quote From: tzarmokey

I, like a lot of Australians are never ceased to be amazed how everytime we hear a news report of yet another shooting in America.  It seems to me that owning a gun is like a fashion accessory and i you dont have one then you feel naked.

After we had our worst shooting massacre about 10 years ago our government cracked down on guns by making it harder for us to obtain one. We must prove as to why we need to have a gun and we must carry a gun license at all times when we have a gun in our possession.  Yes we still have our crimes that involve shooting, however we've only had one massacre and how many have you had?

Your government needs to take a strong stand on gun regulations and not be so weak and tell the NRA to shut up and to take a real hard good look at themselves when they make comments saying guns are safe.   I understand i am going to have people say i have no idea or have the right to make the comments i have, thats you're choice.

I feel sorry for all the family and friends of people who have died needlessly at the hands of guns

I sure am glad I don't live in a country where the government can just decide one day to take away the citizens' rights. The NRA doesn't have anything to do with the fact that we can have guns here. It was given to us by The Bill  of Rights that are part of  our constitution. Those of us who live in a "right to carry " state must have our concealed weapons permit with us when we have our gun with us.

Guns are safe. It is the criminals who are unsafe. If you take the guns from law-abiding citizens, the criminals will still get their guns illegally.

The bottom line is that you people from Australia and Canada, or any other country, need to quit telling us what our government needs to do in the area of our gun ownership. Our elected official here know that the quickest way out of office is to start messing with our right to own guns.

How about Israel?

Quote From: ukmike

In reply to these comments. I do not defend the crime statistics, having worked as a pro active Police Officer for all of my career I cared about this on an hourly basis for just over 12 years.  I cannot comment on the US figures for crime, don't you have a real problem in many of your cities with youth gun crime, drive by shootings?  We are seeing the emergence of more guns being around, they come in from Eastern Europe but at the moment we are containing the problem by using specialist firearms teams.

Your solution to train and supply teachers with guns scares the hell out of me, is the problem that bad? Why stop at the teachers why not arm all the students. I had no idea people thought in such a way in the US. It does not seem to me like a mainstream view. Put me down as a coward because I would not want to carry a gun around with me whilst I was at home, I cannot imagine living that way.

My main point is that if guns are not so readily available, there would be less incidents.

Armed teachers works in Israel. They don' t have their schools shot up.
