Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Self defense shooting

Quote From: readmore

Are you familiar with "The Ten Commandments"?

One of them is an order (Commandment):  DO NOT KILL.

No one murdering kids in a school is exercizing their "God-given right to self defense."

I cannot recall the last time the evening news covered  a "self-defense" shooting, with the exception of police officers doing their job.

Murderers are criminals, using guns to kill innocent, defenseless children and teachers.

They invade schools because they know the school is filled with un-armed, innocent people.

Killers have no conscience, like any sociopath; and they are not part of any state militia.   These killers do not have any right to carry or use guns at those schools.

I wonder how many of these killers contemplate that Commandment, as they load their guns?

In a town near where I live, an elderly couple were awakened in the night by a noise. The husband got his gun that he kept loaded and in a bedside table(not stuck up in a closet with a stupid lock on it) and went to  investigate. He discovered that the person was in the hall bath. The elderly man told the intruder that he had a gun and to come out. The intruder told him not to shoot he would come out. The bathroom door opened and he came out with his hands behind him. Just as he was out of the bathroom he brought one hand out from behind him and cut the old man. Then the older fellow shot and killed the intruder. Of course he was not charged because it was evidently self-defense. The pollice had to take his gun, of course, and he went right out and bought another. He said he didn't know when he would need it again. This man who was exercising his God-given right to defend his home was a retired minister.

Like a lot of cities now, there is a lot of drug activity around where we live and home invasions are increasing. The incident I described is not unusual at all. There is news coverage of one or two a month. The intruder realizes he has made a big mistake right before the home owner pulls the trigger. And you know what? A lot of these home owners are elderly  folks like in the incident I related.

Some do, some don't!

Quote From: furby0001

Yep, I just started working at a school and you should see how the teachers

act when the parents aren't around.  Now, I think teaching is the hardest

job in the world and they are woefully underpaid but yelling at the kids

isn't going to help.  And believe me, they YELL.

I agree with you that teachers who yell are ineffectual and it achieves nothing!

Kids do not respect teachers who yell at them or parents who yell at them.    It is very disrespectful.

I am a teacher.  I raised two sons without yelling or spanking.  We talked to each other.  We respected each other because we listened to each other.

In class, I stand at the front.  When the starting bell rings, I look at the students and wait for silence.

I refuse to raise my voice.  Quickly, they settle down and look up at me because the room becomes SILENT!    Wow!    The amazing results of a few seconds of patience!   They see me, they settle down.

When they are quiet, I say:  "Thank you.  Today we are going to------."   They want to know what we'll do.

Commanding respect by appearing like a professional who has a game plan does earn respect!

Incidentally, this technique of waiting for silence saves your voice.  You need it to teach!  :)

No, it would not be "nice"!

Quote From: fromthesquare

Yes it is tragic.  It is also tragic that the children in schools are like sitting ducks to an armed madman with with a gun. Wouldn't it have been nice if someone had a gun.  It would have SAVED lives.  In different hands the same weapon becomes life saving.  Murders and sociopaths should not have guns.  But if they are illegal- they will still have them.  Law abiding citizens will, as always, abide by the laws.  Criminals will, as always, break the law.

I know not ONE teacher/colleague who wants to arm teachers!

Those of us women shudder to think of a large male student overpowering us to get the gun!

We may be smaller in stature; but we are larger in intellect.  If a student has access to a gun, a gun may end up killing someone at school.  Period.      Ask police officers if they support arming everyone!

The gun-toting public seems to be people filled with fear and paranoia!   They have revenge fantasies!

The rest of us are not so fearful; we want to live in a world that does not seek/use violence as an answer.

You are NOT a coward!

Quote From: ukmike

In reply to these comments. I do not defend the crime statistics, having worked as a pro active Police Officer for all of my career I cared about this on an hourly basis for just over 12 years.  I cannot comment on the US figures for crime, don't you have a real problem in many of your cities with youth gun crime, drive by shootings?  We are seeing the emergence of more guns being around, they come in from Eastern Europe but at the moment we are containing the problem by using specialist firearms teams.

Your solution to train and supply teachers with guns scares the hell out of me, is the problem that bad? Why stop at the teachers why not arm all the students. I had no idea people thought in such a way in the US. It does not seem to me like a mainstream view. Put me down as a coward because I would not want to carry a gun around with me whilst I was at home, I cannot imagine living that way.

My main point is that if guns are not so readily available, there would be less incidents.

Thank you for expressing the intelligent observations of a PEACE OFFICER!

Clearly, a person whose CAREER requires training and understanding the use of weapons is a person we need to respect.  Perhaps American gun owners have "wild West" fantasies to control society by violence!    After all, the world knows we have a "cowboy President" with a ranch and a swagger.

FACT:  The "wild West" eventually developed into communities and school districts.  But the mentality of

"kill or be killed" seems to linger, thanks to movies, gun dealers, and video games that feature killing.

People are no longer people.  They are targets!  There are more gun dealers than gas stations!

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: readmore

The "Bill of Rights"  is not a list of priorities, from first to last.  All amendments were created to address what had not been articulated in the previous Articles of Confederation.   The right to due process is equally important as the right to free speech.   State militias are not more important than a citizen's right to a jury trial.   Don't you agree?

I have already studied and satisfied the California requirement for teachers to thoroughly understand and support the Constitution.  I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies.

Have you actually read the Constitution, the "Bill of Rights", or the earlier Articles of Confederation?

Any library can provide you with copies.

The founding fathers failed to address citizens' rights in the original Articles of Confederation.   That is one reason they were pressed to write the later Constitution, with its "Bill of Rights."

I am very comfortable with my historical knowledge.    Are you also licensed to teach in California?

I have right here in my hands a New Webster's Dictionary and Roget's Thesaurus, copywright 1991. In the back of said book there is a copy of the Constitution of the United States and a listing of the 26 constitutional amendments including the first ten. Number one says:Freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly. Right to petition. Number two says:Right to keep and bear arms.

There is no conditionalizing to either one. It doesn't say that you can speak only on Tuesdays if you are wearing a three piece suit. Or you have to be a certain sex or age. As with the right to keep arms--guns. We have the right plain and simple.

I don't have to be licensed to teach here or on  the moon to know that the founding fathers were astute enough to know that a person at one point or another in time would need to defend his home or family and the police or army would not be around to help or prevent the trouble.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: wifeofbath

In Canada our homicide  rate is far lower than in the U.S.  People kill people here, too.  But since guns aren't 'at hand' in every household, we have to kill the hard way.

We have to strangle them, or bludgeon them, or drown them in a bathtub, or electrcute them, or stab them.

These other forms of murder are rather labor-intensive.  Their other disadvantage is that the target often manages to get away.  Sometimes the target is pretty strong, and can fight off the would-be killer.

Sometimes the target can see the attacker coming, and outrun him/her, especially if the weapon, say a big club for example, is rather heavy and slows the attacker down.

But Americans love efficiency above all things.  A gun is much more efficient killing tools than any other weapon. Especially if you are a coward.    You can shoot from hiding.  You can shoot someone who is running away.  You can shoot another human being from a car, and then drive away, so that you are at no risk at all .  You can shoot people with an automatic weapon, and spray down twenty or thirty of them if they are closely grouped, such as waiting at a bus stop, or sitting in a classroom.

And your children are dying in classrooms , and in home accidents in which the child thought the family guns were just toys, and wanted  to play 'bang, bang" ,  just like they see people doing on TV.

To the argument that easy access to guns is essential to one's personal safety, I can only point out the obvious:  if that were the case, then the U.S. murder rate should be lower than ours.  But it's not, is it?

And so although the geniuses who belong to the ARA keep chanting that guns don't kill people, nevertheless you people are dying at a pretty impressive rate.  You do love your killing tools!

DITTO TO EVERYTHING YOU SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

aLSO YOU HAVE THIS STUPID THING THAT IT A RIGHT TO CARRY GUNS FOR SELF DEFENCE IN AMERICA,

WELL, AS DR PHILL WOULD SAY,

AMERICA , HOW IS THAT WORKING FOR YOU??????

Best-seller to read!

Quote From: pjparker

Dr. Phil,  You have been so helpful to me in my personal life and I usually tape your shows because I don't like to miss most of them.  I respect your authority in your chosen field and personally think you have helped Americans in their journey through this life we've all been given.  There are those isolated times when I don't see your point of view, and this program was one of them.  I know you are just as horrified as we all are about what is going on in our schools and I realize you want to use your platform to change things for the better.  I disagree with your attitude on this show however.  We all realize what a problem is going on with our youth in this country, but we are only treating the symptoms and not the cause.  The lady FBI profiler you had on the show was plainly speaking what the cause of our problems and you just kept hushing her up.  Until Americans realize that the violence our children are consuming each and every waking moment of their little lives, we can't ever begin to solve our problems.  We think a warning trailing across the screen to warn us of violence that is to be aired is the answer.  Don't seem to help far as I can tell.  We can install all the well intentioned programs we want to in our school, but until we can address the subliminal messages that are being injected directly into our society's brains constantly, there is no hope. I am so tired of the constant graphic images shown to us on main stream tv of criminal acts.  Hollywood takes artistic license to produce violence, sexual immorality, and rebellion to authority as their mainstays and with the human instict to gravitate to all of these things, we are held prisoner to an ever growing hunger to view and be witness to these acts.  Dr. Phil I know you are a student of world history and you are so very intelligent and you must know that America is sliding down that slippery slope that other civilizations have slid down on their way to total destruction.  A breakdown  in the home, infanticide (abortion), euthanasia, homosexuality, sexual perversion, and finally a total disregard for the  Word of God. Check the "Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" and see if their destruction was exactly that road map. Being a student of the Holy Bible, I realize God has a plan and that plan will be followed to the letter, it is being followed to the letter right here in the 21st century with us all as spectators.  But Hollywood and the media just pooh poohs it as some ancient belief system and don't feel it is relevant to our lives today.  There is nothing I can do about that, but with your position in the media you have the opportunity to make some difference in the way Americans think.  I beg you to spend much time in prayer and seek God's guidance to assist us in being in His Will and maybe, just maybe we can save some souls in these Last Days before our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ returns for His church.  I know that is not a common belief with most Americans, but I can't help that.  I have read it in the Bible countless times and I am one person that believes that the Bible is true down to the very last word.  I hope my message doesn't come across as some hate letter.  I love all God's creatures, but I know their actions are wrong based on His Laws. You have heard that it isn't the 10 Suggestions, those are Laws and they are still His. I beg each person reading this to examine themselves using the 10 Commandments as their yardstick and each of us have sinned and broken God's Laws.  Being a good person doesn't cut it, we have to take that step toward Christ, that is our only salvation.  We have all broken the Commandments and we are all judged guilty unless we have the Blood of Jesus covering us.  I know that's not a popular stance, but I didn't write the Bible.  We all need to spend more time in prayer for our country.  We are under attack right here in our homes and we don't even know it.

There is a best-seller now whose name asks if we HAVE become the fallen Roman Empire!

Check it out!   The reasons for decline and collapse that applied then, eerily seem to apply now!

When a country becomes "too big for its britches" and is filled with self-destructive arrogance, it dies.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: dreamsurfbetsy

It has been a very long time since I have studied this.  So the powerful  NRA have misrepresented American citizens!   I believe that you are right on target.  Students' parents, and all Americans need to know what the Second Amendment provides for.

The NRA has nothing to do with the rights of US citizens to own guns. Gun ownership was a reality long before the NRA was ever started. What they do is keep people like the Clintons and the Kennedys and John Kerry and any other liberal Democrat from denying us the right to private gun ownership. One has to wonder why they are so afraid of people having access to guns.
