Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Don't put so much of the blame on the schools

Quote From: msmangus

I have to admit that  every time a parent or child is blamed for the violence in schools, I do a slow burn.  It is my opinion that school districts and state education departments in general are working aggressively to keep closed the incidences of violence occurring in schools, consequently leading to these eruptions.  In New York State alone, under-reporting of violent incidents is as high as 60%, yet appears to remain unchecked.  Why? The focus therefore should be the under-reporting by school districts of violent incidents.
Until this root cause is addressed, violence in schools will continue, one more child will die, one more too many.

The public schools have been in decline since the 1970's when we listened to crazy "professionals" who taught "student rights" (funny, but adults at 18 have rights, not children) and pushed the idea that we have to allow crap so we don't injure a child's self esteem. We also couldn't search lockers because of the "rights" of children.

Families have also collapsed. We all want  to work so we have nicer homes, nicer cars, vacations, electronic gadgets for the kids, family cell phones, brand named clothing, etc. However, we left God, stopped getting to know our neighbors, stopped eating dinner together, stopped helping others (even strangers) and stopped spending time with our children. We also decided that morals didn't really matter providing we were the best and always won. Then we wonder why our school are the way they are????

Yes, school districts HIDE lots of things. I personally exposed some of it during my 9 years teaching high school at a large school in the 11th largest district in the country. If parents knew the violent kids allowed to sit beside them (many of them awaiting trial, etc) they would faint. That's why more parents MUST get invovled in their kids' education. There should be NO EXCUSE for parents not to take an active room WEEKLY in their child's education. They need to spend time with their kids each night to learn what is going on in their lives. They need to demand they work hard in school (value education) and take part in extracurricular activities like sports, band, drama, clubs, etc.

The root cause, though, is NOT the schools undereporting. The root cause lies with families...their dysfunction. Only parents can change those statistics.

Schools are simply a reflection of society and parents need to stand up and DEMAND better principals, school boards, teachers, etc. Parents also need to start taking the time to raise better children!!!

Your anti-Americanism is not appreciated

Quote From: lisamaree

without reading all the previous posts i just have to say ... AS ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN I AM ABSOLUTLY SICK OF READING THIS CRAP ABOUT THIS HAPPENING IN AMERICA AND AM ABSOLUTLEY BAFFELED AT THE AMOUNT OF VIOLENCE AND ACCEPTANCE OF VIOLENCE IN AMERICAN CULTURE!

IN AUSTRALIA WE HAD A MASSACRE YEARS BACK AND THE GOVERNMENT CRACKED DOWN AND MADE EVRYONE HAND IN THERE GUNS WE HAVENT REALLY HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE when the hell is america going to ban the guns yous are so parioniod about protecting yourselves from each other and have become so parioniod that u think you need more and more guns to protect yourselves from each other, if you get rid of the guns then u wont have anything to have to protect yourself from in the first place YES its people that kill people but the guns are there to help them kill people get rid of the guns and there will be less wepons to HELP you kill people it absolutley baffles me that yous do not get this!!!! the stupid law thaT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CARRY GUNS TO PROTECT YOURSELF IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF CRAP I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!!!! INSTEAD OF GETTING MORE GUNS GET RID OF THE GUNS AND START FIXING THE PROBLEMS THAT MAKE PEOPLE WANT TO KILL PEOPLE IN THE FIRST PLACE! AS SOMEONE BATTELING DEPRESSION FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS I UNDERSTAND WHY THESE PEOPLE WILL FEEL AS BAD AS THEY DO THAT THEY WANT TO KILL, START FOCUSING ON HELPING THSES PEOPLE!!! UGHH IT BAFFLES ME THE AMOUNT OF VIOLENCE IN AMERICA GEORGE BUSH IS NOTHING BUT A BIG MURDERER!!!! TELLING KIDS TO STOP SHOOTING EACH OTHER THEN GOING OVER AND BOMBING ALL THESE COUNTRIES AND KILLING MILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE  WITH NO REGERDS TO ALL THE HUMAN LIVES THAT HE KILLS OVERSEAS JUST BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS OF A FEW PEOPLE FROM THESE COUNTRIES ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE TO SUFFER AND IT DOESNT MATTER INSTEAD OF KILLING FAMILIES FROM OTHER COUNTRIES START HELPING YOUR OWN COUNTRY !!!! FOR FRIK SAKE MY COUNTRY AINT THAT PERFECT BUT THE REASON WE DONT HAVE ANY SHOOTINGS IS CAUSE ITS HARDER TO GET GUNS, FAIR ENOUGH WE HAVE LESS PEOPLE SO THERE WONT BE AS MANY SHOOTINGS, BUT LIKE YOU SEE GUNS IN AMERICA ALL THE TIME IVE NEVER HAD ACCESS TO A GUN OVER HERE

eVERYTIME I HEAR ALL THIS PATRIOTIC CRAP ABOUT AMERICA BEING THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD I SHUDDER TO MYSELF

DID YOU PEOPLE LEARN NOTHING FROM COLUMBINE , BY THE WAY I URGE ANYONE WHO HASNT SEEN IT TO WATCH BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE!!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST PUT TOGETHER THINGS IVE EVER SEEN ON THIS SUBJECT

First of all, you are listening to Michael Moore, a talented man who unfortunately is so jaded and dishonest in his films. He's an avowed socialist whose glass is always half empty. He talks about public schools, but lives in a pent house apartment with armed security as he sends his children to PRIVATE school. His dishonesty in one firm has already been well documented, so I would not be surprised if his Columbine film had the same problems. Moore caters to people like you who live in another country and do not know much about the U.S....you get your news from Hollywood and the biased American press that shows only the message it wishes to get out.

I am sure you have problems now that the honest people do not have guns. Criminals will NOT turn over guns. Only the honest peope will (the same people who will never shoot anyone in their lifetimes unless their lives are directly threatened). You are sitting ducks for criminals. Perhaps that's OK with you, but my children deserve more than that. I want to protect them when someone coming to rape and kill my family (for either robbery or just plain sport) enters my locked home. And under our CONSTITUTION, something you apparently don't know about or care about, I have that right to protect my family. I have trigger locks on my guns, had to go thru extensive training to carry them on me and they are only used during practice at the range. However, they WILL be used if I or my family are ever attacked.

This is America. With all it's problems, it's STILL the most free country on earth. Anyone who wants to succeed here, WILL succeed here. People aren't sneaking into your country so apparently our beautiful America isn't that bad after all! "Shudder" all you want, but  it's obvious you haven't lived here and you don't know all the wonderful things America has to offer (that's problaby because you are listening to Michael Moore, who does NOT love this country....expect the money he makes off it).

By the way, have your forgotten how your country was formed? Talk about funny.....

BULLYING & GUNS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM!!!

You know, I am REALLY bugged by all the posts blaming bullying for kids picking up guns and slaughtering kids and teachers. Bullying has gone on for centuries (it's sadly apart of human nature), but it wasn't until a couple of decades ago that guns and other weapons started being used against these supposed "bullies" (half the time the targets aren't even the bullies!)

Kids who are raised well with love, attention, TIME, rules, structure, support, GOD, etc, do not pick up guns and kill others. Some of these kids get depressed, but they committ suicide not homocide.

The bottom line is these killing teens have FAMILY PROBLEMS. They have dysfunction in their families that 99% of the time lie at the feet of their parents (if they even have 2 parents these days). American families are in the toilets these days due to drugs, adultry, divorce, parents being lousy role models, parents being too busy for their kids, etc.

Kids who are raised in strong families aren't the ones constantly picked on. They can handle the bullying and know what to say and do to stop it. Many tell their caring parents who get involved. Kid without the strong family structure are easy targets for more aggressive kids and they often have nobody they feel they can tell.

Kids like the young man who recently killed others and himself DO NOT KILL because they were bullied.  That young man killed after years of sadness, isolation and probably depression. The school probably did not do enough to help this young man, but they are not the primary responsible party. The bottom line is always the parents.

Bullying was the least of that boy's problems!!!

EXCELLENT COMMENTS!

Quote From: nj1811

I realize this show was only an hour long and there was a lot of information to cover, however, I was irritated at the constant interruptions (sorry Dr. Phil) when it was important to hear what the guests had to say.  The incident in Crandon was isolated I think and not really relevant to high school shootings.  Kids in school don't think about the consequences of teasing and bullying and yet we see the results more and more.  Why can't someone make a documentary about the aftermath of school shootings and everything that comes from it - the end of dreams, devastated lives, grief, it goes on and on. They should show this documentary in every middle school in America.  Everyone just wants to fit in and be accepted, especially teens, and if someone is a little bit different than the norm, kids need to know and understand what can happen.

Thank you, viewer, for pointing out some KEY PROBLEMS:

1.  Dr. Phil needs to LET THE EXPERTS share their wisdom.  WE WANT DEPTH in these discussions.

Parents, students, and educators deserve more than sound-bites on this SERIOUS PROBLEM.

It was extremely disappointing to not give the profiler more time to explain and share her knowledge.

2.  The ROOT CAUSES (etiology) of the pain/anger that drive anti-social conduct like KILLING are not

    being adequately addressed:

    a) ABSENT, UNINVOLVED fathers  (lonely boys without role models)

    b)  ABSENT, UNINVOLVED mothers  (lonely kids without role models)

    c)  BULLYING by kids, parents, siblings, and others  (frustrated kids without adult mentors)

    d)  UNDIAGNOSED/UNTREATED psychiatric problems  (untreated kids without help)

    e)  SOCIOPATHIC (anti-social, conscience-free) behaviors on record that are ignored

3.  HAPPY KIDS DO NOT KILL PEOPLE!

4.  IMMEDIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS NEED TO BE PUT IN PLACE,  such as locked classrooms,

until the deeper issues are confronted, discussed at HOME AND AT SCHOOL, and addressed.

Greater accountability is an imperative.  If the parents will not get on board, there must be a school program, implemented as a REQUIREMENT, like Health class, to TEACH the kids appropriate social behavior.  WE ARE FAILING THE KIDS IN THIS COUNTRY.  WE ARE EARNING "F"'s  as ADULTS.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: piecekpr

My sympathies for the families, both the victims families as well as that young officer's, that are dealing with this tragedy.  That is what this is, a tragedy.

I am not an NRA member but I do not believe it was the gun that killed.  It was the troubled young man that chose to enter that room and begin pulling the trigger.  The fact that he was legal to carry a weapon shows that gun control will not work.  We cannot take these weapons away from our policemen, their jobs are already far too dangerous.

Someone posted that an average of 80 people are shot every day.  I would be willing to bet that the majority of those shootings (90% or more?) are drug related.  Drugs, made more valuable because they are illegal.  Guess what?!  You are never going to remove guns from the criminals hands.  You will only make the weapon worth that much more on the black market.

If you want to point fingers at the problems of today's society, I would suggest looking at the violence in movies.  How many times have I seen the "bad guy" pointing a gun in someone's face to get what he wants.  It's the solution to anything that gets in his way or makes him angry.  Film makers can say all they want about the violence in their movies not having an impact on our young children/adults.  Violence is seen as an quick and easy solution to what the troubled person views as insurmountable problems in their lives, weather that is school, work or their home life.

Would a person of good moral value choose that road?  Probably not but we have taken God out of so much of our lives, what chance do our children have?

I'm sorry this is so long.  Just a concerned citizen.

D

I agree with your comments posted.  I also feel that violence on television has given our children the wrong way to deal with situations.  We have to give our children the "tools" to deal with life instead of the television showing them.  This young man just "snapped" and this was his answer.  I am saddened for the family and the community as I realize it does take a community to raise a child.

child in need......

I can tell you first hand how horrible children can treat eachother and the despair they can inflict.

I am right now watching over my 16year old daughter that tried to take her life tonight as a result of High School torment and gossip.  I am lost as HOW to help this child, she refuses to return to school and felt this was her only  way out.  How as  parent do I help her???  I want her to be happy and succeed in life.  I NEED HELP SO BADLY....I AM AFRAID TO SLEEP, OR LEAVE HER FOR  A SECOND.

Parents.....PLEASE teach your children to be kind...WORDS CAN KILL

Violence is NOT the answer

Quote From: flthomcat

I can tell from your letter that you know little about guns and little about the training those who carry guns have! You also make it sound like all women can and will be overpowered. Speak for yourself. I have taken down 250 lb men in training. It's about SKILL, not size.

I am a former high school teacher (9 yrs) and a former felony parole officer (3 years). I have been trained to carry a firearm and I carry it when I travel alone with our children. I also have it close by when my husband is out of town and I carry it when I walk alone in the evenings.

I taught in a dangerous city school for 5 years. Kids were being arrested in my classroom. I had kids waiting trial (in seats) who were charged with attempted murder (drive by shootings), car jackings, home invasions, etc. THESE are just some of the kids in our public high schools nationwide. These are just some of the kids who sit next to innocent little Sally Sue and Johnny. John Q Public doesn't know half the story!

All I had was a cell phone when I was stalked by a night school teen and threatened with death by a suicidal kid (I was 8 months pregnant at the time). Do you really think my phone would have worked well against one of these young thugs with a gun? Should we just liine up and allow one of them to shoot us....kids, me, students on the other sides of the thin walls?

People who carry concealed weapons have to keep them secured on their body and out of sight. Nobody ever knows when I was carrying my weapon. They're not supposed to. The weapon is there for  me to use if ever needed. I have had enough training to be responsible. How many crimes have you heard where a person carrying a concealed weapon has shot someone who wasn't attacking? I have heard of ZERO and I am in my 40's.

TRUST ME, LADY. If a student WANTS to kill, he will kill. It won't be a teacher's concealed weapon he uses. He'll just bring one with him to school!!!

You're right, you are not "fearful." You are clueless and uninformed. You will be serving tea and crumpets to a home invader as your kids are being killed. Or better yet, dial 911 and just ask the attacker to wait until law enforcement arrives in 10 minutes. GEESH>

I don't want or need revenge. I am against the death penalthy AND against killing babies (apparently that's ok with many women). But I do have a right to protect myself and my family. This idea that a teacher's gun will CAUSE some kid to kill is just plain FOOLISH.

Look at the teacher who is suing to carry one. Her ex-husband has threatened to kill her. She's a teacher with students. Do you want her to be unarmed when he walks into her classroom and starts shooting her and her students? I'd rather she be TRAINED and carry a gun. At least my child would stand a chance!

I HAVE spoken for myself.   I stand behind each post I have taken the time to write on this issue.

Other viewers have agreed that violence is not an answer.  It is the problem!

Perhaps you could open your mind to the possibility that arming everyone is escalation.

Shutting the barn door after horse escapes

After watching the show on the school shootings, I was concerned with the "answers" the "experts" came up with. A book on what to do in a crises at school is, in my opinion, like shutting the barn door after the horse has already escaped.  I believe we need to be proactive years before these kids get to the point where they are so frustrated and angry that they want to kill people.  We  adults have made so many mistakes in the last 10-15 years, and now we are starting to see the results of our stupidity.  We allow children to be disrespectful to everyone-parents, teachers, and each other with absolutely no consequences for that behavior. We have taken phys ed out of schools so kids can no longer burn off their stress and excess energy in physical excertion. Nor do we encourage physical activity outside of school. We have a society that eats mostly junk-no nutrition, just fat and sugar- filled overprocessed garbage.  Then take into account our TV programming  that is so loaded with advertising urging us to buy! buy! buy! all kinds of useless junk and worthless "foods" that a friend of mine from Russia says our TV ads remind him of how Russian propaganda was there 15 years ago, which is a scary thought.  The buy! buy! buy! mentality of TV has created a society where the majority of both parents have to work to afford the things they're talked into thinking they must have resulting in kids being left home alone, ignored and unsupervised, to watch violent, disrespectful, rude and crude TV programming, or to play violent, bloody, crude and disrespectful computer games.  Add to this the growing number of single-parent homes with no mom or no dad and kids who feel somehow it's their fault that mom or dad left. Then consider that the majority of kids I know have absolutely no responsibility around their homes--they don't have to help care for their homes, help prepare meals, work in the yard, or even make their own beds and I believe that the combination of all these things creates a society with kids completely lost, feeling useless, worthless, bored and out of control. Parents I know seem to think that their kids will just somehow pick up the things they need to learn, like self-control, responsibility, self-respect , a good work ethic, cooking, laundry, child care and everything else automatically without them having to be there to teach them these things. I believe that unless and until these basic issues are corrected, the problem with kids killing kids will continue to escalate. No handbook on how to deal with a crises in school is going to help.  The shots will have already been fired.

Lets not lose our freedom

I do agree about the violence on tv.  Even in these crazy science fiction cartoons there is some form of violence.  I do not agree in taking guns away from Americans.  When they say gun control they really mean no guns for any one except for law enforcement or the military.  I do believe there should be stronger gun control and we know we need a law enforcement that is God fearing across the United States.  I am sorry for the families who lost love ones.  But if the young man had not been shot by law enforcement and was taken into custody.  Where would you think he would of ended up at the prison.  When some one murders some one I believe they should be executed.  I believe that if we are to have laws for stronger gun control then we need to break down the black market that provides guns illegally.  This young man was a part time law enforcement.  It could be he snapped maybe his relationship went south or maybe he really did lose it and snapped.  Once again I am sadden by the families who lost love ones in a terrible ordeal and I hope their friends and families will not give up on life, but will move forward.
