Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Kids playing games with reality

When I watched the Dr. Phil show today, something kept popping up in my mind. Every day at my house the X-Box is on and the kids are playing HALO-3 constantly. In that game, you are shooting people right and left. Basically with not much thought put into it. It's a game played by mostly young men. Do you think that boys are growing accustom to shooting people and it doesn't effect them? I asked my 14yr old son today what he thought about it. I asked him if he thinks boys can just go off and shoot people and it doesn't affect them? He said absolutely not. Shooting someone in real life is very tragic, scary and definately emotional. I was glad to hear him say that, but I do feel that there are young men in this day and age that could shoot people in cold blood and not have a bad feeling about it. They may have gone beyond their pain that they are feeling and have become numb and feel rebellious. It's those kind of kids that I am afraid of for anyone who comes into contact with them. Just two days ago, our nearby high school was under lockdown all day long, due to 3 phone calls to the school, someone was going to bring a gun and shoot people. I can't image what this world will be like when my kids are adults. Jesus can't come back soon enough for me.

Pat Brown an expert?

We have been hearing her type of rhetoric for years. Disaffected kids, violent video games, violence on tv and in movies and heavy metal music have been blamed for more deaths than Adolph Hitler.  School shootings like Columbine happen because children are allowed and in some cases encouraged to be nasty to each other. When I was in High School in the 80's I was tormented on a daily basis. I was "fat, ugly , dirty.." you name it I was called it.  I think if I had access to a gun I could've been these kids. Instead I quit school, I often feel I was pushed out by "the better kids".

Stop blaming the medias. If we look at movies and TV through the years there has always been violence. Look at the 50's every other show was a western or mob/cop related.

What needs to be done is to stop teaching children that it is ok to pick on the "lesser" children.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: bagannon

I am so sad that there are so many young children killing others and they taking their own lives. People are saying whats going on in their home life. Sometimes these kids are getting kicked out of school for no reason whatever happened to no child left behind law. You need to go to these schools and see how these teachers and staff be talking and treating are children. I feel thats why these kids are coming back to these schools and doing these killings. My prayers go out to all the families that have lost their children  in these school violences.
I agree that there are too many children getting in trouble at school for things that are not as important as some things that are overlooked. But isn't that the way society is as well? Our jails are housing people who do non-violent crimes and don't have the room to put away those who are a risk to society.

re:god back into our schools

Quote From: vegasdave

Maybe it's time to go back to square one! Remember when we said the pledge of allegiance in school with reference to God allowed?

Remember when we were allowed to pray in school if we wanted to?

Remember  when Christmas decorations on public property could include references to God?

Remember when the majority meant something in this country?

Well, in our great country 80% of the population profess a belief in God, yet we cave in to pressure from about 10%, maybe less than that, of the population that are against prayer or any mention of God in or on public grounds!

A majority of the posts that I've read today refer to praying for the families of the people involved, or they end in 'God bless you'.

Before God was taken out of our schools, the worst thing we saw from our children was a fight, and usually after that fight there was reconciliation between the parties involved.

These murderous outbursts did not start until after we took God out of the schools! We turned our back on the one sure thing we had: Our creator!

Until we allow Him back into our lives, we can do all the studies we want and change all the rules, but none of it will help if we don't allow God back into our schools!

Excuse me but I don't consider God to be a Christmas tree, or a response to a sneeze. I know that Christmas decorations are pretty, and saying God bless you is polite but those superficial aspects of religion mean pretty much nothing to shaping who you are. It is faith and morals which shape human beings and those are taught by parents and all the other people that children come into contact with growing up, through religion or just through mere guidance. "God" as you see it, being prayer recitation, and superficial markings on signs or decorations, has only been in our schools since the 50s in response to communism, thats when it was added to the pledge of allegiance, money, and many other aspects of public and government administration. Children may have not been shooting others en masse in a school setting but there were certainly many many murders and other crimes taking place at the time.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: delishelly

This is a terrible tradgedy for the families and the townspeople. I agree with you that this young man has a family(and are too victims of this terrible act of violence.  How he became a member of the police force is not thepoint of the matter.  There are a great number of respected members of law enforcement out there, and hopefully will not be dis-respected .  This is one profession that truly deserves the highest acccolades one can have.  What  I don't agree with is why give this guy the publicity about why or how did he do this horrible act.  I'm sure his family has or will be counselled, about his behaviour or lack of.  Listening or watching the show is not worth my time for an open unended question and answer period. If I may end this with my heartfelt sympathies to all the families, so sorry.

thank you

hello, i am sure you have heard about the 17 yr old kid that shot and killed one of our finest police men, and what kills me, is how long our courts are taking to put this punk wehere he belongs. now they are saying because he didn't have a lawyer of they didn't do something right on this case, they might not be able to use his own testimony that he did in fact killed this cop!!!all of a sudden it's all about what our systems did and didn't do, and that poor woman who was left behind, with 2 small kids, are having their pain dragged out some more!!! i feel sorry for the cops and thier families, because they are the ones who suffer the most, not the cop that died!!keep letting these kids get away with murder, just like they did oj simpson!! thank you

Rude high-school students

I hate what is happening in our schools.   Today in a small Midwestern town  I was walking past the entrance of a store, and a group of obviously jocks and cheerleaders came strolling in as if to say "here we are".   The gals just almost ran in to me.   I said "are you just going to keep on walking?"  And they stopped.  Kids don't seem to be learning any manners whatsoever.

I am in a helping profession, and believe me I see young people everyday, who have no clue.  Not one of them grasp that agencies will help them, if they are helping themselves.

I pray that someone gets through to these kids.  And yes if they are displaying bad behavior of any kind;  find a way to make it easier to "tell".  Lets leave our young people with the assurance that this is a good thing.

I totally agree, Instead of having a zero tolerance policy for weapons where kids get expelled for bringing mini plastic squirt guns to school maybe there should be one for bullying. Cliques should be highly discouraged, it may be tradition for the popular kids to torture everyone else but its also tradition for highschool to be the worst period in many peoples lives because of this, and that shouldn't be ok.

Lets be proactive- Teach Empathy to grade schoolers

I was surprised that the show focused on signs to look for.... lets take it a step further and move to prevention.  I'd be willing to bet that the common denominator among all the school shooters, as well as any violent offender is the absense of empathy.  Lets teach our grade schoolers empathy.  If the parents do not have the capacity to teach this very important emotional component, it is up to the rest of us to step up, be involved in your children's school, and help the school administrators teach our children empathy.  Sometimes it takes a village to raise a child.

I found some information about teaching empathy, that I hope the readers to find of use... and can put to good use.  Instead of licking our wounds, and looking for the "signs"... lets work together and stamp this out.

An operational definition I like to use has two components: First, empathy is an ability to imagine with some degree of accuracy what it's like to be in the predicament of the other person; and secondly, empathy entails the ability to communicate that awareness so the other person feels understood.

Empathy entails a different kind of learning. Just reading textbooks won't develop this skill. Nor is it a visual-motor skill, like getting the knack in golfing or basketball. Nor is empathy a matter of simple good will, caring, or an intention to be sensitive. Some books or papers about empathy describe it as a sensitivity to nonverbal communication, but I think this is only a small component. Rather, I view this skill as a matter mainly of focused imagination, picturing in the mind what it might be like to be in the other person's predicament. This skill also involves an integration of remembering, rational thinking, intuition, and feeling, all of which support the active imaginative process.

Empathy is teachable, but it requires experiential learning, practice. I challenge the cliche that "you either have it or you don't." Certainly there is a variable distribution of talent for this endeavor, but just about anyone can improve whatever level of innate ability with practice.

Furthermore, the natural vehicle for the experiential learning of an interpersonal skill–in this case, teaching empathy–, is role playing. It uses all of the aforementioned skill components. Role playing is a natural vehicle of learning because it's an extension of the imaginative, pretend play of childhood (Blatner & Blatner, 1997). It should be noted that this approach is often neglected in the course of traditional education, because it addresses a different type of learning than that which can be easily tested on exams. Role playing builds a deeper type of understanding and a more flexible type of thinking, qualities which will become increasingly important in the coming years. However, what most kids learn involves memorization and calculation, logical composition, and other more didactically taught skills. Role playing involves an experiential type of learning.

Tragedy has roots

It is tragic for everyone involved that this kind of horrific event has happened. I pray for for everyone to heal.

There is no coincidence that we have more guns per household than any other country in the world. And we're not even fighting a war on our own land. And yet we are and have been killing innocent people all over the world since the end of the Second World War.

Everytime we as a Nation go out and kill people in other countries, our murder rate goes up dramatically here at home, among the American people. And who is doing the killing in those other countries? Young American kids from all over this wonderful country filled with well-meaning young American kids. Who are lied to by our own Government. And yet these young American kids many times find out that they are being lied to by their Leaders up top, but fear persecution if the truth comes out when they get back home - unfortunately, if they get back home.

In other words, Our Government shows the American People that if we have a problem.... The solution is to Kill it.

So, why wouldn't an upset young American kid or not fully mature adult see the solution to their problems being solved by killing their problems or what they think caused their problem(s)?

I could go into quite a bit detail about how We, meaning, the United Sates Government or rather the Corporations who are only interested in Power and more Power have killed Hundreds of thousands of innocent people in countries like; Greece, Indonesia, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Turkey, Haiti, Guatamala, the Phillipines, El Salvador and Chili. But our Govt. hides it and pretends in doesn't happen. And we are too busy with our lives to know or believe that this Amazing Country filled with all these fantastic, loving people could be from a place that commits these kinds of crimes.

It's like a company. If the head is sick - it will trickle down to the body - of the American people. It's very sad. I think the first thing we can do as a Loving Group of Americans is to become more aware of what is really going on in the entire world. While we pray for our Political and Corporate leaders to find a better way to solve their problems. And we as a People really ask: What is True? And: What is False? Simply demand of ourselves and each other... The truth.

Then as We 'Shine' as Individuals and as Stronger, Loving, Children of God... Our children will automatically begin to follow our footsteps and find new ways of dealing with their own very real and painful temporary problems.

My hope is that we look to this as One of the many Solutions to the Tragedies like this one among our children.
