Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

your show about school shootings

i enjoyed your show very much except for one thing the Dr's kept trying to imply that these kids were the results of only mental problems and thats just bull!!! Bullying is a major problem in the schools i was the brunt of bullying, i didnt shoot anyone but i found a way out of it.  If you feel there is no way out you feel you have to do something to end it.  im not saying its right but i know the feeling for some they dont have the self control they should have im not saying they are innocent but i know for a fact they either act out like the shootings or in the long run after years of humiliation kill themselves.  Thank you for letting me vent

i think youre pretty stupid in saying that!how old are you? i know when i was in school, there were never vever things going on like they are now!!what day in age did you come from? if you were taught about god and his devine plan, there would be less of these kind of things going on!! get a grip will ya? it's only going to  get worse, unless we the people do something about this!!starting with yourself!!

I certainly was taught about God, that is how I am sure that it is much more important to be a good person, have faith, and morals, than to write God on everything.

as an aside you are certainly not following Dr. Phil's advice to argue about issues not to sink personal attacks and name calling. It is you who sounds juvenile when you accuse me of being a school shooter.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: powerfullight

It is tragic for everyone involved that this kind of horrific event has happened. I pray for for everyone to heal.

There is no coincidence that we have more guns per household than any other country in the world. And we're not even fighting a war on our own land. And yet we are and have been killing innocent people all over the world since the end of the Second World War.

Everytime we as a Nation go out and kill people in other countries, our murder rate goes up dramatically here at home, among the American people. And who is doing the killing in those other countries? Young American kids from all over this wonderful country filled with well-meaning young American kids. Who are lied to by our own Government. And yet these young American kids many times find out that they are being lied to by their Leaders up top, but fear persecution if the truth comes out when they get back home - unfortunately, if they get back home.

In other words, Our Government shows the American People that if we have a problem.... The solution is to Kill it.

So, why wouldn't an upset young American kid or not fully mature adult see the solution to their problems being solved by killing their problems or what they think caused their problem(s)?

I could go into quite a bit detail about how We, meaning, the United Sates Government or rather the Corporations who are only interested in Power and more Power have killed Hundreds of thousands of innocent people in countries like; Greece, Indonesia, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Turkey, Haiti, Guatamala, the Phillipines, El Salvador and Chili. But our Govt. hides it and pretends in doesn't happen. And we are too busy with our lives to know or believe that this Amazing Country filled with all these fantastic, loving people could be from a place that commits these kinds of crimes.

It's like a company. If the head is sick - it will trickle down to the body - of the American people. It's very sad. I think the first thing we can do as a Loving Group of Americans is to become more aware of what is really going on in the entire world. While we pray for our Political and Corporate leaders to find a better way to solve their problems. And we as a People really ask: What is True? And: What is False? Simply demand of ourselves and each other... The truth.

Then as We 'Shine' as Individuals and as Stronger, Loving, Children of God... Our children will automatically begin to follow our footsteps and find new ways of dealing with their own very real and painful temporary problems.

My hope is that we look to this as One of the many Solutions to the Tragedies like this one among our children.

I agree.  Let's stop the violence in all areas of life.  These things don't happen in Canada

where guns are less available and they don't start wars.  I'm really upset with that

man who said the whole problem is that girls should know their life is in danger

when they break up with a guy.  What??  I've broken up with alot of guys.  You

should do it gracefully and not humiliate them but that should be true for men

and women.   If guys think they should kill someone who is breaking up with them,

let's focus on the parents of the boys and teach them to raise them to be

less violent!

Quote From: ukmike

Here in the UK we do not have the right to bear arms, even Police Officers here do not carry gun routinely. The only officers allowed to carry firearms are highly trained and in Specialist units. I was a Police Dog handler K9 unit, I had no access to firearms.

We had an incident in Dunblane Scotland a few year back, a youth who belonged to a gun club opened fire in the local school he killed and injured some children, Our British Tennis star Andy Murray was a pupil at the school and he still shows problems from that time.

Our Government banned all citizens from owning guns even if they belonged to gun clubs, There has not been a problem again since. That is not to say that we got rid of the reason why someone would want to carry out such an awful act, I believe the reasons in our society still exist. If you disenfranchise people for long enough they will snap and react as you have seen in your shootings at US schools.

So you have at least two things to deal with, Gun ownership and the bigger problem of how individuals are being treated by the community. The later is more difficult because perhaps we do not like to own up to the fact that somehow we are allowing things to happen in our schools like bullying, physically and physiologically. By the fact we focus on the winners and completely sideline those less capable.

We do not get the Dr.Phil show live here and I would be interested to hear what the good Dr has to say about the causes and the ways we can end the problems.

Dr. Phil talks more sense than any man I know, if he cannot help then what chance do the rest of us stand to solve the problem.

I totally Agree how gun control is handled in the UK.. Unfortunately here in the states there are those that will protest and say it's in our Constitution to be able to bear arms.. What these people don't remember is how long ago the Constitution was written and how life and guns have changed since then.. Gun control has been a long battle here in the states.. Me,myself, I'm TOTALLY against guns, especially in the home.. My Heart and Prayers go out to All the Families..

Excuse me but I don't consider God to be a Christmas tree, or a response to a sneeze. I know that Christmas decorations are pretty, and saying God bless you is polite but those superficial aspects of religion mean pretty much nothing to shaping who you are. It is faith and morals which shape human beings and those are taught by parents and all the other people that children come into contact with growing up, through religion or just through mere guidance. "God" as you see it, being prayer recitation, and superficial markings on signs or decorations, has only been in our schools since the 50s in response to communism, thats when it was added to the pledge of allegiance, money, and many other aspects of public and government administration. Children may have not been shooting others en masse in a school setting but there were certainly many many murders and other crimes taking place at the time.

I've been working in a school for a few months and people are upset

if they don't get their prayer moment.  Can't people pray at home?

My daughter prays before bed.  Church is for learning about God,

not school.  Our country was founded on separation of church and

state.  Move to a country where religion is forced upon you if you

don't like freedom.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: crickie

I agree that there are too many children getting in trouble at school for things that are not as important as some things that are overlooked. But isn't that the way society is as well? Our jails are housing people who do non-violent crimes and don't have the room to put away those who are a risk to society.

Yep, I just started working at a school and you should see how the teachers

act when the parents aren't around.  Now, I think teaching is the hardest

job in the world and they are woefully underpaid but yelling at the kids

isn't going to help.  And believe me, they YELL.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Being a teacher of middle school for 12 years I have seen many things.  Columbine High School is only 60 miles away.  I never could have imagined that I would have to practice and put in place our lock/down, lock/out drills.  Our country has a huge problem.  I would like more people to understand that parenting, or lack of parenting has the greatest influence on the choices a kid makes, including bringing a gun to school.  The students in my class with supportive families (even step-families) are more likely to succeed and make good choices than those with irresponsible parents.  Teachers can only do so much for their students.  Schools can only do so much to protect them.  We can't fix their homes.  Instead of blaming school systems and teachers lets look to creating healthy families and healthy kids!

we spend so much time teaching women self defense and awareness techniques to prevent rape and other violence and yet so little time teaching boys and men how to respect women and not treat them like property. I have been forced to become aware as if I am going out into the wilderness and preparing myself against wild animal attacks. Sure some men attack women because they have been humiliated but that is an extreme rarity. Most women are attacked because they say no ( which is interpreted in crazy man speak as being a prude, hard to get, or a tease) or simply because the man has zero respect or even hatred for women.

School Shootings, Reader REaction and LOOK, It's the NRA, and the Oh so many Oversimplifying the Problem

I have become a frequent watcher, due to a major schedule change. Don't tell anyone, but I even program the DVR to record the Shows. My first point is that I am probably not the atypical Dr. Phil demographic. I decided to sign up for this site because I have become incited (THE GOOD KIND) to respond to some of the issues that get addressed on the show. What I was planning to write, has changed in the time it took me to sign up and log in and read some of the responses from the shows readers.

What changed me was reading so many persons, "EASY" fixes. I guess I should have expected the NRA to show up. That was inevitable. Of course the NRA could take up an entire season of shows, let alone these message board postings, however, I did not really want to take that walk at this time. To read that the trouble starts at home is just so profound as to be virtually meaningless. Of course there was at least one writer who did not actually say it but I am sure that he could use a couple of shows perhaps prior to him being the next shooter! "The Pledge of Allegiance" is another, that of course will potentialy cause more shootings than less. I am not unpatriotic at all. but legislating prayers and pledges in a school room full of impressionable youngsters is so much anti-American, that I do not understand why that group cannot see that. I do not need a school room full of teachers many of whom will be unknown to me at least for awhile preaching social mores. They should, obviously be taught about mores in a sociology class, and then they will be Free Americans capable of making a responsible, educated decision. A high quality education will, however, yield so much less crime, including  rage shootings that there is really the answer to so many opf our problerms. I am not a fan of Government wasting funds with over inflated programs that need to go through so much bureaucracy that notonly to the costs get out of hand but the programs themselves change from their original intentions. HOWEVER if there was any program in America that if necessary needs to have what ever amount of EDUCATION thrown at it you wil see a dramatic decrease in so many of hte problems that we face, and if and when one then really reviews the cost benefit analysis they willbe surprised to see how much money they save from the benefits that will reduce the huge spending in other areas.

I orioginally wanted to write about the "profiling" issue. While I do agree inherently in no profiling and I still lean towards that for now, I must admit that when it was first mentioned I did pause for a moment befoer I discarded the idea. If a profiling system is to prove succesful, the only way it could be administered would be with each school having a person or persons with the credentials that would thus require, i.e., DoctorClient type of confidentiality. Phsychiatrists, even specially trained Counselors could under the guise of student counseling, something that goes on at school anyway, just not efficiently enough. Remember in my education picture Teachers would rank among the highest paid people. Supporting personnel would be porfessional. They could come from outsuide theparticular school and candidates for the position would take on multiple schools even on the side of their regular positions. Imagine a Dr. Phil avaialble for m,andatory meetings with each student covering issues from typical Guidance Counseling to serious phsychiatric and/or medical treatments for those that have any one of a myriad of symptoms or problems. Since it would be for everyone nobody would be left out. It willnot result in "finger pointing," or affect the student hierarchy.
I am aware that what I am proposing is an astronomical undertaking. But it is an undertaking that I am sure would solve so many of the problems in this country , that the return will come from what we do not have to spend on other arenas, not to mention the positive we will gain by having the absolute best educational system in the world, and the end product of that willbe what these kids (now) will be able to acheive over the course of their lives! Why no one thinks that this avenue will turn these kids into the abslute best people working within every endeavor!

To summarize, while I may have been being a bit coy with the Dr. Phil in every school, certainly a Dr Phil lookalike (with a nice full head of hair/ No take that back, He should be bald, seriously, it lends a certain air (That's Air not Hair about him.) handling say, 3-5 schools within a widespread area, so that they are exposed to a good cross section of any given region. Finally, I realize their will always be a person who suffers from some ailment that we just can not predict, and the probability that we do not get 100% solutions . But I refuse to believe that we will not solve so many of our problems through education that that is the direction we should be looking at to solve this and so many other of our problems...

Cure the problem not the symptom

I don't believe gun control or locking schools is the solution. I believe we need to focus on the real issues in our schools. There is a lot of pressure on our teens in school because we have given them too much control. In management they call this the tail is wagging the dog. We need to take back the authority in schools. I believe a good step for our schools would be to consider all girl and all boy schools. Education is not the main focus in our schools. I work very close with my teens school and actually aided in the institution of a uniform policy. My next step is to push for gender based schooling. The focus needs to be on education. This will adjust the mind set of our youth. the priority of most teens is dating and socializing. The pressure and emotional strain of relationships is overwhelming to a lot of teens. They make bad decisions that lead to more bad decisions. I have spent hours talking to my eighteen year old daughter and explained she is not ready for a family and that school is her stepping stone to being able to provide for her family when she is ready. She is not dating in high school and knows the importance of learning. She tried dating and found her grades dropping and after the break up looked back and saw the distractions involved. She now plans on going to an all girl college.
