Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

YES! We are all needed to be responsible!

Quote From: hopeweaver

We all try to make sense of these nightmares and identify causes.  When we face the fact that children learn what they are taught maybe we can move forward.  Being a child in this culture (and it is becoming a worldwide cult -ure) and observing the adults can only lead to one conclusion.  If you have a problem, violence will solve it.  Two countries disagree so we have a war and kill one another.  The country with the most horrible weapons and the most soldiers wins.  When there is a 'bad guy' send in the police and shoot him.  I have never known a child who wished to grow up and become the 'bad guy'.  Of course we have sick children.  Look at what we teach!!  We can continue to blame parents, schools, the children themselves but the fact remains that we are all responsible. The past allowed us to 'spin' our stories so that we were always the heros and right.  This is 2007 and every child has access to information on a day to day basis.  Shock and Awe.  We are getting plenty of that!  We must wake up and live the values we hope to offer the future.  When we decide to do this, it will require a lot of work from each of us. Today is a good day to begin.

You have eloquently stated the problem!

It is hypocrisy and lunacy to believe that killing spreads democracy.   It is ANTI-SOCIAL.

It is delusional to believe that bullies (wealthy nations, thugs at school) know what is "best."

If EACH family looked at its own thinking/behavior (violent or socially responsible?), we could begin change.    If EVERY family examined its own violent speech/actions, we could trace where this originates.

We are on a socially irresponsible and destructive trajectory, now.   Let's all stop the nonsense.

Let us look at what is going on in our homes.   Is it yelling, hitting, disrespect?    Or is it LISTENING?

STOP violent speech, violent music, violent behavior, in and out of our homes.   Let's just STOP IT!

Remember when play/sports was fun?

Quote From: anonup

I don't remember the exact percentages, but back during WWII only around 15% of soldiers could actually shoot 'the enemy', they had only practiced shooting targets.  After WWII they starting training soldiers using human silhouettes instead of plain targets - the percentage of soldiers in the Korean war (conflict??) who could shoot at a human increased dramatically - something like 80% (again, I don't remember the exact percentages).  Now - kids playing games like HALO-(any version), Manhunt (any version) and many others, are shooting 3-d images of people, get the sound, and bloody visual effects etc...And - they do not have the discipline that is drilled into people in the military.

So - they have the developed the ability, but without the judgement, and many of them are isolated and picked on....obviously not all young people who play violent games/watch high levels of violence will be violent, but obviously young people can and do shoot others in cold blood....

Halo is rated M, basically what would be an NC-17 rating if it were a movie - how many years has your son been playing the Halo series?  I'm not saying he would be prone to any violent behavior, just pointing out that you, who seem to be a concerned/involved parent didn't take the rating into consideration, what about those kids whose parents don't pay attention at all??

As the mother of two grown sons,  I am happy that they loved being outside more than sitting in front of a television screen, indoors.   (That was not an option, anyway!)  They loved sports (water polo, swimming, baseball, wrestling, biking, skiing); and they still do!

They are UCLA graduates with excellent jobs.   They are physically fit and kind men.

Our whole family enjoys outdoor sports, together.   We bike, kayak, bowl in the winter----there is so much more to life than watching a tv set or video game.  Every season has different offerings.

Parents, you need to stay in shape, too!    Get involved DOING things with your kids.

Passive play is making kids fat and diabetic!    There is so much to be gained by doing team and individual sports.   They learn to work together, they develop healthy bodies and minds.   It is fun!    Try it!

BE HEALTHY TOGETHER!

you mean cop bashing??

Quote From: carey325

I'm from Wisconsin, not near Crandon.  Married to a police administrator.  I am just waiting for the cop basing.  You can't predict everything, please do not use this young man's issues to be a platform to bash all those officers that put their lives on the line, whose families miss holidays with them  because they are out there protecting us from the law breakers, PLEASE.  This is one person, one young person.  He does nto represent the many officers that have dedicated their lives to this profession.

And on that same note, please remember this young man has a family.  They do not deserve to be persecuted.

And the victims families also will need time to heal, please allow them that.  This is a tough, terrible world we live in.  Let's not make this harder on everyone than we have to.

Thank you.

Try to stay positive.  You should not be waiting for any cop bashing. Nobody has once bashed any other part of the police force or sheriffs department. The only negativity I have heard was that the officer did not have to have psychological testing before being hired. WOW! That DOES deserve some negativity if you ask me. I COULD NOT BELIEVE that there are police departments in this country that will hire an officer without psychological testing prior to employment. Where I come from even FireFighters need to pass a psych eval. before being hired. What I think is the saddest part of all, is that it took something this tragic for the state to say..."Hmmm..guess we better start evaluationg these future officers better" Now that is sad!!

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: ldhkah

I am not an expert, but if I were your child I would leave immediately and transfer to another school. Sounds extrememe, but what the other student is/was doing is extreme also.
You need to have your daughter go to her academic advisor and if not there, straight to the dean of students. If that doesn't work. See if you can obtain the students full, legal name along with his state and county of residence. Most states have a public website that shows all existing arrest records. You may be able to gain support or ligitimacy if you can provide a track record. If all else fails - go to your local media - campus newspaper etc. As for the instructor passing on your daughter's email message - I'd forward it straight to the deans office!

Thinking? Or slogans?

In Canada our homicide  rate is far lower than in the U.S.  People kill people here, too.  But since guns aren't 'at hand' in every household, we have to kill the hard way.

We have to strangle them, or bludgeon them, or drown them in a bathtub, or electrcute them, or stab them.

These other forms of murder are rather labor-intensive.  Their other disadvantage is that the target often manages to get away.  Sometimes the target is pretty strong, and can fight off the would-be killer.

Sometimes the target can see the attacker coming, and outrun him/her, especially if the weapon, say a big club for example, is rather heavy and slows the attacker down.

But Americans love efficiency above all things.  A gun is much more efficient killing tools than any other weapon. Especially if you are a coward.    You can shoot from hiding.  You can shoot someone who is running away.  You can shoot another human being from a car, and then drive away, so that you are at no risk at all .  You can shoot people with an automatic weapon, and spray down twenty or thirty of them if they are closely grouped, such as waiting at a bus stop, or sitting in a classroom.

And your children are dying in classrooms , and in home accidents in which the child thought the family guns were just toys, and wanted  to play 'bang, bang" ,  just like they see people doing on TV.

To the argument that easy access to guns is essential to one's personal safety, I can only point out the obvious:  if that were the case, then the U.S. murder rate should be lower than ours.  But it's not, is it?

And so although the geniuses who belong to the ARA keep chanting that guns don't kill people, nevertheless you people are dying at a pretty impressive rate.  You do love your killing tools!

WRONG!!!!!

Quote From: readmore

The Second Amendment provides for the STATES to have the right to a militia (armed), as a check against a tyrannical central federal government.    It says nothing about individuals owning guns, although the INTERPRETATION of the law has been to provide for individual gun ownership.

Lobbyists for the powerful NRA have had a role there.   Those of us who have kids, but no guns in the house, have one less thing to worry about.    We all know the statistics of guns in homes that were used in killing family members, intentionally or accidentally.   We know guns can be misused---and they are, often.

Those of us who teach history and government are required to address the "Bill of Rights," as part of the study of the U.S. Constitution.   Maybe the students' parents need a refresher course!

The Bill of Rights gives rights to the individual. Freedom of speech is not just for someone who happens to have a job with the press. The second amendment gives people the right to own guns. Because the militia is made up of individuals and we have the God given right to self defense. And self presevation is the number one law of nature. The founding fathers felt that it was so very important is the reason it was second to speech. And it is not about duck hunting or sport shooting.

If you teach history, you need to go back and study what the founding fathers wrote. If you don't know this any better than you do, then you need to not teach history. The Bill of Rights were not written as what we could or could not have. It was what the government could not prevent us from having. The liberals have perverted this idea. And grown it way past what the founding fathers intended.

Your in my thoughts and prayers

Hello, My name is Jackie. I am 27 years old. My heart goes out to the victims & families of this and any other school shootings.  I was in high school when Columbine happened and as part of our grade 12 English class we wrote letters to the students of Columbine to express our feelings. I was also involved in a store robbery. I was at work at a grocery store and a robber came and opened fire on the Brinks guard who was taking our sales from the night before.  Luckily no one was hurt. Our store manager ran and locked the doors so the robber wouldn't take us hostage.  I was outside right before it happened and I saw the robber pull up and the getaway car parked.  I don't think it really hit any of us until we heard the shots go off. It was my first time around gunfire.  We were all interviewed by the police.  The shots sounded like firecrackers going off or a car back firing.  Now every time I hear a loud bang I jump because of this day.

ON TARGET!

Quote From: katlik2laf

I am a school psychometrist and contract with several schools so I am all over the county. The other day I was testing a senior and we got to talking. He shared with me that he had been arrested twice. He volunteered the information that once was for shooting a girl. I ask why he would do that. He told me that he and a friend were walking around town shooting at things(he had a .22 and the other guy had a BB gun). A girl walked out of her house and his friend said,"Can you hit her?" So he shot her in the leg. I asked him if he was sorry. He said yeah(pantomimed his hands behind his back in handcuffs)when the police arrested me. He said that if she just hadn't cried and called the police, everything would have been fine. He showed no remorse for having shot the girl, only that he got caught. To me, this is a prime example of a kid who could kill.

Kathi

WOW!   Your comments are right on target!

Do you see what you just said:   "Can you hit her?"  is a sociopathic challenge to hit a random target!

This is EXACTLY what video games challenge!    There is no remorse, guilt, or conscience involved.

People are objects, targets.

Shooting is a game now of deadly accuracy, a dehumanizing experience.   It is worse than war because it has no purpose or pretext.    It is shooting for shooting's sake.

We wonder why we are where we are?   Parents who permit this garbage in their homes are unhealthy.

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: readmore

How many more school shootings will occur before we wake up?

I am an educator in California.  Ever since the Columbine shootings, I made the personal decision to have my classroom door LOCKED when class is in session.  Why? To PREVENT armed intruders from bursting into my classroom!  Often, they hope to find the first (random) door that is not locked!

Do you teach your children to wear a seatbelt, to prevent death in a car accident?

Do you teach your children to wear a condom if they  prematurely participate in sexual activity, to prevent unwanted pregnancy or STD's?

Do you teach your children to not get into a car with a drunk or stoned driver?

Did you know that Israel suffered NO PLANE HIJACKINGS for decades by securing the cockpits?

(We could have PREVENTED 9/11, if we had had the same common sense in this country.)

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF "CURE."

Something as simple as locking a classroom door when in session is such a small, but smart, thing to do.  In the event of a fire, we can all still LEAVE class.  Locked doors PREVENT INTRUDERS.

We cannot secure every hallway or every room; but we can ceratinly secure classrooms in session.

Until we unravel the "mysteries"  of violence in this country, we will have to take OBVIOUS PRECAUTIONS.

The criminal profiler, Pat Brown, tried to speak about the "disaffected" teens and their early childhhood upbringings.  ARE PARENTS TEACHING THEIR KIDS THAT EVERY LIFE IS SACRED?  No.

Dr. Phil is a behaviorist.  He does not dwell on parental models, but he does state that "children learn what they live."  Let's admit it:  guns have been a part of American society for hundreds of years.  But the last decade has shown a DRAMATIC increase in school shootings.  Let's pay attention to what is happening in our society in the last decade.  Pat Brown deserves an UNINTERRUPTED HOUR to share her thoughts on this subject. We all know very well how our kids witness violence EVERY day, in their homes and on the screens, in their music and in the media.  This appetite for violence is spawning it.

Until Brown gets to speak more fully, I will continue to "lock down" my classroom, when in session, so that I do not have to phone parents and ask them to come to school and claim their son/daughter, who is lying in a pool of blood on my floor.

hello.....i agree with you so much it hurts!!i want to share something with you too!! when csb dropped my grand daughter off once again, because they were without a place to put her. i have always been the one that they would drop off all my gr/kids to. this perticular time,my poor little grand daughter was being sexually abused by her step father. i had to take her to school, because she had missed so much time already in school, that she was told if she didn't come to school she would fail!!so i took her. i went in and talked to the principle, and told him what was going on with her, her life, and that man had nothing nice to say abut the whole situation. he more or less told me that he has so many kids that have thier own stories, on what is going on in their lives, he couldn't keep up!! when i called him again on this and told him that i didn't feel sending kati to school was a good idea, he jumped all over me and told me that he has heard enough about this little firl and he's sick of it!! here in toledo, ohio, csb does not  do the best of a job protecting kids that are being abused!! even though this principle knew what was going on, he told me he didn't want to hear anymore about it!!!i just couldn't believe my ears!! his father was the principle ,at the same school system over 30 yrs before him!! he had a good idea what he was in for when he took this position! to hear him say that, just broke my heart, because when a little gril who has lost her mother, and then to be sexually abused by the step father, because no one would believe me when i told them he was doing it!!now someone tell me, please, who do kids like this turn to, if they don't have a mom,or dad, and the step dad is in prison for molesting her, and they (csb) will not let me, the only grand parent she has in her life!!her step dad's parents never cared about any of his kids, because the mother let her dad molest her kids too!!it keeps going on and on, and when they finally get someone who wants to take a homeless child in,(my gr/daughter) they will not let her come to me, because they are affraid that they wuill be found guilty of not listening to me in the first place. if they would of listened, this little girl never would of even been molested!!the other 3 gr/kids and her were put into a foster home, behind my back, and put him in prison and didn't even call me when they did that!!it was my daughter who passed away leaving 5 kids behind. i had the oldest, and wanted the others, but because the step dad, while in prison, still had his rights on what happened to these kids!!now tell me, how do they get away with stuff like that???how could he possibly have any rights to these poor little kids? my gr/son, who is 13, already wants to quit school. he's was kicked out 2 times before a month went by that they started the school year!!the foster parents are doing nothing, and i mean nothing, but taking the money our wonderful systme gives them and doesn't even have to take them for couseling, because she doesn't believe in it!!omg, how can this be? everyone taqlks abuot making someone responcible for kids, i think we need to go a little further than that, when it comes to all kids!! yes, i believe it is up to the parents to teach their kids right from wrong, and it would also be som much better, if they would put god back into our schools, but it would also be nice if we had a system, that was really there to help these kids!!!i was more than willing to take these kids after my daughter's death!!some reason, omg, for some reason csb wouldn't allow them to!!if i raised the oldest of the 5 almost all of her life, there certainly wasn't anything bad about me going on!!!that's what the system does though, point fingers!! the only ones that suffer from them pointing fingers are the kids!!i could go on and on, why shootings are going on at schools, but i had to share why one of my gr/kids might be on the news for doing something similar!!they have no desire to do good, and no one encourages them to be good and nice to other children. when my daughter passed away, the child i was raising was going to a privaate school, where one little boy got mad at her, and said, "well, at least i have a mother". then the school would call me and tell me they don't know why, but she is having problems this year at school!!! i wonder why?? kids need to be taught love, and how to show love and also show respect!!i believe it should start at home, and continue at school. it's hard for teachers to take all the responciblities of a child, but if they see that a child is in trouble, they need to do something about it, not complain that he has too many other kis to worry about!! i was taught not only at home about god, but also at school, and i do know there were not any school shootings going on back then!!if the kids don't have parents, who is going to take the blame for them??certainly not our system that puts kids in foster homes, where nothing is taught. they don't do check ups on the kids, and  when people call and complain that bad things are happening in a foster home, they tell you, the case is closed!!how could a case be closed when there are still many problems they wish to ignore?? now i'm grasping at straws, but there wouldn't be so much violence going on is our schools, if everyone did their share!! that means parents, teachers, doctors and lawyers!!,  it has to start somewhere!! these young kids today, really need a lot more guidence!! i also feel very sorry for everyone involved in these shootings, and my prayers are with you all too!!they should have something similar to neighborhood watches, everyone, take care of everyone who needs help!!we need to get more involved!! i am willing to do it, i just want the chance!! i hope not to offend anyone, but if i do, oh well, just be gald you don't have any of these problems!!
