Early Sunday morning in Crandon, a small Wisconsin logging town, 20-year-old deputy sheriff Tyler Peterson went on a shooting rampage killing six people and critically wounding another before authorities fatally shot him. A part-time police officer, Peterson fired thirty rounds of ammunition on his ex-girlfriend and a group of friends who had gathered for pizza and movies to celebrate homecoming weekend. Who was Tyler Peterson, and what drove him to murder six people in cold blood? What is the profile of a mass murderer, and does he fit the description? How could Peterson have slipped through the system to become a law enforcement officer, and how do we keep it from happening again? Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.* From the 1999 Columbine massacre to the nation's deadliest shooting rampage in history at Virginia Tech last April, mass shootings in America continue to draw world scrutiny. Be there when Dr. Phil asks the tough questions. If it's happening now, Dr. Phil is gonna talk about it now! Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

The Second Amendment provides for the STATES to have the right to a militia (armed), as a check against a tyrannical central federal government.    It says nothing about individuals owning guns, although the INTERPRETATION of the law has been to provide for individual gun ownership.

Lobbyists for the powerful NRA have had a role there.   Those of us who have kids, but no guns in the house, have one less thing to worry about.    We all know the statistics of guns in homes that were used in killing family members, intentionally or accidentally.   We know guns can be misused---and they are, often.

Those of us who teach history and government are required to address the "Bill of Rights," as part of the study of the U.S. Constitution.   Maybe the students' parents need a refresher course!

It has been a very long time since I have studied this.  So the powerful  NRA have misrepresented American citizens!   I believe that you are right on target.  Students' parents, and all Americans need to know what the Second Amendment provides for.

I almost became Tyler Peterson

Dear Dr. Phil viewers:

I watched the Dr. Phil show in horror as I learned about these American school shootings. When the survivors of  Collumbine were interviewed by Dr. Phil, they all said that they remember the incident anytime they see another school shooting in the news.

Well, these events trigger my own sensibilities for another reason. Of my total time being alive on God's earth, my high school years were by far the toughest. These school shootings remind me of the darkest period of my life.

What prevented me from committing a rampage killing like the one Tyler Peterson did  was that I had an angel in my life at the time. Her name was Orna. She reached out to me when nobody else gave a damn.

Her profound influence connected with my sense of loniliness and desperation. If it weren't for Orna, I might have committed the same sort of rampage killing that Tyler Peterson did.

I like to take the gifts that Orna gave me and pay it forward. I am now a Christian with a caring heart and strong morals. I like to spread love whenever I can. Perhaps, such a subtle act of kindness can change someone's day.

Also, the United States of America isn't the only country where school shootings occur. In 1989, a man stormed into a francophone engineering school and slaughtered plenty of innocent women. Just last year, a gunman bombarded Dawson College in Montreal and killed this beautiful woman who had high aspirations in life. I get sad whenever I think about these incidents, such as now.

Just last week, I made a donation to Canada's Coalition for Gun Control so that we can save lives instead of wasting them. I resent organizations such as the N.R.A. who believe it's peoples' God given right to own guns. What they don't consider is that owning a gun is a privlidge, just like driving a car. I'd like to see countries such as Canada and the United States take greater measures of taking guns away from residential communities. My values for pro-gun control rapidly increased when Ottawa sportscaster Brian Smith was shot at a parking of his job more than ten years ago. While it may be possible to murder other people by other means, taking guns away from future offenders will unquestionably save more lives.

Well, I'll leave it at that. My heart goes out to the friends and families of the victims of all sorts of gun violence. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank my friend Orna again for the profound impact that she had on my life. Thanks to her, I can now have be a positive influence in the lives of other lonely and depressed people.

And once again, society must get pro-active in taking guns away from people who aren't supposed to have them.

Sincerely Yours,

Fred T.

And it goes well beyond the Bill of Rights...

Quote From: longwalker

The Bill of Rights gives rights to the individual. Freedom of speech is not just for someone who happens to have a job with the press. The second amendment gives people the right to own guns. Because the militia is made up of individuals and we have the God given right to self defense. And self presevation is the number one law of nature. The founding fathers felt that it was so very important is the reason it was second to speech. And it is not about duck hunting or sport shooting.

If you teach history, you need to go back and study what the founding fathers wrote. If you don't know this any better than you do, then you need to not teach history. The Bill of Rights were not written as what we could or could not have. It was what the government could not prevent us from having. The liberals have perverted this idea. And grown it way past what the founding fathers intended.

First of all, I want to thank Dr Phill and his staff from not allowing the show to degrade into a 'blame the gun' thing.  A gun, like an automobile, is a mechanical object, incapable of any action without human intervention.  So, shootings of any kind are the result of the action of a person, a human, and the show focused on that FACT.  Good Job!  One of the guests did begin spouting numbers involving guns, but was washed over by more focused attention.  The whole gun thing boils down to education.  It is a Proven fact that 'Bans' on things do not work.  Bans on Alcohol, Drugs, and Prostitution, come to mind.  Just think of the education and councelling on the misuse of drugs could be put in place with just a fraction ot the money spent on so-called drug enforcement.  As for shootings in schools; proper education in the use and dangers of fire arms would go a long way to end it.  Also, concealed carry of weapons (CCW) by school officials willing to do so, would simply put an end to this nonsense.  Consider the Swiss where almost every house has a gun.  No public shootings there.  Common sense says do not mess with him/them, they have a gun!  FBI crime number clearly show that states that have on-demand, CCW laws have significantly lower crime rates that those that don't.   I could go on, but I suggest you read the book 'More Guns, Less Crime'.  His base is the huge number of cases where the bad guy finds himself looking down the barrel of the victim's gun and wisely flees.  These cases Never make the evening news or the print, but do happen.  AS Jack Webb like to say : Just the facts.....

The "Bill of Rights"  is not a list of priorities, from first to last.  All amendments were created to address what had not been articulated in the previous Articles of Confederation.   The right to due process is equally important as the right to free speech.   State militias are not more important than a citizen's right to a jury trial.   Don't you agree?

I have already studied and satisfied the California requirement for teachers to thoroughly understand and support the Constitution.  I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies.

Have you actually read the Constitution, the "Bill of Rights", or the earlier Articles of Confederation?

Any library can provide you with copies.

The founding fathers failed to address citizens' rights in the original Articles of Confederation.   That is one reason they were pressed to write the later Constitution, with its "Bill of Rights."

I am very comfortable with my historical knowledge.    Are you also licensed to teach in California?

Thanks for reminding us to READ MORE!   The Constitution is available for everyone who cares to read the original document, word for word.    It is very explicit.   People love to argue its meanings; but it is written in plain English.  Broad interpretations will continue to fuel argument.   I hope everyone reads it!

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

First my deep sorrow for the event , to the families and to every one concerned , That said .... I can see two mayor problems that need to be addressed , one the proliferation of hand guns to the masses , it can be argued that is the person the killer not the machine ( gun ) ,but, would there be difficulty in acquiring the gun ,the would be killer ,would perhaps think of another day ,which would entice him to look for help , and carnage comparatively reduced  . Second Is, the social fabric ,specifically the brake-down of the family ,incurred by the high cost of living , large percent of families are required to have two incomes to acquire the niceties that society wants now days , leaving children and young people with basic needed love, proper discipline and moral education that can be supplied by a one income family .... I can't see a return to those days , families just don't have the time or knowledge on how to accomplish this properly , I believe a public school mandatory moral behavior course ( not religious ) but teachings of moral laws and society behavior , to fill the discrepancy that home ignores , and hopefully we can bring up a new society of responsible and caring adults .

are you serious?

In reading some of these messages I see that so many are defending the right to own guns. I personally am against it however most if not all of these kids where under age and/or obtained the gun illegally. It's a joke to even bring up the right to bear arms. Last I read it was illegal to own a gun under the age of 18 and without a proper permit, much less carry them on school campus.

Are you familiar with "The Ten Commandments"?

One of them is an order (Commandment):  DO NOT KILL.

No one murdering kids in a school is exercizing their "God-given right to self defense."

I cannot recall the last time the evening news covered  a "self-defense" shooting, with the exception of police officers doing their job.

Murderers are criminals, using guns to kill innocent, defenseless children and teachers.

They invade schools because they know the school is filled with un-armed, innocent people.

Killers have no conscience, like any sociopath; and they are not part of any state militia.   These killers do not have any right to carry or use guns at those schools.

I wonder how many of these killers contemplate that Commandment, as they load their guns?

10/12 Homecoming Shooting

Quote From: enydan

At the risk of sounding like I live in La La Land, I am going to just put this idea out on the table.  A few years ago on the Discovery Channel? I believe, I saw a documentary about how Russia was investing in research of psychic abilities.  It told how people were tested and those with abilities further trained to use their natural abilities.  How did they use them?  They were told to practice using their mental abilities to send messages.  Could they make someone ill?  Could they induce a heart attack?  Or some other illnesses?  I remember that the key to it was in the vibratory levels that the psychics were able to reach.  These vibrations were measurable with equipment, I guess similar to machines that monitor brain waves, etc.  The vibratory patterns of the most successful psychics were matched by designing equipment could pinpoint the right  level of vibration and it could be increased to be more potent.  So, what is my point?  I wonder how far these experiments went.  I wonder if over these past 20 or so years, the use of sending "signals" that are "negative", creating depression, anxiety, sickness, etc. have become the weapon that is afftecting our youth.    What do you think?

Hmmmm.  I had to think about this one for a while.  And I'm not all that sure I completely understand what you're suggesting.

So, what exac tly are your suggesting that these these psychic vibrations could be used for---Predictions?  If yes, then predicutions of what exactly--predictions of those who are likelty to resort to violent behavior, or more like predictions of clinical depression or anxiety?  Don't we already have resources available to use to diagnose depression and anxiety.  So what would be the reason for consulting with psychics then?  Because like Dr. Phil pointed out on his show, LOTS of people, even high school students, get dumped every day of the year and they don't go around lashing out at society and killing others simply because they were depressed or anxious about being dumped.  So how is it that you envision psychics would contribute?

I think it would be a waste to invest a good portion of law enforcement resources and depleting hard-to-get funding on machines that measure cerebral vibrations if those vibrations can't accurately and validly predict something valuable such as who is most likely to lash out and use violence to hurt of kill others.

I am all for using whatever resources we have at our disposal to try to predict who is most likely to violently lash out at society.  But I don't know if I would support the use of psychic abilities to measure brain vibrations if it can't accurately tell us anything valuable about those vibrations.  We (society as a whole) already have current resources available to us to pinpoint those who are depressed, anxious, sick, mentally unbalanced, etc.  But it doesn't exactly mean anyone pinpointed is necessarily going to kill others simply because they're depressed or anxious.  So what could psychics possibly add that current resources don't already do (albeit not perfectly).

Why are these types of killings happening?

All we hear is "Why?"  but, I don't think anyone is willing to state the reason "why" these types of things in our homes, schools, colleges, work places are really happening.  It all started when we stopped caring about others and were "conditioned" to think only of ourselves.

Our children are being forced to grow up too fast by dressing them as adults when they are only 10 years old or younger, thinking we have to give them "everything" they want regardless of whether it is good for them or not.  What has happened to our parents?  When did they stop being in control of their children.   By the time they are 12 or 13 years old a lot of them have already experienced everything I did by the time I was 20!  What do they have to look forward to?

An example of what the computer can do is as follows:  I called up Google Search Engine to find a picture of a young girls face to use as a model for a picture I was painting.  When I typed in "Picture of a young girl", I was shocked and appalled at the very first Item on the page.  It read "HOW TO F--K A YOUNG GIRL".  I didn't ask for that, why was it there?  I immediately erased Google from my computer.  I know that other search engines probably have this same thing...why?  How often does this happen to a child when they are searching for something for their homework?  Don't you think a young boy, etc., would look to see, and then go and find a girl to see if it really works or what it feels like?

How can we protect the minds of our young people with things like that out there so easily available, even when they are not looking for them.

Mind Control , violence, sex, drugs....without returning to our days where modesty is not a dirty word,  parents are in control again, children have an opportunity to be children, and the ACLU is abolished and buried, our children will continue to seek their thrills when and where they can.  Sometimes this may end up with the murder of that child they attack.

WHO IS MAKING OUR CHILDREN "DUMB AND DUMBER?"  Stealing their innocence, I think we know the answer to that question already, but most people just don't want to admit that 30 years ago a gross injustice was done to our youth, they lost the ability to understand what life is supposed to be like.  Now their children are suffering from that injustice.

ITS NOT JUST GUNS THAT ARE PUT INTO THE HANDS OF OUR YOUTH OR ANYONE ELSE CAUSING THE PROBLEMS.....IT IS THAT GOD HAS BEEN PUT ON A SHELF AND WE CONTINUE TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF FACING THE FACT THAT WE HAVE LOST OUR FAITH IN ANYTHING BUT OURSELVES.  WE CANNOT FIX THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT INCLUDING GOD!  I PRAY THAT GOD HAS NOT TURNED HIS BACK ON AMERICA YET!
