Quote From: renagade

First of all the money would be the last thing you do because everything else has to be in place.

Why do you want to open a bookstore???  Do you love books.  Remember one of the reasons people enjoy having a business is that it's fun - that's right you should have fun at work - get paid for having fun!!!

There are two things that kill a business - owners that think they know everything/try to tell their employees how to do their jobs And hiring the wrong type of people.

Have you thought about the internet - plenty of opportunities abound, I myself am developing a website.

Do you mind giving me your email.

Rog

i have no problem giving emails out, as they aren't primary... my email is bronzebabee@excite.com... i Have thought about the Internet as a business, but not sure how to do that either... the bookstore idea i had was my Boldest fantasy to date...I am a book worm supreme.  any advice from ANYONE would be welcomed... thanks ya'll...

What do you do?

Well I have gotten myself in a rut! Origanally I am from Las Vegas, born and raised. I lived there for 30 yrs. I had own my own business for 3yrs, but due to a divorce, and just wanting to claim my life back, I walked away from it all. I wound up with a good job, not the highest paying, but pretty comfortable. In 2001 due to my children, I up and moved to Kansas, sight unseen. Since I have moved here I have went from one job to another, and havent even seen half of my earnings that I made 5 yrs ago. Im just sick over it. I cant seem to even hold my head up anymore. I dont want to go to work, Im just miserable. I have been wanting to open my own business again, and I know that there could be a number of things that this town hasnt even hit on certain markets. So for the last 3 yrs I have been on the internet looking for grants, and all I have seem to have done is get ripped off of the little money that I do make. Its come to the point of , I just need help. I have never asked for help in my 36 yrs of life, and I know that I cant keep stressing like I am. I dont want this stress to affect me or my family anymore. If anyone has any suggestions of what I should do, Im taking the biggest step I have ever takin in my life, IM ASKING FOR HELP!!!!

Career

Hi

I know my Career goals eventually.... I'm 24, I just got accepted in to University starting February for Bachelors of Accounting. I want to work as an Accountant, and in a few years go to England for 5 years, then come back and open my own practice.

My only concern is i've only worked for 2 yrs - was three days a week - as an Office Assistant and for 8 months as a Data Entry operator. My lack of experience is a concern, my last job didn't pay my benefits he was supposed to and I left the first job coz i had a fall out with the lady in the Office, (I was young and stupid). How do I get past this, it rattles my confidence when getting a job. I'd love to work Full time and study Part time for a few years to get the money and experience.

Thanks,

Deb

Retail Hell!

Hi, I am an MBA student with an undergrad in Marketing (Business). I took a job at a large fashion retailer in the local mall. I have sold probably 400 Gap Cards for this company. My dilimia is this: My work schedule is limited (part-time) due to my school commitment, but last week two girls got promoted to keyholders for the store.  They never sale any store cards. They do work in other areas, such as, visual merchandising.  They are younger than me with no education. Should I be mad? First of all, I  know I don't have to go those steps if I want to go into management. i.e. sales associate, key holder, assistant manager, associate manager, head of store. I could easily apply for a management position when one comes availabe whether with this store or another or even another company and totally bypass this keyholder crap, but my feelings are a little hurt.  I did receive a merit raise for exceeding store card sales.  Honestly, I would be a little embarrassed to be a "keyholder" at my age (mid 30s), but the management acts like that's the natural way to move up in the company.  The management is just bitter that it took them years to get into management (6-9 years), but they seem to not understand that having an education is "supposed" to make you move up quicker.  It's like they want to punish me like they were punished and they are sort of jealous of my education.  Not to mention, the head of store gave me this long speech of how she has hit so many road blocks in her career and that a lot of people do not work in the field they studied (she has a early education degree).  Some advice please!  Thank you

Are all MBA's cry babies like you.  You seem to think that just having this degree automatically puts you in the drivers seat for management.  Where's your experience selling, helping customers with their problems, stocking, ordering, knowning what's going to be 'in' for next year.

Personally I worked with a co-worker who had their degree and thought just like you - they were useless.  Hardley did any work and grumbled when things went wrong.  Thankfully they left 3 weeks later to finish their degree.

If the only thing that you can claim is that you sold all those cards and nonething else - all you deserve is the bonus you got.

What do I want to be when I grow up?

I am 36 years old and have had at least 15-20 jobs in my time. None of which have been extremely satisfying to me. I cannot find that passion within me that most people have that puts them in a career of their dreams. Finances have always been a struggle for ma and I deserve to be content, not rich, just content. Has anyone else been here and gotten out of it? What makes one know that that want to be a doctor, lawyer, hairdresser, nurse, teacher etc. HELP!!!!

Need advice on career (event/party/wedding planning)

Can somebody please advise me on how I can enter the event/party/wedding planning industry?

After working in unfulfilling admin support jobs for over a decade, I have just about had it...

I think this career could be fun, and I really think I have the organizational ability to be successful -- but how do I break in and get my first paying job?

My mom's friend's daughter is an event planner and she had to take some state test.  Do I really need to take a test to become certified and if so, how do I go about training and preparing for this test and starting this new career?

If anybody is working in this exciting career, I'd like to hear from you.  Or if there are others considering this career path, if you have any helpful advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

answers you or not but I have been there.  I have had as many jobs as you have.  Each one of my jobs I always tried to do my best and help the business succeed - that was the way I was brought up.  However it seemed that the owners only wanted me to 'shut up, sit down, and do what your told'.  I however was in my area.  I then asked my self what do I really like to do remembering that

years earlier I had seen a show where successful people 'loved what they did and had fun at it'.

Then the internet started to really bloom.  Then a friend of mine kept asking me questions about

a certain thing that I had studied about and I kept giving him answers.

In time and after reading this particular book where I found out where I was wrong - I realized what

I wanted to do.  Part of that is almost done and the other part is nearing completion.

I hope this answers you somewhat - what do you have fun doing - that you can be paid for.

Career Goals

Quote From: lh2000

You can set a goal to be happy but that is really not much of a goal.  The problem is people that chase happiness for a living can easily turn into instant gratification junkies and never seem to get what they want for more then a very short period of time.

If you worked for a goal for 4 years then you have not fallen into that trap but you need to be careful you don’t.

Sometimes when I have a goal and live my life purposefully to achieve that goal when I get close to that goal I start feeling unfulfilled.  The problem is not the circumstances that surround my life at that point in time (which job, where I live, who I spend time with) it is because I’m about ready to run out of the purpose I had been living for.  Living purposefully is very fulfilling for me and it is hard for me to be happy when I’m not.

The thing is, most of us have several purposes in life but we tend to focus on one or two and sometimes lose focus all together (especially during times of transition).  I suggest you look at what the primary purposes are in your life.  Once you achieve your goal of getting certified in CAD, think of some other goals that might help you lead a purposeful life.    You might need some time of reflection before it becomes clear to what is next.  I suggest you also try to make your job a positive not a negative.  Getting out might be a goal but in the mean time think of your job as a resting place that you need until you are ready to move on rather then a curse that you have to bare.  Find the things that give you a sense of purpose in your work.  If it is not the work itself maybe the relationships with those you work with.  Most people it is both the sense of contribution to the company’s well being plus the relationships with those you work with.  If you at one time loved engineering then try to figure out why.  What did you love about it?  Because it was new and you were learning new things and it was more interesting?

I have been thinking about what you said and I have been looking at my job in a different light. I am creating my own projects around the office that incorporate what I DO like about my job and my biggest obstacle is overcoming the "taking everything personal" mindset. I guess I base my worthiness on what people think of me and was taking it so far that people didn't even want to talk to me for fear I would blow up. I have to remind myself that everyone makes mistakes, I am good at my job but I still have a lot to learn. Today I was encountered with a co-worker who talked to me as if I had no idea what he was talking about (pertaining to a job we were working on) when I just explained it to HIM yesterday. Normally I would develop an attitude about the way in which he spoke to me, but, today I just let it go in one ear and out the other. I am learning to pick my battles. I have also changed my diet to avoid all the sugar I was eating when stressed, instead I am reaching for water, fruits and veggies and walking after work to relax after work. Thank you for your advice. I am on my wat to liking my job again.
