Going from Fired to Owning Own Business

Quote From: nadaclue

Tell me more about being 'too this and too that' will you?  I feel the same way about myself in the workplace.
I know what I want to do more than anything and that is to teach technology  courses at the college level.  I thought by getting my MBA that would be enough and have applied to several junior colleges in Texas but so far no luck.  I also want to help ministers set up podcasting for their sermons to be able to be downloaded worldwide too but I think that would not be income producing, more of a volunteer kind of thing.  I am very knowledgeable about computers and all of my friends call me when they need to find something online or have a problem with their computers.   So how do I put all of those interests together into a business?

Quick note for renegade

Quote From: renagade

I hear what your saying.  I am 59 and have been fired also.  I also agree with Laurie(laurie I sent you an email and it came back).

The military and civilian world are different.  There are two words in your blog that are the key telling

points of why your having trouble.  The first one is aggresive - not in all places, but this is viewed by

one too many businesses as a Negative - I know because I am.  The other word that really bothers

me is 'prestige'.  Very few companies of today that I have read are willing to put a newcomer in a

Prestige job in the beginning.

Laurie is right if you are aggressive the best bet is to go out on your own.  I myself signed up for Expericnce works and they are helping me Also I am doing things on my own because I am too this

and too that.

Do not let any of this get to you At All.

I've only got a few seconds, just wanted to tell you to resend your email you said you sent to me.  It is rlsangels@earthlink.net.  I don't know why it didn't get to me.  It is correct in my profile.  Thanks.

Personality

Quote From: nadaclue

Dear Laurie - Pls tell me more...ie, what is it that makes you think your personality has so much to do with your keeping and/or getting a job?  II am interested because in about a month I will be beginning a job search in my new town.  I am a bit (A LOT)aprehensive because at my last job it seems I just did not click with my coworkers.  My 3-month review was done by peers and many of them said I was too quiet.  Some said I asked too many questions, did not take care of internal problems by myself.  Then others said I did not ask enough questions.  I left there feeling really sad, depleted and just plain confused.  I want my next job to be a great experience but I am gunshy now.
My personality is very blunt and aggressive.  At least that is what I have been told.  I am an ENFP (Extrovert Intuitive Feeler Perceiver) and I am an Aries.  How do all those things mix?  Not sure really.  I guess my advice in the job hunt is to watch others and work like they do.  I guess that was my mistake at my last company.  I saw them coming in at 8:30 - 8:45 but still I was always early - I saw them wearing jeans and I wore professional clothes.  I was always reading business books and submitting ideas and they didn't.  (or if they did they didn't talk about it).    I still have my military work ethic.  I was fired from the police department and they told me that I was no longer wearing a uniform and should not act like I did.  Unless you wear a uniform at our police department they really don't think much of your capabilities.  I don't want to sound like I take no responsibility - I did make mistakes - but those same mistakes got me medals in the Air Force!  Mistakes like showing initiative and just making decisions.

Hi, this is Laurie’s hubby.  Personality is what makes us who we are.  Face it, who wants to work with a grumpy  person for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.  I find that most folks are great people once you really get to find out just what makes them tick.  Even the grumpy ones have hearts once you’ve melted the ice away sometimes.  And if you are someone who enjoys your job, I believe it will reflect in how you perform your job.  But, not all jobs are suited for everyone.  And doing a job that you hate will reflect.  Have you ever been waited on by someone who can’t stand their job!  Not a pretty sight.  I think that’s why so many people are researching home based businesses now a days.  They are tired of doing something that they kind of like, but it just doesn’t make them feel complete.   And if you take advantage of all the tax benefits available, it would be silly not to even have a part time home biz just to get those.   That was one of the many reasons we jumped in.  Now, as for your past job where you had confusing reports on your 3-month review.  Your supervisor should have taken all that in with a grain of salt and understood that each co-worker saw you in a completely different light.  The out going ones may have seen you as too quiet, and the quiet ones who had been there a while couldn’t understand why you asked questions…  We’ll after 20 years in the service and 10 years in the private sector I’ve learned one thing.  There’s no such thing as too many questions when you’re learning a job.  I would have expected you to ask tons of questions within your first 3 months.  Unless the job entailed asking if you want fries with that!    Don’t be gun shy OK.  It seems that you have a lot to offer an employer, and it seems that you’re looking for a fresh start if you’re going to a new town.  Treat it as such.  A fresh start.

Hi Nadaclue

Quote From: nadaclue

Tell me more about being 'too this and too that' will you?  I feel the same way about myself in the workplace.

What I am not is a Team Player - what I am is a Team Member at best.  I feel that team players to a degree are one of the causes of a business not achieving great success.  I do not like to work with

people who do not know who they are, who do not know what they are doing, are afraid to do something on their own.

I am not only assertive but I am aggressive.  I have an ego, I have attitude.  I feel that people should be competely knowledgable in what they do and hate to hear the words 'I don't know'.  If your being taught something Learn as much as you can.

Another word I hate is the word 'Fit' - as in 'Well you seem to have the qualifications - now are you a good fit.  I feel that a lot of companies are missing the boat on Really Good people that could send that company into orbit because 'your not a good fit'.  I once had a discussion with a friend of mine

about this and I asked him 'do you mean that if you could hire somebody great, but they had maybe a slightly 'rough' edge you wouldn't' and the answer 'if they weren't a good fit - no'  he asked me what

I would do and I said 'I'd tell my people to Grow up - he just glared at me - like I committed a crime.

This is why as I work I am also creating my own business.

What is my Personality.  I found out that I'm a San/Chlor or the strongest horse in the barn.

Ya ain't gonna like this but - your line 'I still have my military work ethic' tells me why you are probably

being fired.  There is a World of Diferrence between military life and civilian life.  You've got to remember that a lot of civilians don't go for that military stuff, or chain of command.

I for one do and don't believe in a chain of command - if I don't get results from my immediate - you

better believe I'm going to the top.

I do agree showing initative and making decisions irks some companies because a lot have this

team player mentality that says everyone must agree or nobody goes forward and to do so - how dare you!!!

Well, thank you for this reply.  I think I have things to learn and could stand to be a bit more flexible but I really, really have a hard time conforming.  I have never been one to just follow along like a sheep.  I have not changed my outfits just because everyone wears jeans.  Are people really that way - that you have to conform so just to fit in?  Boy, I must be naive.  What happens to BE YOURSELF?  If being me has to change then won't I be unhappy just because I am straying from my real self?  Heres and example of one thing I've experienced.  Most workers come straggling in 10-15, even 20 minutes late and I get there 20 minutes early every day.  One day I am late and I get called to the boss's office for a reprimand.  That is how it has been for me - like I feel like a target and get into trouble without even trying!   I have nearly always been this way in my adult life so I am used to it but still don't enjoy the ride of it all.  Yesterday, I went to a party with my new husband and his family.  I had a great time, mingled enough but really enjoyed talking with XX.  On the way home my husband told me no one in the family likes XX.  Go figure!!   What kind of adjustments can I make without feeling like I am just acting?  Your advice 'watch others and work as they do'  just really sounds overwhelming and my past has nothing to do with the military(with all due respect).

Tell me this - in every interview one is asked 'are you a team player?' so do you answer 'no, I am a team member at best'?

I have actually been asked very few times if I am a team player but when I am asked this - I tell them that I am a team member(I never metion I'm not a team player).  I say that I have no problem working with people and that sometimes there is going to be situations where a few of the team will

have to carry the ball.

When I am asked point blank are you - I then say no and explain why.  Sometimes they listen and go 'oh ok' and other times they say in a round about way 'too bad'.

I'll tell you one thing tho when you achieve success and they ask how you did it and you mention

that either your not a team player or that you had to do this and this and this - these same people

somehow forget what you ain't and want to know how you did it.
