New beginnings

Quote From: skwirl

I just started a new job in October. I manage a storage facility (mini-storage) a Budget Truck Rental, and a Dog wash. The stress is killing me! My previous job (archetectural stone manufacturer) was extrememly physical. I loved it, but my body just couldn't handle it, so I took the new job for more money and less physical stress. The new job is making me more physically stressed than the old job! I can't even eat lunch because my stomach is always in knots. I just found out the business is up for sell and don't know where the future of it is going, not that I care because I hate it anyway, and am going to quit. But the thing is, I'm sick of just working for money. I don't give a crap about money, I just wanna be happy and be able to pay my bills in the process. So I've been doing alot of surfing on the web, googling "finding my life's purpose" and "finding my passion" and a hundred other things to the same affect. Anyway, I've always known that I was born to "create" things. That is my gift. But my passion is helping old people. That's the thing that really touches my heart. So I have decided to find a way to combine the two, thus hopefully being happy! LOL!! About 3 days after I decided to go in that direction, I saw an ad in the paper for an activity assistant at a retirement community! So I went and applied for the job today. The funny thing is, about 7 years ago, one of my customers (I used to cut hair) is president of a huge assisted living center, and he had offered me the job of Activity Director. Said that I would be perfect for it, but I had my hair styling career and wasn't interested at the time. Well, I think he was right, and I think I would be perfect for it. I am so excited about the possibility of getting up in the morning and looking forward to my job! I may not get this particular one, but there are a ton of those places here and I will apply to everyone if I have to! I will MAKE somebody hire me! LOL!!!!
I read your reply to my post "I hate work" and then I read your post about work.  It sounds so similar to my situation of having successive jobs that you hate.  And I'm like you.. i really resent having to work for money!!  I just want to be happy and get by.  You are right about needing to find my passion.  I love helping people, I love animals, I love reading, I love movies and I love learning.  And recently I have started writing and really enjoy that.  My work doesn't rule my life but it's such a major part of my life because I work 5 days a week and do lots of overtime (unpaid) work as a teacher.  I became a teacher because I love helping people and I like teaching.  Some days are wonderful when I help the kids and get through to them.  But most days are an uphill battle to nowhere.  I know now that I don't want to stay in teaching kids and I have thought about teaching adults .  I found out  that I have to do a course to be able to teach adults but it shouldn't be too hard.  I sitll don't know if it's the right job for me.. and there actually aren't many permanent jobs in the area but i need to make steps in another direction.

I hope you found a job you enjoy!

Worst bosses ever!

I just joined the message boards, I hope that you don't mind me blowing off steam and asking for advice.

I have been with my current job for 2 years.  I love the job, I just can't stand my bosses, the environment and hostility they have created.  My "supervisor" is an older woman who is so rude, and has no problem acting on her moods.  Actually herself and our manager run our department according to their moods!  One day (and this has actually happened) we can all sit around and small (while still working) and we can get "written up" for talking, so the next day no one spoke at all, and we reveived "warnings" about not getting along with co workers.  Seriously this happens!  The last straw for me was when the supervisor started following me around the building and questioning me as to what I was doing.  Obviously I am working and needed help from other departments to get the answers that I need.  I was even followed into the restroom by her!  I was also "written up" for "making a face while a coworker was eating at her desk".  I don't even remeber that at all!  I have had my lunch shift changed so that while everyone else is gone to lunch, I am the only one in the entire office!  My supervisor has also told me that she doesn't care for me and that she actually will sit and just watch me sometimes.  How bizzare!  We have a very high turn around rate in our department!  There are only 2 of us that have been there 2 years.  And everytime someone quits, we have to listen to the bosses complain about it in a meeting for about a half an hour.  We asked if we could have higher positions since we are the only ones that have stayed, and we were told no because we don't have enough experience.  Funny how someone off the street has the experience though.  Also eveyday (litterally) we have to hear the bosses talk about other coworkers and how stupid they are and all the abusive language you can ever dream up!  Yes, they use the 'F' and 'B' words as a common noun.  The newest annoyance one of them has started is everytime I say something to someone, wheather it is about work or not, she will slam her fist on her desk and sigh loud enough for all to hear!  And here is the icing on the cake~ I have to leave to go to court one day, not vacation or any other excuse, and I came back afterward.  Well while I was gone, she talked about me like I had just done the unthinkable!!  She put me down, blamed me when things went wrong for her, and called me names.  And belive me when I say, this is only half of the story!

I know I should get another job, and I am looking, but I just can't beat the positive things about that company.  Example the benefits and vacation packages.  Yet I am a different person now than when I started.  My real personality is fun, singing, happy, now Im just mad all of the time.

Does anyone know of any good ideas to block out the bosses negitivity or any advice at all?  and for the record my boss rally sighs now that I have decidded to humm (like I used to).  It helps to block them out!

Although I understand what you are saying, I would be glad to fill in for you!  I also understand that happiness doen't pay the bills so we have to do whatever it takes to pay the bills.

You said you are a temp, isn't there another assignment you could get and time it so you don't miss a pay check?  I have been where you are, but with the experiences I have with my current job, yours doesn't sound that bad.  Can you study or read any self help books on your down time?

An excellent book for you to read now would be "Living Through the Meantime"

That should get you through this~

LOL!!! NOPE!!  I haven't found that job that I enjoy yet. But I've learned to look at the positive aspects of my job instead of the negative. I'm gonna end up doing what I'm meant to be doing, I just know it! It will come to me someday SOON!! I have changed my whole attitude about things, and am grateful for what I have, am even more grateful for what I am about to receive! I'm gonna make it big time, and all my dreams are about to be realized. I've just changed my perspective on things, and I'm happy and am only gonna get happier. I wish you the same, because it can be done! Just put on some happy pants and see what comes your way! :)

Mothers and their Kids fake emergencys

I am a single 50 year old woman. My bigest gripe about work ( I work 2 jobs) is these mothers that use their kids for an excuse to leave work. When work gets hard or it is near time for cleanup. Their baby gets sick. They have to leave work, and the bulk of the work falls on me or someother single person. I have No problem with a legitmate sickness. But this business of useing your kid to bolt from work just sucks.  Any  one  caught doing that should be fired. it is too simple to do.. You use your cell phone to call some one to call in a fake child problem and then you leave. I am now refuseing to answer my phone on off hours (espeically on the weekends)  because of this type of crap. I never minded working holidays for those that have children, but singles have lives and families too. And we get short changed on scheduled work hours because we are single and do not have kids. People with kids get the lions share of the work scheduled work hours and we singles have to make do with what ever hours are given to us even though we have to pay everything by ouselves.   My next job, I will lie about have kids and being married. Cause telling the truth does not pay.

Stress at Work

Quote From: merestcat

I have always thought that there is a job out there that I would enjoy, but I have tried so many different careers and I have hated all of them.  What I hate is the fact that I have to work in order to make money in order to live.  I feel like work is something I have to do, rather than something I want to do.  I wish that I could do whatever I like all day long like study, read, see people, basically plan my day however I want.  I ended up getting very ill because I hate working so much.  And i spend nights before work crying myself to sleep because i have to go to work the next day.  Now I am thinking of having a baby, just so that I don't have to go to work for a while.  Though i do realise that having a baby is a life long job.. I think it'd be something I would enjoy.  I'd also love to do another career change, but it keeps costing me a lot in retraining and I wonder if it'd make a difference anyway!

How do other people feel about their jobs?  Does anyone enjoy working?
Myself-I absolutely despise working.  There was a time I enjoyed it, but after years of abuse by unrealistic money hungry bosses, I don't give two shits about working.  Don't have a baby to stay at home-when I was married, that happened to me, and it gave me 18 years of sheer hell.  The husband didn't help, money was a constant problem, plus you are stuck in the house with a whining screaming infant.  It sucked!!!!!  Plus, I still had to work on top of it all-pretty much ruined my life.  I would rather have my fingernails pulled out without anesthetic than go through that again.  I have not been able to find any type of work enjoyable-I just hope I can make it to retirement without losing my sanity or my ass....

Stressing in Vegas

Hi, I posted before about how you would all feel about Vegas being smoke free?! Well that was before they passed the new law, guess what, we have now gone non-smoking in our restaurants. I know a lot of you are saying GREAT, if you are trying to make a living her though it is not so great. Since this law passed there are 45,000 people out of work in the state of Nevada. It is a complicated law to get into but basically if you serve food you cannot have smoking. The thing is most of the small business owner make there money on gaming so their kitchens had to shut down. A lot of people thought that there favorite little joints will be non-smoking, only they do not  exists anymore. This is really affecting my job, I might be layed off any day now. Let me know what you all think and if I started a petition to over turn the law would you all be willing to sign?

I have a child and have never used him as an excuse to leave work, but I have seen it done. I have had to leave because of him (had to pick him up from school) but I was called in on my day off that day. I do not agree with people using their kids. I have requested to have the weekends off so I can spend with my child, I work nights and he goes to school all day. My work has provided the weekends for me, but they also know that if they need me the can. I appologize on behalf of all parents for what todays working women have turned into. We want the rights to work and be independent, but it seems like some of us still want special treatment for having a child, it is not right.
