(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: sweetladie

Let's take into consideration that this happened some 5 years ago. She is probably all cried out. Have you ever thought that she is trying to get her life back together for her self and her family! I do think that if she has nothing to hide that she should take the polygraph test.

If you were from Glen Rose, you would know how right you are!!

The boy was too glib for my money.

Quote From: onecutepeanut

And it is VERY wrong to sexually assault a child these TEENAGERS should know better, especially if they have a GOOD upbringing and not just "prominent" parents that buy off a lie detector to go in their so-call CHRISTIAN son favor.  HE IS A LIAR!!!  I have real problem that the family of LIARS didn't want to show their faces if they have nothing to hide and the LIARS think they are innocent.  I can't wait to hear and see the 3rd accuser tomorrow.  At least he is visible.

P.S.  Joelle, I hope you suit the hell out of that town and WIN!!!

Even before he failed the lie detector test I didn't buy his story.  It was too pat, too rehearsed.  Any kid that age who can calmly reel off such a detailed accusation is too slick.  And his mama has bought his story hook, line and sinker.

My money is on this teacher's innocense.

She's innocent....in my opinion!

it's a very terrible thing that has happend to this teacher. It's my opinion that these students are being deceptive just as the lie detector revieled. Also the fact that the other student recanted his story indicates their is a scheme going on. maybe the student made advances towards the teacher and was shut down and the rejection was so embarresing they couldn't handle it. something i agree with is there has been many, many movies made where the fantasy is seducing "the teacher" not to mention a "french"one at that. now the students are so afraid of telling the truth due to embarresing their families they are scared to tell the truth.I believe if anyone can get to the bottom of a scandal it's Dr.Phil he's a smart ol' Boy he will get the truth.  LaNay

Dr. Phil was wrong!

Quote From: swtnovember

I don't know for sure what is the truth.  I have a hard time dealing with the fact these boys made this up and have ruined another persons life.  I am really hoping someone can step forward and just tell the truth so all of these people can go on with their lives.  Or at least start to.

This teacher has been dealing with this situation for several years now.  I was shocked when Phil accused her of not being upset enough.  Good heavens!  I'm sure there was a time when she was raging mad, but that time has passed.  Now that she knows she won't be imprisoned for up to 160 unbelievable years, she is undoubtedly calmer than earlier on.  And she has had considerable exposure to lawyers and the legal system by this time so she may very well be able to present her side of the story in a logical and ordered manner.  I'm sure nobody knows the details any better than she does!

Don't jump to conclusions, Dr. Phil.  You'd be calmer at this point yourself if you'd been through what this woman has been through.

I also felt that the boy's spiel was too pat.  Dr. Phil seemed to find positives after listening to him while I felt it was totally rehearsed.  Most boys that age just aren't that smooth.

Get Ready to Home School Your Children

Quote From: beinformed

One point to be made, a teacher doesn't have to be alone in the classroom with a student for the false accusation to be made.  Today an accusation is all that is needed for charges to be brought, and a teacher's life to be ruined.

Then, like in many of these postings, guilt is automatically assumed.  One poster said "jail her".  Maybe it should be "jail him", the student, for false statements to law officials.

I watched this show and felt like I was watching the last month in the life of my family.  My 25 yr old nephew who is an advanced placement English teacher and High School football coach is at this moment on administrative leave because of false allegations from high school girls, a book that was on an approved reading list and wigged out, psychotic parents.  What is wrong with us that we no longer have any sense about us at all?

Accusing teachers of sexual misconduct has become a national pasttime.  Many times these students actually threaten teachers with allegations if they don't get the grades they want or just want some attention.  Lives and careers go up in smoke because we think only adults can be sexual preditors.  I have seen many high school students who were more sexually sophisticated than their teachers.  My nephew has not been charged with any wrongdoing...yet, the community is divided, the school is in an uproar...all because of a Cormic McCarthy book and some girls making false allegations.  It's a nightmare.

Get ready to home school your children.  If we keep this up, there won't be any teachers.  Who would want that job anyway?  The pay is terrible and you risk going to prison for just showing up.

Dissappointed with Dr Phil

Quote From: damara1210

There is no excuse for having any type of relationship with a student. Teachers are teachers of school work. Sex Education is for the parents to teach, and you so not ever engage in it with a minor child for any reason. Sick Sick people, and I think this would not have happen if the first case had been treated with very harsh puinshment like they do with men. These women need their rights as parents totally and forever removed from them. They should never be allowed near anything younger than 21 years old, PERIOD.
I feel Dr Phil was hard on the teacher in the beginning by saying she was not showing emotion regarding the young man's statement.  A look at her face showed anger and tears behind her eyes and you could see her hurt and anger.  She was trying to be composed and professional and NOT say ugly comments about the young man. Dr Phil read this as not showing emotion. I was disappointed with his analysis of this.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: kstar_83

As a member of the Glen Rose community, I believe the actions of the school board was what was best for the Glen Rose school system.  Everyone who lives in Glen Rose knows what happened and would feel very uncomfortable with Mrs. Ogletree teaching their children.  I'm not saying she would do this again, but what parent would want to take that chance???

She wasn't convicted of anything.  I had her as a teacher and she was a good teacher.  I would not mind having her teach my daughter.  She is innocent. Not everyone in Glen Rose believes that she did it.  And nobody knows what really happened.  Only she and those stupid boys know what happened.  You need to get your facts straight because you are claiming that they proved she did this...which is not the case!

may the truth win out

It was obvious to me right from the start of the show that this teacher is innocent. We unfortunatly live in a society where kids are exposed to too much. I think it is important that children are protected but we can't always assume that a child is telling the truth. Kids these day have lied about parental abuse and have threatend there parents that they will call CPS on them unfortunatley children do sometimes make these things up. Whatever the reason maybe they were upset with the teacher or it was a prank that once it started they did not know how to back out of it. I think it is important to hear both sides. I hope that in the end this teacher is found innocent and can go back to teaching. It is a shame because if this continues people will no longer want to teach because they will be to afraid of accusations that could occur.

been there

At the previous high school that I worked at, I was "harassed" by a male student. He continually asked me for money, he wanted to know what I thought about his looks, and he continually asked me to date him. I complanied to the department chair and to school administrators. The vice principle told me to humor him. I find nothing humorous about a 17 year old boy coming on to a 40+ year old teacher. Administration refused to stop the harassing behavior because the student was ESL ( English second language ) and special ed. Because of being ESL and in special ed, he brought in a huge amount of money to the district in government funding. That is why they tolerated his behavior and ignored my complaints.

I really feel for the teacher that you had on todays program. She is showing a great deal of courage to come forward with this. I wish that I had as much courage as her.

Get Real

Come on Phil,

The woman has been found not guilty criminally and civillaly.  She's been going through this for five years, so she's probably not going to be so emotional.

One kid already said he lied, another parent and kid want to be on Dr. Phil but they are too afraid to show their faces.  It's obvious why, the kid can't pass a lie detector test.

She's very educated and has been through a lot of legal proceedings, so it doesn't surprise me that she would not be overly emotional and be speaking more legal like.  So, give it a break and don't victimize this victim more then she already has been.

You also said "She says she is falsely accussed.".  No, she was falsely accused.

Her reputation has been ruined, the school district is wrong, and she deserves her back pay, all her retirement, and I believe she should sue the families to recover her costs for fighting this scandle.

Enjoy,

Steve
