(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: auburnjenn

This "kid" must be around 19 or 20 years old by now due to time frame given. He is a grown adult by law. So why is he having mommy decide that he can't be on camera? If you are bold enough to accuse someone of something of this nature -- and they are basically vindicated -- but drag it out for years and years, then you need to face that person in the eye and explain your story. The fact that he wasn't there and hid behind mama tells me everything.
I realize that since he couldn't seem to remember exactly how old he was when this happened, that makes it hard to figure his current age.  He's 21 and I believe also married now.

Anger can HURT alot

Quote From: dradsmith

I think we need to be real careful about automatically condemning the teacher before it is proven they committed the crime.  I know there are teachers out there that commit these felon acts with children, but there are also some that have lost their careers because a child decided to get even.

As a teacher, I have to now be REAL careful about being alone in a classroom alone with a student.  Used to it was perfectly acceptable to have a student come in for help after school but now it is way too scary. That is sad because the student suffers.

Children are different now and by this statement, I mean SOME not ALL.  There is less respect and support for teachers many times at the parent level.  If we do something that the child doesnt like then we experience the attitude. Some even threaten to get even.

I know of a wonderful teacher that was falsely accused by a student of sexual misconduct.  It was proven that she did nothing wrong, but her career is over. She is in thousands of dollars of debt from attorney fees, was removed from her classroom, and her reputation ruined, and career virtually over as a teacher.  What can she use her teaching degree for now? so she is also out all the money for her education as well.

All because this student was mad about a decision that she made and decided to get even. The parents dont have the money to repay her for her attorney costs and what can they do to the child to punish them for destroying her career?  Boot him out of school for the rest of his life not likely.

This is a real serious situation that teachers are facing. There needs to be some guidelines set before a teacher is automatically condemned and looses everything over a false accusation. For those that do commit this type of crime, then they need to loose everything. They are an embarrassment to our profession.

I can see KIDS using these types of accusations to get back at  teachers out of ANGER!! This is so very unfair to Joelle, her career is totally ruined!! When there are so few GOOD Teachers out there, that love teaching and  are trully teaching  for all the right reasons.THE KIDS!!!

Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

I wonder if these parents question their child's upbringing?  Why wouldn't their adolescent inform the parent(s) of this?  I am the mother of a 15 year old boy; his father and I have been married for over 15 years.  We converse about everything under the sun, moon and stars; nothing is off limits!

However, if I had actual evidence (hiring Dr. Phil's private investigator, Harold Copusor comparable counterpart) of ANYONE abusing my son, sexual or otherwise, they would be praying for eternal damnation in the fires of HELL once I get my hands, feet, body upon their evil beings!  No ifs, and, or buts!  The criminal courts in this United States of America are of no solace with regard to the protection of the innocents.

At least or approximately a decade ago, a boy was taken and abused by his male karate instructor.  The father of the boy, waited in an airport, pretending to talk on a pay phone as law enforcement walked this alleged perpetrator past the dad.  The dad shot and killed the karate instructor.  This is what happens when you know and history has shown, that the criminal justice system has failed.  I would, without a doubt, do the same to my son's abuser however death would not come so quickly to him/her.

Again???

Quote From: kstar_83

As a member of the Glen Rose community, I believe the actions of the school board was what was best for the Glen Rose school system.  Everyone who lives in Glen Rose knows what happened and would feel very uncomfortable with Mrs. Ogletree teaching their children.  I'm not saying she would do this again, but what parent would want to take that chance???

Did the Texas sun fry your brains down there?  ....do this again??  She didn't do anything in the first place!  It is clear this woman is innocent and ya'll are perpetuating a horrific "sentence" on a person who does not deserve it!

Glen Rose should stand up and ATONE for the wrongs committed to this woman.  Shame on all of you!!

Teachers are not the only one's

Dr Phil's attempt to show the real horror of false accusations, doesn't just  effect teachers.  There is a much broader and complex  stort to be told that the media is reluctant to tell. Is it fear it will take away from the focus of real sex offenders?  It isn't always kids doing the accusing. People need to be very cautious before making judgement and jumping on the child abuse hysteria  with out real crediable evidence.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

It will be interesting to see how the rest of this story plays out today.  It would be a total shame if this teacher was falsly accused.  I think sometimes teens act and don't have the maturity to realize what the repercussions of their actions will be.  If this turns out to be false this teachers reputation is tainted along with her husband and children.  I would countersue which would include suing the school then move and start a new life. Someone needs to set the example to anyone who falsely accuses.   Now if there was something that comes out was true then it is a shame she got off.  I guess I will have to wait until 4 for the outcome.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: flthomcat

It's not easy to pass a lie detector test BOTH TIMES one has taken it. That speaks volumes.

But any good lawyer would tell his client NOT to take the test, even if innocent.

Since the boy had already passed the test, the woman is obviously not too sharp for appearing on national television. To me, that signals that she has problems. That doesn't mean she IS guilty, but it leads to suspicions that she may very well be...

More often than not, these allegations are TRUE. The police have already conducted a full investigation before charges are filed. They interview both parties, co-workers, other students, any witnesses, etc. When charges are filed, it's usually because both the police and the district atty believe they have a case!

How do you know that it's not easy to pass a lie detector two times?  Have you personally tried? And why do you think that she's not smart for appearing on TV? Did you hear her lawyer say that she had already passed a lie detector test, also. Believing they have a case and actually having one are not the same thing. One of the boys father was a former mayor who surely had some influence over charges being filed.

Not having a case didn't stop the former DA in SC. He lost his job and he's facing disbarment over it.

The DA in this case  asked for a mistrial and decided not to refile. To me THAT speaks volumes. If he really thought he had hard evidence he would have refiled the charges and went to trial. Looks to me like he found out that the boys were not telling the truth.

People like you usually have your mind made up as soon as you hear the story and don't really care about the facts. She's guilty, put her in prison and throw away the key.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: buffsand

The teacher could have been sentenced to 160 years in prison if convicted? Insane! The judicial system in Texas and the judicial system in all the other states throughout this damned country are ridiculous! Heck, the Enron jerks got off with short sentences because white crime pays! But sex? Oh, brother--this country sucks when it comes to sex issues. Get rid of your prudish behavior, Americans! And I don't mean regarding sexual relations between teachers and students.

Are you just here to rant?

I know that here in Washington state the teachers either get laid off, lose their jobs , probabation or if they will not stay away from the student they get 1-7 years in jail. See the case of MaryLee Laternea and I knwo this one for sure. She and Vili are married now and have both their children back and had another.

usually this is NOT a hard time in prison  or long time in prison action. IF anyone is lucky they get slapped on the hand , lic removed in that state and move on.

2. Sexual predators need to be put into prison for a LONG time, if that is what you are referencing to. Your rantings are a bit miss-palced and so I do not know what you are ranting about.

3. 5-6 grade students are not adults and teachers who have sex with  children are considered predators.

4. It is not a good idea to have sexual relations with a teacher in any setting  , in college out of the college setting, because of favoritism for one.

5. under the age of 18 years the teacher SHOULD know better, if not , then the teacher is not responsible enough to teach  school and should be released from their position of trust.  TEACHING IS ABOUT TRUST , not sex in  grades K-12.

6. I want my kids to pass the SAT's  and WASL tests with flying color's and not have to worry about bringing a condom to school for the teacher*

Evidence?

Another thing that bothers me about this is that there seems to be no real hard "evidence." In this day and age, there is always some kind of hard proof - emails, text messages, myspace/facebook postings, website pictures, voice recordings, etc. There is none of this that I have seen so far. Unless there is more to the story that Dr Phil has not told us, it is strictly a child's word against an adult.

This is why I am not a teacher

I had thought about making a career change a few years back and teaching - specifically at the high school level.  But I decided it would be too risky  because of just this scenario.  And for a couple of reasons.

Teenage boys lie about sex!  My classmates lied about me 20 years ago and ruined my reputation at my high school (the fact that I was a painfully shy virgin all through high school didn't matter - they said I was easy so before long the entire school "knew it was true").  Teenage boys lie about sex because they think that it makes them look like hot shots, like it's a proof of manhood.  And the most coveted prize is the "older woman" - the teacher fixation (especially a french teacher for heaven's sake) is so cliched an adolescent fantasy it was made into a rock song years ago.   Ever hear "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen?

And too many kids in this generation think they should be able to have what they want, when they want it, whether it be grades they haven't earned, a free pass for bad behaviour, whatever.  And if they don't get what they want - they scream "I am a victim!"  They'd rather be victims than take any responsibility for themselves.  And their parents reinforce that - swooping in to threaten teachers and schools if little Johnny doesn't get straight A's, or doesn't make the team, etc.  God forbid they make little Johnny actually work at something or admit that their little spawn isn't the absolute best at everything.  The kids develop no morals or respect for others - just an out-sized sense of entitlement - because theire parents are always telling them they are perfect no matter what they do.

So why wouldn't a teenage boy think twice about making a false accusation?  Because there is absolutely no downside for him.  All it takes is an accusation to get revenge for being denied what he wants.  No proof necessary - the baseless accusation is enough to ruin a teacher's life.
