(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: ilovewyoming

I felt the same as you two and so did my husband.  Everyone deals with things differently.  She has been dealing with this a long time and maybe all those emotions that would make you cry and lose composure are gone.  I felt he attacked her because he thought she should react a certain way.  Shame on him....he is in a profession that should recognize that not all people react the in the same way.

Teachers connect with students. And though the notes do seem iffy out of context , as a teacher I must say...you don't spend your days interacting thinking would a jury consider this and indication of guilt. Now that I look back there probably are some interactions...hugs, copliments, gifts etc...that although truly harmless, would be used against me I am certain if a student decided to let ther imagination and mouth go to far...these guys got in a way over their head...the lie took on a life of its own and now she's paying. A note does not indicate sexual conduct....trust me. As far as her composure...Dr. Phil and that boy are lucky she didn't do exactly what I would have done which is reach over and slap the lies out of his mouth for putting her family in danger of loosing a mother and a wife. Shame on that punk.

dito

your supposed to cry about something, that you've been pissed about for years.  why would you want to sit across from someone that has messed up your life.  usually people, that are in the wrong, are in denial and people that have been thrown under the bus, are supposed to say lets talk about this.

The teacher is innocent!

If what the boys said were true, the teacher should have been prosecuted. However, after listening to her and to the stories the boys told, I do not believe for a minute that she engaged in any inappropriate behavior. I could almost be convinced of her innocence simply by her refusal to accept a plea agreement. She was really willing to put everything on the line to prove her innocence. I do not believe a guilty person would have done that. Guilt would have made her take the quick and easy way. She stood her ground and I swear you could see a look on her face when the boys polygraphs showed deceit that said,"There, I told you I was innocent!"  Dr Phil said he didn't understand her demeanor when she was talking about some of the accusations. To me it seemed that she felt that her position was clear, she didn't do it, and the only thing left for her to do or say was point out the many discrepancies in the stories. She has been through the wringer and doesn't seem to be wastiing any more emotion on it, just point out the facts. Shame on the school board for not recognizing their error in acting before the outcome of the case and shame on the boys. They should be either prosecuted or at least held civilly liable.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Spend some time in South Dakota. You won't believe how they sensationalize sex offender cases up here. I've not heard names and addresses given out routinely over the radio every day....yet....but if some honcho reads about Texas doing it, I guarrantee they'll push for doing the same thing here. This Republican conservative majority state is laughable at the ways they try to invent to interfere in other people's lives.

I feel terrible for what's happened to this woman. When this is all said and done, should not only finish her lawsuit againist that biased school district. she should also go after each and every one of those little liar's families and sue them 'till hell wouldn't have it. Then, take her winnings and leave that redneck town forever. And, oh yes. Make the school district AND those liar's families take out full page apologies and retractions in every newspaper in the state for what they put her though and ADMIT their viscious lies.

To me, that would be a great start.

sure wish "we the people" would stop this.  Your "full page apology" solution might actually be the answer.  Hit 'em in the pocketbook.  Or what about perjury charges?

I just posted again on Friday's show and as I read your comment to my first post, I remembered that this Matt kid, who was willing to "take this to his grave", mentioned discussing the case on the radio....there is no shortage of air time for this sort of thing....

then again on a national level, see Nancy Grace for the worst of the sensationalizm.

Love, Luanne

Teacher Scandal

I do not believe that this teacher would have opted to come on Dr. Phil's show is she were guilty, especially since she has a law suit against the school district.  If she had taken the chance that the boys would have passed their lie detector tests, it would have jeopardized her law suit.  Because of this, I think Dr. Phil was pretty hard on her, criticizing her reaction to statements made, etc., as not being angry enough when she has lived with this for years now and was able to dispute the statements made by the boys by showing discrepancies in their remarks.  Even at the very end, when both boys had failed tests, Dr. Phil's final comment was to the boy and he said, "If you are telling the truth............"  At that point no one believed he was telling the truth.

I love your show, Dr. Phil, but I felt bad for this teacher in this instance.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Someone had pointed out earlier that the note that said "IWTGYHSB", had an exclamation point and the S was underlined as to be important like SOOOOOO.  If you notice the other code "IASS" which they both agree is "I am so sorry".  The first s is underlined the same way.  This would fit Matt's account of what the two codes were.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

I think Matt was telling the truth.  Joella was too picky on the non important facts of the case and didn't become emotional at his accusations.  I don't put a lot of credit in lie detector tests, even the expert ones.  Why would this boy make all this up?  I'm sure he didn't want his parents to know about it at the time it happened, so he would have kept it under his lid if he had his way.  This woman married her high school teacher, and not a good looking one at that, compared to her beauty.  Doesn't that mean something?  To go for a guy old enough to be her teacher says there's something a little weird there.  She looked sneaky, and I feel she just lucked out in this case.

It's Hard to Believe Anyone Anymore

Quote From: bamaval

I believe the evidence presented so far confirms that the teacher is the one telling the truth.  She is fighting for her good name to be restored and by default the good name and reputation of her family.  If she didn't stand up for herself, she would admit that there was some truth to these accusations.  Some students will try anything for a prank, for revenge, and any other crazy reason.  Teachers have to be so careful and they have to maintain a visible wall of respect between themselves and their students at all times that cannot be crossed.  The school board is worried sick that they will have to pay damages to this teacher, and they should if the evidence is in her favor.

I have a lady friend who is a wonderful bus driver and always treats the kids as if they were her own.  And she got accused falsely of saying racist hurtful things to a child.  The mother of the child was an aide on the bus that brought up racial things in a discussion with my friend the bus driver.  All my friend said was, "I wouldn't do that."  Well the mother came in raving and screaming that my friend said hurtful things to her child and called him names when she wasn't there.  Now my friend has another aide on at the time that she was accused, and that aide will swear that my friend never said anything of the kind.  But that she always takes great care of those kids and is very even tempered and fair.

The end result was that my friend lost a weeks work and had a reprimand put in her folder.  And all because of a lie and false accusation.  And my friend can't sue to clear her good name and record.  But she had a perfect record for the previous 6  years.  When she came back to work she was told what a good job she did and how everyone missed her.  To top everything off her bus is a handicapped bus, and she saved a child's life who was going into a seizure.  But there is nothing now that will clear her name or record.  And all because of a lie that was told by a vindictive aide and by her child.  Remind you of anything we have been seeing about the French teacher?  How will she ever be able to clear her name now??

RESPONSE TO MICHELLE212/TEACHER SEX SCANDAL

Quote From: michelle212

There might be the odd truly innocent teenage boy in this part of the world, but because of TV and movies, MOST teenage boys are DYING to have sex sex sex, and they would LOVE it if a beautiful experienced woman wanted to teach them the ropes.  They love it!  They want it!  They only start crying about it when their Mom finds out and tells them that they must act all traumatized about it so they can get some money by suing the school or the teacher.  There isn't one normal healthy teenage boy who will be permanently traumatized by a lovely older woman teaching him how to be a man.  They want it!  They all want sex, and they know it's better with an experienced older woman.  (Rather than trying to beg their little 14-year-old girl friends to do it.) They aren't traumatized in any way, they want MORE, and they want to tell all their friends about it.  It's the greatest thing in their lives, until Mom steps in and ruins it.  I agree that teachers shouldn't take advantage of innocent kids who don't want it -- but MOST teenage boys would LOVE to have it!  the more the better!!  Do you remember that episode in the show Soap, where Billy Tate's teacher seduces him?  It's a mutual attraction, and the next morning Billy cannot shut up about it.  He says it's like discovering America, he's so thrilled, he can't imagine why everybody doesn't have sex all the time.  He says it's the greatest thing ever in the universe.  I believe that MOST teenage boys feel this way!  They love and want sex all the time -- who better to give it to them than a lovely older woman.  They aren't traumatized by it, they LOVE it and want more.  Their Moms may be traumatized about it, but the boys sure aren't!  Come on!

 MICHELLE212,

I DONT KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE BUT YOU ARE SO WRONG. ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT THIS SITUATION IT IS CHILD SEX ABUSE. SURE THE 14 AND 15 YEAR OLDS ARE CURIOUS ABOUT SEX, ESPECIALLY NOW SINCE IT IS THROWN IN THEIR FACE EVERY TIME THEY TURN AROUND. THE WAY I LOOK AT IT, THAT IS WHY GOD GAVE THEM HANDS AND GIRLIE MAGS.  IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY WANT IT OR NOT, THEY SHOULD'NT BE HAVEING SEX AT THAT AGE. EVERYTIME I SEE A VERY YOUNG GIRL OR BOY EITHER ONE PUSHING A BABY STROLLER I WANT TO PUKE! THAT KID DOES'NT HAVE A CHANCE. A SELECT FEW WILL DO GOOD IN LIFE AND BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THAT CHILD AND A WIFE. MOST DO NOT. MY SON WAS ABUSED BY A BABY SITTER WHEN HE WAS TWO. HE DOES NOT REMEMBER IT THANK GOD!  THIS PERSON WAS A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY AND HAD BEEN FOR YEARS. I AM VERY OUTSPOKEN REGARDING SEX ABUSE OF A CHILD. IT SICKENS ME TO THINK SOMEONE WOULD THINK THIS SITUATION ON DR PHIL TODAY WAS AN OK THING TO HAPPEN. AND NO, I AM NOT A MOM THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAUMATIZED AS NOT MUCH SURPRISES ME ANYMORE. I RAISED MY KIDS TO HAVE RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND THAT INCLUDES WOMEN! MY KIDS ALSO KNEW OTHER KIDS THAT THIS SAME OLDER WOMAN SEX ORDEAL HAPPENED TO AND THEY WERE AS SICKENED BY IT AS I WAS. MY KIDS WERE'NT ANGELS BUT I KNEW THEIR UPBRINGING WOULD TAKE HOLD AT SOME POINT AND IT DID! THANK GOD!  THE BOTTOM LINE LIKE I SAID BEFORE, IT IS STILL CHILD SEX ABUSE NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.

why did Dr Phil question her response?

On the Nov 1 show, Dr. Phil wondered why Ms. Ogletree wasn't displaying more anger, "that she wasn't emotional about it. " He said that if someone accused him falsely he would be mad.  I imagine she certainly was mad at the beginning, but after 5 years and over $100,000 in court and legal fees she is numbed, just as the accusers sound as if they are reading from a card. I can also understand why she did not want to see her accuser on the Nov 2 show.
