(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

As of January, 2009, this message board will become "Read Only" and will be closed to further posting. Please join the NEW Dr. Phil Community to continue your discussions, personalize your message board experience, start a blog and meet new friends.

It's about time

Although I do not feel predation by adults  is not happening, I was actually glad when, on tonight's show, the 3rd of 3 students was shown to be deceitful on their polygraph tests. When you are dealing with "CHILDREN" of this age, they are capable of "making up stories" & not caring what it may do to the accused. A "child" is to be believed but  I do feel their age, background, etc must be looked into as fully as the assused. For many years sextual assault was not discussed but, now, it appears to have gone to the other side of the "pendelum's swing".

Re: Teacher Sex Scandal

Dear Dr. Phil,

I watch your show every day and I agree with you most of the time, however, today I had a problem with the fact that this woman was showing no emotion. She has probably cried every tear that she had and at some point had to get strong to get thru this and learn the legal jergon. I'm going thru something similar , not as bad as her and I know that when I was accused, I couldn't take my head off the pillow for about 2 weeks.  I'm getting hard now too as you have to to get in survival mode. My  battle has cost me about 12,000 so far. I understand that this teacher has cost her her home-pretty much and her job. If I get a felony out of what I'm being accused of, I'll lose by real estate business. I've got a court date of Jan 14. 2008. I've got a preliminary hearing hearing transcript. I would be nervous to be on tv.

SHOW ON 11/01,02/07

Was glad to see that a question mark could be put on a "child's" accustion against an adult, be it a teacher,  policemen, priests/ministers, etc. A teenager is not an "innocent", they know right from wrong & therefore there are, I feel, more exceptions of guilt to this crime than statisticaly shown. The same problem exists when a 200 lb., 6' "child" is accused of a crime. Stealing hubcaps is no longer the offense but instead, rape, beatings, robberies, etc. are. There's a lot of "sick" people out there, but let's not assume the "child" is so pure all the time.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: ilovewyoming

Why didn't you go to your association??????????????????????////
It did go to the union. However, since the student was "special ed," this gave him  a "legitimate excuse" for harassing behavior. Because of the specifications about special ed, there was nothing that the union could do to protect me.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: coppertin

Apparently not everyone knows these boys because it is obvious that you do not.  I know each of these boys and their families.  My children went to school with them and I consider them to be truthful and trust-worthy.  Has anyone thought about the fact that she married her high school science teacher shortly after her own graduation?  It seems that a teacher/student relationship didn't bother her then.  Makes you think, doesn't it?

so did you know the boy that took back his story?  I grew up with him since I was 5.  The other two boys were little punks in highschool.  Matt damn sure is not trustworthy and the other one well I have a lot to say about that family but I won't.  The only good person in this was the boy that took back his story and admitted he lied.

I was once a "teenager" as all of us were at one point in time, and WE all learn how to manipulate people to make ourselves "appear" goody good shoes, and especially to our elders, our peers, our neighbors, our family and anyone else surrounding our everyday lives. YOU my dear are being fooled as those who believe these scum bags soon to be what they wish to be someday, to be "men". All men lie, and mostly due to their own insecurities with women. It was tonight's Matt who admitted he had only experienced ONE other gal prior to this teacher incident. If he was telling the truth about that, then he must be insecure, because when I was a teenager, most boys by the age of 16 had experienced MORE sexual encounters, but then again, look at Matt, he definetly has something to be insecure about!!!!!!! That poor teacher, may god bless her and her family.

The Boys are LYING!!!!!!!!!

Lets see Boy # 1 recanted his story b/c he is a LIAR!

Boy # 2 is a sad, pathetic MAMA'S BOY who failed the lie detector test and as we found out at the end of part 2, this "good Christian" boy has decided maybe he had more sex with her and forgot about it. B.S. more like mommy started to freak out b/c she believed his lies, his reputation is on the line and he had to say something to the millions of ppl who saw him FAIL the test. If he is being honest and Glen Rose where he resides is so small then why is he hiding and why did mommy say he can't show his face. So COWARDLY LIAR.

Next we have MATT, the COCKY, ARROGANT LIAR, he thought he could go on T.V. and further his lies. HMMM....as others have said NO MAN FORGETS HIS FIRST OR LAST BLOW JOB, so enough with his inconsistent lies. This little punk was probably jerking it her every night wrote a little poem and when he was caught had to make himself out to be the poor innocent kid. Also, I do not go screaming from the hill tops that I am Christian( I am Catholic and I do not think it makes me a better person), yet this punk does. Well, let me point out this "good, stand up, Christian" boy admitted to having sex with 1 woman already at the age of 16. At 16 I was a virgin, so it strikes me as odd that someone who had already had sex at the age of 16, would go playing the "I'm a Christian" card.

Now on to all those claiming that since Joelle married her highschool science teacher she was abused...he didn't look THAT much older than her. If she was say 16 or 17 and it was his first or second year teaching then I hardly call that abuse. These days we act like a 16yr old is a 6yr old and can't be held accountable for their actions. I am NOT saying that teacher/student relationships are a positive thing BUT in the past they were not as big of a deal b/c ppl didn't act like a 16 or 17yr old was incapable of making decisions. I know in the 1970's it wasn't frowned upon, my fave teacher in highschool had dated a student of his in the '70's and it was not abuse. Lets not throw the word around that only takes away its meaning, if an individual is being abused that is one thing BUT a senior(like Joelle was) entering a concentual relationship with a teacher of 24 is another. AGAIN, not saying its ok but saying there is a difference between "abuse" and a "taboo" relationship.

Joelle is CLEARLY innocent and her life has been uprooted and destroyed, do these "trust-worthy, Christian" boys have ANY idea of what they have done? I don't think so and SHAME on them and SHAME on the posters who have gone on about being from Glen Rose and how these are "trust worthy" boys from good, well respected families! You are as bad as those little PUNKS, covering up their lies b/c it wouldn't look very good if so and so's son had willingly participated in such activity. WAKE UP!!!! It NEVER happened those boys are LIARS, protected by their HYPOCRITICAL, PROMINANT PARENTS, the town is jumping on the band wagon its mob mentality plain and simple(no offense to those members of the town who are willing to look at the information presented and see that these boys are liars) and it is all together disgusting!

The word of a few little punks is trumping the word of a well respected teacher and it is nothing short of sickening! I hope Joelle sues the school board for all she can, I hope the boys and their parents have to pay hefty fines for her financial and emotional trouble AND above all else I hope the TRUTH comes out for once and all; I hope all 3 of those boys(yes I am including the moron who lied and then took it back) have to live with the shame.... nice to see them knocked off their pedestal!

Teachers are NOT paid nearly enough for all they are responsible for, they educate the next generation and at times it seems to be a thankless job. Heaven forbid they become friends with the kids b/c then they are vulnerable to lies and rumours(like in this case) and if they are stern then the kids hate them. It takes one angry kid to make one up one lie and that teacher's career, reputation and life are destroyed.

Parents remember YOUR kid  may grow up to be a teacher and think how awful it would be for them to have their career ripped away b/c of malicious lies, lets remember kids DO lie for many reasons(for fun, to stay out of trouble, to help a friend) and last lets keep in mind that your 17yr old while still a minor will be going off to college where he/she will be treated like and expected to act like an adult, prepare him or her by holding up a higher standard. If your kids have Christian values and are approaching adulthood then don't treat them like they are 6yr olds! IF and I say IF b/c those boys are lying beyond a shadow of a doubt, IF those boys had engaged in sexual activity with their teacher then why weren't the parents upset with their "good, trust-worthy, Christian" sons? They were old enough to know right from wrong, none of them seemed traumatized(Matt gloated and wrote a poem) and they all claimed they "knew" it was wrong but were "confused"...about what, how they got so lucky? The boys will be boys or they were innocent or they didn't know any better really doesn't fly when they are acting like martyrs yet admitting to already being sexually active(Matt), just plain lying(boy who recanted) or hiding their face and behind their mommy and their religion.  IF it had happened and they KNEW(as they claimed) it was wrong then a simple no and a talk with the principal would have settled it; That was NOT the case! These boys lied and on the off chance that I am dead wrong then they enjoyed every second UNTIL mommy found out then they contrived their little stories. To believe these boys is irresponsible, Matt even said "I didn't feel molested" well their is the proof in the pudding this is not a situation in which the teacher physically or emotionally over powered a student. They lied BUT if their story was true then they are just as guilty b/c they didn't feel molested, they knew it was wrong and still did it!

Joelle go gett'em!!!!! Boys, since you're so religious May God have mercy on your soul, you lying punks and may this all come back to bite you in the ass!

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: draydenx

Lets see she's accused, one boy retracted his statement because he said he lied about it, and now a second has been proven deceptive. I have friends who are teachers and are rather attractive and I can't tell you how many times I have heard them tell me of male students making threats of spreading sexual lies about them if they didn't give them a passing grade or to try and get out of something.  One friend has quit teaching entirely due to no actions taken by her reports of the threats and I for one changed my college major over stories like this. It freaking sick!! Stories like these are telling the students they can lie, and get away with it. I am glad that this teacher is fighting for what so far two out of three have managed to destroy. I just hope today's show doesn't ruin my view of this particular teacher.

One of my friends taught at the same high school that I did. She was washing her car one day and students took pictures of her and  posted them on the internet with some inappropriate comments. Guess who got into trouble? The teacher, of course! The parents wanted her fired and they supported the actions of their children. She was reprimanded for her "actions." The union was finally able to get administration to back down.

Things in this district have become so bad that teachers are now expected to report all encounters with students off campus and after school hours. Run into students while pumping gas into your car on the way to work and you have a lovely little report to fill out. Make sure to get plenty of witnesses who will swear under oath that nothing happened.

You brought out an excellant point - one boy wrote a poem and distributed it. He says that he only gave it to the teacher. Mule muffins! The Supreme Court won't let students grade each others paper because that may be a breach of confidentiality. No teacher would distribute a poem about a students abuse by an adult. If that boy continues to lie, his nose will grow so long that he will be poking people in Britain in the eye with it.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: niecyd84

I'm a high school teacher.  A few years back a student didn't like the response that I gave his friend (not him, that's really important here) who had asked me a question about the appropriateness of his shirt.  The student was wearing a shirt which depicted Osama Bin Ladden inside a gun telescope.  HIs friend asked me what I though and replied  honesty "You know, I don't ever think it's OK to promoted the killing of humans, but why not ask the assistant Principal".  MATT didn't like my response to his friend, Matt wasn't even involved in the conversation, I didn't even know that he was listening to this converation that  his friend had begun with me.  MATT began telling lies about me to everyone in the school that he could, most importantly, everyone who had power over me.  MATT had a 504 a FederalLegal document that said that he was to have certain accommodations made for him, and he began to INTENTIONALLY make my life miserable.  After 6 months of HELL, of having to defend my every move in the classroom, MATTS mother admitted to me that MATT was angry with me for what I said to his friend.  She knew this all along, he had admitted to her that he was INENTENTIONALLY trying to get me fired and she said "he's just  being a boy".  I had already decided that if I wasn't able to come to some agreement or understanding with Matt and/or his mother, and my job WAS BEING threatened at the time, that if I had lost my job I was going to sue this MATT for Slander and Leibel.  What I was put through was unacceptable, I was  just lucky that I had a department coordinator who believed me.  It becomes like a game to kids.  A kid who would do this doesn't care about my life or my job.  And for the record, his mother was a lawyer.

I hear you, loud and clear. I was harrassed by a student in special education. That gave this student a "legitimate excuse" for inappropriate sexual behavior towards any female at the school. The union couldn't do anything to protect me or the other female teachers. The administration wouldln't do anything because he was special ed. He brought in three times as much money from govenrment funding as regular ed students did. The district claimed to have a "zero-tolerance policy for harasment". RIght.
