(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

Wondering

I am wondering why this "innocent" teacher would ever give notes to young men.  At their age, even a second glance can create a possible hint , let alone the above mentioned.   I sensed a feeling from the teacher that she lacked the normal reaction to such a terrible fabrication.  In addition,  she did not  verbally attack the young man in question or display a reaction other than ,in my opinion, I did some of this but wish I had not.  I might also add I believe the basics of this seduction were probably known by her husband as he failed to display the reaction one would expect.  Regarding the lie detector tests, I believe any  person can be intimidated to the point of failing such a test.  In short,  some games were played by a teacher or couple and it simply went too far.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Those boy's should be ashamed of themselves.  You could totally tell that they were lying.  I know that this really happens and when it does the teacher should most definitely get in trouble.  But they destroyed her life, so that they would look like the liar-es that they are!

sex offends

Quote From: tonella_s

I think its disgusting and horrific that this abuse is happening in our world. Whether the teacher is a female or male they have manipulated their positon as a teacher by faking their role as a teacher who is supposed to be there for their students in academic wise, teaching them and preparing them for further studies and for the future that lies ahead whether they choose to go to university or just simply choose to work.  Instead they try and most succeed to gain and pursue their sexual fantasies. Shouldnt those teachers who commit this grossly act be classified as pedophiles ?

I BELIEVE that such predators should be publicly listed as parents can be  made aware of their behaviour so we can protect our children from falling into their mind playing, manipulative, seductive traps if should the law let us down and release them on some good behaviour bond or some form of community services instead of serving a resonable jail term for their crime. As a mother of 3, i would certainly be wary of any teacher that teaches my child and would want a full police check to be done and presented to each family of the students before they commence that year of school regardless what grade they are in.

In many states of Australia, those who are found guilty of sexual offense against a minor are put on the sexual offenders list, even for offences such as statutory rape. It was my belief that many states in the United States had the same system, as Australia policies are usually ‘borrow’. Doing this means they can never work with minors, ever.

teachers

Quote From: clizstuart

You brought out an excellant point - one boy wrote a poem and distributed it. He says that he only gave it to the teacher. Mule muffins! The Supreme Court won't let students grade each others paper because that may be a breach of confidentiality. No teacher would distribute a poem about a students abuse by an adult. If that boy continues to lie, his nose will grow so long that he will be poking people in Britain in the eye with it.
I was thinking about becomng a science teacher, later if I couldnt get a job in the field I desire. Makes me thinks twice about teaching a bunch of immature teenagers.
I'm an aunty to an 11 and 10 year boys and when they acuse anyone of doing anything wrong, I always question them first, expecially the 11 years old. His parent might think his innnocent and repeatly give him the benefit of the doubt, but experence has shown me that he lies when it suits him, and when he should tell a white lie to defend someone's integrity he doesn't. Maybe I'm expecting a bit more maturity from an 11 year old, but I wouldnt trust them or any teenager with a 10 foot pole, and that frankly is a sad admission. When ever a teenager acuses someone of foul play, maybe they should be question first. After all what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. When a woman is raped the police constantly ask her the same question, to make sure her story doesn't change, is it hard to expect the same Scrutiny from teenage accuses.

Glen Rose Citizens

Quote From: coppertin

Apparently not everyone knows these boys because it is obvious that you do not.  I know each of these boys and their families.  My children went to school with them and I consider them to be truthful and trust-worthy.  Has anyone thought about the fact that she married her high school science teacher shortly after her own graduation?  It seems that a teacher/student relationship didn't bother her then.  Makes you think, doesn't it?

Your comment makes me think that you have your head in the sand.  Continuing to blame this teacher is disgusting.  IT is so obvious that "sticking" together is more important than honesty and morality.  I hope this teacher moves to a community that isn't as ignorant and backwater as yours.  You should all be ashamed of yourselves!

Amen

Quote From: gina82

Lets see Boy # 1 recanted his story b/c he is a LIAR!

Boy # 2 is a sad, pathetic MAMA'S BOY who failed the lie detector test and as we found out at the end of part 2, this "good Christian" boy has decided maybe he had more sex with her and forgot about it. B.S. more like mommy started to freak out b/c she believed his lies, his reputation is on the line and he had to say something to the millions of ppl who saw him FAIL the test. If he is being honest and Glen Rose where he resides is so small then why is he hiding and why did mommy say he can't show his face. So COWARDLY LIAR.

Next we have MATT, the COCKY, ARROGANT LIAR, he thought he could go on T.V. and further his lies. HMMM....as others have said NO MAN FORGETS HIS FIRST OR LAST BLOW JOB, so enough with his inconsistent lies. This little punk was probably jerking it her every night wrote a little poem and when he was caught had to make himself out to be the poor innocent kid. Also, I do not go screaming from the hill tops that I am Christian( I am Catholic and I do not think it makes me a better person), yet this punk does. Well, let me point out this "good, stand up, Christian" boy admitted to having sex with 1 woman already at the age of 16. At 16 I was a virgin, so it strikes me as odd that someone who had already had sex at the age of 16, would go playing the "I'm a Christian" card.

Now on to all those claiming that since Joelle married her highschool science teacher she was abused...he didn't look THAT much older than her. If she was say 16 or 17 and it was his first or second year teaching then I hardly call that abuse. These days we act like a 16yr old is a 6yr old and can't be held accountable for their actions. I am NOT saying that teacher/student relationships are a positive thing BUT in the past they were not as big of a deal b/c ppl didn't act like a 16 or 17yr old was incapable of making decisions. I know in the 1970's it wasn't frowned upon, my fave teacher in highschool had dated a student of his in the '70's and it was not abuse. Lets not throw the word around that only takes away its meaning, if an individual is being abused that is one thing BUT a senior(like Joelle was) entering a concentual relationship with a teacher of 24 is another. AGAIN, not saying its ok but saying there is a difference between "abuse" and a "taboo" relationship.

Joelle is CLEARLY innocent and her life has been uprooted and destroyed, do these "trust-worthy, Christian" boys have ANY idea of what they have done? I don't think so and SHAME on them and SHAME on the posters who have gone on about being from Glen Rose and how these are "trust worthy" boys from good, well respected families! You are as bad as those little PUNKS, covering up their lies b/c it wouldn't look very good if so and so's son had willingly participated in such activity. WAKE UP!!!! It NEVER happened those boys are LIARS, protected by their HYPOCRITICAL, PROMINANT PARENTS, the town is jumping on the band wagon its mob mentality plain and simple(no offense to those members of the town who are willing to look at the information presented and see that these boys are liars) and it is all together disgusting!

The word of a few little punks is trumping the word of a well respected teacher and it is nothing short of sickening! I hope Joelle sues the school board for all she can, I hope the boys and their parents have to pay hefty fines for her financial and emotional trouble AND above all else I hope the TRUTH comes out for once and all; I hope all 3 of those boys(yes I am including the moron who lied and then took it back) have to live with the shame.... nice to see them knocked off their pedestal!

Teachers are NOT paid nearly enough for all they are responsible for, they educate the next generation and at times it seems to be a thankless job. Heaven forbid they become friends with the kids b/c then they are vulnerable to lies and rumours(like in this case) and if they are stern then the kids hate them. It takes one angry kid to make one up one lie and that teacher's career, reputation and life are destroyed.

Parents remember YOUR kid  may grow up to be a teacher and think how awful it would be for them to have their career ripped away b/c of malicious lies, lets remember kids DO lie for many reasons(for fun, to stay out of trouble, to help a friend) and last lets keep in mind that your 17yr old while still a minor will be going off to college where he/she will be treated like and expected to act like an adult, prepare him or her by holding up a higher standard. If your kids have Christian values and are approaching adulthood then don't treat them like they are 6yr olds! IF and I say IF b/c those boys are lying beyond a shadow of a doubt, IF those boys had engaged in sexual activity with their teacher then why weren't the parents upset with their "good, trust-worthy, Christian" sons? They were old enough to know right from wrong, none of them seemed traumatized(Matt gloated and wrote a poem) and they all claimed they "knew" it was wrong but were "confused"...about what, how they got so lucky? The boys will be boys or they were innocent or they didn't know any better really doesn't fly when they are acting like martyrs yet admitting to already being sexually active(Matt), just plain lying(boy who recanted) or hiding their face and behind their mommy and their religion.  IF it had happened and they KNEW(as they claimed) it was wrong then a simple no and a talk with the principal would have settled it; That was NOT the case! These boys lied and on the off chance that I am dead wrong then they enjoyed every second UNTIL mommy found out then they contrived their little stories. To believe these boys is irresponsible, Matt even said "I didn't feel molested" well their is the proof in the pudding this is not a situation in which the teacher physically or emotionally over powered a student. They lied BUT if their story was true then they are just as guilty b/c they didn't feel molested, they knew it was wrong and still did it!

Joelle go gett'em!!!!! Boys, since you're so religious May God have mercy on your soul, you lying punks and may this all come back to bite you in the ass!

I wonder how long the two liars would remain in that category if they were facing 160 years in jail for telling their lies and not being grownup enough to tell the truth after so many years have passed.

The life of a wife, mother and teacher has been ruined because of them.  The school board is a joke because they are aware of the reputations of the boys involved and never really questioned them at all.

There is no way I would subject myself to the punishment teachers are expected to accept, smile, and make no waves.

If they'd let the powers that be at school in K-6 give 2-3 swats for bad behavior, some of the things that take place during the formative years would never happen later.  Many teachers are nothing but babysitters because parents are too busy to get involved in their childs life.

Poly Graphs/ matts comment

I took a polygraph many years ago i took 2 .One was conducted by the police department which had the new computerized electrodes. and the older version. Both which i passed with flying colors. Before the test i was given the opportunity to review the questions being asked and make any comments i wanted so the questions could be answered truthfully. If the 2 boys passed and now failed i would wonder what types of questions were asked before they agreed to take the test with you DR.Phil. Matt's comment of "You married your High School teacher" Leaves me a bit confused. Was this in fact a way to justify the perpetuated lies already? A smoke screen perhaps. If in fact the boys have changed or added to their story isnt that a perculair rsponse of keeping the lie going? and i say this with expierence . My neice was RAPED by her father from 18mos old to 5 years when i took custody of her. Through out the investigation My neice told her story 15 different times and NEVER waivered or changed the outcome. and trust me the investigators tried. Being 18 now she still can remeber the details, You almost seemd upset when the teacher showed no emotion, once being in her position I can relate. there comes a time when emotions are no longer available and you are just defensive. Remember she has been battling this for 5 long ass years. There comes a time when you just feel drained and always on the defensive. I bet that you will see the light when u READ ALL the transcripts and make a informed judgement.

Inapproriate Behavior

Several thing stuck out in my head as I watched this show.  The teacher had no business inviting the boy to her home. You don't place yourself in a situation like this without red signals going off.  What she was guilty of was unprofessional behavior.  Slipping coded notes to the boy?  Grown people should be engaging in this behavior. Just one more red flag!

I don't know if she was guilty of any sexual behavior with the boy or not.  She was guily of inappropriate behavior and setting herself up for any accuasations to come her way.  She was the adult here and I am glad she was released from the school.  She should have known better.

Connect?

Quote From: angelhunter

Teachers connect with students. And though the notes do seem iffy out of context , as a teacher I must say...you don't spend your days interacting thinking would a jury consider this and indication of guilt. Now that I look back there probably are some interactions...hugs, copliments, gifts etc...that although truly harmless, would be used against me I am certain if a student decided to let ther imagination and mouth go to far...these guys got in a way over their head...the lie took on a life of its own and now she's paying. A note does not indicate sexual conduct....trust me. As far as her composure...Dr. Phil and that boy are lucky she didn't do exactly what I would have done which is reach over and slap the lies out of his mouth for putting her family in danger of loosing a mother and a wife. Shame on that punk.

You say that teachers connect with students.  That is fine as long as they connect in the classroom and not outside the school.  Don't you think it was odd for her to invite him over to her home?  I have never heard or teacher slipping special coded note to boys in her classroom.  Where there is smoke there is fire and she provided the smoke!

lawsuit

Quote From: w000036

Did Joelle every take a polygraph??? I did not see yesterdays program and I just saw part of todays.
There is litagation going on right now, she was advised by her attorney NOT to take the polygraph, and trust me you do as the attorney tells you.

I was in high school 45 years ago and remember as clear as if it was yesterday listening to 3 male friends talking about the science teacher and wanting to "do her", when one pipes up "I did her",  they didn't but that is exactly how things get out of control when you say something stupid, hormones are very high in teenagers and impressing each other is a very high priority, they never do think of the outcome of silly banter.  If they recant now she can go for the jugular, they have to stick to this story of theirs no matter how it changes, their parents will be open for a civil lawsuit.

Why I believe her is no one who is guily would subject themselves to this kind of scrunity, you would be under a microscope to find anything done wrong, and she went ahead with this knowing that could happen because she is innocent, if I was guilty of this and the charges were dropped I'd slink away to never be seen again, but if I was innocent I'd fight like she is doing, and Dr Phil, please just because she didn't display whatever emotion you think is right for this situation means nothing, we're all different in our emotions, this has been going on for years, I'm sure she is emotionally spent, give her a break, her  life and reputation were slandered by stupidity and hormones.
