(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

I took a polygraph many years ago i took 2 .One was conducted by the police department which had the new computerized electrodes. and the older version. Both which i passed with flying colors. Before the test i was given the opportunity to review the questions being asked and make any comments i wanted so the questions could be answered truthfully. If the 2 boys passed and now failed i would wonder what types of questions were asked before they agreed to take the test with you DR.Phil. Matt's comment of "You married your High School teacher" Leaves me a bit confused. Was this in fact a way to justify the perpetuated lies already? A smoke screen perhaps. If in fact the boys have changed or added to their story isnt that a perculair rsponse of keeping the lie going? and i say this with expierence . My neice was RAPED by her father from 18mos old to 5 years when i took custody of her. Through out the investigation My neice told her story 15 different times and NEVER waivered or changed the outcome. and trust me the investigators tried. Being 18 now she still can remeber the details, You almost seemd upset when the teacher showed no emotion, once being in her position I can relate. there comes a time when emotions are no longer available and you are just defensive. Remember she has been battling this for 5 long ass years. There comes a time when you just feel drained and always on the defensive. I bet that you will see the light when u READ ALL the transcripts and make a informed judgement.

OMG!!  This one better post!!!!!! Matt is a cocky, arrogant liar. When a child is in trouble they often blurt out something their sibling did thinking that it is worse than what they  did and that their parents will forget all about punishing him or her and go after the sibling.

Joelle's marriage did not need to be brought up but after failing the polygraph and fumbling over details, changing his story and not being clear on when or if he moved a piano(even though another boy testified to that fact), Matt just blurted out something that in his mind was scandalous in hopes that it would deflect the attention off him.

Teacher Sex Scandals

Hi,

I watched both parts of this program and I have questions about both teacher and students.

I could be wrong, but the male who was on your program said he had a previous truth test done, and so did the teacher. Both said they passed the first one. Personally, I would of liked to see the teacher take on for the show also instead of her lawyers not to take another one. This way, I think more clarity would of been there. I found both suspicious in areas and both good in areas.

I personally will give the benifit of the doubt to the teacher at this time. But if it is proven she is guilty at some point then she must pay the consequences.

Another question, why do women get lighter sentences for these crimes then men? I think they should both get the same since they are both pedophiles.

Sincerely,

jesse james

Whose telling the truth?

If the jury was deadlocked, I can see why. On the first show, I thought the teacher was a victim of a cruel teenage prank that got out of hand. Now, I am not so convinced after I heard the boy speak on part 2.  At first he was so convincing with his affirmative answers and direct eye contact, and then he waffled in his story about the piano.  But, I also found it interesting that the teacher's rebuttal to his explicit account of their sexual interlude was "OK, he's lying the lights were not turned off"...She should have said "what..my hands were never down your pants, why are you lying about this? You've ruined my life!!"  Or something like that-she had her opportunity. That would have made a big difference on my perception of this situation.

I was left feeling that something did happen that was inappropriate, but then wondered if it did. We need a part 3 to find out who the truth teller is. How does one determine 'truth' in a situation like this? There is a truth that exists, so why is it so hard to find?

innocent

I dont see how people can just assume that she is guilty without even knowing her. And how can you say just lock her up, she has 2 kids and you dont know if shes guilty or not, have a little more compassion. I went to school at Glen Rose Tx..  Mrs. Ogletree was my french and english teacher, I graduated with the 3 boys that aquesed her and I am 100% sure that Mrs. Ogletree is inoccent. I think that she befriended her students and got involved with their lives, she was young and could relate to alot of them. I think the boys are living in a fantasy world and I dont see how they could ever take it this far. I hope that Mrs. Ogletree's life will be a little better after the show.

hi

I strongly agree with you  on this one I think that she is innocent  and that the student who has acused her is strongly lieing about everything . she should be able to keep on teaching .

fietkau2

I mean I watched the show and my husband did as well and we both agree that she is innocent.

unfairness

Quote From: gina82

What really caught my attention about your post was the fact that rape victims are asked the same question repeatedly to ensure their story never changes, and believe when I say you can't be fuzzy about ANY detail no matter how small.

I was raped by two men and I was interogatted! Not only did the police have DNA evidence, my room mate on record in regards to what she heard and countless pictures taken by the police of bruises and marks on my body some in the shape of a hand BUT I still had to answer the same questions over and over. NOTHING happened to these boys, the police woman handeling it had this to say to me, " ...these boys seem really nice.." I could not believe that after all I had done, all I had been through the police were protecting the guilty parties.

The legal system protects the guilty and harrasses the innocent, and that is DISGUSTING. Joelle is the VICTIM of lies that have ruined her life and has had to fight to keep her teaching license yet is still out of work, is in debt, has a tarnished reputation and her kids have to live with these lies. Yet, its just peachy for the boys to be inconsistent, no one calls them liars, its just fine and dandy that they aren't traumatized nor have they been affected in anyway. WHY AREN'T THESE BOYS SCRUTINIZED, WHY IS IT NOT A BIG DEAL WHEN THE DETAILS CHANGE?????  They have nothing but he said she said hear say and they have tons of support; where as a rape victim(myself for example) can have DNA evidence, physical evidence(bruises and marks), and they get nothing but a never ending line of questions and  accussations of lying about these "nice" boys(yeah thats why I couldn't sleep in my own room).

Matt and the Mama's boy need to have some idea of what Joelle is going through, they need to be questioned in a more abrassive manner, not this coddling they've been getting. The whole thing makes me sick and is a reminder of how flawed our legal system is.

In the height of racism discrimination against people of Lebanese origin in Sydney Australia a few years back a young man got a 66 years sentence for gang rape. What he and his friends and members of his family did was nothing but animal like. Sadly you would think in this modern age that it not to ask for every crime of this nature be treated in the same manner. Why is it Authorizes choose to put all their effort into some cases and not others.

So what if the boys were nice. Look at the all the serial killers and serial rapist the great majority look like nice people. some 25-30 years ago in south Australia  a few boys were killed and sexually assaulted in the most vial disgusting way, even the father of one of the boys didn’t know what to call his son killer, do you call then humans-no, do you call then- animal (The Butchered boys case) - no even animals wouldn't do such deplorable acts. I wouldn’t even call these types of dirt, because frankly dirt is much to nice a word.

Are the boys going to be charged for perjury, or false allegations, they did after all not pass a lie detector. These boys knew what they were doing when they made the allegation. Like I said earlier that victim of rape, are integrated when they accuse someone of rape, this may be because many have falsely accused many a man before of rape, when this wasn’t true. I have a friend who was in the same situation. Only the Police here in Sydney didn’t question this girl enough, because it didn’t take them long before my friends was taken to the police station for questioning.

Why isn’t it the same when a baby faced, religious boy from a ‘good’ family when he accuses a teacher of sexual assault. The world is in need of good teachers, no one want be a teacher anymore. It was once thought as a privileged position, now not nearly as much people respect teaching enough to become teachers. I hope she sue’s the school board and the thrusting families for all their worth.

Not sure what to think?

I think that She must have been flirty with the boys in someway, otherwise I can't see them going to all of that trouble to say they had had sex with her. I am not all together sure it didn't happen or at least some of it! She acted very strange and non responsive to the accusations againist her. If I had been accused of what she has been accused of, I would be outraged and a whole lot more verbal in how it all had effected me and my family. In my opinion she is out for a hefty lawsuit....... that is why she didn't say more than she did!

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: right_is_right

She is the 2nd teacher with in 3 years that has been fired from the Glen Rose district for having inappropriate relations with a student.  That teacher went on his way and she should too.

Just because she spent a bunch of money on a high priced lawyer to get her acquited does not mean she's innocent.  For example, we all know OJ is guilty for a double murder, but he was found not guilty in a court of law due to her expensive defense team.  Money can and will get you out of most any jam.

"Just because she spent a bunch of money on a high priced lawyer to get her acquited does not mean she's innocent. "

Is that so? I'm pleased you're not a judge. Or are you? Having a high-priced lawyer ALSO doesn't mean she was GUILTY, either. If she'd had some idiotic court-appointed hack, I'd just about guarrantee the only thing that wouldn't have happened to her was that she would've been flogged in the town square. Those boys lied through their teeth, period!

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: innocent5

so did you know the boy that took back his story?  I grew up with him since I was 5.  The other two boys were little punks in highschool.  Matt damn sure is not trustworthy and the other one well I have a lot to say about that family but I won't.  The only good person in this was the boy that took back his story and admitted he lied.

Looking at Matt, reminded me of a boy I went to school with. He wasn't very attractive to the girls in fact didn't even have a g/f. but according to him he had made it with every girl in school. He seemed to think if he said it out loud everyone would believe him. What a putz.

I just don't think she did it

I just think that sadly these days teacher/student relationships are so common that you are going to get kids saying these things happened when they didn't. And as this case shows everyone will always believe the student. Dr. Phil kept saying he didn't understand her reactions, that she should be more angry instead of pointing out little things that she says these boys lied about. This has been going on for years now, I think she has been angry and is still angry but I think she did the right thing by sitting on that stage pointing out all the flaws in the stories. Obviously she thinks they are liars. She doesn't need to set on the stage and argue with this boy about how he's a liar. I think she is innocent. If she had sat on that stage however and just kept repeating herself about how innocent she was, and calling this boy and the others liars I don't know if I would have believed her or not. She only had so much air time and I think she spent it well. By stating facts and  flaws in the boy's stories and even though she didn't show anger I'm sure it's there.

Boys definitely lied.....

I think they were bragging about things they wished happened and they thought the teacher was hot. I think things then became so huge they were afraid to look back to tell the truth. When I was a freshmen in highschool I had atleast 5 guys say they had sex with me even though none of them did. (These are just the ones I know about, I am sure others said they did too once talk started.) The boy who first started it was a senior and he was my friends brother and another friends boyfriend, we all rode together to a football game and supposebly it happened then. When the girls confronted him about it and told him to tell everybody the truth none of the guys would believe it did not happen. Some mean girls kept it going out of meanness because I was pretty. People will believe anything they want to be true. I have 4 kids. My teens a boy and a girl are taught by me and my husband to not believe the things people label kids at school with and to not pass along gossip. The other 2 are taught this as well, but they are young enough they don't have to deal with this yet.
