(Original Air Date: 11/01/07) Dr. Phil explores a disturbing trend: Female teachers engaging in sex acts with their underage male students. The number of accusations has doubled in the past five years. You've probably heard of famous cases like Mary Kay Letourneau, and Debra LaFave and the recent case of a teacher in Southern California, Meredith Johnson Vincent, who was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. Dr. Phil meets one teacher who has chosen to fight back. Joelle Ogletree was a respected high school French teacher until she was accused of sexual misconduct by three of her students. Find out what goes through a mother's head as she faces 160 years in prison. Plus, the Dr. Phil show speaks with one of the boys who says the sexual improprieties absolutely did happen and claims he passed a polygraph examination. When he agrees to take another test for Dr. Phil, what do his answers reveal? Joelle has been banned from even volunteering at her daughter's school because of the accusations. Should she be allowed back in the classroom? Watch and decide: Do you believe her ... or her students? Tell us what you think!

Find out what happened on the show.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: robsharon

I just finished watching the "Teacher sex scandal show" tonight and can't help but admire the teacher for standing up for her rights. So many of us would wilt under such pressure from the "community" . Bravo to her and her husband.
My hope is that she gets her job back and she sues the school board so she can retire for the rest of her life. In addition the students should be punished as adults, and be responsible for once in their lives for their actions.
Sue the school board, are you serious??   Retire for the rest of her life?  She is trying to ride the high horse and get her JOB BACK.   Even if the accusations are false, as a teacher, she should be doing everything she can to prevent even a possibility of such an accusation?   Have the kids at her house?  Drive around with them alone in her car?   Is she nuts?   If a kid needs medication, they go to the nurse who calls the parent.   You don't take a kid home....not one of the opposite sex!    As for suing the school board, yes, that would just solve everything.   Let's take MORE money out of the education system so that we can punish the other teachers and staff who already have limited budgets.   Let's just punish the rest of the student body as well...."sorry kids, there will be no sports, no PE, no music or art programs this year due to lack of funds"..... but that French teacher sure is sittin pretty!    When did we get so sue crazy?  You want the kids to be responsible for their actions, the teachers should be responsible for theirs as well.   She is guity of impropriety, if not sex crimes against minors.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

Quote From: thatstrue

That's whats wrong with our youth. You should be ashamed. HE WAS MARRIED  No morals
Thats whats wrong with our adults!   The teacher should be ashamed.  HE WAS MARRIED.  He took the vows and broke them.  This student didnt break any vows.  Neither the teacher (adult) nor the student (child, no matter how much she claims not to be) have morals in this situation.   How can we expect our youth to have morals, when, too often, the parents and teachers have none?   Lead by example, people!    I cant even believe you would post that B.S. response to this girls post.  Unbelievable.

11/01 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 1

I like what Dr. Phil brought up.  He can remember his "first time" and things like that & he is quite a bit older than Matt.  So am I!  I can remember my first real kiss, the name of the boy & what was going on at the time it happened!  I can remember very vivid details of ALL my experiences...course I'm sure someone will say, "Oh, that's cause you're a woman" or "That's just you".  I don't think so!

I was sexually & physically abused for many years.  Try as hard as I might, I can't forget.  So I'm sure that if these boys were really telling the truth, they would be much more clearer on their statements.  Like real dates/times & all the rest.  I'm not totally buying their stories.

I do wish however that Dr. Phil would have had access to the transcripts of their testimonies.  I'm dying to know if they really did change their stories as much as she claimed they were.  It wouldn't shock me.

Now, I'm not saying she is totally innocent.  She should have made darned sure that ALL OF HER actions were above board.  Not be alone with them EVER, not use "coded" messages", and not invite them to her home to help her or anything like that.  It's a sad thing that teachers must go that far, but that is the way society is now.  Students can cry foul & your whole career can be over...regardless of whether they are telling the truth or not.  I'm not saying we should never believe students, but there must be proof and a balance.  Otherwise no teacher is safe, and neither are the students.

Too picky???

Quote From: hightshoehome

I think Matt was telling the truth.  Joella was too picky on the non important facts of the case and didn't become emotional at his accusations.  I don't put a lot of credit in lie detector tests, even the expert ones.  Why would this boy make all this up?  I'm sure he didn't want his parents to know about it at the time it happened, so he would have kept it under his lid if he had his way.  This woman married her high school teacher, and not a good looking one at that, compared to her beauty.  Doesn't that mean something?  To go for a guy old enough to be her teacher says there's something a little weird there.  She looked sneaky, and I feel she just lucked out in this case.

im a teenager myself and i can see straight through the lies of these guys.... teenage boys are naturally sexual beings... they made up fantasies... it irritates me that people think she is lying because she isnt emotional.. this obviously happened a while ago since one or more of the boys have since graduated.   she has probably got no tears left for this.. after a while you just begin to analyze fact rather than cry about it... i think she is brave,

i pity her

as a high school senior i have a teacher who is pretty and smart a lot of the guys flirt with her and a lot of girls joke with her.  she does silly things like write notes to students but not encrypted ones... that was stupid on joelles  part, but she was telling them of something she did as a young person.  and to all those who think that a little girl complaining is the complete truth as well as the boys then they are stupid as well.  as a girl i think i can see how a girl would be upset if the guy she liked was hot on the teacher, and that could lead her to complaining because she didnt like the teacher getting her attention from the cute guys.  on the other hand, sometimes young women who are teachers have a tendency to be sweet and overly friendly to students (male and female) in order to be liked and teachers really should realize that their job is not to be a friend its to teach and positively influence.. part of this situation was brought upon joelle by her actions, but i still think it is unfair that she is sill being persecuted by a lie.  another thing is that 14 year old guys like sex and thinking about sex because they are not experienced as the well shouldnt be.  and any 14 year old boy can make up a detailed fantasy about someone including a teacher.

Here is the transcript.  As I posted on the Part 2 messageboard, it is an easy and gripping read.  It' s like getting the DVD with the deleted scenes included and extra bonus features.  I would recommend starting here.  If you want to test the waters, on page 75 is the "Findings of Fact."

Boy was obviously lying

Teachers (I am a retired teacher) are at the mercy of any student who wishes to "get back" at them.  Society seems very quick to believe the child.  When the young man came on stage and began his story, I told my husband that I believed he was lying.  After teaching for 34 years and raising a child, I could tell from his eyes that he was not being truthful.  Seldom are the eyes wrong!  It is sad that she will forever be labeled in this narrow minded town.  I am not usually in favor of many lawsuits, but I do believe she should find a GOOD lawyer and sue the school board for back salary, for punitive damages that it still is inflicting by not allowing her to go to her child's school, and to sue the students' parents for punitive damages.  They have destroyed her career, and it has possibly placed a strain on her marriage.  I worked w/two male teachers who were accused of misconduct.  One was by a girl who later admitted she lied.  But he lost a year of work, and eventually he and his wife divorced.  The other was a young man accused of teacher of touching him, and if it had not been for a neighbor coming forward stating that they were both working in their yards that particular evening, he would have suffered thru a trial.  How sad that this is allowed to occur.

Perfect

Quote From: rustynoid

Think about it, if she were guilty of doing this, why would she be still fighting this battle and putting herself and her husband through this hell?  You would think she would be happy to get off with a mis-trial, not argue that she wanted to go through another trial.

If a guilty person gets off on any type of technicality, they don't usually still fight to go through it again, because maybe this time they will be found guilty and go to prison!  She would be thrilled to get away with it and try to drop the topic ASAP, not putting herself up to more scrutiny by going on national TV.  How many murders who get off go on TV saying "I want another trial so they can find me guilty this time"?  It just doesn't make sense to me.  Yet, I seem to be the only one noticing this.

Exactly, you took the words right out of my mouth. I went to Glen Rose, and graduated with the 3 students. I feel exactly the same way.

Who is innocent?

I saw the 2 part series over the last 2 days. I am utterly disgusted that the US school system can take such actions against this teacher. She has by all means breached boundaries and has left herself open to these allegations in some ways. I don't understand how this teacher would have access to these boy's home phone numbers - what has happened in regards to confidentiality laws? In Australia this information is privileged information and the access to the data is limited.

I do not condone this behaviour in any way. The body language of "Matt" was enough to suggest that he was being deceptive. The floating eye contact when Dr Phil was asking him questions was enough to suggest that the information being provided in his answers were confabulated.

I feel sympathy for both Joelle and her husband/family in this situation. I wish her well with her law suit against the school system. I hope that she realises that the compensation will not heal her wounds. It has been a difficult learning curve to experience. These boys should be charged with perjury for all of the false accusations and allegations that have been made.
