(Original Air Date: 11/02/07) Dr. Phil continues his look at a teacher sex scandal that has a school and families divided in a small town in Texas. High school teacher Joelle Ogletree faces accusations of sexual misconduct with some of her male students. Joelle claims she's completely innocent but reluctantly agrees to face Matt, one of her accusers, in person. When Dr. Phil drills down into the details of the case, it's her word against his. Matt maintains that when Joelle was his high school French teacher, she came on to him. He says that as a student he received sexually explicit notes from her, but that the notes were written in code. See the encrypted messages and judge for yourself: Are they provocative or harmless? Then hear how Joelle and Matt interpret them. Plus, Matt agreed to take a polygraph test and have the results reviewed by an independent examiner. Find out what the test reveals and how Matt reacts when he hears them read aloud, as he sits face to face with Joelle. Hear both sides of this gripping sex scandal from the accuser and the accused, and judge for yourself if justice has been served. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Taboo!

It finally dawned on me why these boys lied about having sex with their teacher after I found out she married her own high school teacher.  When I was in high school in the late 70's, the head cheerleader married a much older chemistry teacher right after she graduated. We were all shocked because A  - The thought of marrying an older man was creepy when we were 15-years-old.  B - Teachers are not real people, they are mysterious aliens that don't have sex.  C - We all secretly wished we were her because who hasn't had a sexual fantasy or two about their chemistry teacher?  In high school I pretty much fantasized about every male teacher I had, with the exception of old man Mr. Rickert and his rancid breath.

The other thing that struck me was the fact that these boys come from prominent families.  What happens when you're rich, young, and bored in a small town in Texas?  You go looking for trouble.

BTW, I am an OK looking 47-year-old high school teacher and I have male students who sometimes flirt with me.   I am hardly anyone's idea of a fantasy girl so perhaps flirting with teachers of the opposite sex, in high school, is part of growing up.  Teachers have to be extremely cautious, especially if they are fun, caring, and attractive, which Joelle clearly is.  I wish her all the best.

Teacher as mentor

During our teenage life we do look to our teachers as fantasy and curious about her/him. We are spellbound with what they say and do at that age.. I believe 50% is teachers responsibility and 50% is the parents to bring out what they do in the child. Miss Ogletree should have known better being a mom and a wife. She was ignorant about the outcome, whether she is guilty or not. She did put herself out there in front of the vulnerable teenage students. Her story just does not add up and she is beating about the bush. She examined Matt like she was a lawyer and she sounds manipulative. It's tricky but I feel she is the accused.

To Wendy WA

What?  Sending coded notes is not wrong?  Where the heck is your brain.  He was a teenager.  Who the heck is the adult here and why are they using children to move a piano.  I think her husband is helping her cover up.  He wants to keep his little highschool lay!

Wendy-WA

You and I are definately on the same page.....I agree with every one of your replies. The teacher and her husband are both a little on the sick and wrong side. The teacher knew what she was doing, she's an adult......the kid, he' s a kid, and that's exactly why the law expects adults to act like adults, which she didn't especially with the "codes". The " I wish you could be funnier Matt" was the kicker.  IT was like you couldn't come up with something better than that? C'mon Dr. Phil, you don't like liars anymore than we do and you should have called her on that one. She' s a joke, and she got caught. And now she has to sue the school for money cuz nobdoy will hire her.

11/02 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 2

I think that the teacher is 100% innocent. Hello...both of those boys failed a polygraph test and fumbled over and over when telling their story! I think that these boys fantasized about their teacher and someone overheard what they were talking about and were confronted about it. Instead of looking like horny perverted 15 year old boys, they decided to put the blame on their teacher to save themselves. I think things just spiraled out of control from there. I doubt that any of the boys wanted to take it this far, but when things started escalating, they didn't want to go back on what they said. I think it was quite clear that this teacher is innocent. I feel bad for her because her life will never be the same. She will always have that stigma. Shame on these boys for ruining her life. I really hope that she will be able to be a teacher again.

Matt was very well prepared in what he would say and he could be given an Emmy for his performance.  Oh, but with a couple exceptions:   He completely fell apart when Joelle and Dr. Phil asked him about how long the kiss was (didn't remember if it was short or long), and completely faltered when asked about the day he moved the piano.  During those times Matt couldn't look at Dr. Phil at all.
I don't remember exact details of my escapades when I was sixteen, maybe it's a guy thing.  I would have a clear memory if it was with someone special though.

Quote From: tjones1107

Joelle and Doug were married before she finished college. As a matter of fact, they were married I'm pretty sure before she started her second year at college. She wasn't any older than 20 (and thats pushing it) when her and Doug exchanged vows!!
So who do you believe the student or Joelle?

11/02 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 2

Quote From: mnoble82

I think that they boy is lying. He could not get his story straight. I believe the Joelle to the fullest. The look on her face told the truth. Educators are supposed to be very trustworthy, I trust her.

Read the transcript again, which is on this site.  You will see that the student 's story makes more sense.  You will also see why he sounds like he is fumbling...because the teacher keeps trying to make him sound like he's lying...and she does a good job on the video, but after reading it, he sounds perfectly legit.  She put him on the ropes...and she made him start ducking and dodging, when in reality we should have been focused on her.  The student accuses her of having sex with him, and her response is about her car headlight?...that doesn't make sense.  Then she explains the coded notes...and if you look at what she says they mean compared to what the student says there is no doubt the students answers make more sense.  She is a professional manipulator, and a master of her craft...enjoy analyzing it...it's absolutely amazing people like this exist.

11/02 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 2

Quote From: bc20000

This IS anyone's business who wishes to make it their business!  Who are you to say it's not!  I am so tired of people using that line.  Who are you to say what someone should or shouldn't make their business?

You don't know when or how her and her husband began dating, thusly you have absolutely no right to judge. And also, the very fact that she married her HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER proves that she is attracted to the older demographic rather than the younger. Who are you to judge, it's her life, and she did what she did. Just because you find it wrong doesn't make it so. She could have started a relationship with him AFTER she graduated.

It has nothing to do with the case at all, it's just an attack at her personal life.
