(Original Air Date: 11/02/07) Dr. Phil continues his look at a teacher sex scandal that has a school and families divided in a small town in Texas. High school teacher Joelle Ogletree faces accusations of sexual misconduct with some of her male students. Joelle claims she's completely innocent but reluctantly agrees to face Matt, one of her accusers, in person. When Dr. Phil drills down into the details of the case, it's her word against his. Matt maintains that when Joelle was his high school French teacher, she came on to him. He says that as a student he received sexually explicit notes from her, but that the notes were written in code. See the encrypted messages and judge for yourself: Are they provocative or harmless? Then hear how Joelle and Matt interpret them. Plus, Matt agreed to take a polygraph test and have the results reviewed by an independent examiner. Find out what the test reveals and how Matt reacts when he hears them read aloud, as he sits face to face with Joelle. Hear both sides of this gripping sex scandal from the accuser and the accused, and judge for yourself if justice has been served. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Puzzled

I'd like to start by saying I don't recall if the polygraph reported on the truthfulness of the kissing incident.  The main point I'd like to make is her version of the first two notes meaning.  What's the point of adding extra words to a note designed for not just secrecy but in my opinion abbreviation? (ie. to God and Matt)  The age difference between her and her husband could mean she prefers older men or she's intrigued by age differences period or she could even have been wondering what she missed out on by marrying an older man.  It's up for speculation I suppose.  I believe she took some liberties with her students but they were grossly exaggerreated.

teacher sex scandal

There was something about Joelle right up front that led me to believe she was truly a victim here.

Then when I heard Matt tell what he had experienced with her, I was so hoping that he failed the polygraph

and at the same time trying to understand why he was trying to discredit her, ruin her reputation, and

was in agreement with the school that she be fired.

It wasn't until the last 4 minutes of the show that I got my answer, when he made sure the world knew

she had married one of her school teachers.  Small town mentality that has nothing more to do than

judge and gossip and once the ball got rolling they had to lie to save face. And

I think Matt didn't having anything going for him so he made up the story, told his friends as if it were true,

then when it all went to court, he couldn't back down.

I disagree with Dr Phil that Joelle should have fallen apart when Matt made his accusations. I think her staying in control of her emotions kept her from giving the control to Matt.

Dr.Phil blew it

Why did the teacher and her attorney refuse the polygraph? Only two reasons: she was lying or she was afraid the test was reliable. Also, the teacher was emotionally and defensive only when the boy brought her relationship with a teacher when she was a student. How old was she? She has been lying and deceiving as a child. She obviously does not respect the student teacher boundary.

Read the transcript again, which is on this site.  You will see that the student 's story makes more sense.  You will also see why he sounds like he is fumbling...because the teacher keeps trying to make him sound like he's lying...and she does a good job on the video, but after reading it, he sounds perfectly legit.  She put him on the ropes...and she made him start ducking and dodging, when in reality we should have been focused on her.  The student accuses her of having sex with him, and her response is about her car headlight?...that doesn't make sense.  Then she explains the coded notes...and if you look at what she says they mean compared to what the student says there is no doubt the students answers make more sense.  She is a professional manipulator, and a master of her craft...enjoy analyzing it...it's absolutely amazing people like this exist.

You Go Joelle!

I thought it was obvious that the students had lied even before I heard the polygraph results and had  all the facts. I think this was just an example of arrogant kids who got caught in a lie and thought they were smart enough to talk their way out of it.

One thing that surprised me was that Dr Phil came down so hard on Joelle for not getting more emotional.  Some people deal with situations that way.  Maybe Joelle is on anti-depressant meds, I mean, I sure would be if this had happened to me!  I think she stuck to minute facts of the case because she was grasping at anything that could conclusively prove  that she had been wrongly accused.  Otherwise it was more of less "He said/She said"

I must admit that I had one moment of doubt when the "notes" were mentioned but when I saw them I said YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!  Why not have a contest and see how many messages could be made up from those letters?  Give me a break

I hope Joelle gets a bundle from that school board.  She deserves it!  After hearing all the evidence I'm amazed that they could have come to the conclusion to dismiss her.  Talk about a bunch of idiots!

Interesting

OK, so you don't believe a polygraph but you believe some letter codes that a now 19 year old boy says what it meant.  If it were the actual words written you would have a point.  WOW!
But if you really did your home work on polygraph's you'd understand anyone can fail it telling the truth and a GOOD confident lier can pass it so its a toss up, if you listened he also said he passed one and failed one so this is his third one...its seems you don't have much of an open mind and common sense to read between the lines and listened to her lame responses, then ask yourself  if it was what she said it meant why would she have to put it in code UNLESS she had something to hide and at stake like her reputation, losing her job and going to jail, you think she's gonna cop to anything at this point ?

There is something that makes me not like or trust this lady. I'm not saying that Matt was telling 100% truth  but I do believe that something happened between them and that she just did not want to get caught! Someday the truth WILL come out and I guarantee that she will be the one who is apologizing!

No Consent

Quote From: jillmsouthwick

I think that the teacher is 100% innocent. Hello...both of those boys failed a polygraph test and fumbled over and over when telling their story! I think that these boys fantasized about their teacher and someone overheard what they were talking about and were confronted about it. Instead of looking like horny perverted 15 year old boys, they decided to put the blame on their teacher to save themselves. I think things just spiraled out of control from there. I doubt that any of the boys wanted to take it this far, but when things started escalating, they didn't want to go back on what they said. I think it was quite clear that this teacher is innocent. I feel bad for her because her life will never be the same. She will always have that stigma. Shame on these boys for ruining her life. I really hope that she will be able to be a teacher again.
Please. They were 15 year old children. Is a 15 year old girl who is said to be more mature horny, when she accuses a male teacher of rape? We are talking about rape. A child can not consent

11/02 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 2

Quote From: aimeebm258

I must say that even from watching the previews of this episode, that boy was a manipulative, snake of a liar.  You could tell by his mannerisms, his tripping over his sentences eye movement, etc that he was lying.  He's looking for a pat on the back from his peers, and in the process, ruining a womans life.  Early in the show, it showed one of the other accusers, and how he FAILED his polygraph.  And the boy today did TOO.  As far as the woman that posted the last comment....of course she's skeptical of the teacher....look what her husband did to her.   She's  bitter.   You could smell the rancid lies of that kid from a mile away.  I agree that maybe the teacher was a little to close/friendly with her students, but this was also 5 years ago.  She couldn't be more than 30 at this time, so she was a young 25 when all of that happened.  I think it's a fantasy, as Dr. Phil said- boys at school and in the locker room fantasizing, and talking bad things about her, and they created this little story for their egos.  The polygraph proves it all.

I know that polygraphs are somewhat inaccurate, but after this show, I wouldn't trust a polygraph at all.  This teacher is lying and the accusers are telling the truth.  Everyone is worried about protecting the teacher, but it is the students who are the victims here.

I think this teacher actually had Dr. Phil wondering if the student was lying.  I couldn't believe how everyone started ganging up on him...the teacher, the audience, Dr. Phil, the teachers husband, and the polygrapher!  Everyone was fooled into focusing on the student, which is exactly what the teacher wanted.

It is really sad that a victim can be abused like this by a teacher.  I can totally understand how one of the students decided to give up and move on with their life.  This teacher will stop at nothing.

Why is she trying to get a job at the same school?  Why doesn't her interpretation of the coded notes make sense?  Why does she avoid talking about the sex allegation when she has a chance to respond, but instead talks about things that have nothing to do with the sex allegation?  Why does she try to break the students concentration and credibility with half-truths and twisting words?  And why do so many people fall for it????

please help this teacher

I am an elementary special education teacher. I will be the first to admit that this teacher did do things that I find inappropriate, such as inviting kids to her house, driving them home, playing "never have I ever", and writing notes. However, people do have to remember that she comes from a very small town where I assume everyone knows each other, and it is probably more acceptable to do these things. This does not make it okay for these teenage boys to completely ruin her life. At 14 years old, they were too focused on themselves to realize how they can truly ruin a person's life based on ALL lies. now that they are adults, shame on them for not being "manly" enough to step up to the plate and admit their wrong doing. My heart goes out to this teacher, and i think the school district, the town, and these boys owe her a huge apology. The court did not find her guilty, and it is extremely obvious that these boys made the whole situation up based on their inconsistencies and their attitudes! Yet, how horrifying to think that she still lost her job and cannot even volunteer in her child's classroom.  Maybe the Dr. Phil show can set up a donation system where people can donate to her. I wish her luck and I hope she find justice in this situation soon. It seems so easy and natural to put the blame on teachers in this world; yet how easy it is to forget all the positive differences teacher's make. I can't believe this district fired her based solely on hearsay. They are sending a message to their students to make up stories about a teacher you do not like, and we will get rid of him or her... with no questions asked!
