(Original Air Date: 11/02/07) Dr. Phil continues his look at a teacher sex scandal that has a school and families divided in a small town in Texas. High school teacher Joelle Ogletree faces accusations of sexual misconduct with some of her male students. Joelle claims she's completely innocent but reluctantly agrees to face Matt, one of her accusers, in person. When Dr. Phil drills down into the details of the case, it's her word against his. Matt maintains that when Joelle was his high school French teacher, she came on to him. He says that as a student he received sexually explicit notes from her, but that the notes were written in code. See the encrypted messages and judge for yourself: Are they provocative or harmless? Then hear how Joelle and Matt interpret them. Plus, Matt agreed to take a polygraph test and have the results reviewed by an independent examiner. Find out what the test reveals and how Matt reacts when he hears them read aloud, as he sits face to face with Joelle. Hear both sides of this gripping sex scandal from the accuser and the accused, and judge for yourself if justice has been served. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Joelle is lying, however, so is this kid.

They're BOTH lying and the psychological standpoint of both parties involved prevents them from telling the whole truth and perhaps they might not even know the truth. I'm not exactly sure WHAT happend between the two of them, in fact, no one knows what happened, the only two in the world that know the truth are Ogletree and that kid but I think something DID happen. It was probably short and to the point... Joelle's past is rooted in what many would call a "controversial love story".

She was probably a shy girl in school, grew up in that area, fell in love with her teacher, and then married him. I'm willing to bet ANYTHING and EVERYTHIG that this kid DID NOT KNOW this until AFTER he had some type of sexual relationship with her or some type of intense interaction with her, maybe not sexual. Because he is similar to her, shy, grew up in the area, etc...etc... did ANYONE in here notice that he made a big deal out of Joelle marrying her teacher??? I can't be the only one in here that noticed this. (sorry, I haven't read the entire thread). He has an issue with someone that marries their teacher or someone that married someone older than they are. Its like he thinks its 'dirty' or posibly 'immoral' to marry your teacher. So he turns her in after they have some type of affair or he just makes it up.

If i'm not mistaken, this is the kid that had a strict religious upbrining, so moral beliefs are a part of his character. He didn't have any problems with the affair (or whatever happened) UNTIL he found out what she did. Then he felt like he MUST do something to stop an 'immoral' person. Very odd kid to say the least... I mean, to go through all that trouble just because you THINK its immoral to marry someone thats older than you are.  He probably even views her as like a "slut" of some sorts. In his MIND he can't quite understand why someone would do that, especially a woman. But more imporantly, he couldn't stand it that he touched a woman like that.

Trust her

Read the transcript again, which is on this site.  You will see that the student 's story makes more sense.  You will also see why he sounds like he is fumbling...because the teacher keeps trying to make him sound like he's lying...and she does a good job on the video, but after reading it, he sounds perfectly legit.  She put him on the ropes...and she made him start ducking and dodging, when in reality we should have been focused on her.  The student accuses her of having sex with him, and her response is about her car headlight?...that doesn't make sense.  Then she explains the coded notes...and if you look at what she says they mean compared to what the student says there is no doubt the students answers make more sense.  She is a professional manipulator, and a master of her craft...enjoy analyzing it...it's absolutely amazing people like this exist.

Doyou trust the female teacher who raped and kidnapped the 13 yr old child and went to Mexico????

The Moment When She Lost It

The teacher was not believeable, to me. As much as I wanted to believe her, she refused to take a lie detector test, she presented herself and her answers as a guilty person rather than one who has been falsely accused. I believe she started something with Matt and Matt, being a teenager with bursting hormones, told his friends and things got out of control. What an unfortunate waste of time!!!

The Teacher vs. the young man

This was the strangest program I believe you've ever had.  There is definitely something wrong with the Teacher's response.  Your observations and comments about her responses were right on.  I would like to see a followup somehow.  I believe the young man DID say he passed his first polygraph test years ago, did he not?  I also believed the other young man on the telephone.  The Teacher did not ring true.

Teachers Help

When I was in High School , back in the 50 s , a very attractive, caring, talented teacher was involved with one of her students. He felt he might be Homosexual and ,at that time, such a thing could actualy be dangerous in my small community.

In an effort to help him enjoy the company of women , she became intimate with him sexually.  He graduated but less than three years later he commited suicide , as he found himself gay (not a word at that time) and was unable to face it . While not much was discussed in matters pertaining to Sex in those times, many in the community secretly praised her for her efforts.

What if he had been befriended by a Male teacher , who may have been Gay , and led to accept his sexuality ?  Would that have been wrong  ? On another note , we had another Female teacher who slept with half the boys in my Senior class , but  (unfortunately)  was fired after her second year. She was barely several years older than her students . In those days you didn't mention the term Sex and if you attempted to buy condums at the local drug store , you were reported to your parents.  It would'nt surprise me if some of the parents in the town where that teacher taught , hadn't had some contact with a teacher in there day , but of course won't say so now .

Did some of you watch a different show?

Shame on you! As a retired teacher, you should know that GOOD TEACHERS don't send coded notes to students. They don't flirt. They don't have them over to their homes. They don't have them spend the night. And they don't lie...which she was OBVIOUSLY doing when she (poorly) explained the coded notes!

SOMETHING happened. This woman is lying. For Dr. Phil NOT to nail the boys after the failed tests says that even Dr. Phil is not so sure she's innocent! Remember, the boys PASSED the first lie detector tests. This woman has never had to take a test.

Good teachers ARE hard to find, but this one isn't one of them; in the least, she used poor judgement and was unprofessional. At worse, she had sex with young boys.

As a certified high school teacher with 9 years of experience, this woman would NEVER be allowed to teach my own children. She is dishonest. She is hiding SOMETHING. She WAS unprofessional.

fantasy land

I believe the boys are liers and are living in fantasy land, but I also believe that the teacher was wrong, totally imature, and playing a dangerous game with the notes.  She may have had an ego boost from the attention the boys were paying her.  I believe as a general rule you can sense it when another person has an interest in you.  She should have been more professional on that level.  In all fairness to the teacher I can understand her attitude on the show.  Dr Phil questioned her reactions and responses several times during the two shows.  She has had to live with this and the accusations for sometime now and has  had to repeatedly defend herself.  This is a serious topic and was one word against another.  She had to pick their stories apart to prove her innocense.  When a person listens to the boys stories they are taken back by the accusations and her pointing out discrepancies regarding other details such as headlights are what is proving the boys are lying.

Affect not wrong

I noted that you stated in both the shows that the teacher's lack of overt anger  seemed strange. Having worked with many abuse survivors, I have seen that affer repeating & retelling what happened, their story,  becomes almost rote. It can be flat, lacking affect, and even a monotone. The anger is there; the hurt is there.  Then there is also the fact that some people can only maintain their sense of self-control if they can be remote from the story--act as an outside observer. I think snap judgements--statements like you made--occur much too frequently, even from professionals.
