(Original Air Date: 11/02/07) Dr. Phil continues his look at a teacher sex scandal that has a school and families divided in a small town in Texas. High school teacher Joelle Ogletree faces accusations of sexual misconduct with some of her male students. Joelle claims she's completely innocent but reluctantly agrees to face Matt, one of her accusers, in person. When Dr. Phil drills down into the details of the case, it's her word against his. Matt maintains that when Joelle was his high school French teacher, she came on to him. He says that as a student he received sexually explicit notes from her, but that the notes were written in code. See the encrypted messages and judge for yourself: Are they provocative or harmless? Then hear how Joelle and Matt interpret them. Plus, Matt agreed to take a polygraph test and have the results reviewed by an independent examiner. Find out what the test reveals and how Matt reacts when he hears them read aloud, as he sits face to face with Joelle. Hear both sides of this gripping sex scandal from the accuser and the accused, and judge for yourself if justice has been served. Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

11/02 Teacher Sex Scandal, Pt. 2

Quote From: montpets

I think the teacher should also take a lie detector test.  She does not seem as innocent in all this as she portrays herself to be.  If she is telling the truth then she should not object to having a lie detector test.  If Matt took the test, she should too!

She did take a polygraph and passed it.

teacher sex scandal pt. 2

I don't believe this teacher is guilty. She did take a lie-detector test, and passed truthfully,  and stated very clearly  that her attorney advised her not to take another one on the show. He was in the audience and verified this. She sat on the show in a very dignified, composed manner and refused to be drawn into a shouting match with an obvious liar. The young man failed his lie-detector test as did other boys and Matt still would not admit his guilt in trying to ruin this teacher's career and life. In my opinion these boys, or perhaps one to start with,  made up a sexual fantasy about the teacher and it esculated out of control to the point where they would not turn back for fear of losing face in front of their friends. They apparently never considered the damage they were doing to this fine teacher and it appears they don't care. I think she should be totally cleared and the blame placed where it belongs........on the boys out of control imagination.

you need to read between the lines

Quote From: msdhoff

I am horrified by what this "small Texas town" has done to one of its residents.  Did anyone notice that the DA didn't prosecute?  That usually means there isn't enough evidence for them to get a conviction.  Isn't that supposed to equate with innocence.  That should mean this teacher gets her job back, gets back pay for the time she was not allowed to teach, and certainly has the right to volunteer in her child's classroom or school.  If I was in this position, I would have been fighting mad for a while, but gradually become almost anesthetized to the situation.  If anyone thinks the lady was not emotional, think how you would be if you had dealt with this every day for the last 5 years.  I would have memorized the transcript I would have read it so many times.  So, I am sure Dr. Phil would have thought I was a little too detached from the accusation also.  I don't think everything is known about this situation, but neither do I think the teacher is guilty.  I do think this all mushroomed and some lying little boys can't lose face now and must continue to perpetuate the lie.  The sad part.... their parents have bought into the lie in the effort to support their children.  Who loses?  The teacher, the students, the school and the community.  Stubborn tenacity keeps the teacher from moving to another town, but man, I would get out of Texas altogether!

she is guilty of something, with her students and their is more on this then you know.

she attack him on the small subjects, did not confront him on the big ones, for example car lights are little

things. why not ask him how did i get my hand donwn your pants, or was your pants taken down etc.

these are what you go after not the small things, you only do this when you are lying and trying to coverup.

she didn't have the right emotions for someone who is suppose to be a victim at a scandle of this.

If this was a man you would think different.

things to think about

Whether she did anything sexually with these children (i use the word children because that's what they were. They were not young men in my opinion.) isn't for me to judge. In this day in age i fully understand anything is possible, so unless she admits it, she won't be found guilty.  Does this mean i trust her?  The answer to that is NO!  The reason i say this is because she was consistently unprofessional.  It is her job to set boundries as a professional teacher.  What kind of boundries did she have?  She had no problem giving hormone driven students of the opposite sex a ride home.  She also had no problem calling those same students to help move a piano, disregarding the fact that pianos are extremely heavy and i should know because i am mover, into her home.  Nothing stopped her from writing notes to the same student and to make it worse they were in "code" whatever that means.  Finally,  when has anyone deemed it approapraite for male students to spend the night at a teacher's house who is of the opposite sex, or even the same sex? Dr. Phill didn't elaborate on that to much.  This teacher clearly does not know how to set and maintain boundries between teacher and student.  The lack of boundries forces me to look at her more like a student then a teacher.  So, did she do anything wrong? Yes, she created personal relationships with these students outside of school, which promoted poor decision making.  She put herself, her family, the students, and the parents of the students at risk by allowing these students to spend the night at her house WITHOUT PARENTAL CONSENT!   Again, why no one elaborated on that confuses me! She put herself in multiple one-on-one situations with these students making her liable for anything that could physically happen to them.(i use the word "physically" in a general way)   So,why? Why did these students have to be apart of these situations?  I mean, a 13 year old kid moving a piano! That's what made me mad! That is just not smart and i would never allow that!  I don't think that kid should be moving pianos now! So, with all that said, do i think she did anything with these students?  Again, i can't be the one to judge, but it would not surprise me AT ALL if she did.

And as far as her marrying and older former teacher goes.  The only thing that proves is that she is willing to step out of her generation and into others to get what she wants, which could be younger and we all know that is possible!

yes i agree

Quote From: mamy23

After watching this show it is obvious to me how so many teachers accused of sexual misconduct are allowed to continue to teach.  No one listens to the young victims!  Instead we ridicule them, tear them apart, question their honesty, etc.  Luckily this young man had the courage to come forward - let alone on national television.  Many do not - for fear of being treated as this young man was on the Dr. Phil show.  For this adult female, in a position of authority, to pass coded notes to male students & still be allowed to teach is unbelievable!  Once those notes were presented & she admitted to writing them,  she should have lost her teaching license.  Not to mention personal phone calls from the teacher's home to her male students to ask that they come & help move furniture!  Are you kidding me?!?!  Where are the parents of these boys?!?!?!  Then to top it all off the teacher in question is married to a man who was once her highschool teacher!!!!  As a parent this story is a nightmare!!!! It worries me that this behavior is tolerated nationwide & that young victims are not heard!!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she should not anymore any where, their is something wrong with her.

JUGEMENT WITHOUT FACTS

Quote From: will6012

There is supposed to be a boundary between student and teacher. It is the job of the teacher to enforce that boundary. She started her relationship with her husband when she was a child. The only emotions she showed was in defense of her own marriage to her teacher. She said "Does that make me a pedophile?" Yes, she has been defending that relationship. She needs to be questioned about that. What grade does her husband teach? SHE IS A LIAR. SHE CROSSED THE LINE. DID PEOPLE NOT LEARN FROM THE CATHOLIC PRIEST CHILD MOLESTATION CASES. SHE HAD SLEEPOVERS!!!

NEXT, THE TEACHER=KIDNAPPER WILL BE PREGNANT AND BE ALLOWED TO MARRY THE 13 YR. OLD CHILD RAPE VICTIM WHEN HE IS 18. RAPE IS ABOUT POWER AND TEACHERS HAVE POWER.

The real issue is that society looks at women as children. Dr. Phil would quickly say that children can't consent. Joelle was raped and now she rapes chilxdren. SLEEPOVERS? THERE IS A BOUNDARY AND IT CAN'T BE CROSSED.

oh, I am getting tired of people leaping before they look.  There was NO sleep overs.  She married at the age of consent, we do not know, nor is it our business how they first meet and it is amazing how we always blame the teacher or "adult".  And SHE is the victum here.

For those of you out there who complain that teachers are not "teaching" but then promply nail all of them to the cross for "calling at home", " having students over the home", being involved with them or in otherworse "caring".  Get a life.  Quit blaming, pointing and throwing all the burden of education onto the school system, when it frankly, is the parents responsbility.

I went over to my teachers homes, my father had his students over his hom.  My uncle took students on field trips.  My father paid students electric bills...so they would have a light and their parents could not...should he "not be involved"?!!!   I was yelled at and frankly quit teaching because of all this...and I CARED.

QUIT JUDGING!!!!!!!!  A child, especially a sexually active 15 year old boy can not lie!  No one has dared to question why he was sexually active at 14-15 years old BEFORE this lie.  Where were his parents?

THE WOMEN IS INNOCENT~!

Maybe her lawyer told her not to take the test.

Her lawyer did advise her not to take the polygraph test on the show.

THANK YOU FOR THAT

Quote From: kedmsd1

I grew up in this town.  It is a great community.  She comes from an outstanding family.  You can develop your own opinions from the limited time you viewed this show, but she has been through hell on earth.  Some of you have made comments about her and I am sorry that you feel that way.  I do not stand in judgment of her.  For the boys, I hope one day that they ask for forgiveness.
Thank you. You are obsoutely right.  WE only have a window.  You know her personally and what really goes on in small towns.  Thank-you for your insight.

Respond to your response

Quote From: dancan

It seems to me that Dr. Phil proved this teacher to be innocent, but he never said so.  He had a case a year or two ago where he stated his oppinion about a school administrator and finished with his endorsement of that man even stating he would be proud to send his children into this man's school.  Dr. Phil fell WAY short of such an endorsement in this case even giving some indication (carefully worded as always as he should be) of how frustrated this boy/man must be IF he was telling the truth.  Dr. Phil has used the lie detector several times to "prove" cases, but doesn't seem to be endorsing their reliability in this case.  I think that is because he didn't like the notes that were passed, the invitation this teacher made to students to come help her move, etc.   I am a great fan of Dr. Phil, but I think he "pussyfooted" (although carefully to appear not to) around his real opinion of this teacher.  I would have liked him to give his honest, straight forward, opinion of whether the school should accept her back as a teacher or at least a volunteer in her childs classroom.  I hate to say this about Dr. Phil, but I think he fell short of really helping this lady if he really thinks she is innocent.  My belief is that he felt she was innocent of the actual charges, but fell short of some level of ethics.  Dr. Phil, what is your advice to the School Board?

I do not think Dr. Phil pussyfooted around with his opinion of the teacher.  He did not have the evidence to make a judgement because of the polygraph tests that the boys took. I wish Joelle also would have consented to take the test. If there is nothing to hide, do it to clear yourself.

I don't believe these boys made ALL of this up. There were too many details about the incidents. BUT, those coded notes that she wrote to Matt made me really question her innocence.

Those notes are the most puzzling to me. I really have my doubts about who to believe. I feel Dr. Phil probably saw through body language and other factors that made her look somewhat guilty. That is the way I felt. I can't imagine why Matt would come on the show and face her if there was no truth to be told.

C'mon Dr. Phil and Everyone Else...

This teacher is soooo lying,C'mon people, what Teacher in America sends their students a coded note.I find that extremely and highly inappropriate. Not only that ,but her answer to the initials was so made up,,just look how easily and quickly she used Dr. Phil's own show as a reference to those initials, Who does that in the first place, or better yet who does that at all? Also all parties passed that lie detector in the beginning,Does'nt anyone find it at all suspicious that she was the only one who flat out refused to take it again, and not only that, but made excuses as to why and thwarted the question to the Attorney in the audience. I just have to say that her husband is a fool or should I dare say, he is questionable as well,I mean if he was her Teacher too...I don't know that speaks volumes to me.
