From a celebrity’s controversial meltdown caught on tape to nooses cropping up around the country, Dr. Phil and Bishop T.D. Jakes tackle tough racial issues. First up, Dog the Bounty Hunter spewed slurs in a phone conversation with his son, Tucker, and used the N-word repeatedly when referring to Tucker’s black girlfriend, Monique. Monique’s mother, Linda Shinnery, joins the Dr. Phil show via satellite and says she was appalled by Dog’s tirade. Should the reality TV star lose his job over a private conversation? Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, rapper Master P, and BET correspondent Jeff Johnson weigh in. Then, nooses, a symbol of hatred for African-Americans, are cropping up more and more across the country – from Jena, Louisiana to Columbia University in New York. Najee Ali, founder and co-director of Project Islamic Hope, shares his views on empowering the black community and combating stereotypes. Don’t miss this intense debate about racism and sensitivity in America, and find out how you can educate your children. Join the discussion.

Oh PLEASE!

Quote From: cstinitali

I think the "Dog" is around my age (48) and how dare he even think of that word let alone speak it.  When I grew up in around Cleveland, Oh., and all the racial termoil that was going on during then haven't we learned anything about that word?  That it is totally unexceptable these days.  I know I had four children and never once did they hear that word except in songs of the hip hop nature but then it was not used for the use of back in the day use.  I am ashamed that someone in the spotlight and also who lives on the Hawaiian Islands, where the white population is a minority, can even think like that.  For him to use it he has to use it frequently.
You may have grown up in Cleveland, but Dog grew up with an angry, racist father, moving on to further grow up with bikers, then jail. He has grown as a person to love God, mercy and humility but the biker/jail talk in him is still there. He deals with convicts/hard nosed criminals everyday so he is going to communicate on their level, so they will listen.

I listened to the entire tape, thanks to the National Enquirer. He explains himself quite well if you actually listen to what the content of his message is and not just get stuck on one word. This was a conversation between father and son, communicating in a language they (Tucker and the girlfriend) knew he would say.
Ask Tucker why he even taped this conversation? He knew what his dad was going to say. And he wanted to get his dad. This is entrapment.

Should Dog use that language? No. But in reality those words are said everyday in jail, by old bikers, old ex-cons, they may have changed in someways but not a 100%.
I saw Dog on Larry King and I felt they were persecuting him, as the "bad celebrity of the week". Made him cry and say he was sorry.....ok can we go back to "bad Paris and Brittany" now?
Come on. Move on already.
This was a PRIVATE conversation his son taped to ruin his dad cause his dad wouldn't do what he wanted him to do.....hire him. Well they say payback is a bitch but this went too far.

I grew up in Canada in a northern Ontario town. When I visited my sister in Texas 2 years ago, I couldn't believe the quiet racism that goes on everyday and neither could she.
When people ther asked if we had black friends back home our answer was no.
Why were we racist? No, because there wasn't any at school, or even in the town we grew up in.
Why is the town racist?.......no in fact they university now has a foreign student program with several Africian countries now., they just weren't here!
It was just when we grew up for what ever reasons, the black population never migrated this far north. Even in upper Michigan they are few and far between still today.
Does that make us all racist? Hell No!
Just never knew of any until I was much older and they moved in town and are great doctors, radiologists, technicans and professors.

Regardless the only exposure we have had has been mainly thru US TV shows. Yes I remember several shows when the blacks/Africian Americans called each other names that if a white person said it would be wrong. I know it confused me as a kid how come it was ok for them to say it and not us. Isn't a wrong just wrong? Or is it ok for some but not all?

Anyway, this was this week's hot celebrity screw up. It's over. He aplogized......I think his son and girlfriend are the ones who owe Dog the rest of the family an apology! And A&E quit being such candy butts and put the show back on! They should have supported their first big star and found out the entire story before pulling the plug.

Now to make a Federal case out of this private conversation turned into public persecution it way out of line for everyone.
Calm down. ......Take deep breaths.....say your a goof for saying that...... and letting your son set you up!
But there are alot bigger problems in the world right now than what a 50 year old biker/bounter hunter says!

Judge not lest ye be judged

I am a great admirer of Bishop Jakes and watch his broadcasts regularly but can he truly say that he has never in private conversation used the term Honky, Cracker, Klansman or the like?  And if the answer is no then what about "Bitch", "Slut" or "Ho/Whore"? Everyone (and I mean everyone) can recall a  private conversation that would shame us if broadcasted on national TV.  When will the American public get over themselves and their holding public figures to a higher standard than they themselves can meet?! Dog the Bounty Hunter is a former prisoner and a bail bondsman not the president of the United States.  Dr. Phil is appalled that his son sold the tape recording to the media.  Why? Dog is a man who has produced numerous children with numerous women and only just married Beth who co-stars on the show with him.  What example does that set for your children?!  I think Dog Chapman is a good man who stuck his foot in his mouth.  Don't we all have more important things to worry about?

A lot of evil is being exposed

Quote From: anniecat1209

Saying that "The Dog" didn't know any better than to use the "N" word is the height of ignorance!!  Of course he knows better and it is not because he lived in Denver, either!  I live near Denver and also lived in Houston, Texas, for a very long time!!  Comparatively speaking, Houston is FAR worse in terms of racial "inequality" than Denver is!!  Denver is a very cosmopolitan city and much more tolerant of racial differences than Houston or any place in Texas is, and I have lived virtually all over Texas!!  What really amazes me is that there is ANY issue at all about skin color!!  We are all born a color....but, who is responsible for how and what color he/she is born?!?  Making an issue of skin color is not only ignorant but shallow and silly at the same time!  Is it possible that the differences people talk about are more CULTURAL than about skin color?  As for Mr. Chapman, I am certain that he had NO idea that his son was taping their conversation...what parent suspects a child of taping a private conversation, anyway?  The point is that obviously, Tucker has a reason for selling that taped conversation, which brings up a whole set of issues between Tucker and his father.  Those problems will have to be settled at some point (or not) but, the point is that A&E had no choice but to pull Chapman's show because of the controversy involved.  This supposedly quelled a lot of negative backlash that was sure to happen had they left it on the air.  I think A&E intends to let the whole thing die down and hopefully, at a later date, put him back on the air....probably very late at night, as they have done with Victoria Gotti's show, albeit to satisfy contractual obligations as well and to stave off possible legal action by Chapman.  He probably will file suit anyway, if for no other reason than to protect his name.  The whole situation is sad and pathetic.  The ONLY problem I have with Mr. Chapman is that in the last show I watched (which was probably over a year ago), one of his puppies was attacked by two of his other dogs and severely injured.  Either he or his wife found the puppy in an outside garden, assumed it was dead, and tossed it over into another part of the garden!  The next morning, apparently, they realized the poor puppy was still alive and then, and only then, (I presume because the cameras were rolling), tossed the nearly-dead puppy into the back of his car, supposedly to take it to the vet.  Not another word was said about the puppy or whether or not it survived, but I was so incensed by the callousness of the poor puppy's treatment, I have not watched the show since.  This, on top of the recent events and remarks involving Tucker's "black" girlfriend, have only solidified my impression that Mr. Chapman has very little compassion for ALL living things except when the cameras are rolling.  Personally, I think a nice, long hiatus from Mr. Chapman and his self-aggrandizing behavior would be a very GOOD thing!
Shawnylou, your message was well said.  I agree with you 100% on "is anyone reading or forgetting history".  Racial slurs and remarks are spoken in lots of homes.  The sad part of that is the children are taught these things, they bring them to school, work, play and its a nasty disease that spreads.  Racism will always exist.  The Bounty Hunter may be off of television for a while, but I'm sure he will return and as for Cramer, I'm sure he'll show up when the flames die down and so will Imus.  These people are exposed, yet they seem to have no shame or they simply don't care.

agree with you completely

Quote From: karendj

I agree totally with you.  My daughter listens to rap (unfortunately she is of age so there is nothing I can do about it) and it totally disgusts me how she can stand to listen to the totally degrading things that are said about women.  As you said ... blind eye!

As far as rappers using racial slang....my understanding is that demographics show that a large number of purchasers are Caucasian.  So basically the rappers are continually planting this word in the heads of our young people, desensitizing their audience and then getting upset when the "N" word gets used.  It has never been acceptable in my home to use any type of racial slur.  This is the only one that crops up....other cultures do not get on the radio and sing out their slurs.  And, it seems, the rappers enjoy living off the money they obtain while educating the younger generation in such a vile way.

I feel tomorrow with be so totally one-sided on the show.  I believe many of us agree that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson use "racism" to further their own agenda.  I understand why Dog refused to be part of this panel.  He has been slammed enough.

Hopefully Bishop T.D. Jakes will be a voice of reason.  Too bad Dr. Phil couldn't have Bill Cosby on.

When Dr. Phil says we must have sensitivity I hope he stresses that sensitivity is a two-way street.

Dr. Phil is very brave to take this on.  Depending on the way it is handled he could lose a good portion of his viewing audience.  I have always been a huge fan of both Dr. Phil and Dog.  However, if Dr. Phil allows his panel to be totally racist toward Caucasians I will have to stop watching his show.

As far as Dog, I hope A&E puts him back on.  What happened to him was sad because it was his son that turned on him.  Unfortunately our media has done a wonderful job in giving a rag like "The Enquirer" unbelievable attention.  I would not waste my time of day on "The Enquirer" and believe that without the media attention very few people would care what came out of "The Enquirer."  Who are the advertisers that pulled out of A&E after this hit.  Maybe they should advertise in "The Enquirer" so I don't have to be aware of their existence.

We must see racism when it is really there.  Imus was a case of true racism and yet he is returning to his show.  Something is wrong with this picture.

Good luck Dr. Phil ... this Dog situation could end up biting you.

Karen

If the black community wants it stopped, start with themselves.

Give Sharpton or Jackson a chance to have a microphone and crowd behind them nodding their heads and they are in heaven.

I'll tell you now, they neither are no Dr. Martin Luther King and no one will ever be his equal. They can try all they want and will never touch him and his goodness. Now, that was a Godly man !

When I was 12, I wanted to go march with Dr. King in Selma Alabama at the misjustices that were being done. Being white has been my shame for years because of the things that have happened to blacks and American Indians . Alex Haley drove home our shame with "Roots" and I cried for years. That is until about 6 years ago.

I have witnessed so much racism because of the Sharptons and Jackson's that it has turned me against them. I have discussed this with my friends that have told me the reason my lack of tolerance is due to the fact these men make such issues of everything, people are tired of it. It's as if they want another civil war. Sharpton and Jackson are so full of hatred and bigotry they need to start with themselves before they try to clean out anyone else's closet.  Let people "sit" with what they learn and grow from it. Daily we have revelations of where we need to improve on  ourselves but someone craming it down your throat wont help.

My personal friends of color are sick of it as well. They discuss how embarrassing both of these men are and wish they would go away and let the world learn to live together.  We go to church together, eat together, pray together, work together and help each other.  We have openly discussed bi-racial marriages and are against it ONLY because of the pure hell the children have to live through.

No one is going to MAKE anyone accept something they are against and all of the yelling, marching, etc. isn't going to help.

Dr. King lived a short while and left a beautifu legacy for us to live by............judging someone for the content of their character, not the color of their skin. I practice this and live by it.

Dr. Phil

I was very surprised that you said on The Larry King Show about 'The Dog Bounty Hunter' that what goes on in a PRIVATE conversation should not be made public. And for him to have had a "NOT SO GOOD LIFE' and try and make it better and just because now he SLIPPED his past comes and HAUNTS HIM .Which by the way has nothing to do with his past. I think it is doing NO JUSTICE in showing our future kids who think it's too late.If there was recordings of any number of households(white,black,mexican etc...)we would all be surprised at what is said. And everyone of us would be RACIST (ok not everybody)and it would be with all culture's and race.BOTTOM LINE -What you say in your private conversation, does not reflect the person you are.You said it yourself HE is not racist,So should'nt we focus more on A SON BETRAYING HIS FATHER.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

If this man is going to lose his job because of something he said in the privacy of his home, during a private phone conversation with his SON, then what is next.  When will it stop.  I am NOT  saying prejudice is right, but to me the bigger picture is freedom.

When people start dictating what can be said in your own home, well I just find it very very frightning.

Always the white guy

I am so tired of hearing about yet another white celebrity who made a racist comment or racial slur! What about all the people in the black community who slam or bash whites??? I don't see you guys jumping all over them! Why is all the racist focus ONLY on what people of the white race say? Have you listened to ANY rap music Dr. Phil? Wake up to the fact that black rappers, black youths, and some in the black community use the "N" word a hell of alot more than white people do... I can hear it almost everyday blarring from someones car stereo while driving down the road! That word will never go away until EVERYONE stops using it...PERIOD. I am so sick of it always being some white guys fault for some stupid comment. There ARE two sides to the racism issue and it does NOT help solve racism to continually bash only one race for the comments they make or thier behavior when there are two, three, or four other races involved! Stop making this a white against black issue please! It is an all or nothing issue. Every time I hear a black person use that work it pisses me off. If that word is so dam offensive then it should be offensive NO MATTER WHO SAYS IT or the context in which they say it!!!! End of story. And as far the The Dog is concerned, he is a man who has overcome tremendous strife in his life and he has help MANY more people than he has hurt and what happened was a private conversation in which he was trying to communicate to his son in a way his son would understand the levity of what he was trying to communicate. Be fair, play the entire tape, hear the ENTIRE message, then have a discussion about how much the whole world should now hate him.

The Epidemic is Curable

Quote From: shawnylou

My two grandson's are both racially mixed.

fathers both black and my daughter Caucasian.

The Blacks I know of prefer not to be called African Americans as they find comfort in Black American.

I know many people from Africa and they find it hard to accept  "African Americans" but readily accept the term Black America.

With-in the last two years we have seen an out-burst of  "mouth" vocal issues of rude behaviors. ON all behaviors from everyone. Including Al Sharpton to Reverend Jackson.

1. Imus, he decided to make a joke out of the ladies on the basket ball team. He has been off the radio air waves for almost one year. He is now coming back to the air waves in another month to a different station.  Supposedly he has learned to be more sensitive.

2. "Kramer.. lol.. he had an outburst at a  heckler while performing on stage doing his routine as a comedian less than a year ago and went wild on the guy [ ballistic He is sorry and NO one has heard from him since. In the meanwhile everyone makes fun of Jews on and off the airwaves and Italians and Mexicans and Indians /Muslims and anyone else they can.

3. Jena 6 is the BIGGEST embarrassment in American history this side of the 2000 decade so far. Note: I said SO FAR*

4. A NOOSE?  and that town has /had no clue as to what a noose is or what that meant during the slave days and when they went looking for a slave that ran away? THEY HUNG THE SLAVE!

5. What lawyers were given to those kids and  what governor runs that town who could not educate that town in the right or wrong in that NOOSE hanging from a frig-gen tree?

6. Does not one person study history anymore?

7. Katrina is highly suspect in the abuse of the poor as well. Did color play a part or simply because people were poor and they did not matter as much as the rich?

Back to Mr. Chapman...he was so honest in a private conversation to his own son  who received 15,000.00 to  TELL on DADDY. Wrong or right? Too late now and the lips are loose and Mrs.. Chapman is devastated and the Chapman family are sorry and now the repent part is happening and everyone and their brother are here to JUDGE.

8. Cracker,, word for white person, cannot be used and not in a comedy anymore and cheap Jew and any mention about a Jew being tight with money cannot be mentioned in any comments on television anymore.

Jesse Jackson has made many fopahs regarding the Jewish people and so has Sharpton and many regarding the white folk.

9. There are other ways and better ways to handle things than the way those two handle the situations most of the time. And the 3rd associate of their ilk is the most ferocious of them all and the biggest bigot  Louis Farrakhan, that is a dangerous man.

10. My grandson was in a fight at school recently regarding his color. He defended himself. he was suspended for fighting. The kid who called him the racial slur is being taken out of the school district . The word  "Nig--r " is a hate crime word in our district here in Washington state.

11.  what is black? Look in a crayon box and not one color is pure white or black.. find the colors of what your tone is and I bet you, that we are that crayon box and basically this whole sad mess is just that .. A MESS!

12. This takes all of us to look at each other and be neighbors and friends and take good care of our children and not allow this to happen at all.

Should Mr. Chapman have a second chance ?

I believe he really did not know any better was raised that way. I know Denver, it is a place of  "hard" and now he is getting the education of his life. Do not use your mouth like that EVER ABOUT ANYONE*

None of us should and he should not have to ask Sharpton or Jackson for forgiveness, but instead the common Black people of America and the woman his son dates for forgiveness.

How do we keep this from happening at all? Start at home and never use that language at home , children really need to play with all sorts of children from all backgrounds and cultures and religions. Balnce is absolutely healthy for kids and parents need to get out and greet people and get out of their rut's too. Volunteer at school and get on school boards and know the people in your community and make sure that the kids get to play with all cultures .

No name calling, no bullying, no comparing of clothes and it would be nice if no one noticed the bald kid too.

Point, you begin at home and take one tongue at a time.

Patience is a good start.

The epidemic of bad language and hate has got to stop!  NOW that is BAD FORM*

he epidemic of bad language and hate has got to stop!  NOW that is BAD FORM*Yes I am upset.  After years of teaching my students about these issues.

I am apalled that we need to confront these issues head on again.  The girls from NJ did not deserve to be under Imus' shoes .. an ugly image that really tells it like it is.  What he deserves now that he has been corrected,,,,well the responsibility to let everyone know that he was wrong and the task of educating the public...because it will sensitize the community at lrge not because we forgive him...he also has a responsibility to minimize the impact on each girl as well as the team.  He is an old man and we better be sure he does so soon.  We need to show the public just like a classroom teacher that people learn from their mistakes.... I won't forgive him and I don't think many should but casting him out let/s us forget his responsibilities.  Let's raise the conversation so that all can hear...

The Jena 6....it is our fault as a society for leaving this stuff out there without more aggressively adressing it
more aggressively.  I don't think the public knows the whole story of Jena.  But I don't the kids knew that their behavior was so repugnant.... that is part of being adolescent just as using a car at high speed or drinking and driving.  We need to protect the kids by informing them...We need to find ways to vent the pain of the past without letting the kids handle the dynamite without our supervision jusst as we supervise their dances and their learning to driving.

I never knew about the small pox blankets that were used on the Native Americans until I was 30; I never knew that Halloween was an opportunity to harass Jews of Europe which began as a fear of the Black Plague.  We need to pull these things out in the open.  Learning about the trail of tears and Manifest Destiny needs to be adressed in a way that helps us accept our responsibility for man's inhumanity to man.  The story the CRUCIBLE is a good starting point. Let's educate ourselves.  The Native Americans are still  telling the story of man's inhumanity....what price will we have to pay for our inhumanity of today?  I am glad that we know about the many noose that have been fund but it is time to deep six the reports so that the copy cating can stop; we do it for teen suicides to prevent the copycat factor (it is a serious problem for teens because they are hungry for attention.  For that matter I think the same goes for the school gun incidents. need.

BTW I agree with your recommendations.  Keep up your advocacy for your grand children and mine; they need your perspective! I am looking forward to Dr. Phil's input!

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Although I hate the N word, I do not believe that Dog Chapman is racist. He is constantly giving second chances to people that society probably would say don't deserve any more chances.  He has apologized over and over and I do believe he is truly sorry.  A little personal message to Dog - there comes a time when  you have got to forgive yourself and go on - God forgives you and I believe your fans do. Those that don't will be convinced by the way you conduct your life from here on out.  I am going on 5 years clean and sober and Dog the Bounty Hunter inspires me to keep on keeping on. You do the same.
