From a celebrity’s controversial meltdown caught on tape to nooses cropping up around the country, Dr. Phil and Bishop T.D. Jakes tackle tough racial issues. First up, Dog the Bounty Hunter spewed slurs in a phone conversation with his son, Tucker, and used the N-word repeatedly when referring to Tucker’s black girlfriend, Monique. Monique’s mother, Linda Shinnery, joins the Dr. Phil show via satellite and says she was appalled by Dog’s tirade. Should the reality TV star lose his job over a private conversation? Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, rapper Master P, and BET correspondent Jeff Johnson weigh in. Then, nooses, a symbol of hatred for African-Americans, are cropping up more and more across the country – from Jena, Louisiana to Columbia University in New York. Najee Ali, founder and co-director of Project Islamic Hope, shares his views on empowering the black community and combating stereotypes. Don’t miss this intense debate about racism and sensitivity in America, and find out how you can educate your children. Join the discussion.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: volcano

What does the scripture state?  It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, it's what comes out.  Dog, you've defiled yourself.  And simply put, you ain't no Christian!

Judge not lest ye be judged.

Freedom of speaking/ right to privacy

I dont even know if i want to watch the show to tell ya the truth.  I hope its not going to be a slam the Dog show cause if A&E dont put Dog the bounty hunter back on I will never watch it again.  Dog is a human being and was in a dispute with his rebelous son.  Its his privacy no matter what he said its personal between him and his son.  Words are going to be said in this day and age.  It may not be right but we all try to be good people.  One mistake compared to all the people this man has helped comon hes got the right to let that one go I think and only God has the right to judge him not  Dr Phil nor Bishop TD Jakes so I hope these men dont loose my respect for them if they go about trashing a Good God fearing Man as they both are.  Get over it and why arent they going after those nasty Rap artist saying that word and more.  LET GOD DO HIS JOB AND JUDGE ITS NOT FOR US TO DO IT.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: chrissy_06

I think that  Dog should get his show back b/c he his a hero to many people and he is one of my heros and he always will be. He made a mistake and we all make misakes its part of who we are. And i as do many people think that he should get his show back. He has one of the best tv shows around.
I agree, I think his son got him all riled up and set him up for a fall... I'm planning on firing odf an e-mail to A&E (pretty sure mine won't be the only one) we all say things we don't neccesarily mean from time to time. Think it's time to move on.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: diannevre

When I was a teen back in the 60's and the racial riots were going on, I couldn't understand why there was so much hate in the world.  Many of my friends were black and they were great people, inside and out.  My innocent solution then I feel still holds water today.  I think we as a world should all marry a different race.  Within 2-3 generations, we will have one race of tan people, almond eyes that slant slightly upward, great muscle tone, smart, and most of all beautiful.  What in the world would we have to hate and discriminate against then if we are all the same?  I think it really doesn't matter.  Because man is man and he will find something to hate.  Like "I don't like your dress" or "Your car is not up to snuff".  It's sad, but I can't help feeling that we will never get it as human beings.  There will always be some hypocrital, elitist nut-job that just can't seem to keep his or her mouth shut!  Can't we all just get along?  I am sooooooo sick of it all.  I can't leave it at this without saying that the Jena situation is disgusting.  I feel like it is the 50's again with the nooses.  History repeating itself again....and again, I am soooooo sick of it all!
Well now, a race of tan people with almond eyes etc. would be a bit boring dontcha think? Sorry JMO I personally enjoy all the differences. I  just think it's time we ALL move on. It's just this sort of "outrage" that cotinues to fuel the fire.

how dare you

Quote From: karendj

I agree totally with you.  My daughter listens to rap (unfortunately she is of age so there is nothing I can do about it) and it totally disgusts me how she can stand to listen to the totally degrading things that are said about women.  As you said ... blind eye!

As far as rappers using racial slang....my understanding is that demographics show that a large number of purchasers are Caucasian.  So basically the rappers are continually planting this word in the heads of our young people, desensitizing their audience and then getting upset when the "N" word gets used.  It has never been acceptable in my home to use any type of racial slur.  This is the only one that crops up....other cultures do not get on the radio and sing out their slurs.  And, it seems, the rappers enjoy living off the money they obtain while educating the younger generation in such a vile way.

I feel tomorrow with be so totally one-sided on the show.  I believe many of us agree that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson use "racism" to further their own agenda.  I understand why Dog refused to be part of this panel.  He has been slammed enough.

Hopefully Bishop T.D. Jakes will be a voice of reason.  Too bad Dr. Phil couldn't have Bill Cosby on.

When Dr. Phil says we must have sensitivity I hope he stresses that sensitivity is a two-way street.

Dr. Phil is very brave to take this on.  Depending on the way it is handled he could lose a good portion of his viewing audience.  I have always been a huge fan of both Dr. Phil and Dog.  However, if Dr. Phil allows his panel to be totally racist toward Caucasians I will have to stop watching his show.

As far as Dog, I hope A&E puts him back on.  What happened to him was sad because it was his son that turned on him.  Unfortunately our media has done a wonderful job in giving a rag like "The Enquirer" unbelievable attention.  I would not waste my time of day on "The Enquirer" and believe that without the media attention very few people would care what came out of "The Enquirer."  Who are the advertisers that pulled out of A&E after this hit.  Maybe they should advertise in "The Enquirer" so I don't have to be aware of their existence.

We must see racism when it is really there.  Imus was a case of true racism and yet he is returning to his show.  Something is wrong with this picture.

Good luck Dr. Phil ... this Dog situation could end up biting you.

Karen

How can you compare rappers to Dog.  Number one rappers are not the only people who call women bitches and hoes there are many other ethnic groups that disrespect women as well.  Now here you go turning this into racial tension.  Y ou have never heard any Black famous person talk about a person of a different race in a negative manner now have you.  If it were to happen you would be trying to send this person to death row.  I watched his show since it been on.  My husband and I remained loyal viewers we are good enough to pay his bills but not to date his kids something is clearly wrong with this picture.   And dont forget that Dog had his second chance.  He was released about seven years ago for murder.  Many of the rappers cant rap about something that they have not done but he can.  Learn to love and live your life you. maybe one day you might run across a Black person that is not all that bad.  I dont know you but if I ever see you I wish we could embrace each as one.  God loves all shouldnt we.

Heck Yeah!!!

When Americans don't address bigotry and the like, then this is what happens. What about people like Dr. PHil. If he got caught saying things like this, he would be in deep kempshi and his career would be over and/or damaged for the rest of  his life.

This guy Dog, deserves to lose his show. Not only was he using the word, but he was insensitive enough to use the word in relation to his sons girlfriend. So, if he will use it against his own flesh and blood,(in the sense he did not care about his sons feelings) think about the people who aren't in his family.  This guy is really a nasty piece of work. To even say that people don't have souls is outrageous and is a sign of deep, deep, hate and bigotry and the like. When you say that kind of stuff you dehumanize that group and make it easier to get rid of them. Don't forget this is what was done to Jews in Nazi Germany and millions of them were murdered!!!!  Yes, it is that serious because it starts this way, a little bit at a time.

And to hear this guy say he thought he was close enough to the African American community to reference anyone like he did on the phone with his son is hog wash!!!  This guy knew better and the proof IS in his conversation with his son!!!! He knew he would lose it all by saying those words!!!!  His tears on the show were for him getting caught and being so STupidddd!!!  That reverse psychology crap doesn't fly with a thinking human being!!!!!

Also, this is his son, who has probably heard these derogatory remarks all his life and wanted to expose his father for the "real" person he is. To do it nationally was maybe harsh, but who knows the "hell" he has put his son through. This kind of exposure is necessary in my opinion to avoid a dangerous under current of deep seeded hate that still exists in America.

This guy and people like him are examples of why nooses are being hung up in America and why a black man, in the late 20th century was dragged to death behind a truck until he was literally all over the place. (North Texas) YES, he should lose what he has worked so hard for! If he had really wanted to protect his lifestyle and career, he would not have used such words in the first place in any situation.

This society is too soft on racism. In my opinion, America is a place where part of the assimilation process of immigrants is racism American style.  They (immigrants) come with the media's version of minorites and then they get to practice it when they arrive.  Our society is conducive to it. Just pick up the paper and read about it!!

But Seriously, what makes this guy Dog any different from IMUS!!!

Business is Businss

A & E has the ability to terminate "Dog the Bounty Hunter" if they so choose to do so, however, it will be like saying to us "Don't mess up or we'll cancel you".  I believe even the Dr. Phil show has more controversial issues than Dog the Bounty Hunter.  I don't look for CBS to cancel Dr. Phil anytime before the Millenium.

What is said in private, should stay private.  We have a disgruntled young man full of vengeance and a bounty hunter faced with losing his livelihood.  Does that make any sense to y'all?  What Dog Chapman does in the privacy of his own home is no one's business.  And, because he is a parent, he does have the right to express his personal opinion about the women his son dates.  You can be sure as I'm siting here that if my son brought someone home whom I felt was of questionable character or behavior, I would express my opinion . . . .just not on the phone.  Just because someone is 18 does not give them a license to not be your child anymore.  Parenting doesn't stop because your son or daughter turns 18.

My son is 22, he lives at home; attends technical school, has a part-time job and we attend church together as a family twice a week; if not more.  I don't ever have to worry about where he is; because he is either at school, at work, or at home, or at a church function.   Good old-fashioned family values do work

if YOU WORK at them and allow them in to your life.

Dog might be a Christian, but being a Christian means you have to be a Christian 7 days a week, not just when it's convenient.  He has a very long way to go toward salvation and I think this latest escapade conjured up by a spoiled rotten brat will only serve to make Brother Chapman a stronger person.  People are entitled to their opinions about all different ideas, people, work, etc., it's what makes us who we are.

However, I do remember Calvin Coolidge's quote "I have never been hurt by anything I did not say".

(BTW, he was one of our U. S. Presidents)

PRIVATE conversations ?

Quote From: aabreed

I am a great admirer of Bishop Jakes and watch his broadcasts regularly but can he truly say that he has never in private conversation used the term Honky, Cracker, Klansman or the like?  And if the answer is no then what about "Bitch", "Slut" or "Ho/Whore"? Everyone (and I mean everyone) can recall a  private conversation that would shame us if broadcasted on national TV.  When will the American public get over themselves and their holding public figures to a higher standard than they themselves can meet?! Dog the Bounty Hunter is a former prisoner and a bail bondsman not the president of the United States.  Dr. Phil is appalled that his son sold the tape recording to the media.  Why? Dog is a man who has produced numerous children with numerous women and only just married Beth who co-stars on the show with him.  What example does that set for your children?!  I think Dog Chapman is a good man who stuck his foot in his mouth.  Don't we all have more important things to worry about?
So you are here to tell us that you know what a person says in private conversations?

not enough coffee - I read your post backwards - SORRY !

I so agree that no one knows what people say in private.  I also know that when I lived and grew up in Illinois I heard WAY too often people of the same race tossing around terms and then turing around and jumping on a person of another race for saying the same things.  I am not going to even watch this show today if Sharpton and those types of radicals are on.  If blacks want to go around saying in friendship to each other the N word then dont get all over any of us for saying it.  I dont and never have said that word for a racial comment, that word to me means lowlife sleazy (whatver) people - and that can apply to any race
