From a celebrity’s controversial meltdown caught on tape to nooses cropping up around the country, Dr. Phil and Bishop T.D. Jakes tackle tough racial issues. First up, Dog the Bounty Hunter spewed slurs in a phone conversation with his son, Tucker, and used the N-word repeatedly when referring to Tucker’s black girlfriend, Monique. Monique’s mother, Linda Shinnery, joins the Dr. Phil show via satellite and says she was appalled by Dog’s tirade. Should the reality TV star lose his job over a private conversation? Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, rapper Master P, and BET correspondent Jeff Johnson weigh in. Then, nooses, a symbol of hatred for African-Americans, are cropping up more and more across the country – from Jena, Louisiana to Columbia University in New York. Najee Ali, founder and co-director of Project Islamic Hope, shares his views on empowering the black community and combating stereotypes. Don’t miss this intense debate about racism and sensitivity in America, and find out how you can educate your children. Join the discussion.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: flthomcat

Like EVERYONE, Dr. Phil is talking about the NORM. Just because you are an exception doesn't make him wrong.

He goes by the FACTS...the statistics concerning teens having babies young and out of wedlock. The FACTS are that most will drop out of school, never go to college, never get out of poverty and their children will be in the very same sinking ship.

Congrats for being an EXCEPTION. Be thankful to your mom and to us tax-payers for helping you to live (your child DOES get assistance), go to school, raise your child, etc.

Sadly, more young girls and their children are not so fortunate. You shouldn't be disappointed in Dr. Phil for speaking HONESTLY about the usual problems that come with having babies young and out of wedlock. A

nd what you leave out is the part about the father lacking in your child's life. Trust me, that WILL impact your child and his/her status in life.

I thing many of us are exceptions, like myself.  Us tax-payers for helping us live?  Do your children go to school?  If so then I too support yours as well.  I am the "us a tax-payer" who pay for my children to go to school from my property taxes.  You never know, I probably pay more taxes than you, I probably earn more money than you so to assume you contributed more to my children from my teenage pregnancy is quite presumptuous!

As far as the father not being in the life, why again do assume that's the case for everyone?  Also, is there not a 50% divorce rate amongst adults?  So adults parents deal with the potential lack of father right?  What about the so called perfect family, where the married adults had children, then stayed married but in a disfunctional unhappy family, that will impact a child even worse!

We all understand that many teenage mothers are failures, but so are many adult mothers.  Also, why would we want to take a teenage mother and tell her, teach her, she can NEVER amount to anything rather than attempt to build her up to be successful?  THEN...why don't we do more to prevent pregnancies, bc pills, get the male bc pill approved, whatever it takes?  There always has been, always will be, teenagers that do have sex despite the best efforts of the parents.  There always has been and always will be teenagers that unfortunately end up pregnant.

Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: shawnylou

My two grandson's are both racially mixed.

fathers both black and my daughter Caucasian.

The Blacks I know of prefer not to be called African Americans as they find comfort in Black American.

I know many people from Africa and they find it hard to accept  "African Americans" but readily accept the term Black America.

With-in the last two years we have seen an out-burst of  "mouth" vocal issues of rude behaviors. ON all behaviors from everyone. Including Al Sharpton to Reverend Jackson.

1. Imus, he decided to make a joke out of the ladies on the basket ball team. He has been off the radio air waves for almost one year. He is now coming back to the air waves in another month to a different station.  Supposedly he has learned to be more sensitive.

2. "Kramer.. lol.. he had an outburst at a  heckler while performing on stage doing his routine as a comedian less than a year ago and went wild on the guy [ ballistic He is sorry and NO one has heard from him since. In the meanwhile everyone makes fun of Jews on and off the airwaves and Italians and Mexicans and Indians /Muslims and anyone else they can.

3. Jena 6 is the BIGGEST embarrassment in American history this side of the 2000 decade so far. Note: I said SO FAR*

4. A NOOSE?  and that town has /had no clue as to what a noose is or what that meant during the slave days and when they went looking for a slave that ran away? THEY HUNG THE SLAVE!

5. What lawyers were given to those kids and  what governor runs that town who could not educate that town in the right or wrong in that NOOSE hanging from a frig-gen tree?

6. Does not one person study history anymore?

7. Katrina is highly suspect in the abuse of the poor as well. Did color play a part or simply because people were poor and they did not matter as much as the rich?

Back to Mr. Chapman...he was so honest in a private conversation to his own son  who received 15,000.00 to  TELL on DADDY. Wrong or right? Too late now and the lips are loose and Mrs.. Chapman is devastated and the Chapman family are sorry and now the repent part is happening and everyone and their brother are here to JUDGE.

8. Cracker,, word for white person, cannot be used and not in a comedy anymore and cheap Jew and any mention about a Jew being tight with money cannot be mentioned in any comments on television anymore.

Jesse Jackson has made many fopahs regarding the Jewish people and so has Sharpton and many regarding the white folk.

9. There are other ways and better ways to handle things than the way those two handle the situations most of the time. And the 3rd associate of their ilk is the most ferocious of them all and the biggest bigot  Louis Farrakhan, that is a dangerous man.

10. My grandson was in a fight at school recently regarding his color. He defended himself. he was suspended for fighting. The kid who called him the racial slur is being taken out of the school district . The word  "Nig--r " is a hate crime word in our district here in Washington state.

11.  what is black? Look in a crayon box and not one color is pure white or black.. find the colors of what your tone is and I bet you, that we are that crayon box and basically this whole sad mess is just that .. A MESS!

12. This takes all of us to look at each other and be neighbors and friends and take good care of our children and not allow this to happen at all.

Should Mr. Chapman have a second chance ?

I believe he really did not know any better was raised that way. I know Denver, it is a place of  "hard" and now he is getting the education of his life. Do not use your mouth like that EVER ABOUT ANYONE*

None of us should and he should not have to ask Sharpton or Jackson for forgiveness, but instead the common Black people of America and the woman his son dates for forgiveness.

How do we keep this from happening at all? Start at home and never use that language at home , children really need to play with all sorts of children from all backgrounds and cultures and religions. Balnce is absolutely healthy for kids and parents need to get out and greet people and get out of their rut's too. Volunteer at school and get on school boards and know the people in your community and make sure that the kids get to play with all cultures .

No name calling, no bullying, no comparing of clothes and it would be nice if no one noticed the bald kid too.

Point, you begin at home and take one tongue at a time.

Patience is a good start.

The epidemic of bad language and hate has got to stop!  NOW that is BAD FORM*

I agree.  Parents aren't parenting any more.  They're too worried about being their friends.  Ya want friends - then GET SOME.  But don't have kids to be your friends.   I am shocked at the way children speak to their parents these days - and NOTHING is said or done to the children.  Parents don't get respect because they don't take the time to RAISE their children VALUES, MORALS and basic manners.

It's amazing to me because when I grew up, I heard the typical, yet occasional cursing.  Not racial slurs and name calling!  Cursing is an everyday occurence in homes today.  Now the children are calling parents names!  I would NEVER have done that to my mother & father and ABSOLUTELY would not accept that lack of disrepect from my own children.

Haters of America are Laughing Again

I do not believe white Americans are putting the nooses up. I believe Islamic extremists are attacking America from every possible vantage point, including trying to make an appearance of resurgent racism in America. Don't fall for this garbage. We cannot undo the wrongs of the past but we have come a long way toward improving and I believe racial issues in America are on a brighter path for the future.

Let's catch the criminals that are putting nooses up and find out who is behind this garbage!

A house divided against itself cannot stand - let's show haters of America that there is more to us than they have imagined, that they will have to do more than hang a noose or two.. to get us at each other's throats. Don't fall for this crap. Stand together America, black and white... united we stand, divided we fall.

Privacy invaded

This is so ridiculous.  I watch Dr. Phil every day and I like him.  The fact that this has become a show topic is really disappointing.  If America is that naive that they don't think racism exists, they really are in denial.  Are people really that "shocked"?  Dog has been in prison and even if he is a born-again Christian, the prison culture is totally based on race. There is no race mixing.  The man is trying to live a different life now and I'm sure he knows it's wrong but it's what he's been living.  It's pretty obvious he isn't the most sophisticated of people and so maybe he just needs to be educated.  I don't blame him for not coming on the show.  He'd just be asked the same questions over and over again and told how horrible he is and what he said was horrible and no matter what he says or how many times he apologizes he will not be accepted or forgiven.  People like to watch the mighty fall, and this would just be another spectacle for the masses to enjoy.

This "rant" that was recorded without Dog's knowledge and sold for profit is an invasion of privacy and a betrayal by a family member.  This was not Dog on A&E running around with a white hood on his head and spouting racist ideology. It is not becoming of someone who is supposed to be a Christian and a role model to many, but should we condemn him as a racist?  I don't know...what should be done?

Some African Americans call each other the "N" word and say it's okay because they are talking to each other and that it's a cultural thing.  I disagree.  That's like saying that  just because I am Japanese I go around calling my relatives Japs and Chinks...No, it just isn't going to happen.  Rappers and other people in the public eye that think it's okay to use the "N: word in lyrics and casual conversation  had better think hard about what they are promoting when they do that.  Until they stop using that word and other words that are demeaning to their race or to women. how do they expect others to do the same?

Fat Cats

I am amazed that people cannot see what the reverend Al Sharpton and T. D. Jakes are truely about. For one we as monorities do not need to have role models that dress in wardrobes that come from the hard earned money of their parishioners. Why can they not live the life of a humble servant of God doing his work. Black males especially in this day and age do not need to see leaders with expensive cars, jewelery, clothing, etc. What they need to see is how to be productive citizens without the use of violence. They need strong role models that are in a position to show them how to obtain their goals while making a difference that is positive with out all of the flash.

Birth Control

I am so tired of the religious right complaining about this. abstinence only education is proven to increase un-protected sex, whereas frank and honest sex education decreases sexual activity, unprotected sex, and pregnancy. did any of you actually read your bibles? when god said don't touch! eve ate the apple. the same is true with everything you tell kids, if you tell them "no" without a reason that they can accept then many of them will decide to do it just because its "forbidden" or "grown-up" if you tell them honestly what happens then they can make the right decision. To me the first method of prevention should be teaching by everyone in the childs life, then all types of birth control, after that are the two things you really don't want to happen: abortion, or pregnancy.

The Race Card

The majority of the black youth are the ones that have kept this issue alive! And look at Al Sharpton! You cannot turn on TV or look at a newspaper or look around you and there is nothing positive from them. The Black adults have given up on their kids. I feel that if the parents cannot handle them then why should society There are some people that do care, and I am sorry that they need to be included in the word "Race"  but I am disgusted with the way  they whine about being mistreated yet they portray themselves as criminals, haters of their own race! The buck starts at home!!! The Black adults as a whole do not show  the want for change! They complain yet they will not stop there own from criminal activity !

I would not want my children to associate with gangsters no matter what color they are and i would do anything to stop them! That is the difference in society!  The parents neet to stand up and be counted!

Quote From: toomanycats

What don't people understand about the fact that Dog the Bounty Hunter was having a PRIVATE CONVERSATION WITH HIS OWN SON.  IT IS NO ONE'S BUSINESS WHAT WAS SAID IN THAT CONVERSATION!  Mr.  Chapman does NOT owe anyone either an explanation or an apology.  He is not required to defend his choice of words that he had in a PRIVATE CONVERSATION.  He does not need to go on television and kiss everyone's ass to prove anything.   LEAVE THE MAN ALONE.  Everyone may not like black people!  So what?!  Freedom of Speech means that we get to say whatever the hell we freakin feel like saying, and whoever is offended by it is welcome to go whine to their psychiatrist about it.

Personally, I am not a racist, but I certainly defend the rights of those who are because it's none of my damn business how other people feel about other people.  Americans need to quit whining like first graders (no offense to first graders) about the names they are being called.  If I want to be beheaded for offending someone, I'll move to Iran.  Until then, I'll exercise my RIGHT to FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

Screw anyone who tries to rob me of that.  Duane "Dog" Chapman does NOT DESERVE to lose his tv show because of what he said in a private conversation.   I don't hate a certain race; I hate stupidity, not matter what color it is.

this was my favorite message on the board today and i think it had to do with how much these guys whining about this whole thing REALLY do sound like my group of first graders... its a great comparison... ask them if they would like cheese to go along with their whine?

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: flthomcat

The pills are given to CHILDREN without the parent's consent. I don't know about you, but NOBODY should be giving my children anything that relates to their health without my consent!

.

Just because some children are having sex doesn't mean we toss up our hands and say, "Have at it!" These are kids we need to counsel, see what's WRONG in their lives and try to help....not condone their DANGEROUS behavior.

Children are children...they are not adults and they should NOT be treated as such. They are not physically OR emotionally ready for sex. Often they are preyed upon by older guys. Tell me, how many young girls LOVE sex? Sorry, but 99% of them are used by boys and a few are using boys. This is not about LOVE. This is about playing Russian Roulette with their health.

How sad that we have given up on trying to stop child sex! How pathetic we are as supposed caring adults. Talk about governement trying to raise our children....last I checked, government could not do much of ANYTHING right. The last thing it should be doing is taking the place of parents!

I am a SCHOOL TEACHER and I am disgusted that educators have given up on our CHILDREN.

And everyone should also know that MAINE has problems...it has one of the highest rates for childhood sex, one of the highest rates for babies born out of wedlock, one of the highest welfare rates for women/children and the highest rate of unmarried people w/ children living together. Maine is on the WRONG track; we shouldn't be listening to anything its "leaders" have to say about children!!!

PROTECT girls and boys by not making it acceptable to have sex! Work with them to not have sex (just as we do with MADD and other groups concerning drinking). You don't protect children by handing them pills and condoms!!! You simply are saying you've given up!!!

Your thoughts are on the right track but what about when they DO have sex?  I agree with all your thoughts on what to do to slow it down but what about those that DO have sex?  There always has been teenagers having sex, long before the bc pill.  They just got shipped off to give it up, or to abortion clinics by their parents who insisted they not have sex and they did it anyway.  What do you suggest we do to prevent the persons who DO and WILL engage in sex from getting pregnant?

Racism

The last time I checked, we lived in a country of free speech.  You do not have to like anyone.  I am also of the firm belief that people have a tendancy to think that as long as they are not caught, they don't have to face criticism.  If we are going to punish someone for what they say in their homes, everyone should be held to the same standard.  Everyone should be subject to having their private conversations recorded for public consumption.  I guarantee that there is not a person on this planet who doesn't have conversations they don't want the public to be privy too.  I am including Dr. Phil himself.  Just because you don't get caught doesn't mean you are not guilty.  I have always said that the only difference between you and someone behind bars is location.  There is a plethora of self- righteous, egotistical, pompous individuals with specific agendas to shut up certain groups' freedoms and exalt other groups' freedoms for their own personal benefit.  Bottom line is, he with the most power and money wins.
