From a celebrity’s controversial meltdown caught on tape to nooses cropping up around the country, Dr. Phil and Bishop T.D. Jakes tackle tough racial issues. First up, Dog the Bounty Hunter spewed slurs in a phone conversation with his son, Tucker, and used the N-word repeatedly when referring to Tucker’s black girlfriend, Monique. Monique’s mother, Linda Shinnery, joins the Dr. Phil show via satellite and says she was appalled by Dog’s tirade. Should the reality TV star lose his job over a private conversation? Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, rapper Master P, and BET correspondent Jeff Johnson weigh in. Then, nooses, a symbol of hatred for African-Americans, are cropping up more and more across the country – from Jena, Louisiana to Columbia University in New York. Najee Ali, founder and co-director of Project Islamic Hope, shares his views on empowering the black community and combating stereotypes. Don’t miss this intense debate about racism and sensitivity in America, and find out how you can educate your children. Join the discussion.

I Commend Dr. Phil and The Bishop

November 11, 2007, 9:53 pm

I Commend Dr. Phil and Bishop

The "N-word" is totally unacceptable. Based on American history, it is one of the most derogatory words used to “insult” African Americans”, as well as, anyone else. Please understand that when I refer to the N-word being unacceptable, it also includes use by African Americans as well. It is of no surprise that Racism and Sexism still exist, and is on the increase in the new millennium. As our troops are deployed, and the possibility of the “draft” reaffirming, all of America’s brave soldiers are all bleeding “red”, regardless of race. Everyone is human! There is no particular race that justifies being of the human race.

It is a horrific thought to know that Dr. Martin Luther King’s death may have all been in vain. What kind of monsters have people evolved into? Where is the transition in life? Although there are civil rights, the many rights of minorities continue to be jeopardized. This has to change, but in order to change, awareness is required.  Dr. Phil and Bishop created awareness on last week’s show.  This is the reason that I fully applaud their endeavors to open up a public discussion.

I respect everyone’s right to his or her opinion, but I could not help but face the harsh realities that a few of the individuals whom commented could be racist as well.  These are perfect examples why America’s media network needs to share in a solution to discouraging racism and sexism in America. What better audience to reach than the numerous viewers across America.   As our children face a horrible war, gangs in schools, deteriorating educational value, economic disparity, aids and much more, why do we spend time hating, when we all should be supporting each other? These problems do not belong to an individual race. However, the fact remains racism and sexism is real in America.

Dr. Phil and Bishop, please continue to influence America. The dirt has to be swept from under the rug, and it all starts with communication. This will only breed education to the ignorance of racism and sexism. Everyone is created equal, but this is not factorial in America. The best lessons learned are to walk at least one day in each others shoes.

God Bless,

Nina

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: kchuffy

Dog needed to mind his own business, as a result he paid for his ignorance.
Our Children are our Business. Even when they have grown. This was a private conversation and should have stayed that way. I don't agree with what Dog said however he's entitled to his opinion. Even if it's wrong to most. His son was just out to get Dad. I listened to many different out looks on this story. It's sad that the times have come to this.

Living in a trailor??

I was very shocked ,while watching Friday's show, when I heard Dr.Phil something that didn't sit well with me. Here he is talking about racism and what comes out of his mouth?? He makes a comment about teen girls "getting pregnant 2 years from now, being on welfare, a child strapped to each leg, no future what so ever, and living in a trailor somewhere!" Does this mean that every person who lives in a trailor is lumped into this category. Why a trailor? Why not a no-tell motel? Or an apt.? I have known people that live in trailors and they are wonderful people. This sounds like Dr.Phil thinks that living in a trailor is a bad thing!!!!!!!!! Sounds like that phrase " TRAILOR TRASH." That is a type of racism as far as I'm concerned!

public schools and birth controls

Many parents of this generation have abdicated their parental responsibility to the government run 'public schools'. in that vein, the 'public schools' have taken the role of parents: teaching right and wrong, teaching  about sex, on top of teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.  The decision to fight teen sex by handing out  the pill to young girls without parental observation or presence at the time is just one  of the many problems that exist in 'public schools'. This is just another example of government interence in our personal lives.
It may be the attitude of the school board that they have to take action to reduce the rate of teen pregnacy because they realize that the parents won't take action. Too many parents are either too busy to be bothered by their children or find them bothersome nuisances.
Parents should be outraged at the audacity of the school board to take this measure, but they also should be more involved in their child's life than they are. It's time for parents across this nation to get a wake up call to be parents--to raise their children to be productive citizens of this country, with the 'public schools' assisting in their formal education.

Reinstate Dog to his show on A&E

This is my second time trying to post on this message board.  I believe my first comments were not acceptable to the staff so I will conform to your position and refrain from commenting on the guest on the show.

I am  black female and I, as a single parent, feel the pain of what Dog suffered at the hand of his son.  I believe Dog has apologized sufficiently and should not be taken through any more.  People in our society are so set on being right that they forget they have not lived perfect lives.  They also have not always said the most perfect things.  It's just that their conversations are said in private and they are not made public because they are not in the public eye.

To much is being made of this and I am worried that Dog will sink into a depression over the devastation of betrayal and public scrutiny.  WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE.  I don't blame him for not coming on the show.  He has already appeared on television and made an apology.

There are more pressing issues in our Country than what Dog said in a private conversation.

I think his son needs to apologize for selling his father out.  This whole thing is getting way out-of-control and people are now making comments against each other.  It's like Pandora's box was opened, once again and here we go again with the "N" word.  Personally, I'm sick of it.  There is a double standard out there and we all know it.

Most of the black people writing in are not going to admit they use the "N" word or ever have used it an I don't believe it.  I'm black and I know what goes on in the black community.

I hope Dog's wife reads through these messages to see how much support she and her husband have.  Please don't be mad with your husband, he's real and has tried to provide for his family the best he knew how.

My family is sending prayers to your family and we don't care who said what, and we are black.  We feel your son is wrong for setting his father up and one day he will realize that in the end, FAMILY IS REALLY ALL YOU HAVE, whether you use the "N" word or not.

GIVE DOG A BREAK AND MOVE ON TO SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT, LIKE WHY ARE WE STILL IN A WAR IN A COUNTRY IN THE MIDST OF CIVIL WAR?

53 years now means 6 in 1960

Quote From: emerydean

Come on.......I am 53 years old...I was born and raised in Auburn, AL and blacks call each other the "N" word ALL THE TIME.....so...if they want everybody else to stop....WHY DON'T THEY??????????????????????????????????? HE ISN'T THE FIRST AND WON'T BE THE LAST...LET IT GO...the man says he's sorry and he's does more good than bad.

This is you problem, you grew up with the n.... word. Everyone does not use that word, but I bet you do and you did not use it because you heard blacks. The people you heard were probably clan members. What is your excuse for the Federal Mashalls forcing your schools to let Blacks past and Vote rights. You're not sorry ad neither is he. How many Blacks live in your old Auburn, Al neighborhood.

I bet you call your wife bitch, but you probably would even fight  a white man if he called her a bitch.

Were you one of those people who thought OJ Simpson should get sentencd to death, not for murder, but for marrying a white woman.

The N word is a word Southern whites used, projecting their own inferiority complex. and inadequacies. In reality Southern whites felt inferior to their Northern counterparts. Southern whites even developed the term Uppity"N" for the Blacks who had the audacity to get more education and wealth than them.

You see when anyone, Black or White, uses the word, it is out of ignorance or self-hate.

Are you ready to say "Sorry" for he cross burnings, white only places, noose hangings, and hangings which were  a part of Alabama?

Know you surroundings

The biggest problem here is that Dog should have been aware of his surroundings.  Anyone that is on network TV is an influence in all of America.  His personal feelings are his own, but know who you are influencing.  Apologies are afterthoughts that makes it hard for the rest of us to overcome with our children who see this and then think it's okay for them.

When my daughter was in first grade, she came home and told me that everyone in this world is brown.  Some of us are really, really dark brown and some of us are really, really light brown.  All 3 of my girls are being raised under the philosophy that the outer appearance is not as important as the inner person.  Black, white, red, purple with pink polka dots.......it doesn't matter.  They are people and every person in this world no matter what ethnic background should not be judged by the color of their skin.  By the way, my daughters are interracial.....Mexican and white and they have  no problems defining who they are.

A little background about me, I grew up in a racial family.  My stepfather used to come home cussing about the people he worked with and using racial slurs.  He cannot stand the fact that I listen to Black Gospel Music.....yes, I clarified that because the whitest person could be singing the song and if it conforms to what he thinks is "black music" then he refuses to listen to it.  This is music worshipping God and he is still like this.  As far as I am concerned, this is where it stops in my family.

Sick & Tired

I am so sick & tired of all the "politicaly correct" garbage in AMERICA!

You are NOT "African American,Polish American ect... YOU ARE AMERICAN! ! Period!

As far as Black vs white... Look at how the AMERICAN Indian has been treated.

Do you hear them "cry"? What reactions do they get? Look at History.

I do agree that Raceism STARTS at HOME. Where it partically falls apart is BOTH parents or single parent homes have to WORK for a living and are NOT able to totally supervise, train the young.

The schools seem to take on that responsibility. Peer preasure accounts for one heck of a lot too.

They tell our kids what IS ok and what's NOT ok. Steps to turn your parent(s) in IF you don't like

how they react to YOUR feelings.

So called "Christians", they SEEM to talk the talk but DON'T walk the Walk!

Quit being PHONY, wake up! Not everyone agrees with everything. Put it where it belongs, get a GRIP and DEAL with life and STOP being such a "Cry baby"!

If you spent MORE time HELPING others to BETTER themselves and NOT self pity, MAYBE, just Maybe

the WORLD would be BETTER off.

11/09 Debate Dr. Phil and the Bishop

Quote From: ncrawler

You are part black but I wonder if you were raised with or without a racial identity.  I mean were you raised white or as just a citizen of the world, so to speak?

First.  It is NOT ok with the black community to have rappers use the N word or refer to women as ....  well, you know.  People assume it is because THE RECORD COMPANIES pay huge sums of money to these artists to do just that.

AS far as white people standing up when they are called names...  Heck yeah!  They have every right to.  Be vocal about it!  Nobody says they can't...

White pageants and such:  Guess what that was the way of this country.  Many things were white only.  Blacks were not allowed to be in beauty pageants, attend universities, eat in certain restaurants, hell, even water fountains were segregated.  Now that our community has our own pageants, our own universities and scholorships (by the way even those are now becoming integrated - just so you know) white people want to cry foul!

The NAACP is an orgainzation established to advocate for black people in America at a time when we desperately needed advocacy.  They do speak out against rap lyrics and the image porttrayed by black artists.  The media just doesn't seem to want to cover it.

Dog's comments:  Yes, we have all said things that we would hope would never come to light.  Difference?  When you are a public figure, there is no private life.

R U KIDDING - LOL- Blame the record companies ?  The record companies would never pay them a nickel if the disgusting words weren't selling to black youth who were brain washed by their parents who didn't take time to teach them to be outraged and offended by the rap words instead of buying it and repeating along with the rappers.  Talk about being in denial, and blame anyone but themselves.

What Differents is it to sterotyp People?
I have never lived in a trailer but with RECENT STATS OF 1 OF EVERY FOUR HOMELESS PERSONS BEING VETRANS - A TRAILER WOULD BE A WONDERFUL PLACE FOR PEOPLE WE SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF !!  Dr. Phil is NOT the person Oprah origionally endorsed, that is for certain.  Oprah never allowed fame to change her but Dr. Phil's big money job sure has changed him (or brought out who HE REALLY IS).
