(Original Air Date: 11/14/07) When Shawn’s daughter, Katherine, was only 16 years old, she made international headlines when she ran away to the Middle East to be with 20-year-old Abdullah, whom she met on MySpace -- a man she never met in person but was convinced she was in love with. The FBI intercepted her in Jordan and escorted her back to the United States. Unbeknownst to her family, Katherine secretly continued a relationship with Abdullah via the phone and the computer for two years. After turning 18, Katherine said goodbye to her family and left to be with Abdullah in the war-torn Gaza Strip. Katherine’s family is terrified that she’s never going to return. They think Abdullah is lying to Katherine and possibly even brainwashing her. They say when she calls, something doesn’t sound right. Is she afraid for her life, but unable to tell them? Is she being held against her will? Dr. Phil talks with Katherine via satellite from Palestine, and has some hard questions for Abdullah about his real intentions with Katherine. 11/14 A Daughter in Danger?

Quote From: stryker187

From my perspective this seems to be a whole lot of discrimination and intolerance.  If HE was from Ireland (also a warzone, more in the past though) no one would care.  This has to do for the most part with him being Muslim, and the general intolerance of Muslims worldwide since 911.  Most people think that Muslims are crazy, violent, misogynistic, and intolerant.  The reality is that Islam is allot closer to Christianity then most people think, first Christians Jews and Muslims all believe in the same god (Allah is just Arabic for god for all those without education) secondly and most importantly Muslims believe in Jesus, yes our Jesus, they believe him to be a prophet equal to the other 2 great prophets, Mohammed and Abraham.  They dont believe him to be the son of god or in the trinity as they see it as worshipping more than one god.  They have a view of Jesus close to early Gnostic Christians.  More than likely Mohammad was Christian before his revelation by Gabriel, just as Jesus was Jewish.  One more connection between Islam and Christianity is they share the same end times views that Jesus (Isa in Islam) will return to do battle with the antichrist.  Islam is also about 600 years younger than Christianity, my point, that 600 years ago Christianity was far more violent then Islam has ever been and it was radicals within Christianity.  God weeps when Christians Jews and Muslims fight.

My point in this history lesson is, what if all the hoopla has nothing to do with any real danger to her?  Yes I acknowledge that it is dangerous to live in the West Bank and he may very well be a bad guy, I dont know.

Oh and Christianity is just as misogynistic as Islam the difference is we read those parts of the bible and say 'I know it says that but it doesnt mean it or I will ignore it' whereas Muslims take the Quran very serious, if it says it, it is the word of god.

I am Christian btw in case anyone was going to suggest otherwise.

Stryker

I enjoyed reading your post. It's nice to see someone who can look at this objectively.

Tell me about it!!

Quote From: shannondd

I can not believe what I just watched...Dr. Phil I am shocked you did not call out her mom on her behavior and contributions to this situation.  I mean good lord it is not like it was a surprise she took off over there again.  I mean seriously what was her parents thinking....when she got brought home the first time why didnt they Disconnect the internet....disconnect her cell phone and change their home number??? I had a similar instance with my daughter and the first thing I did was disconnect the internet, sure she was mad but I didnt care, it was for her safety and it worked.  I have a very hard time sympathizing with this family on this, cause from what I can see they did NOTHING to stop this from happening then they act all surprised and hurt and shocked....what did they think would happen?  They did nothing to stop the communication for 2 whole years, so now they must reap what they have sowed...I hope the girl finds her way through all this and I hope this is a warning to other parents to be aware of such things we are not ment to be friends to our children....we are PARENTS no matter how mad they get at us.  And mom I hope you realize what contributions you have made to this situation...your not the victim, you were the passenger in a car that YOU were driving.  Take responsiblity for you part in all this.
COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that profiling? Discrmination? or pure racism?

The rate of occurence of US based abusive, and worse yet, pedohiles and criminals stalking, and kidnapping minors on the internet has been and will probably be more rampant than the one-off "Middle-Eastern" male, kidnapping a young blond woman and lurring her to the Middle-East.

Yet, this show, unfortunately, will only re-inforce the false image that the majority of the Western Civilization, and especially North Americans, have of the muslim Middle Eastern community.

Shame on you!! I do hope that you will add a disclaimer to your show, well prominent, and well heard that will warn against generalising, and building prejudicsm because of maybe a handful of such cases.

Once again, I feel for the young middle eastern man, on the bus, on the train, on the subway, and even worse, in an airport, trying to conduct his day-to-day usual business. The stares, whispers, and even worse - mistreatment - he will have, because of his color, because of shows like yours.

How about kids kidnapped by a parent and taken out of the US? How about young boys/girls lurred on the internet to meet with another AMERICAN pedophile?

Signed: An outraged "non-muslim-middle-eastern-now-living-in-north-america" woman

What about her?

I find it very odd how she tried very hard to show her affection to him at some points during the conversation. I honestly feel scared for her because it seems that she is lying. She is just as inconsistent with her words as he is. It just seems she really wants to come home, and then she takes it back. Just seems like she is being threatened and is just to scared to say anything. I know if i were in her shoes, i wouldn't know what to do. I don't even know this girl yet i am so worried. What can be done for her protection if and when she does come home. Maybe he will eventually convince her to go back there.... Then what can be done? Something fishy fishy fishy going on i tell yah!

Abdullah's credibility

It is important to understand that Fundamental Islamic culture does not conceptualize words like "love", "mercy", and "forgiveness" as we in a JudeoChristian culture.  Also "truth" becomes situational and not abolute.  We have a tendency to assume that others have our same or similar frame of reference.

11/14 A Daughter in Danger?

Quote From: bullroar

I think this family should give it up. If this girl is dumb enough to fall for this guy and go clear across the sea to get to him... then you can't do a thing about it. It's her life and she will be sorry some day and I would say sooner rather then later. But the family has no RIGHT to force her to do anything.  Say good bye and wish her luck.  She did it once and she will continue to do it.  All the family will do is throw good money and heart after bad, trying to get her back.  She is being bullheaded and maybe a little sick but she's of age.

PS  If she ever comes back to the US, I'd say watch her because she might be brain washed.

Obviously you DO NOT have children. As a mother I would never give up say goodbye and good luck knowing that my child (no matter what age) is in danger. Katherine's family has every reason to have doubts and fears for her saftey. She is in the Middle East for Gods sake, and our country is at war. You nerture them when they are small, help them thru the teen years and watch them grow as adults, but you never GIVE UP ON THEM. Yes she's making the mistake of her life, but she may never get the chance to be sorry about it.

I think he's just using her.

  1. I don't think Abdullah ever had any intention of coming to the States.
  2. I don't think he really cares about Katherine.
  3. I think he is just using her for carnal pleasures.
  4. I doubt that he bargained for all of this publicity.
  5. I think he is an immature spoiled brat.
  6. I think these new icons are very interesting, but I'm not really sure what to do with ALL of them.

she should run as fast as she can

A few years ago, I knew someone that married a Muslim man.  He tried to get her to go back to Iran with him and she did not want to go.  He made her wear traditional Muslim clothes for women making sure that she was covered from head to toe.  They ended up having a child together and he thought that he could control her.  He used to beat her and she would leave but everytime, she went back.  The last time I saw her, she was in the backseat of his car and she was going back home with her.  I am not sure what happened to her but from the things I saw in the past, I am not sure if she would ever be ok with him.  My advice to Katherine is to run.  Get out of that situation before it is too late.  You don't know him nearly enough to know what he has in store for you for the future.  After watching him on the satellite feed today, it is very clear to me that he has been lying to her and her family for the entire relationship and that he has alterior motives as to what his plans are for Katherine.  Get out and run.

Wolf on the prowl

Abdullah is definitely like a wolf on the prowl, seeking it's next meal. If it isn't Katherine, it might be someone else.
I hope that she has learned a lesson from all of this.
This guy has a line of bull a mile long and as long as there are unsuspecting young girls, this will continue to happen.

PARENTS BEWARE - THIS IS THE GUY TO WARN YOUR DAUGHTERS ABOUT!

It is not because they met online, many online relationships work

It is not because they met online, many online relationships work. I lived in Tennessee most of my life, but when I met my spouse online over 9 yrs ago, I knew it was the real thing. We did meet several times, in both countries, before I sold my house, told my family goodbye, and resigned my position. Through all this, we made it, and I have never been so happy!!! Of course, I am a bit older than this child, but legally she is an adult, and I think will see Dr. Phil's promise to get her out of the situation should she decide she is ready as a safety net. At the end of the show it showed 'katherine returns".......when will that show air?

I want to repeat, as I usually do, my favorite part of the show is STILL when Dr. Phil walks off that stage, takes Robin's hand and they walk away together!!!!!! THAT is an example of what a REAL love does!
