(Original Air Date: 11/14/07) When Shawn’s daughter, Katherine, was only 16 years old, she made international headlines when she ran away to the Middle East to be with 20-year-old Abdullah, whom she met on MySpace -- a man she never met in person but was convinced she was in love with. The FBI intercepted her in Jordan and escorted her back to the United States. Unbeknownst to her family, Katherine secretly continued a relationship with Abdullah via the phone and the computer for two years. After turning 18, Katherine said goodbye to her family and left to be with Abdullah in the war-torn Gaza Strip. Katherine’s family is terrified that she’s never going to return. They think Abdullah is lying to Katherine and possibly even brainwashing her. They say when she calls, something doesn’t sound right. Is she afraid for her life, but unable to tell them? Is she being held against her will? Dr. Phil talks with Katherine via satellite from Palestine, and has some hard questions for Abdullah about his real intentions with Katherine. 06/16 A Daughter in Danger?

Quote From: poppyseed454

YOU KNOW WHAT SHE IS 18 AND GUESS WHAT SHE IS OF AGE AND GET WITH THE REAL WORLD.

YOU CANT DO A THING AND SHE IS GOING ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

AND I DO FEEL SORRY BUT YOU CANT DO A THING GOOD LUCK SHE IS GOING TO DO WHAT SHE WANTS

Okay, please, please don't use caps the entire time your writting. Please, as a writer this blatant misuse of the caps lock makes me cringe!

Okay, on to why we are here.

I feel sorry for Catherin, I have a very open relationship with my mother. Maybe if she felt like she could talk to her mother openly without fear of rejection or judgement, then maybe she would have talked to her  mother about this. The Mom just called her daughter stupid - my gosh - when this all started, Catherin was 16 - the Mom had every right to have the bloody computer in the living, she could watch over her daughters should and ask her who she is talking to and what she is doing.

This is what my parents have done with my little siblings. My parents even have the pass-word to my personal lap top and my Mom knows all of my online screen names and pass words. It is this knowledge that helps my parents trust me. Why would I tell them these things if I didn't trust them to not touch my computer? The only time my Dad looks at my computer is when I have a software problem, or the time my brother was looking up porn. I didn't know till I went looking for a search that I couldn't remember, straight after I let my parents know and I changed the pass word on the computer. After that, it was parents that took care of everything else.

Anyway, even though Catherin didn't give her parents any troubles, doesn't mean that they can just not take responcibility. The internet can be dangerous. This is also why I don't use facebook or Myspace. I personally think its stupid, but these things do happen and not always can the guys of "To catch a predator" arrest these arrogant idiots.

Even if Catherin can get back home, she will have Stolkholme syndrom. Heck, she has it now. If she answeres to such names as the B-word than she has all ready been semi-conditioned by this man.

However, this family can't just stop being her family. They care a lot about her, Q.E.D. that's why they're on the show.

Okay, and all the international stuff, I concure, Abdilla or Abdulla...whatever the heck his name is, he should learn our culture just like Catherin should have learned his culture. In their culture it's quite acceptable to treat women like that. These boy's learn from their fathers and so on and so forth. They believe, now, I am not exactly sure, but from what I personally know, they believe women to be under them. That's why women are treated terribly over there.

This can happen anywhere. Men can be egotystical and treat the women in their lives like crap. But, I can tell you one thing, deep down inside, she really wants her Mom and family to help her fix this. She's eighteen, she is still learning about the world.

06/16 A Daughter in Danger?

Quote From: toyahlean

When I was a teenager one of my friends Chris Drowny was in State care. When she turned 18 she met an Arib guy and moved to the middle east.  About 3 years later she shown up on my doorstep with this man. He carried a breifcase and according to her, he never took it off his wrist. He went outside to smoke and she quickly told me that he wouldnt let her go. He even follows her to the restrooms when they go out to eat. I asked her what I could do and she told me there wasnt anything I could do. She was only allowed to visit for 15 minutes and then off she went. I never saw her again. I did try to the police but was told that unless she came forward to them there wasnt anythign they could do. Anyway, watching this story reminded me of Chris and I wonder what ever happened to her.
I feel for you, what you must be going through.  Are you going though the "What If's"  What if I had closed the door and called the police, did he have a bomb in the briefcase?  Did he have a gun?  Would we all die?  There maybe agencies that you can use to find out what happened to your friend.  Please seek them out.  What is Chris's family doing to find out what happened to her?

Yes community, please see that when you type in all CAPS you are yelling at someone, please use this when you are meaning to do it; not to talk with someone.  You maybe causing someone undo stress.  Now getting to the point, calling someone a Bit.. is common in this country (USA) as well as others, but it does not get beyond the meaning!  Its a degrading way to speak about a women.  To even have the word not blocked on TV means to me its ok to speak this way about a women.  And personally, I call men the same thing, if they act like it, I call it like I see it.  Now an days a computer in a kids bedroom has become the normal, but we can see it the same way if we give our kids a loaded gun and say to them use it wisely.  Then we have to take the responsibilty of the outcome.  Who knows the family history, of course she has low self esteem, otherwise he could not call her a Bit.., and she's ok with it.  Yes she's 18, and that means she's an adult, even though this started at 16.  What can they do now?  Its on her to get out the bad situation she put herself into.  God help her.  I belief she wants to come home but doesn't know how.

If it was my daughter

She is very young and obviously had some underlying issues before she left.    It's true there is absolutely no one you can live without to the person who stated that ...in reality.  But, she is in serious danger no doubt about it and lets face it, none of us would want our daughters in this situation.  I would do everything in my power to get her back to the U.S. with out that guy.   He would be here by now if he was sincere and I'd be going in to get her and knock some sense into her and him to stay away and when he called the house asking or  mumbling to talk to her...I would of never gave her the phone.  Change phone number disconnect the internet and take her cell phone away... what ever it took.  There no being nice about this situation.  It's not good and she needs to come back to U.S. without him. Obviously his intentions are no good either and the cultural differences are too great and obsurd for a beautiful american girl like that or any AMERICAN WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote From: foursonshavei

Dear Dr. Phil,

Why in the world when Catherine went the second time, did not one of her family members go with her to assure her safety, assess the relationship and provide guidance?  It is absurd they "dropped her off at the airport".  Any normal family would have worked throught this.  They would have sent a mother, father, or trusted relative to meet the family.  Her family was greatly at fault for sending her the second time without a sup[ort system and guidance.  They may have been reassured of Abdallah's intentions, and bonded with the family.  That will probably not happen now.

Not all cross cultural marriages are doomed.  I know.  I am an American married to an Arab and lived in the West Bank for 25 years.  Yes, there are adjusments, but a cross cultural marriage need not be a sad story.

So far, all that we have heard is "her families" side of the story.  You do not know what Katherine told Abdallah's family  when they arranged for the trip..  She might have said she had permission to visit, not unheard of for a minor child who thinks she in love to lie to others.  Do not judge until you have heard both sides of the story.  Even the use of the word "Bitch" is not a common word in the Middle East and may have been misunderstood. Catherine may have taught them that word.

Withold judgement, weigh the situation.  They may truly be in love, and may have a wonderful life.  Give it a chance.  Cross cultural marriages can enrich the members of both sides of the family

Why would a mother drop her daughter off at airport to go to such a place or anywhere for that matter to meet some guy.  Too bad.  Very sad situation.

Daughter In Danger

Quote From: jewelsf

Since Abdallah is supposed to be a grown man shouldn't it have been his responsibility to learn our culture before his father sneaks her away to a foreign country? In the USA it is not custom for underage girls to be married at the age of 16 or to have a prearranged marriage. Her mother has every right to oppose this relationship considering the manner in which they went about it. Is he not ignorant of our culture in this country? You say that if her family had a better understanding of his culture that they could have had a better relationship with Abdallah and his parents? I think that idea was blown out of the water the minute the father had a hand in this. This is wrong!  They deceived her mother from the beginning, she never even knew that there was a relationship. How would you expect her to react? I support the mother in this and hope that this young girl will come to her senses.
Your right, his father had a responsibilty to learn our customs, it was not right for him to aid in her leaving our country, and he should be held responsible for his actions!  What is being done about this!  I have not heard anything about what charges are bring brought against the father. Believe me this is not the first or the last.  But now its a mute point, she's 18 and its too late.  All those with unattended computers in your households, beware!

06/16 A Daughter in Danger?

Quote From: hkuhail

I watched the show recently and was chocked to learn about the story.  Being a Palestinian, I became even more angry than Cathrine's family of .  I am happy that Cathrine is back to her family and wish them all the best.  I dont know whether my appologies would mean any thing to them, but I am really sorry.  On a final note, this person (Abdullah) is a bad representation to humanity, not to mention Palestinians.

Yes he is and just made my opinion even worse yet.  I would like to see some of these people make a good difference to be noticable to America! ...and to treat there women with respect rather than like animals!

Middle East Romeo and Juliet

Quote From: bullroar

I think this family should give it up. If this girl is dumb enough to fall for this guy and go clear across the sea to get to him... then you can't do a thing about it. It's her life and she will be sorry some day and I would say sooner rather then later. But the family has no RIGHT to force her to do anything.  Say good bye and wish her luck.  She did it once and she will continue to do it.  All the family will do is throw good money and heart after bad, trying to get her back.  She is being bullheaded and maybe a little sick but she's of age.

PS  If she ever comes back to the US, I'd say watch her because she might be brain washed.

First of all, she's not a victim.  She chose to get involved with him.  She obviously sees something in him.  Oh no, he's Arabic, therefore she must have been brainwashed!  Why would a good white girl fall for a Middle Eastern man?  Absolutely rediculous!  You mean there's a brainwashing technique that you can apply online?  Maybe.  Maybe she was brainwashed when she fled at 16.  But wait up, she went again after she turned 18.  What the hell!  She must still be brainwashed(sarcasm) or she was waiting till she's an adult to be with him.  Seems like its the latter.  Definitely, she is is being naive and foolish, but come on, she's not a victim!  Lets call it what it is, a foolish act by a young and naive girl who can't see beyond the now, and not a child thats victimized by the the all evil internet and the all evil middle eastener.   Please.....
