Dr. Phil follows up with a family terrified for the safety of their loved one, Katherine, a young woman who flew to the Middle East to be with Abdullah, whom she met online. When she last spoke with Dr. Phil, Katherine promised that she would return to the United States within two days, but immediately after the show, she changed her mind. Find out what happened during two failed attempts to get Katherine home, and what finally got her on a plane. Then, Katherine’s mother, Shawn, and sister, Mary, say they were overwhelmingly relieved to have her back safe, so why didn’t they greet her at the airport? Katherine joins her family onstage and offers her tearful apologies. After hearing how her actions have affected her family and Dr. Phil’s staff, will Katherine go back to Abdullah, or will she have a change of heart? Join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

You're generalizing

Quote From: mariamq

Following are some rights, which Muslim women have!

1. The RIGHT and duty to acquire education.

2. The RIGHT to have her own independent property.

3. The RIGHT to work [job or business to earn money, which she keeps it.

4. The RIGHT to equal reward for equal deed and/or work.

5. The RIGHT to express her opinion.

6. The RIGHT to argue and/or advocate her cause or opinion to be heard.

7. The RIGHT to vote since 1,421 years.

8. The RIGHT to provisions from her husband for all her needs and more.

9. The RIGHT to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.

10.The RIGHT to obtain divorce from her husband, even on the grounds that she simply don't like him. In Islaam divorce is suppose to be last resort.

11.The RIGHT to keep all her own money. [She is not responsible for maintenance of family.

12.The RIGHT to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.

13.The RIGHT to get custody of her children in case of divorce [unless she is unable to raise them for valid reasons

14.The RIGHT to choose husband of her choice.

15.The RIGHT to refuse a proposed and/or arranged marriage.

16. The RIGHT to re-marry after divorce or after becoming widow.

The topic is NOT about Islam. But PLEASE do not generalize. Muslim women in one country do not necessarily have the same rights at Muslim women in other countries.

For instance, Turkey is more European than most other Muslim-dominated countries. Women there have many rights. But in Saudi Arabia, Iran and other such places they have fewer rights.

Take the case in Iran at this time. A woman was savagely raped by a group of men. She is now facing a year in jail and hundreds of lashes because she was in a car with a man (and she didn't have a male relative with her at that time). They shortened her jail sentence but UPPED the number of lashes because she brought her case's attention to the media. What a way to silence future rape victims!!!

Many Saudi women would still love to drive to their employment, but their opportunities are fewer due to the govt refusing to allow them this "right."

Just as Christian religions differ by countries, by state and by parish, Muslim "rights' differ as well.

You are SOOOOO angry; it's very sad

Quote From: mariamq

oh forgot to say.... You people sure make it easy to obtain guns and go on shooting spree's killing your calssmates...

This country needs to fix it's self before attacking others!...

Oh thats right, Your govt is more fixated on stealing oil than helping it's own people!

Grow up!

You are filled with hate, which is so sad. Life is too short to hate. People who love God and love themselves don't make room for hate in their lives.

.

Did you ever think that some people may have cared about the people of Iraq with 2/3 of Iraqi's slaughtered, tortured and/or allowed fewer freedoms because they were not Sunni?

.

Where is all that oil Americans supposedly went to war with. At over $3.00 a barrel, I have to laugh at your notion. You sound like many on the far left who hate our president more than they hate dictators.

.

Were we attacking Germany when we saved the Jews from the Nazis? I don't think the Shiites and Kurds believe we were attacking them in Iraq. How convenient that some people have forgotten the monster Saddam was. Why was it that Muslim nations didn't stand up again Saddam, the leader of Iran and others who deny freedoms and kill those who speak out against the government?

And who are "you people?" Do you realize how prejudice you sound? Pre-judging ANYBODY is always bad. You are either very young (and angry) or older and simply immature (angry, too).

By the way, my husband is a federal officer. We have 4 guns in the home, all with trigger locks. When I travel alone with my children, I bring a gun with me (I have a permit to carry a concealed weapon). I taught school for years and I have never shot anybody. The only person I would ever shoot is someone threatening the lives of my husband, my children or me. Does that make me a bad person? I don't think so. When I am not traveling, I am taking Communion to elderly residents in a nursing home, finding baby formula and food for a migrant program or taking loads of canned goods to a local food pantry.

I hope to God that you are not in the United States enjoying all our freedoms. People still migrant here by the millions and many even sneak into this great country. Whenever a country has LOTS of freedoms (yes, we even get to elect our leaders and can speak out against those leaders), there will be problems that come with it. Does that make this country bad? Of course not. We're also the number 1 country for giving aid to foreign countries, but many like to forget all the good the U.S. does YEARLY.

You really need to stop stereotyping and generalizing. The topic is on Katherine, her boyfriend and her parents. I shall say a prayer for you; may you toss out all the hatred you hold in your heart. God bless.

11/26 Katherine Returns

I am glad Catherine is back home and she got a second chance to look at her life.
I hope this was about Abdullha's actions and not his country of origin or religion.
This show to me was about giving Catherine the opportunity to make her choice without the pressure of an abussive, controling boyfriend, and she did.
To her family, please let it go! She made a mistake but she came back, it was hard but at the end she was brave and as Dr Phil said, she is taking those first steps into adulthood.  If you received her  at home again then, do it right; Forgive her and embrace her. I hope there is some counseling for this family.

tv education

Dr. Phil,

I am an American woman married to a man from Saudi Arabia.  Many people as you know are educated through TV programs.  Many programs are talk shows that are reputable like Oprah, the View and your show.  However, I feel that in a time of so much ignorance and hatred toward the middle east, a show that can promote understanding of the culture should either show that or not at all.  Why  portray a negative side that exists in any culture. I understand you showing an abusive situation of a woman, a woman may feel supported and may become empowered and speak out, but to portray an arab man in this situation is feeding into the ignorance that all arab man are abusive and that all women married to arab men may suffer the same fate.  How many men in America and in other countries treat their women in the same fashion.  Just in the first show, the Aunt of this girl stated how we don't allow our men to talk to us like that here in the USA.  Do they really believe all women in arab countries do?  Do you? Nobody should allow abuse but I think that somehow your show is somehow giving false information of what the majority of  women in arab countries will stand for.  Their are ignorant submissive women in all parts of the world including the USA as their are bully abusive men in the world including here.  I just think that in this day and age where people are being educated through the media, and where fear and hatred are in the midst concerning anybody of Muslim faith, that professionals should really study what to put on shows that can add to the ignorance and arrogance of our country.  I have always thought your show to be fair but this show really portrays our Arab husbands and American Children in a way that the majority truly are not.  Please state that in your show for you have no idea what scrutinizing our children live being Arab Americans and have to defend because of others ignorance of the culture.

  • This show is to warn parents that they should keep a close eye on thier children's use of the internet.

Yes in you're experience in you're culture where you live, you have these rights. But not all Muslims in every country have those rights, just the same as all different faiths in this country can be practiced freely it doesn't mean all faiths have those freedoms around the world. many people of different faiths are persecuted in other countries for their faith. We cant  assume all faiths have these rights, wed like to think they do but in some countries it is not so. also it is a fact that in some cultures woman are not treated well and have no rights.. Muslim included. This show was not about religion anyway ... it was about Katherine.

11/26 Katherine Returns

Quote From: lifeslikethat

I'm from an Arabic background, while I was Born in Australia my parent are Lebanese, and let me tell you an Arab is the last person I would trust, only because I was in a similar situation. I married a man from Lebanon, not long after he got his citizenship we separated and  are now divorced he went on to get married again.  I'm also a Muslim, and rarely do Muslim marry for love, I got married all for the wrong reasons, funny enough a Muslim marriage is statistically better than a non-Muslim marriage.  I haven't seen the show but from what I have read his only in it for a visa to the US. IF she comes back, make sure he doesn't get into the country, save the US government  a headache, and spare her family. I should say that not all Arabs are the same, my brother and sisters married Lebanese men and woman and their marriages are fine. Marrying young is a mistake waiting to happen, especially to someone you don't know, trust me I should know.
I don't see how; after Katherine's account of his abuse, biting, kicking and belting her; his threats against her family, should she not return to him; and his behavior on today's show; Abdullah could ever get a  US visa.  To get a visa; he'd need a valid reason; such as school or work. But, to visit a girl no longer interested in him? Or, to "torture"her family? Surely, he'd be denied a visa.

Good Points

Quote From: celticspirit

Oh cmon!

There is enough hate in the world without seeing it here on the Dr Phil message boards!!!

Sheesh!    I have lived in several different countries and have seen the best and worst in several different cultures - there are good and bad apples every where.

This show is not to debate the laws of Islam or anything else.   How many interpretations of there to the Holy Bible???  To the Koran??  There are extremists and fascists in every corner  We need to have a strong sense of self and right from wrong and what we need to do to be safe in the world.

Of utmost importance --- Katherine is home, safe and sound.    Can her mother keep her there?  Who knows??  Katherine is 18 and able to legally make her own choices.   Best case scenario she learned that she values herself as a person and woman, and chooses not to be treated with disrespect and violence, and will seek partners that share her vision of a healthy and nonabusive relationship.  Or better yet... go back to school and put 'men' on the back burner for a while!  Focus on herself and career.

Once again --- there are good in bad in every gender, race, creed and culture.   Part of the problem is that throughout the world, we are at different stages of evolving both individually and as part of communities and cultures.  Ethnocentrism and Egocentrism are destroying us.  I dont know of ONE religion that condones shedding the blood of another human being. The God that I know is loving and wants us to walk in his footsteps which means LOVING one another.  Not killing and hating each other for our beliefs.

I agree with what you said, this shouldn't be about religion or culture for that matter, there are good people of all religions and parts of the world. Being Muslim myself I admit when this show first aired I was upset because I felt that some may assume that Abdullah's actions represent the majority of Middle Eastern and/or Muslim men but he does not. In my view he is just an insecure person who feels the need to control Katherine with lies as he is most likely a weak person. Katherine could have met an abusive guy anywhere but in the begining I saw a lot of stereotyping going on in the message boards. I am happy to read such reasonable, objective words on the board currently. It was seriously getting rediculous for a while...
