(Original Air Date: 11/27/07) Dr. Phil follows up with a family torn apart when the mother was banned from her only son’s wedding. The bride-to-be, Michelle, said she’d rather burn in hell than let her future mother-in-law, Jane, attend the ceremony, and her fiancé, Jay, stood behind her decision. This sent the entire family into a tailspin, with the best man resigning, the aunt disowning the groom and the wedding planner on alert to call 911 if Jane showed up. The big day has come and gone, and everyone returns to update Dr. Phil with the latest. Were they able to bury the hatchet before the wedding? Jane has gone through a rollercoaster of emotions, and Dr. Phil finds out what has her so mad at him, she even wrote him a scathing letter one week after her appearance. Has Jane done a 180-degree turn since? Has Michelle stopped her “campaign of hate mail” as Jane called it and opened up her arms to her husband’s mother? Share your thoughts, join the discussion.

Find out what happened on the show.

Been there and still there

I think Dr. Phil needs to realize that not all mother -in-laws are nice people. I have been with my spouse for 35 years. He is an only child to an overbearing, old fashioned Italian mother. I am also a mother-in-law, and I take into account all that I have had to endure for 35 years, in how I approach my own son and his wife. I have turned the other cheek and swallowed enough to sink a battle ship! So as I watched this show I tried to stay neutral, and I also feel that the son could have done more, but depending on what he put up with as a child growing up, he may just be too tired to deal with his own mother. We raise our children and then we have to let them fly and grow and enjoy their own life, and mothers have to realize they will always be a part of their son or daughters life, but in a different capacity once they become adults (just as we all did).

banned from the wedding

What a shame!  That family is going to be in for years of problems.  I have to wonder how long it will take for the son to wake up and see that his new bride is a spoiled rotten control freak. The mother might not be perfect but she doesn't appear to be as mean spirited as the bride, actually she just looks like a mother fighting for a place in her sons life which the spoiled girl is not going to let her have. Really sad.

The SON

I personally do not understand why the son has to have his face covered up, is it because he does not want all his co-workers, friends and the world to know that he is so whipped by this new wife of his! He is a poor excuse for a son...to put his new wife above his mother is totally uncalled for, does he not realize that his Mom will always be there for him after the bride is history.....they come and go but family is family and will be there always for you! His wife with her little Vally Girl attitude makes me crazy, and I feel sorry for the son to think he married such a self rightous little gold digger in my opinion...and has no self worth and as I see it  she is just wanting all the drama and is getting off on it. She looks at the Mom like "HA HA "Bitch I got him", "HOW YA LIKE ME NOW" She has a lot of growing up to do and the son needs to rethink his thoughts where his Mom is concerned , get his nose out of his wifes ass and BE A MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It does come around

It is sad to see that this couple is so vindictive and spiteful, arrogantly so. Dr. Phil was correct to say, both young people are ungracious. They will see their behavior reflected back at them, as soon as they raise their own children. The mother saw it in her son, who chose to marry someone exactly like his mother. I'm impressed the mother is actively taking part in improving herself. If the young couple could attempt to do the same, they would see that all these steps can do nothing else but lead to someone who is making changes. They would be wise to follow a life path of continuous improvement themselves.  The world is not going to revolve around them, as it did during the wedding preparations, and they have to get ready to be able to be responsible for their actions and to face the myriad of challenges that will face them.

Michelle,

What an awful unkind child this  Michelle person is...i am amazed her mother would show her face if this was my daughter i would hide in shame.  Michelle i hope you read this because if you don't get it soon your marriage is doomed ... You don't chose to be tall or smart or pretty the ONLY thing you chose is whether or not to be kind ....looks fade ...money goes... time marches on... but if you marry a kind person you can be happy forever....you are very unkind.

I am assuming that we don't know the whole story but unless your mother in law slapped you silly and threw you down the stairs you are way out of line . My mother in law was beyond the pale on every level and i am still  bristle when i think of some of the stuff she pulled even thought shes been dead for 12 years but you know what? She NEVER knew it she NEVER had cause to complain about how i treated her ...I bit my tongue.. i smiled... did the holidays  etc....out of respect for my husband and out of respect for her age. maybe a little because if i had let my feelings out i would be in the mess you are now ...

Husband is a sissy-boy wimp,wife is evil.

Quote From: lclaus

I am sorry but I have been sitting here watching and I can not believe the wife is so selfish. I would be worried if my husband treated his mother like that. To me it shows a total disrespect for her and if he is willing to do that to his mother there is nothing to stop him from doing that to his wife. His wife needs to grow up and stop making everything about her. If she does not want to be around his mother then fine but he needs to stand up to his wife and see his mother.
Those two brats are some of the biggest jerks I have ever had the displeasure of seeing on tv.Dr.Phil let those two off too easy.If that were my son I would disown his pansy rear end.The witch he married is a mistake that he should be left to handle on his own.How can the mother want to be around two creeps like them anyway? They could not pay me enough to spend five seconds in their company. The son is such a sissy he wouldn't show his stupid face.I don't blame him though. If I was that much of a wimp I wouldn't have the nerve to either.I hope someday they need the mother for something and she tells them to drop dead.I don't know who the bitchy wife thinks she is but I know what she is.An ugly monster.

You'll be sorry

Dr.Phil, This show upsets me very much due to the fact that this happened when my mother and father got married back in 1950. Supposedly my mother and my fathers mother had words about something, so my mother just wrote her off ( my mother can be very stubborn). She never gave any thought to anyone else in the family, such as my brother and sisters. We grew up without my grandparents and aunt and cousins on my fathers side. We even went  to visit my other grandmother in the city on holidays and my mother would point out my fathers mother walking down the street, but we weren't aloud to talk to her. My mother has no idea what her little spat caused her family. My grandparents are gone now and I never knew them. I do remember my dad going to visit a couple of times over the years, but not us. My younger sister and I just recently found our cousins. We're all about the same age and all live on long island. We are kind of chicken to contact them and get together. Maybe you can make a show out of that. LOL. Well I hope this new bride reads this and realizies what can happen over something so stupid. Thanks for listening. Diane

I can't believe the son

It is unbelievable that Jane's son would do something so outrageous like he did.

I still have'nt understood what Jane did that the little bitch would be calling her a lying about in the first and the second segment of the show.  I am happy that my son isn't like him.  Is the little witch that good as to make him disown his own mother.

I do love your  show.

DR. PHIL DIDN'T GET IT ....

Dr. Phil didn't get it -- Michele doesn't understand the concept of being "gracious" or even a good winner -- she wasn't raised to be a woman with class - she seems to behave and act like an overly spoiled over-indulged princess.  I'd go as far to say that she isn't able to maintain too many friendships as she wouldn't be able to allow her friends to have other close friendships.

Its sad - but unless Jay grows up and takes responsibility for his own relationship with his mom Jane won't have one with them - Michele is only going to allow contact under her terms and her whim and when its convenient for her and suits her - and even when faced with the reasonable men in his family he still couldn't stand up and say "I"  he immediately reverst to the "we".

Disrespect for his mother, what a desgrace

Dr. Phil, I have never disagreed with you assessment of a situation.  The questions you continually directed at the mother, made it seem as though this was all her fault.  I got the impression, that Michelle, is the problem.  If I was the mother, I would cut off all conversation and communication, with that no good spinless son of hers, and I wouldn't want that Michelle, for a daughter in law, ever.  She can say all she wants about not wanting the added stress at the wedding.  I think she has problems with the new hubby, himself and needs marriage counseling.  I am very seldom wrong, about people, My bet is this marriage, WILL NOT LAST 6 mONTHS.  SORRY, DR. PHIL,  I don't think you can save this one.  I am glad you helped the mother, so she can move on and enjoy her life away from that self-righteous, OH SO WRONG, Michelle.   That son, is going to be so sorry, because  God, tells us Honor  your Mother.  I think you should reward her for all her efforts, and the tong bitting she did today.  You should tell that Michelle, to sit and watch tapes a few hundred times.  I don't have children of my own.  But, I've raised many children, with my company, and the one thing I've always, taught them is "Respect Your Mother", no matter what kind of mom they had.  I have turned may Young Men, from troubled homes, lives around.  Simple with this, philosophy.
