(Original Air Date: 11/29/07) Obesity is a huge problem for adults in this country, but now it’s becoming an epidemic among young children. Barbra says her 3-year-old daughter started gaining weight at six months old and now weighs 80 pounds. Barbra and her aunt, Dana, are baffled by what they believe is a medical mystery because they say the little girl doesn't overeat. Dr. Phil brings in two medical experts to get to the bottom of this issue. Is Barbra contributing to her child's weight gain? Then, Tammy says she can’t change her family's eating habits. She's obese, her 11-year-old is 175 pounds and her 9-year-old is 136 pounds. Her sister, Debbie, says the boys portion sizes are too big and the family is just lazy. Can Dr. Phil get Tammy to stick to a nutrition plan? You won’t believe the surprise he has for her! Plus, Jessica says her mom, Angie, is blind to the health issues of her 351-pound sister, Jaleisa, who is only 15. Jessica says her mom never buys healthy food, and she fears her mom has Munchausen’s syndrome. Angie says she can’t monitor Jaleisa’s eating habits all day. Can Angie turn this situation around and save her daughter’s life, or is it too late? Talk about the show here.

Find out what happened on the show.

Despirate for Help for my adult son

While watching this show, I have one question: How can you help a person who is  not a child but is extremely obese to get help for himself. My son, Michael, is 37 years old and weighs 500 lbs. He had a heart attack last year and I am very worried about him. I have written Dr. Phil at least five times and never gotten any reply. It is possible for child welfare to force a child to get help, but I need an intervention for my son. Please contact me this time so I can get him help, so he doesn't die before he is 40. He lives in Austin, TX. Barbara

11/29 Too Big, Too Young

Quote From: melissamize

I received advice when I was pregnant over 20 years ago. A woman I did not know came up to me in the department store. We started talking. I told her this was my first (and only) child. She said she had received advice by her mother, and she wanted to share it with me because it was so helpful and she found it really worked. She wanted to share that gift with someone else. She said her mother told her if you do not keep your children busy, they will find bad things to keep themselves busy with, and you do NOT want that. She said her sons were then in high school and in every sport or club that was available for the season. She said they also volunteered. She said this would help them to not only stay busy, keep out of trouble, but also to perhaps receive college scholarships for their sports. No one has ever cared about me before or since to offer such wonderful advice as this. Matter of fact, no one has ever given me advice in my life about parenting, except this one stranger. I thank her. I thought of her hundreds of times over the many years and appreciated her and her mother. My daughter has stayed very busy in Girl Scouts. She is about to turn 20. She was too shy to be in sports, but also active in church and volunteering in youth and community service events. She does it on her own now at age 20 out of habit, helping and volunteering in the community. Although this may not help completely with obesity, it DOES deep their mind off food, and keep them busy. My daughter is going to college now, volunteers, and works at a public library. She was able to keep weight off by keeping busy. I saw none of this in the children on the show today. Only one time did someone mention their child was active a half hour per day, but did not say what that activity was. That could play Nintendo which is fine for rainy days, but not for everyday life. Life is habitual. Make good habits for your child at a young age, and they will keep them. (Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it) . That SHOULD help, but some children do need extra help. Best wishes to you and yours.

I only have one thing to say LOCK THE CUPBOARDS AND FRIDGE, you are the adult..

11/29 Too Big, Too Young

Quote From: shmigelz

Everyone has their own opinion on things BUT, my personal opinion and also from my past, history, growing up and learning and experience is that IF the mother is overweight and the daugther is overweight and NO medical problems can be found, then common sense would tell you that BOTH the parents diet and therefore the kids diet is completely BAD, WRONG, ETC, ETC. It can be a combination of not being educated on what foods are good, which are bad and also a lack of exercise, lack of energy, and a poor overall situation for both the mother and child.

If something says 'low fat' it does not mean eat all you want and you won't get FAT. The BIGGEST misconception that people make is that its NOT fat that makes you necessarily FAT but bad carbs and sugars that will add on the pounds very, very fast. So eating breads, pasta's, potatoes, chips, and also things in high sugars will automatically store as fat and unless you know alot about nutrition, dieting, healthy lifestyle and how to read labels on foods then your behind the 8 ball from the get go..

When I was about 8 yrs old until about 15yrs old I was the 2nd youngest of 4 kids. I was the ONLY kid that was a 'bit' heavy boned I guess. I wasn't fat but I wasn't skinny like the rest of the family. I hated getting teased by my brothers and also I was a year ahead of myself in school and also smaller then others and a bit chunky and I would get picked on, teased and name called to the point where I did something about it.

First off I started educating myself on foods, whats good, whats bad, what foods are made of and what are the do's and dont's about eating. In addition to that I ALSO purchased a gym membership and started working out 6 days/week for 2 hrs a day. I didnt like it at first but I stuck it out and started to LOVE it once changes started to be seen on my body. Another BIG MISTAKE people make is that IF they dont see instant changes, or nothing happens right away, they stop and quit and give up. It's easier to give up right?

It did take a couple months, YES A COUPLE MONTHS but once I noticed changes to my body, I couldnt stop and after a while people started asking me for advice on working out and eating properly. NOW which is almost 10 yrs since I started working out and eating right, I look amazingly good, feel good and get lots of people coming up to me at the gym, even in public asking me for help and Im always willing to help people who truely want it. Its not an easy, simple thing to change your lifestyle and your body, BUT ALSO people who are FAT and overweight and OBESE, if you ask yourselfs it DIDNT happen overnight either right??? SO don't expect it to be fixed overnight either...

I will PROMISE anyone that it DOES get easier. The HARDEST part of any lifestyle change is the first 2 weeks but after that it becomes a habit and gets easier everyday after that. Also exercising even 45 minutes a day will give you so much benefit in so many ways.

I could talk about this forever and ever on here but its not as hard as it may seem. But it will only happen if you want it! IF IT WAS EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT! I live by that MOTO!

A few EASY things I LIFE BY, kind of like my RULES of the ROAD!

1) Workout at the gym atleast 5 days/week for 1 hr.20 min  1 hour weights and 20 min cardio. Even 45 minutes at the gym is amazingly beneficial! 45 minutes thats nothing right!

2) Eat smaller balanced meals. I eat 6 smaller meals/day and NOT 3 BIG ONES!

3) PERSONALLY I LOVE HIGH PROTEIN and moderate/low carb meals. That may be extreme to some people but I like it that way. It keeps me muscular and lean year around. Even in the summer I test myself and get under 5% bodyfat. Yea to some that may be extreme or unhealthy but keep in mind its only for summer time I do it and its only for short periods of time.

4) NEVER eat LATE at night UNLESS its ONLY either protein and/or fibre. So like chicken breasts, tuna, fish, lean meats (turkey, wild meat, roast beef, chicken, and even some hams), Protein shakes, cottage cheese, and for fibre eating cucumber, celery, salads and fibre cookies/wafers. Also never eat sugar late at night.

5) Alcohol is EMPTY CALORIES! No matter what! IF you MUST have a couple drinks now and then, red wine and something like a low carb beer maybe or like a gin and diet coke is ok.

6) WATCH for SUGAR! its evil! No regular POP! no chocolate bars, no junk! Also low fat don't mean crap! Its not that fat, but read the nutritional label. Check out HOW many carbs/sugar there is PER SERVING remember! so don't forget to multipl;y that by how many servings are in the package/bottle!

7) As for me I eat 1.5 grams protein per 1 pound of body weight. And I eat 1/2 the carbs per 1 pound of bodyweight. Remember that is a bit extreme to some people but eating that way will guarntee amazing results in a little time :) For normal people eat  1 gram protein/1 pound of body weight and make sure your carbs are less then that.

8) That doesnt mean by any means that you can't have a cheat meal or some foods that arent the best for you. But remember everything in moderation! As for me I eat good all week and reward myself on Saturdays with a lunch/supper of whatever I want, pizza or steak sandwich and some ice cream of a blizzard from Dairy Queen. Truthfully infact eating something 'bad' for you one day a week will HELP you loose MORE weight! and also keep your sanity!

Sorry to blab on and on but its really not that hard, although there is alot of misguided people who think they are eating good when they are not.

If your lazy and overweight don't blame anyone but yourself. Its up to you and thats all it is. So overweight people can get mad, get jealous and say whatever they want. But the reality is the reality!

If I had to say, THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT FOOD NEVER SAYS NO! and that alot of people are emotional eaters and are FLAT OUT LAZY, and DEPRESSED and just make up EXCUSES!

I personally know men that over in their 40's that are is 1000 times better shape then teenagers and people in their 20's cause they workout and eat properly!

Hope that helps! and remember.. IF IT WAS EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT!

Are you a nutritionist or dietitian?  All overweight people are not lazy or depressed or make up excuses!  They might have a thyroid condition, such as hypothyroidism, which makes you gain weight for no reason.  Rude comments are not helpful.

Two Diverse points:

First:  I think most of the problem stems from how we feed infants and toddlers.  A child shouldn't even know what a soda pop, juice, candy, or fried food TASTES like until at least 18mo-2yo, older if possible.  (easier with the first child).  If you can just be vigalent those first few years, their tastes develop to prefer the healthier foods.  Then, later, they might eat some of the unhealthy stuff, but they aren't as likely to make it a part of their lives like they do if they have been trained to prefer unhealthy foods.

In an ideal world, all babies should also be breastfed.  Formula has it's place, certainly, but breastfeeding encourages, by it's very nature, the ability for a child to self regulate.  You can't force a baby to overeat if they are breastfed...they will use a nutrative suck until they are full, and after that, a comfort suck.  You can't make them get milk if they aren't hungry.  They self regulate.  There is no message to "just finish that last ounce" of the bottle like there can be with formula.  Breastfeeding, besides all of the other health benefits, also gets a child ready for a more varied palate and more willing to try new foods.  Formula tastes the same at every feeding, breastmilk almost never does.

My second, almost completely different point:  I really wish that Dr. Phil would modify his statement of "they will eventually eat".  Yes, it is true in most cases.  Yes, most of the problems stem from parents lacking the backbone to cope with a tantrum because kids don't want to eat what is served to them.  However, there are cases of kids who will, literally, starve themselves before eating something.  My son is autistic and that is one of the things that comes along with it.  The blanket statement further alienates people from understanding some of the issues surrounding autism and and other differences that have a sensory or food component as part of the challenges.  If I have to hear one more person spouting that I think I will just lose it.  The difficulty with weight gain of many kids with this issues is testament to the fact that they will not "always eat it...eventually".

too big

Wow,  how can you  be so confused about  your child's weight?  On the  clips  you can see the pop, the whip cream, the candy, cookies in the background.  HELLO, that is the problem.  Instead of pop, how about water, or fat free milk.  The overweight people are the ones with the most excuses and the least education about nutrition and exercise.  Our children learn by example.  Let's try to make that example a healthy one.

11/29 Too Big, Too Young

Quote From: angelface_

I have been meaning to say this all season (since it began) THANK-YOU so much Dr Phil and bringing back common sense. I sometimes have felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall, because it seems like our society today has forgotten all about common sense, I know it isn't always the easy way but anything worth well sometimes take alittle work.
So again thanks so very much Dr Phil for bringing it to peoples attention and please keep reminding us.
Some of these people should be charged with child endangerment.

11/29 Too Big, Too Young

When I watched the show today,I couldnt help but to think about my years of eating problems.I pray that these kids never fall into my path. When I was 13,I started binge eating and put on around 150 pounds and after the incesent teasing from family and friends,I started the bulimic behaviors.I lost it all and became thin again. When I started having my children the weight was on and off again. When my ex husband hit me with a car and injured my hip permenetly I started putting on the weight again over the past few years.I am now losing the weight again and am starting to feel a bit better about myself as I am now educating my self on the right ways to eat.I think above all else someone should mentor these kids and show them how eating healthy and exercise can be fun not just a chore.Loosing can be the hardest thing they ever do,because it is just as much mental as physical.

Look at the moms... the poor kids

Poisoning their kids pretty much.. how sad. Look at the moms on this show.. Of course they're going to defend themselves because they're pretty much as big as their kids are! Stop making excuses, the majority of society in the States and Canada are lazy! and BIG! Stop making excuses and just DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.. the majority of the time it's just what they eat, not some made up desease.. The moms should be ashamed of themselves.. The kids look depressed and fat, and so are the moms

Listen to the Dr.

I too have a weight problem.  I have diabetes, HBP, hypertension & depression.  I had depression before the weight problem.  Please do what Dr. Phil says.  I traded in the chips for low fat pretzels, fruits and healthy foods.  When sitting at my desk I eat sugar free hard candies.  It keeps my mouth busy.  I have yogurt and hard boiled egg for breakfast, a few cracker and cheese in the mid-morning, lunch is soup and salad (dressing is red wine vinegar and sweet and low) a hugh iced tea and 3 packs of crackers.  When I get home, I have a 20 oz water.  My dh eats a lot of goodies.  And he tempts me; especially with the big bowl of ice cream he enjoys every night.  My inner and outer child wants some.

Dr. Phil I try to walk but my legs aren't strong enough to handle the weight.  I can do about 10 minutes, so I try to do the walking a few times a day.  I am 50.  My parents told me that after my tonsils and adnoids were removed it was all havoc.  LOL, how long can I blame that?

OK, let me go read the board now.
